There was so much to enjoy in this book, I loved the characters especially Mabel and Bert, the pair that holds everything and everyone together.. I could picture the walled garden where the play took place, and the hens clucking away - a magical setting for a beautifully written Christmas book.
When a small theatre company have to find somewhere to hold their production of A Winter's Tale at very short notice, one of the cast suggests Mill Grange. We grow to know all the characters in the house and how the theatre company fits in.
This is the latest book in the series. I hadnt read the other and felt like I should have. It was, at times, a little difficult to follow - but quite enjoyable just the same.
My first visit to Mill Grange will not be my last.
Jenny Kane has created such a lush world in her novel, her writing makes me marvel at the beauty of the countryside, and it is such an engaging series. At first, I felt overwhelmed with the number of characters I was introduced to, but each of them is so distinct and have their own quirks that I couldn't get enough of them! The lives of Tina, Sam, Thea, Shaun, Helen, Tom, Mabel, and Bert are so entertaining, I will be thinking about them for a long time.
Winter Fires at Mill Grange isn't set around Christmas as such, but it's the perfect winter story! It's a feel-good novel with loads to take away from. I would recommend it to anyone who loves to read stories set in a close-knit small town! Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy, I thoroughly enjoyed this!
Winter Fires at Mill Grange is a wonderful read! A lot of characters to keep up with and although I didn't read the other books in the series, this was a great read on its own. I am anxious to go back and read the rest. Thank you for the read!
Another cozy winter romance.
I don't know the author and I haven't read previous parts, so it was really hard to focus on characters, that reunited in the cottage.
It was quit a long read, so it wasn't easy read either- if I knew previous stories, I might enjoyed it more.
Overall, I liked writter's style.
my first visit to mill grange certainly won't be the last, I found myself a bit overwhelmed at the start with the amount of characters I had to get to know and got a bit confused however once I had read the first couple of chapters I figured out who was who.
Loved how descriptive the book was about mill grange and wished I was there, the characters were brilliant and the storyline was good.
Will definitely be visiting mill grange again for a catch up now I know everyone
A wonderful feel good book for the Christmas season, A welcome return to friends that you will have meet in the previous books. These books are filled with hope, love, happiness and a longing for more. It’s so very sad to read the last book, I’m sure another instalment could be written please.
I’d love to go and stay a while at Mill Grange. Set on Exmoor, the beauty of the surrounding countryside comes across on every page, and being back with Tina, Sam, Thea and Helen again was wonderful. The whole series is so engaging and Jenny Kane has written such brilliant characters - Mabel and Bert are certainly favourites of mine. Being back at Mill Grange in Winter was captivating and magical.
Lovely book although I got a bit confused as I hadn't read any of the other Mill Grange books. Harriet is hoping to act in her first starring role so she can get her first Equity role towards her card. When the cast had to find another venue when the original was flooded.
A lovely warming book to read on the run up to Christmas. It gives you a lovely tingly feeling! Lots of community spirit, warm homemade scones and topped off with mulled wine. What more could you want!
I was really expecting more of a holiday story. I also didn’t realize it’s part of a series. I did think it was a good story and it kept my interest.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy
This was such a brilliant read. I couldn't put it down. I loved all the characters and it certainly was addictive. Brilliantly written and heartwarming. Loved it.
Mill Grange, the house where miracles happen!
The Mill Grange stories are so good & this is no different. The lives of Tina & Sam, Thea & Shaun, Helen & Tom, Mabel & Bert all working & friends of Mill Grange. Love the characters & their relationships which flows through all of these books. This time, they are helping out a drama troupe, whose venue for there production has been flooded. The story includes a few problems that arise during that time. A really entertaining book. Enjoy the read.
I did enjoy the book but found it hard to keep up with who was who but in fairness it is a series of books so may have enjoyed it more if I'd read the earlier books, good book to chill out with at this time of year
I can’t believe this is the last time we will get to visit Mill Grange. The journey we have taken with the merry band of friends (who have become a family) has been magical, heart warming and beautiful.
Tina and Sam are married, Helen and Tom settle into being full time parents for Dylan, Thea and Shaun spend more time part than together and Mabel and Bert? Well they are the glue that holds everyone together.
Dylan’s soon to be stepsister Harriet suggests Mill Grange as a play venue when the one The Outdoor Players is flooded. Will Mill Grange prove to be the place of miracles as in the past?
I shall miss you dear friends, maybe we will hear from you again one day.
I love this series! There is not a single character I would change or moment I would want rewritten. Poor Thea and Shaun though, nothing ever seems to come easily to them. I would have 100% supported Thea had she smacked him upside the head in this book though, especially when he highjacks the conversation at a meal he shouldn't even have been at. I loved Thea as a meddler in this book because she wasn't pushy or manipulative, she just gave a little nudge - Harriet and Rob definitely needed the help! They were so sweet together and just seemed so well suited for one another. All it took was the chance to get through a conversation without interruptions for them to be able to communicate to one another how they felt. A great example of the importance of communication in any relationship! Helen and Tom proved once again how great they are together. I wish she would have been able to make more connections with the other school moms because she is so great I'm sure they would have liked her. Although her hectic schedule did make me feel anxious too! I have no idea how she managed all of it - she's a champ! Sue and Nathan are interesting characters to throw into the mix of everything else going on - they aren't completely likable, but you can't completely hate them either. Complicated people who are allowed to be complicated and don't need to be fixed by the end. Sam and Tina play a slightly smaller part in this story. It's always good to see how Sam is progressing and getting better and how Tina is there by his side no matter what.
Such a great book! Such a great series! I'm a bit sad to be letting these characters go, but I think they are all in a good place by the end.
Mill Grange A place of Miracles!
I absolutely loved this book. Set at Mill Grange a Victorian Manor in Exmoor. The manor is usually used as a retreat for military and is run and supported by ex military who have also had similar experiences with PTSD. Due to a venue mishap an Outdoor theatre company approaches the venue to step in at the last minute.
The book follows the lives of the Mill Grange “family”. I love how developed the relationships between the characters are and the span of generations across the characters. There is so much going on in the book yet it still feels wholesome and every plot line is well developed. The dynamics between the characters are beautiful and tender.
I loved the context of archeology and outdoor theatre again added depth to a winter romance novel. The different perspectives were seamless throughout the book.
The perfect feel good winter story with many twists and turns along the way. The story exudes winter charm and community spirit.
Overall a good group of characters. The story felt a bit all over the place at first. Like there are just a few too many stories and the joining was sometimes disjointed.
This is the final book in the four-book series about Mill Grange and the characters associated with it. The plot surrounding this story evolves around a play held in December. It’s not a Christmas story as the events unfold before Christmas...technically it’s late autumn but billed as the final winter story. It is a feel-good story with a pleasant ending. I’d read the autumn story last year, and I forgot about the characters so re-characterisations would have been best before diving into the story.
Winter Fires at Mill Grange by Jenny Kane is a sweet, lovely small town story with lovely characters. It is the fourth book in her Mill Grange series, so if you haven’t read the other three books it’s a bit more difficult to keep up. There are a lot of characters at the beginning of the story, but it wasn’t too hard to sort them out after a while.
Harriet has finally landed a paying role as an actress, as she prepares for the outdoor production of Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale, she learns that their venue has been flooded and the show is in danger of closing down. She suggests to the production staff that they do the play at Mill Grange. The staff at the Mill Grange are happy to host the troupe of actors and use their grounds for the production. But, that’s a lot of work for the staff, and Thea, Tina, Sam, Shaun, Helen and Tom – along with retirees Bert and Mabel Hastings have a lot on their hands over the Christmas holidays.
I enjoyed this story and all the characters. It seemed like a lot of characters at the beginning of the book, but it wasn’t long before I had them all sorted out in my head. The descriptions of Mill Grange and the village of Upwich are vivid and I felt like I was there in the cold winter watching Gertrude the chicken pecking around the grounds of the Mill Grange.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves women’s fiction and who loves sweet stories set in lovely small village locations. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
