Not as good as the first two UIU books, but still thoroughly enjoyable. I will 100% read whatever Andrew Mayne writes and probably never be disappointed. Thank you very much for the advanced copy.
I love this series, the characters are all unique and quirky and really add to the story.
Sloan is a great kick ass character, and it was great to see her daughter following in her footsteps.
As much as I loved this book , I would have liked more underwater action in this book.
I'm looking forward to the next instalment in this series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
“We could use the help, but if you make things worse, we’re blaming you.” Sea Storm by Andrew Mayne
3.5 stars. Maybe 4. Felt the ending was a bit rushed but I enjoyed watching UIU crew catch their man. McPherson, Hughes and Solar are back to investigate a cruise ship that was sunk off near the beach of Fort Lauderdale. Turns out it wasn’t as simple as they thought.
This series is just good. This 3rd book is just as fun to read as the first 2. I haven’t finished a book in a short period of time in ages till this one.
Thanks Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for this arc. Really am enjoying the series and looking forward to their next case.
1) If you are going to smuggle a bunch of doodads that look like R2D2, then put them in a box labeled R2D2 and call FedEx. 2) if you are going to smuggle something on a ship, put them in the cargo hold where you don't have to use a welding torch to get to them, 3) If you are going to smuggle something on a ship and have it welded into a bulkhead, then have a plan to retrieve it that does not involve blowing up the ship. 4) If you are an author writing a story about producing and transporting something illegal but almost undetectable and you explain exactly how to smuggle the almost undetectable product, provide a plausible reason for smuggling the doodad that makes the product rather than the product itself.
I am enjoying Andrew Mayne's Underwater Investigation Unit Series. The Sea Storm is the third in the series. It holds action, intrigue, and suspense. The characters are crafted well - they are human and a bit quirky. The Underwater Investigation Unit is a small police/coast guard investigation unit that investigates crimes committed in the waters along the Florida coastline all the way down to the Keys. Makes for a great beach read. It is a quick, entertaining read. I can't wait for the next one.
Makes me wonder if I ever want to go on a cruise ship
Sloan McPherson and the other members of the Underwater Investigation Unit are called in to aid rescue efforts after a cruise ship with 4,000+ people is bombed off the shores of Ft. Lauderdale and is slowly sinking.
They then help with investigating the terrible crime, running into a powerful foe with unscrupulous reasons behind the bombing.
This was the third book in this series that I read and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I recommend it if you like fast-paced action thrillers.
I received this book from Thomas & Mercer through Net Galley in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review.
I've been looking forward to this book for awhile. I love Sloan McPherson. She's strong, intuitive, and not afraid to take risks. She doesn't let anyone run over her which is not a pun in her man, Run. Her daughter is becoming her own strong female even at 13. I I've the interactions with her team, her boss, her family, and especially when she us to deal with "the bad guys/gals".
There's a really special treat, Easter Egg type thing in the book. I'm not going to spoil it. It's as a great surprise.
Again, I really loved this book.
Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit are called to a cruise ship off the coast of Fort Lauderdale that’s sinking from a mysterious explosion. When it appears to be the work of an ecoterrorist and other ships are threatened, it becomes a race against time to crack the case.
From chapter one this book dives right in and doesn’t come up for air until the end. The story is engaging and the mystery fast paced.
Andrew Mayne has turned into a must read for me. I love his writing and the complexity to his stories. He writes strong, independent characters that keep you engaged and wanting more. This book is well worth the read as well as his others. I would definitely recommend!
I want to thank NetGalley, Andrew Mayne and Thomas & Mercer for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
Exciting action in the third installment of this adventure thriller series.
The Florida Underwater Investigative Unit is called to the scene when a cruise ship is rocked by a series of well-placed explosions and begins to list and sink close to the harbor. As the rescue team looks for any remaining crew or passengers while the lifeboats head to shore, they discover that the damage is intentional and points to perhaps being caused by some sort of ecoterrorist. An intense investigation involves the team working in conjunction with various governmental agencies, but clues and leads begin to hint that there is much more at play here than an attempt to protest environmental issues. The small unit, consisting of Sloan McPherson, Scott Hughes, and boss George Solar, are convinced that they are facing off with a well-connected and powerful enemy involved in a huge conspiracy.
This was so much fun to read with a fast pace and tons of action involving incredible feats of bravery, endurance, and skills as the team races on land and sea to solve the case. I enjoy the partnership between McPherson and Hughes who seem to manage in all types of dangerous situations. They have some incredible abilities and good instincts as they face all sorts of bad guys. I also like how the author shows glimpses into their private lives with McPherson's family -- who are definitely unusual. I've read only one other in this series, but I admit I can't wait for #4. If you are looking for something different in the crime fiction genre, this series fits the bill.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for this e-book ARC to read, review, and recommend.
Andrew Mayne is one of the most intelligent authors that I read on a recurring basis and one my favorite authors at that. He has three ongoing series, Dr. Theo Crane. Jessica Blackwood and the Underwater Investigation series and, there is a cross-over book with Crane and Blackwood that is amazing. Sea Storm is part of the Underwater Investigation series and, naturally, revolves around crimes underwater, specifically in and around the Keys in Florida.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in this series but I'm now finding my interests waning. I'm much less enamored with the state of Florida in general, I've never been a big fan of the Florida coast so it's a stretch to make myself enjoy book after book where this is the setting. You will note that this is a personal preference that would affect only me and others with similar feelings toward the state of Florida right now. So, as much as I love Mayne's writing, I'm going to have to pass on this series and concentrate on his others which I find far more intriguing.
This is book 3 from Underwater Investigation series. Andrew will keep engaged throughout the book. It’s a fast paced crime thriller and easy to read. I’m looking forward to the last book of this series. We all love a badass female character.
3.5 rounded up. I love the characters of Agents McPherson, Hughes, and Solar. And most of the book was keep me on the edge of my seat, I need feel like he ending hit implausible and it felt rushed.
I was given a copy from Netgalley in exchange for an unbiased review.
Oh my gosh, Andrew Mayne really knows how to come up with intricate stories with a lot of moving parts. I love his storytelling and the wittiness of the characters. Sloan is so badass. I also LOVED that Theo Cray and Jessica Blackwood made an appearance. I had a feeling that Mayne was working toward incorporating all of his separate series into one and I'm HERE. FOR. IT. Each of his characters is so likeable in a completely different way. I will never get tired of his stories because they are all so different and imaginative. I cannot wait for the next of his books to be released!
I absolutely adore this series! Sloan is such a bada$$ lead female character. I read the first in the series when it was on Amazon First Reads and it absolutely hooked me on this series. (And then I also went back and bought all of this author's other titles too.)
This book is fast paced and you won't want to put it down. 5 stars for another fantastic read!
Sloan McPherson, a Florida police diver with the 3-person Underwater Investigative Unit, and her team are one of many agencies who receive a distress call to help in a rescue operation following a mysterious series of explosions aboard a 4,000-passenger cruise ship off the coast of Fort Lauderdale. Following the rescue operation, the FBI begins its investigation into what caused the explosions and who might be responsible, but with a tropical storm headed their way and pressure for the FBI to close this case quickly, McPherson fears corners will be cut. These concerns cause McPherson and her partner, Scott Hughes, cop and ex-Navy Seal, to begin to investigate matters themselves, and in doing so, they raise more questions, discover bodies along the way, and place targets on themselves and those they care about.
There is much more investigation and drama happening on land than underwater here, but it’s another suspenseful installation with twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing about its conclusion, and I look forward to the next in the series. 3.5 stars
NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer kindly provided me an ARC of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Sea Storm is the third Underwater Investigation Unit (UIU) novel. I personally think it is the best so far. It is a fast paced, high octane thriller. It works well as a stand alone, but I recommend reading the previous two to get a feel for character development and relationships.
The UIU is called to assist when a cruise ship puts out an SOS. The ship is sinking and passengers and crew need to be rescued. No sooner do Sloan McPherson and her partner, Scott Hughes, reach the ship than explosions occur. Andrew Mayne does a great job describing how Sloan and Scott do their jobs.
The investigation of the crime is taken over by the FBI, and the UIU is left out of the loop, but that doesn't stop Sloan from investigating. She and Scott search the ship for clues and find a section of the ship has been cut out. Was it a possible storage area for illegal items? A tropical storm is headed their way and Sloan, her daughter, Jackie, and Jackie's dad, Run, search for evidence before it gets washed away. What they find raises more questions.
Sloan is a strong protagonist, she can be stubborn and reckless. Her boss, George Solar, tries to keep her from taking too many risks. Sloan's family is available to lend help when needed. We are treated by an appearance of Mayne's characters from his other novels, Jessica Blackwood and Theo Cray.
The author keeps his readers engaged, some twists and turns. Overall, the novel is a fun, fast read. I look forward to the next UIU adventure.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC. The review is my own.
Andrew Mayne is a fabulous story teller of the Underwater Investigative Unit. I am a sucker for great police stories, and this series is absolutely one of these. Sea Storm is the third book in the UIU series, and while it may be helpful to have read the past books in the series, I don’t think it is necessarily required. This book follows Sloan McPherson and her small unit of underwater investigators while trying to solve the mystery of a small cruise ship that someone has attempted to blow up. I was so enthralled with the story and kept picturing it like a movie or tv series in my head. Such a fun and entertaining read!
I am so looking forward to book 4!
Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to read this in exchange for my honest opinion.
I've read other books (like the Theo Cray series) by Andrew Mayne. But I hadn't gotten around to his Underwater Investigation Unit series yet. This is the third book in the series, and I'm getting the first two books immediately!
Sea Storm started with a literal boom, and never slowed down from there. The action was unrelenting, but not to the point where the reader starts to get 'tired' and question it all.
Once again, Mayne gives us characters who are well developed. He's as good at writing women as he is at men, which is good, given that the main character here is a married with kids woman. Albeit one who kicks some major underwater butt. She comes off as very real though, not as some adrenalin based macho fantasy. I think one of the things I liked most was her devil may care attitude, as well as her acceptance and admittance that sometimes she messes up. She's very human. The only criticism I have is that some (not all just some) of the secondary characters come off a bit two dimensional, but it's okay in this case, or passable, as they aren't there very long. It would be harder to flesh them out further unless given more time on the page. The action is believable, and I found the premise behind the plot to be well explained and interesting. Something not often handled in mysteries, and I won't say more so as not to spoil it. This is another case in a mystery plot, where what you think you see, may not be exactly what you're getting. The mystery is fairly easy to figure out once certain facts are known, but Sea Storm comes across to me as more of an action thriller with mystery thrown in for good measure. It was quite a fun read, and I enjoyed myself immensely. I couldn't put it down and finished it in one day and late night of solid reading.
I'd recommend this book as a near perfect beach or travel read for anyone who doesn't like all the typical "chick lit" on the market or wants something thrilling and action packed. I don't think men would be turned off by this female main character, and shouldn't let it stand in the way of their new thriller read. Mayne is expert at keeping the pace and tension going. The book is also great for anyone who likes mysteries, books featuring dive teams, government agency work (like FBI for example), or international intrigue.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers Thomas & Mercer for this DRM in exchange for my honest review of Sea Storm by Andrew Mayne..
I adore this series. I picked up the second book in the series without thinking much about it and ending up loving the characters and the way that Mayne writes his stories. I went back and read the first one before starting on the third, which I read back in October because I had to read it right when I got access to it! This book works as a stand alone, as do the other books, but you will have a lot more context if you start with the first one. These are especially engaging thrillers that offer a different setting than a typical thriller by putting a fair amount of the story and plot points under water. I don't know a lot about diving but Mayne clearly did enough research because the scenes all fit and I never question the believability. If you love thrillers with great characters then definitely check out this series!!
Andrew Mayne certainly knows how to write a compelling thriller, and I really enjoy this Underwater Investigation Unit series. The underwater scenes are so vivid that I felt as though I were swimming alongside Sloan as she dodged pursuers and raced to bring a James Bond-like villain to justice.
Sloan McPherson is definitely the star of this show. The McPherson clan is filled with scallywags and pirates which means that sometimes all she has to do is ask a relative to get information on a lead she's developing. She has phenomenal instincts and an amazing knack for putting clues together which the other members of her team are learning to rely on more and more. The dashes of humor throughout Sea Storm are usually at her expense but in the spirit of camaraderie which readers will have a greater appreciation of if they've read the other two books in the series. I have read those other two books (The Girl Beneath the Sea and Black Coral), and one of the things I like the most is Sloan's character development. Sloan is growing up as the series progresses. She's learning to control her impulsiveness as well as to rely on her own opinions rather than looking for validation from men.
A main character with a distinctive (and addictive) voice, thrilling underwater scenes, and a compelling mystery all mean that, once again, I'm looking forward to Sloan McPherson's next adventure. Bring it on!
