Enjoyed this one very much, another great suspense thriller from author Andrew Mayne. Never disappoints, highly recommend!
I've been intrigued by this author ever since reading The Naturalist. He has great books which I would love to see made into movies some day. Does not disappoint!
Many thanks to the publisher for my copy. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely LOVE this series from Andrew Mayne, which is truly just a fantastically unique twist on a standard police procedural with entirely loveable characters, intriguing mystery and great suspense sequences. I flew through this installment as I was getting prepared to read the new one in the series coming this month, and remembered once again why I enjoy it so much.
Andrew so evidently understands scuba diving and the underwater elements are so atmospheric and exciting. I love that it creates that very specific Florida-coastline vibe and never gets boring for dramatics of the setting, whether its ocean or swamp alike.
Honestly this is such a perfect series for readers who love mystery, suspense, police procedurals and a really entertaining series. I hope this series goes on for a long long time.
These books seriously keep getting better! This one was definitely a nail-biter, and I loved the cameo we got from Theo & Jessica. If I didn't know more books were coming after this, I would have thought the UIU was kaput!
🌊 BOOK / REVIEW 🌊
As much as I wanted to love #seastorm by Andrew Mayne, this just wasn't the book for me. I absolutely loved the first two books in this series and was in the mood for a good thriller that took place under water, but this fell a bit flat for me.
The novel started out really strong, and I was hooked, but when the investigation actually started, I got bored 😩. Having found myself on the "ultimate world cruise" side of #tiktok, I loved that this mystery took place on a cruise ship. I wish we had some perspective in the beginning chapters from those on board before the explosions - I think that may have made it more relatable.
I will give credit where credit is due though and here are a few things that I did enjoy about the book:
✔️ Strong female main character
✔️ Fast paced and a short read (301 pgs)
✔️ INSANE research went into writing this book - the author spends a lot of time describing exactly how underwater investigations are run and its FASCINATING
✔️ I really enjoy learning about these types of investigators - I am really amazed at how much (and how little) you can learn about the cause of death after someone is found under water
I will give this one ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 - I suggest reading #thegirlbeneaththesea and #blackcoral over this one, though. I enjoyed the setting and crimes better than this book.
I've enjoyed all of the IUI books from Andrew Mayne. I love Sloan's character, I love the scuba diving aspect (I'm a diver myself), and just overall love the stories from these books.
I can't wait to read the next two (and hopefully more in the future?).
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead.
I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings.
Anything requested and approved will be read and a decent quality review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
If you liked The Girl Beneath the Sea, you’ll enjoy this follow-up by Andrew Mayne where police diver Sloan McPherson takes on a new case.
What you learn about diving and all things nautical from this series remains superior to the actual mysteries each book is plotted around, but the story itself is decent enough here that is doesn’t detract. Sloan is a pretty typical protagonist for a procedural, but she’s likable and her specific job makes for more interesting content than a typical detective thriller.
I’ve enjoyed the setting for this series too which, like all the interesting educational content about diving, helps smooth over a fairly predictable (though competently plotted) mystery.
I absolutely love this series! Sloan, Hughes, and Solar are the perfect team, and the adventures of the UIU make for great reads. The pacing of this book, the suspense, the conflict, the dialogue, the action, the other characters… everything combines to create a quick and intriguing story. I only have two very small negatives- there wasn’t quite as much underwater as I’d like, and the ending felt very rushed after the eventful and thorough beginning and middle. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book and will grab Book 4 asap.
Sea Storm is the third book in the Underwater Investigation Unit mystery series. In this installment, the Underwater Investigation Unit is called in when a cruise ship starts sinking after a mysterious explosion.
With an “underwater” unit, there are plenty of water related crimes to keep the team busy. The characters are likable, and this book furthers the development of these memorable characters. While Sea Storm can be read as a standalone novel, I recommend starting with the first book in the series.
Sea Storm is an exciting and intriguing mystery. Recommended for readers who enjoy a good police procedural with a twist.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
There's never a dull moment or chapter in any of the books I've read from this author and I've only gotten started. Sea Storm is a great book and follows Sloan through yet another exhilarating adventure. The plot & characters were both fantastic. The plot follows the Underwater Investigation Units investigation in what seems like a bio-terrorism attack. I thought I had it figured out but I was so wrong! There are twists both small and big and every one of rhem made me stop to catch my breath. At this point I'm highly invested in Sloan's story and cant wait for the next book in this series!
Thank you NetGalley, Thomas and Mercer & Andrew Mayne for an arc!
Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit have been called out to help investigate the sinking of a cruise ship off the coast of Florida due to an unknown explosion. With other ships under threat from a suspect ecoterrorist, Sloan and the UIU are racing against time to prevent another sinking but what Sloan and the UIU stumble upon is a bigger conspiracy with powerful enemies pulling the strings.
Sloan and the UIU, their careers, and their lives are under threat and unless they can expose their powerful enemies, their lives may never be the same. Andrew Mayne always writes smart, edge of your seat thrillers starring clever and capable protagonists and Sea Storm is no different. Sloan is a tough and competent heroine whose skill, nerve, and drive for truth and justice make her easy to root for. The UIU series has been entertaining and I always highly anticipate the next chapters in the series.
I highly recommend any of Mayne's work and especially this series for anyone who enjoys a good mystery/police procedural.
Sea Storm by Andrew Mayne
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publishers for an ARC copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Fun, Exciting, Great ride!!!
Once again this is a first time author for me. At it's core Sea Storm is a bad guys against good guys/cops, detective/FBI story. But that's where it ends... Andrew Mayne has created a very cool and different angle to come at the bad guys with. An Underwater Investigative Unit. The underwater diving is just such a cool alternative to the stuffy office buildings of regular detectives and the FBI. I have no idea if such a unit exists but if it doesn't I would imagine the closest thing to it would be an investigative department of the Coast Guard and I don't know if that exists either.
In about the last 5 years or so there have been several authors that have created series in this general genre that have had female leads as their protagonist. And I don't mean 2nd lead to a male partner. This has also added another angle to these stories that I have found as a refreshing change. I read now and previously the Mitch Rapps, Jack Ryans, Scott Harvath's, and Amos Decker series and have loved all those novels and still look forward to more novels starring those characters but having a female lead just changes things enough so that the novels seem new and different. Also, I have to say that I find Sloan McPherson one bad-ass female character. I don't know much about her relationship with Run because I haven't read the previous novels yet, but Jackie, being only 13 seems like a bad-ass in the making. ...Just finished the ending and while I'm sure it's probably realistic it is not how I would have liked to see it end. I would give this book 4 1/2 stars and I am looking very forward to going back and reading the first two novels in this series as well as trying out other books by this author. Definitely recommend!!
This is the third book featuring Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit (UIU).
This was a great adventure, starting off with the sinking of a cruise ship that needs to be investigated. I quite enjoy the series as well as the Jessica Blackwood series, and this didn't disappoint. There is a lovely crossover and hopefully there will be another Blackwood book in the future!

A page turner filled with suspense and action.
Many thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
Andrew Mayne cannot write this series fast enough.
I read the first in the UIU series as my very first Kindle Unlimited book and I've been hooked ever since. Unfortunately, I have to wait until each one published.
Sea Storm has just as much excited and intrigue as its predecessors. A luxurious cruise ship is attacked and begins to sink just off the coast of Florida. Sloan and Hughes jump in to assist the Coast Guard in evacuating the passengers and investigating the attack.
Sloan of course gets into trouble with her compulsive decisions, but her knowledge and gut feelings are nothing to ignore.
My two favorite things about all these books are the underwater scenes that leave me literally on the edge of my seat and the political struggle within Florida.
There is never any boring or slow parts in Mayne's series and I cannot wait to devour the next installment.
The third book in the series and the one I’ve been waiting the longest for to come. Read it as a stand alone or read the prior books first - this is a great book.
This book was so good! I want to see more from this author in the future!! I couldn't put this book down. What a page turner!!!
The 3rd in the series, this can be read as a standalone but may be better with prior knowledge of the characters. This was my least favorite of the 3 so far. There was a repeat tactic that seemed unlikely in addition to other far-fetched things. The small inclusion of characters from another series was unnecessary (and having only read 1 in that series which caused me to dislike one of the 2 characters, this didn't work for me.) To top it off, I still don't understand the motive for the initial action that required investigation. Please enlighten me if I missed something in my reading!
This is my new favorite series! While I enjoyed Andrew Mayne’s Theo Cray series, Sloane MacPherson is a fresh take on a female protagonist. As an underwater investigator, Sloane and her team are looking at an explosion on a cruise ship and searching for answers.
The pacing of the story is great and there’s a nice balance of action and dialogue.
Highly recommend!
