I am a huge fan of the author and litterally have all of her books. But this book is really spectacular. The photos and recipes go above and beyond my expectations. I am blown away!!!
I would litterally consider this is a must have book for any cake lovers out there. Trust me shortcuts can be just as spectacular if not more so then any full blown recipe, Trust me these are so far changed you would never recognize the original bake mix selected.
Buy this it's totally worth it!!!

I really enjoyed the design of this book that made it easy to follow with photos to strive for and tips and tricks that have helped me as I focus more on cakes and learning to decorate. Cakes are not generally my preference (neither to eat nor to bake) so I decided to jump down the rabbit hole and learn. I tend to cut recipes to the smallest portion as I test out recipes. It's still a difficult concept for me to hold on to - using premade cake mixes - since I'm stubborn and want to perfect the 'from scratch' but it's so much easier and less stressful. The Strawberry Tres Leches cake...blissful sigh...
This was a great cookbook and I really enjoyed reading through the recipes. I definitely found some that I will be making.
Delicious recipes that enhance a basic cake mix and really elevate it to the next level. There are some really impressive recipes and flavours in this book and it's fast going to become a favourite. From a Hummingbird cake, Snickerdoodle cake to a Chocolate Triple-Berry Cake, some vegan or gluten free options, baby cakes, bundts, loafs and pound cakes and even a wedding cake. There's a recipe for everyone and for every occasion in this creative and inspiring cookbook. I've already got the next years family birthday cakes picked out and can't wait to get baking!
A NEW TAKE ON CAKE: 175 BEAUTIFUL, DOABLE CAKE MIX RECIPES FOR BUNDTS, LAYERS, SLABS, LOAVES, COOKIES, AND MORE.
BY: ANNE BYRN
I really just love cookbooks so I was excited to see that I got the opportunity to read and review this latest offering from Anne Byrn. I thought that the beautiful illustrations of these delectable and delicious easy to make recipes makes me want to try several of them. I had not been familiar with this Author, Anne Byrn's other cookbooks but this one is so full of time saving tips on how to create such fancy and mouth watering desserts. I appreciated all of the tips on recommendations that this Author so generously included about the variations of different types of cake pans and how they affected certain results of how her experiences were baking her vast amount of cakes. She says to always invest in good pans. For Example choose metal cake pans versus silicone or glass. Also she encourages buying shiny over dark cake pans. The dark pans can darken the sides of your cake. She includes a checklist of favorite baking tools. I was surprised to learn why I could never find cake mixes with pudding in the middle (my old standby for moist chocolate cakes).
I am definitely buying a print copy of not only this one but many her other cookbooks including her original classic she wrote over twenty years ago called, "The Cake Mix Doctor," which became a bestseller virtually overnight. I am surprised that this is the first I have ever heard of her. Whether you are vegan or gluten free this latest cookbook will inspire you to try regardless of your baking skills. I want to try making her gorgeous looking Gluten Free Vanilla Cake with Cherry Buttercream which looks similar to the most delicious cake that my good friend had served bought from a Bakery in which I had never been able until now to find until now. I am off to bake that cake.

Anne Byrn has published several bestselling cookbooks with recipes using cake mixes. Almost everyone who likes to bake owns at least one of these. She doesn’t seem to quit, however, and her newest cookbook, A New Take on Cake: 175 Beautiful, Doable Cake Mix Recipes for Bundts, Layers, Slabs, Loaves, Cookies, and More! A Baking Book is ready for bakers and non-bakers everywhere to bake some new treats. Just like her previous excellent cookbooks, the recipes start with a cake mix (and often a pudding mix, too), so there isn’t a lot of measuring. The cakes, however, turn out perfectly every time and taste homemade. As far as cakes go, Anne Byrn is a genius.
Most of the recipes have minimal ingredients, making them faster to put together. They are written in standard recipe form and are easy to follow. There is no limit to Byrn’s imagination, and there are cakes of every flavor and variety to choose from. Another plus to this cookbook is that there are beautiful photographs of almost every cake, as well as special ones such as gluten free and vegan for those on special diets.
Included are Bundt cakes, loaf cakes, cupcakes, pound cakes, layer cakes, and even a DIY wedding cake. This cookbook has enough fun recipes that even if you own Byrn’s previous books, you’ll want to own this one as well. It will certainly be one that is used often.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
These are cakes that anyone can make. Use a cake mix and add ingredients to make cakes, donuts, cake pops and snacks. I love the Ice Cream Cone Cake or even a simple yellow cake with chocolate frosting. If you don’t have a lot of time or are new to baking cakes this is the perfect cookbook for you. I love it!
Another delicious beautifully photographed book by Ann Byrn .This book can make anyone look like a master cake maker So many recipes simplified for the everyday baker.Great ideas recipes will be using this cookbook again& again.#netgalley #tenspeedpress
Ilove this book. I love it enough that I have made several of the recipes. I love it enough that I’ve ordered by own physical copy after reading and cooking out of the Netgalley copy.
The people I work with love this book too. I like cooking things but I don’t really like to eat everything that I make. I have to force baked good onto unsuspecting people. They are very happy about this.
This book is basically a guide to fancying up cake mixes. There are so many ideas here though. There are layer cakes and cupcakes and loafs and smaller cakes and gluten free cakes and vegan cakes. There are also general guidelines like how to convert a cake recipe to cupcakes.
All the recipes that I’ve made have been amazingly moist and soft. That made wonderful cupcakes. It was a little harder when I tried a layer cake. Both of the cake layers fell apart when I tried to take them out of the pans. I had to force them into cake shapes and then majorly cover them with whipped cream and oreos. It looked like something made by an overenthusiastic toddler but it tasted amazing. My coworkers fell on it like starving hyenas. One person has already requested that cake for her birthday next May.
I will be keeping this book as a reference and I see myself baking out of it often.
I have been a fan of Anne’s since the first Cake Mix Doctor cookbook was published over 20 years ago. I still have my copy (and of the books that followed) and I still make a few favorite recipes. Anyone who knows me might find this odd, since one of the things I pride myself on is scratch baking. But what Anne has always provided is a way to make baking something delicious accessible to just about anybody.
A New Take on Cake does that and more. Featuring 175+ (I’ll explain in a minute) recipes, some based on classic Cake Mix Doctor recipes, many brand new, and some you might not expect (sugar cookies you can roll out, cheese cake, slab pie) as well as many made with alternative milks, some vegan, and some gluten free. I say more than 175 because many recipes include variations, and if you also vary the fillings and frostings, the number increases exponentially.
But what stands out to me the most as I read through the book (and yes, I read cookbooks) is all the tips, tricks, and techniques that Anne includes. For example, how to divide a cake mix and bake half a recipe for households or occasions when a full size cake isn’t necessary. (I have just asked for 6 inch round cake pans for Christmas). Tips on how to slice layers for filling, no fuss but gorgeous suggestions for decorating and dressing up cakes and cupcakes and more. (Seriously, go to Anne’s feed and watch her roll the sides of a cake in sprinkles. You’ll learn something). Most of all, what Anne’s recipes give you is a blueprint that you can riff on endlessly. My sister and I created our own cake mix recipe after baking from Anne’s book. It is STILL a cake I make today.
I am planning to buy a copy for myself (unless someone gives me one) and giving one to my sister for Christmas.
Happy publication day!
Thanks to NetGalley and Ten Speed Press for a chance to review this cookbook. I was excited to see this come out as I very much enjoyed the authors previous works
This is a book with beautiful enticing photography, sage advice about baking and baking supplies and most of all - delicious recipes .
Along with a friend , I tried a number of the recipes and they were all loved by those who tried them.
Particular favorites - Cashew Thumbprints, Fresh Raspberry Mojito Loaf, Apple skillet Cake , Pumpkin Skillet Crumble and the Chocolate Covered Cherry Cake. I particularly enjoyed the concept of cooking a cake in a cast iron skillet.
The incorporation of a cake mix in the recipes is great to save time amd increase uniformity of results!
I highly recommend this book for all families and bakers. Will definitely add it to my cookbook collection
Who knew from a box cake mix....
A few tweaks, add in some simple ingredients you have on hand and presto. Magic! A beautiful, attainable cake you can make from a box cake mix. I can truly appreciate that one's starting point is a box cake mix (who doesn't have one on hand?) and you can easily achieve a whole fancy cake. From bundt cakes, to baby baked Alaskas, there was a cake you could happily make. I also liked that there were vegan and gluten free options and more importantly, cakes for smaller households. Just a lovely book on cake. From a cake mix.
Recommend.
I have long been a fan of Anne Byrn's Cake Mix Doctor books, and the only thing I found missing in those was photos. This new book has them all! This is a fantastic book for people who want to start with a cake mix but end up with a beautiful cake, special flavors, or an interesting presentation. The recipes in here have a wide variety of flavors, and there are quite a few vegan options.
Chapters are Layer Up; Bundts, Pounds, and Loaves; Skillets and Springform; Snack Cakes and Slabs; Cupcakes, Muffins, and More; Cookies, Bars, and Bites; and Frostings, Fillings, and Glazes. The intro chapter covers mixes, pans, techniques, decorating, tools, and special circumstances.
This book would be good for novice or more experienced bakers.
I'm in two minds about this book.
I knew nothing about the predecessor which is why I went into it without knowing what it would be about. And here's the thing: all recipes (frostings and similar aside) are based on having a cake mix. So unless you have access to those typical American cake mixes, the book is useless to you. Fair enough, you can sometimes find a basic butter cake mix, but it is far from common in all countries.
If however, you have access to these mixes and you have to allergies that may restrict you from using them, then the book is magic. The recipes look scruptious, the pictures are gorgeous and the ideas are extremely varied.
The book is truly beautiful, I love that every recipe seems to have a picture and you can mix & match based on what you have at home. There is everything from classics to modern baking ideas. I was excited to see some Gluten-Free recipes and will try some of the others with Gluten-Free cake mixes.
Another great book for recipe book collectors! Mostly easy, all fun, creative takes on mix cakes. Wonderful photos - almost gives you the satisfaction of "Having" without "eating" - almost!!
The cake recipes were easy enough to follow - once you got into more complicated recipes I could imagine some households not having the equipment to execute it. Overall a good cake cookbook
Not super creative in the cake mix department, considering there are so many different cake mixes out there is would be nice to see things done with a carrot or angle food mix but overall the recipes work and the photos are inspiring.
Wonderful cookbook no matter your level of baking confidence. I’ve been baking since I was very young and I still learned so much from this book. (Like how to get serious sprinkles on the sides of a confetti cake)
I love that she starts the recipes with a cake mix. Sometimes I want to make my kids a cake but I don’t want to break out my scale and all that a from scratch cake can take. The author shows you how to make a boxed cake taste like it’s from the bakery.
The recipes are easy to follow with easy to get ingredients. Also there’s pictures with every recipe (some are in the front). Lots of recipes (including vegan and gluten-free) and tons of tips.
I loved this cookbook!! Cake made with store bought batter! Want to spiff up some Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker cake mix. Look no further!
What did I like? Who wouldn’t love this. I love this idea. Shorten recipes to cake mix plus certain items. Great pictures! I bookmarked so many recipes! Pineapple cake! Cake pops! Delicious white cake! So many options!!
Would I recommend or buy? Skip measuring flour and just add what’s needed to make a great cake! I love the idea! Shortcuts with a twist! I’d love a copy and recommend to cake lovers! Five stars for such a great book!
I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review!
