This art was lively and the brown rep for a hiking and outdoorsy story is so important!
Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for an Arc in exchange for an honest review.
I think we can all remember a time when we wanted to do something with a parent, but they wanted to do something else. In Climb On! a young girl reminds her father about the hike they had planned, a hike to the tippy top. Giving up the plan to watch futbol, they head out. Excited by all the things they see, hear and do along the way, they enjoy their climb. When she gets tired, her dad carries her until they reach The Summit. A wonderful shared experience between a father and child. The text is short but sweet, with a sprinkling of Creole words throughout. The illustrations by Jacqueline Alcántara add much to the story. They are large, vibrant and fun showing so much expression and emotion. The last page shows several of the creatures they saw along the way, asking if the reader saw them. Of course, this prompts a second look for readers to make sure they found them all. A wonderful story to encourage parents and children to go outside and have an adventure.
I’ve read other books by Baptiste Paul so i was excited for this book. The artwork was beautiful as per usual. The book was enjoyable but i did feel it was missing something. Being shown a little glimpse into words in creole are always nice though. Even though i have no clue if I’m saying them right. It’s fun to try.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
Climb on! is a brightly illustrated picture book about a child and their father who go off on a mountain hike to the top of the mountain for some parent child bonding time. I loved the vibrance of the colours used in this book and the excitement of the child was indeed catching. Children will love going back through the book to find all the creatures pictured at the back for them to find too. This is a great book to encourage parents to spend more time going on little (or big) adventures and spending quality time bonding with their little ones.
There's not much of a story line to this book but the illustrations make it well worth the read!

Thank you to the North South Books and NetGalley for the advanced electronic copy of this delightful book. The vivid colors, gorgeous illustrations, and a sprinkle of Creole words create a sense of wonder the characters experience on the trail, as well as showcase the precious relationship between the parent and the child. A list of the rainforest creatures at the end of the book invites a second, closer look at the pictures as the reader searches for the creatures through the book. Can’t wait to share this gem with my students.
The excitment in this book is contagious umeed, and I can't wait to go for a trek now! We have a simple story about a young girl who is impatient to see the view from the mountain summit. Her enthusiasm will be relatable for kids and parents. The best part of this book as with most children's books, was the illustrations. The drawings were subtle, colored with vivid, bright hues of blue and green. It made me wish I had such an adventure in my childhood, but I intend to make it up. This is the perfect gift for your children and kid cousins.
The story of a boy who spent a day with his dad hiking. I learned some creole words, and the scenery is not my usual view. It's an easy read with great illustration. Also reminded that what we are not in the mood to do, might lead to fun adventure ahead.
A lively, brightly colored picture book that follows a young girl and her dad as she pulls him away from his football (soccer) game to have him accompany her as they climb to the top of their Caribbean island. Local vernacular.
All I can say about this book is YES YES YES YES! Every year, I search for books about being outside, hiking, and exploring the woods that feature children of color. My students are rarely represented in these books, with many more of the books focusing on animals or white children. This book is absolutely luscious, ripe with verdant greens and brilliant tropical colors. It also tells a fun story of a child on an adventure with simple text that will draw in toddlers, preschoolers, and even kindergarteners. I love how the text mirrors the story, climbing up, veering sideways, yet stays super readable. And the end of the story features a "Did you find these animals?" that will send kids back to explore this book all over again. This is sure to become a favorite, and I cannot wait to purchase it for my class.
Child wants to go outside and climb the terrain until reaching the summit with dad. Together they live in a tropical land where Creole is spoken and interpreted. There are many fantastically colored birds and more (and a seek/find paragraph at the end)! Together they huff and puff and climb ever upward until they reach the summit that overlooks a colorful town. Where can we go with our energetic ones and what can WE see? Great book for home/school/public library!
I requested and received a free temporary ebook copy from NorthSouth Books Via NetGalley. Thank you!
Climb On! is a bright and boldly illustrated picture book about a girl and her father going for a hike in the nearby rainforest and all the plants, insects, and other natural wonders they see along the way. The pictures were so beautiful and evocative, this could've easily been a wordless picture book.
A gorgeously illustrated children's book about getting outside to go on a hike. I loved the vibrant and tropical illustrations.
What a beautiful adventure book! A father and daughter hike to a local summit enjoying all sorts of sights and experiences along the way. The text is smattered with Creole words and the tale is told in very expressive language that will be great for vocabulary-building.
The illustrations are just stunning! They're bright, bold, and full of life. There is a seek-and-find activity to encourage readers to notice the small details in the pictures. This would be a great circle time or small group read and would make a great addition to pre-K and elementary school and classroom libraries.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an eARC of this title in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this book. I really liked the art style and the main character’s curiosity and appreciation for all of the life surrounding her. She has a beautiful, adventurous spirit that longs to be in nature.
I think the words are too small on the page, which makes them a struggle to read. I also wish there was more of an explanation about the Creole words that are used many times throughout the story. Having more context and information about the foreign language would help to provide an educational experience for the parent, child, and reader whose native language isn’t Creole.
With bright illustrations filled with beautiful plants and animals, perfect cadence, and a sprinkling of Creole words, this is a perfect book to introduce children to a world they may not have seen, and remind them how much beauty can be found in the natural world!
This book has beautiful pictures and a lovely message. It was at times hard to follow, but I think that could be remedied by setting the narration and dialogue in different fonts or sizes. It seems that sometimes an omniscient narrator is talking and sometimes the father or child, but it isn’t clear. I love the language inclusion, but we are never told which language, nor where the book is set, which negates the teaching value to kids who are not already familiar with it. We are a white family and I love reading books from around the worth with my kids, particularly with POC characters and different languages. I just want to be able to tell them that “this family lives in St. Lucia and they spreak Creole, let’s look at the globe to see where that is.” (I don’t know if that’s the setting, it’s a guess because of “piton”.)
Overall it’s a lovely book and my children would adore it!
Dear Readers, Aliens and Creatures, this one is still available on Netgalley, please check it out! It’s a gorgeous book, an engaging read and a lovely story about father and child.

A little child convinces their dad that today is the perfect day to go exploring this beautifully illustrated book.
The little child and her dad (will say it’s a girl, but it could easily be a boy), decide to head out to the tippy top of the mountain instead of watching football. On their way there are many mini-adventures and much to see.
Playful animals are all around and so are insects, after all, this is a tropical adventure. The duo climb rocks, take paths, see waterfalls, swing on vines, admire plants, relax and eat.
The book is peppered with French creole and leaves you with a warm-hearted feeling after reading it. I was/am enchanted!
Please read it to all the little ones you know.
I love the illustration they were beautiful, you could see that the girl is a very active girl. I struggled with the story. It was very jumpy and lacked a plot. there were times I was not sure who was speaking. There looked like some native words from where ever they lived. It would have been nice to know where they was.
A vibrant book in visual and story of a dad and this daughter climbing to a submit. Peppered with Creole words, this book will hopefully get children and their parents excited about exploring the great outdoors.
The art in this one is gorgeous. It's bright and colorful and reminds me of my own trip to St. Lucia when I was doing my own mountain hike. I think kids will really connect to the vibrant art style. I love how hair and skin tones are depicted. As far as the dialogue the creole was a nice touch. However the story felt very random and there was just not climax to keep someone like my niece running back for this one. There was no real goal to the hike and then it felt like it ended abruptly. I can't justify paying almost $20 for a book that doesn't have much of a storyline. This book would've been perfect it had more of an adventure.
I received an arc from North South Books in exchange for an honest review.
