Friends at Night is the second book in the Pinwheel series. Pinwheel is a donkey who lives in the forest and enjoys his friends. This is a Star Reader, Level 3 for independent young readers. There are two stories in this book, one about Pinwheel discovering what happens to leaves in the fall, and the second dealing with spending time with friends being better than being alone in your house, even if you are dreaming. My grandson was able to read this book to his younger siblings and their interest was high in the beginning, but they lost interest by the middle of the second story. There are lessons in both stories that are easy to grasp. The illustrations were well done, large and colourful but not outstanding. Overall, a nice book for those emergent readers to read alone or to someone. I would suggest one story at a time, and I think it would make a good bedtime story.
The book contains two tales that are for the independent readers (level 3). They are easy to read, short enough for kids, and very interesting. One is about the fall season and the other about Pinwheel's dream. Moreover, the stories have deep meaning so kids will learn while reading the book.
Beginning readers who are ready for more of a challenge will enjoy these short but more complex vignettes. Level 3 Beginning readers are very popular with young readers who need a bridge to chapter books, and the chapter length and sentences in "Friends at Night" fit the bill for a just-right read. The stories themselves were simple, as they should be for this type of book. However, the illustrations were rather dull and the characters weren't very memorable.
I think for the purpose of being a conduit to advanced reading, this book does just fine, but would like to see more colors and vibrant illustrations.
Very cute children's chapter book! Lots of descriptive dialogue in here which I liked, paired with sweet illustrations.
What a fun story for young readers who are just learning to read and are ready to feel like they can understand a chapter book. The illustrations are enjoyable, but do not give away too much of the story like other lower level books can. Nocely written! I will be getting this for my classroom library.
An adorable little donkey named Pinwheel is in panic mode. He thinks that he has broken Owl's tree. Why do the leaves keep falling down all over the ground and oh my!!! why is there no end to their decent? Squirrel and he, try as they might, cannot stop the ever ending flow. Maybe wise Owl can help solve the problem and tell them why this happening thus releasing the feeling of guilt that poor Pinwheel is feeling. Will the two friends ever find the answer that they are seeking? Did Pinwheel really "rake" havoc with Owl's tree?
The second story in the book once again stars Pinwheel. He wants to sleep in later so he can conjure up the most wonderful dream ever. By choosing more slumber he knows he will be forfeiting playtime with his friends so he can indulge in his own fantasy. His desire for that dream trumps playing.
His daytime nap extends into the afternoon and luckily culminates in dreaming the most fantastic dream ever. Fortunately Pinwheel is still able to join his friends for a robust game of hide-and-seek which makes the day glorious!
This is a new Level 3 Star Readers edition of "Friends at Night." It is designed to have age-appropriate vocabulary and an interesting plot for that targeted age group. The illustrations are wonderful, engaging and enrich the text greatly. I highly recommend this book.
A beautifully illustrated easily accessible book for young readers. The main character Pinwheel is adorable as are his friends. The stories are written in short sentences with a good amount of repetition of words. Children will engage easilynwith these and feel that they are reading 'proper' books. As an educationalist and reading advocate I can highly recommend this and look forward to reading more more.
With many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me early access.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Star Bright Books for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a childrens book. Another Pinwheel adventure (he's a donkey). I am not an educator, but it seemed the word choices were more complicated then a 3. The new learning reader can stop at one story (this holds 2 stories). The stories are cute. 3.5
