Thank you to Bookouture for letting me take part in this tour and for my copy of this book via Netgalley. I really enjoyed the first 2 books in this series so I was looking forward to reading what Jessie got up to this time.
Jessie Novak is an ER Nurse who also works in the ME department. She has recently become a liaison between the Boston PD and the ME. Jessie has a real detectives mind. She is extremely observant and regularly picks up on the smallest of things. Most people wouldn't even notice the things that she does, Jessie is a great lead character. She is very easy to identify with. She has her own self-doubt that a lot of us can relate to. Jessie does however always seems to end up in danger when she's investigating these cases.
The thing I like about this series is that it is a little different from your usual detective series. With Jessie being from a medical background it puts a different perspective on it. I really enjoy seeing the case through Jessie's eyes.
This case was a sad and creepy one. I'm glad I read this during the day because I think it would put me even more on edge reading this in the dark. The murderer had an all too familiar story. For me, he was rather inconsequential. Yes, he was the killer but he is rather a nobody. He thought he deserved to be special but after what he's done I won't give him the benefit!
This was another great addition to the series and if you haven't started it yet, you really should!
This was really entertaining and an easy read. It didn't really matter that I hadn't read the first two in the series.
The plot was quite good and three times I thought I knew who the culprit and I was wrong. It is rare that it happens but a sign of a good book.
I was given an advance copy by the publishers and netgalley but the review is entirely my own
A woman falls from the roof, her body lies broken and still. Accident? Suicide? Murder?
When Jessie Novak examines the scene, she finds that the girl’s delicate hands have been bruised and her fingernails torn: evidence of a struggle.
She's not the only woman who has lost her life in the previous months. Jessie sees a violent pattern emerging. Working with the Homicide Department, she finds some connections that may lead to the culprit. But then another woman is found dead. The gap between murders is closing: the killer is getting more confident. He will never stop until he is caught.
And Jessie finds a witness .... or does she?
This police procedural is packed with page-turning action. Well-written page-turning twists and turns lead the characters to a commanding conclusion. the characters are solidly drawn and I enjoy the blend of professional with the personal lives. Although 3rd in the series, this is easily read as a stand-alone, however I do recommend reading the books in order.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Another great read in the Jessie Novak series.
A woman’s body is found after it appeared she jumped from the roof of a building.
She’s taken into hospital but is pronounced dead shortly after.
When Jessie looks at the body she’s suspicious as there seems to be no blood loss, so they think she was dead before and must have been thrown off the building.
Other deaths from jumpers are looked into but it isn’t until another woman is found that they can link them altogether.
The race is on to find this killer and unbeknownst to Jessie, he has her in his sights.
This is a gripping thriller that definitely had me racing through the pages to see if they could catch him.
A great read.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
A great addition to the series, the mystery isn't what made this story for me. I figured out the killer pretty much when they hit the page. While the case was interesting it wasn't as gripping as the previous books. This one is all about the characters. Jessie is growing a lot and it shows here. Both professionally and personally. I really enjoyed her interactions with Ralph. And I loved the way her and Sam were this time. There was a small dose of angst there but it didn't overpower things. Who doesn't love Rufus? The ending was great and left me looking forward to more books in this series.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Her Mother’s Cry, the third novel to feature forensic nurse, Jessie Novak, who splits her time as an ER nurse and liaison between the morgue and Boston PD.
Jessie is asked to attend what appears to be a suicide where an unidentified woman has fallen from the roof of a car park. Jessie is suspicious, noting several anomalies and soon the ME confirms she was murdered. When another young woman falls to her death it looks like they are hunting a serial killer.
I thoroughly enjoyed Her Mother’s Cry, which is an exciting, lively read with an absorbing plot. It is told mostly from Jessie’s point of view, allowing the reader to get a close up view of her thought processes, with the unnamed killer chiming in with his thoughts from time to time.
Firstly, I will say that I guessed the killer’s identity almost immediately, not that it spoiled my enjoyment of the novel, because there is so much going on that it was just an idea at the back of my mind. There are murders, misdirection and above all no idea of motive and Jessie’s private life comes under a fair amount of scrutiny too. Al in all enough to keep the reader occupied and turning the pages. It isn’t a deep novel and serendipity plays a major part, but the plotting and writing are lively enough to overcome this.
I must admit that I find Jessie Novak annoying. She’s not a big picture woman and reacts impulsively to whatever is in front of her. This makes her a caring nurse and a dedicated investigator, but also makes this reader scream in frustration at her shortsightedness and inability to see things clearly and logically. It smacks of immaturity. On the other hand, for once I thought that an author got the killer’s thought pattern right. He’s full of hubris and convinced he’s smarter than anyone else. It’s repetitive, but that’s exactly how a narcissist would think.
Her Mother’s Cry is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
This is another series I just discovered. I am always looking for a good mystery series and the synopsis told me that it had potential to be good. And it was good. Jessie Novak is an ER nurse that also consults as a forensic nurse (I had never heard of this before) to the Boston PD. A forensic nurse is one who technically works for the Medical Examiner and acts as an investigator for suspicious or undetermined deaths. Kind of like the tv show Quincey (if you are old enough to remember him).
In this outing, number three in the series, Jessie is covering and ER shift for a friend when the body of a young, female jumper is brought in. Noticing some strange marks on the woman's body, Jessie does not believe that the woman voluntarily jumped form the roof of a parking garage. Investigating what really happened, Jessie and her colleagues begin to suspect a link between this death and the death of several young college co-eds who all leapt to their deaths. Is there a serial killer on the loose?
I liked this book. It had interesting characters, a great mystery and a new type of investigator. The ER and forensic nurse aspect of the story was fascinating. The last series I read that had a Medical Examiner/Coroner type of character was Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series (which were great and then became completely ridiculous). Maybe I just missed them. Anyway, the medical and investigative parts of the plot were fascinating. Less fascinating was the relationship between Jessie and Sam (cop she works with/for). It seemed high schooly. Very "does he like me? I hope he likes me, he's so perfect! And dreamy!" I think part of the problem is that this is book #3. Maybe if I go back and read the other two, I will be more convinced of their relationship. Maybe I'll get a better vibe on Jessie herself. I didn't quite get as strong as a sense of character for Jessie as I would have liked. She felt very surface at times. I want to know her better. ONe character that I did love was Rufus, Jessie's neighbor. He is fantastic & future books need more Rufus.
Overall, this is a good mystery. The plot was strong, logical and kept me guessing. I will definitely add it to my TBR list of authors.
Another fantastic five star read from this author. This series keeps going from strength to strength. The series features Jessie Novack a forensic nurse who works for the Boston PD but also works in the ER her first love. Jessie is involved in a case of a young woman who has jumped to her death or did she??
Little does Jessie realise and her Boston PD colleagues that this is just the tip of an iceberg and they will soon be hunting a prolific serial killer. Intense, chilling and gripping. This book had me sat on the edge of my seat and constantly holding my breath and as for the climax I literally have no nails left. This author has done it again. A must read series and another explosive addition to this gripping and very addictive series. Loved it!!!!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review
In her new dual role as an ER nurse and liaison between the police and coroner's office, Jessie Novak has much to be happy about, including a budding relationship with a police detective. Life is busy and stressful, but Jessie knows she is in the right place. When a series of women "jump" or "fall" to their deaths, Jessie is determined to find the common denominator and solve the mystery. It's a great book that keeps you guessing until the end.
Jessie Novak is a forensic nurse with the Boston PD, along with working in her beloved ER. She is asked to assist in a puzzling "was it murder or was it suicide" jumper case after the woman ends up in her ER. Jessie's keen eye notices strange marks and she's off to work with Sam and Ralph to find answers for these women. She is smart, a bit sassy,. and true to her heart. Readers will fall in love with her vulnerability. And... Rufus is one the best supporting characters around - he stole my heart. Looking forward to where Ms. Gately takes Jessie next considering where this book left off!
This is another good read in the Jessie Novak series. Really good character development, an interesting plot and I liked the writing from the killers point of view. The ER nurse crossing into working with the police department is a different slant the genre and is quite unique, but works very well. The pace keeps going right to the end and I would recommend the series. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
Loving this series even though so far I've only read books 2 and this one book 3, love the aspect of the main character been a forensic nurse. As well as the story lines that this author writes , and the way she writes her bad guys , their dark and some what creepy, especially when your reading from their point of views , you can see the growth of the characters with each book . Other win is the inter action between the main characters, pace that keeps you guessing and keeps you hooked and lets just once again mention the creepiness that comes with each tour of the page, I mean come on , it gives you the feeling that your been watched or that's what it did to me and I was reading mostly at night when everyone else was in bed.
So, the only way I can actually describe this book is WOW! I am actually at a loss for words. This is the first book in a little while that I have got 100% stuck into and refused to put down. Reading late into the night and finishing in the early hours.
I've said this before about these books but I will say it again. The aspect of an ER nurse crossing over into the morgue and the police department makes these books so unique to its genre. It isnt something I have come across before and I think that is the reason I am rapidly becoming obsessed with these books.
There was everything you could possibly want from a crime thriller. A pace that keeps you guessing and keeps you hooked. The creepy that had the hairs on my arms standing up. And also an unexpected little tear at the end.
I cannot wait to read the next book in this series, I have grown a great fondness for the characters especially the friendship between Jessie and Rufus.
What I just adore in a crime thriller is chapters that feature the killers thoughts. In the first opening chapters that run alongside each other we see the aftermath and how he feels. A great opening with so much promise that delivered!
This, third book in the series was a step up from the previous. With serial killer themes I fully immersed myself into the storyline which had great pace and a strong premise.
The various characters compliment each other and the blossoming relationship between two main characters really pulls the series together and secures it as a well developed timeline that spans the subsequent books. I’m enjoying seeing each of them grow through the coming novels, especially Rufus, the 70 something neighbour who is like a father to Jessie. He has some wonderful traits and their relationship is lovely to read.
With a promotion for Jessie brings a new role which I’m very excited to read more about as it reminds me of the Kay Scarpetta series written by Patricia Cornwell with the medical examiner themes. A great series that has become one I will continue to follow and can’t wait to read the next in the series.
Another great read in this series that I read in nearly one sitting. It was gripping, twisty and so readable. I really enjoyed it.
Thanks so much to my favorite publisher in the world Bookouture for this third book in the Novak series!
I have had so much fun reading this series and have read everyone to date!
Jessie Novak is a badass and I've enjoyed watching and reading her story and her book unfolds!
Such a roller coaster read and will leave you sitting on the edge of your seat.
I was totally hooked on this book from the very first scene!
Gately has a way with her writing that sucks the reader in instantly.
I didn't want this book to end and I read so fast by the time I was done..... I was so upset it had to end!
I hope this series continues and I see more of the amazing Jessie Novak!
Thanks so much Bookouture, NetGalley and Author form this eARC!
I will post to my platforms closer to pub date!
Book 3 in the series and throughly enjoyable.
If you are wanting a great escape this is exactly the book you will want to read. You will be so glad you did – I know I was glad I got to read it. The premise of this book sounded interesting from the very beginning. It was a quick, easy read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really enjoyed this latest installment in the Jessie Novak series..
I didn't realize until I started reading this series how much I would like the nurse/detective dynamic.. I also love all of the side characters in this story, especially Rufus.. He is an adorable older gentleman who Jessie checks in on every day..
Jessie is working with the police as a forensic nurse. She is in a new relationship, and her mother has popped back into her life, after thinking her dead for years. So she has a lot on her plate. When the body of a woman who may have jumped off a building is brought in, Jessie finds some suspicious evidence.. leading her to believe the woman may have been dead before she fell.. Thankfully the MEs office agrees, the fact that some of the evidence also matches some other cases of "Jumpers" opens up questions about some past cases, and when more women begin "falling" off buildings Jessie and the police know they have to figure out whats going on before anyone else dies..
Jessie normally works with a detective named Sam, but in this book he is off prepping for a court case on a different crime, and while I love Sam and their relationship I did really like seeing her work with other people.
They mystery was really good and I had no idea who the killer was until it was revealed. I really liked how we got a look through the killers eyes and a peak into his thoughts.
I can't wait to read the next book and see what kind of trouble Jessie will get herself into..
This is another great book starring our forensic nurse Jessie Novak. Her role is to assist the Boston Police department, but nosy as she is, she often follows her own path and I believe soon Detective Sam will not only have silver eyes but his hair will turn that colour too. 😊
She makes my hair stand up sometimes and I feel like screaming : bad idea, go back, wait, but she does not hear me. She feels so strong about bringing justice to ‘her’ victims and wants to put the culprits behind bars rather sooner than later, she often forgets about the dangers.
In the meantime, she also has to deal with a ghost from the past. Will she let them in? Will she be able to put the past where it belongs or has she been hurt to deeply to do that?
When she is feeling a bit down, she can always count on her friend and neighbour Rufus and vice versa. Maybe he is even more a bit of a granddad to her and she loves him dearly.
Speaking about love… Are the feeling between her and her boyfriend growing stronger every day or is there someone lurking in the background, ready to step in?
I really enjoyed this story. The baddie is taking a lot of risks, but still thinks he can outsmart everyone. That is until his and Jessie’s paths crossed… 5 stars
Thank you
