Designing learning experiences is no small feat. Whether you’re creating in-person workshops, digital learning modules, or a blended approach, getting it right can feel like a balancing act. That’s where Donald Clark’s *Learning Experience Design: How to Create Effective Learning that Works* comes in. Packed with practical insights and actionable tips, this book is a must-read for anyone in the world of learning and development (L&D).

The book dives deep into Learning Experience Design (LXD)—a term that’s more than just a buzzword. Clark breaks down the essentials of creating effective, engaging, and lasting learning experiences, covering topics like attention, memory, emotion, and how they intersect with tools like graphics, AR/VR, and simulations. There’s even a deep dive into tech-heavy concepts like learning analytics, LMSs, and LXPs, making it clear that this is a guide for the modern L&D professional.

If you’re coming to this book expecting a heavy focus on UX design, you might feel a bit let down. While UX is mentioned, the emphasis is much more on instructional and learning design. That’s not a bad thing, but it’s worth knowing what you’re getting into. Also, some sections dive deep into tech-heavy topics like LMSs and LXPs. While these are undeniably important for L&D professionals, they might feel overwhelming if you’re new to the field.

Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

I requested this book in the mistaken assumption that it might incorporate technology relating to education. Unfortunately not. However I read most of it and will give my thoughts on it.
This is a very well written book which will appeal to those with basic knowledge of programming and all things technological. Clark writes with confidence, good research and a thorough knowledge of his subject. My thanks to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book.
