Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a free ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily.
This book is described as gripping but I found it rather slow and unrealistic. I cannot understand why the main character finds it so difficult to challenge her mother about concerns relating to her care of Isabelle, particularly when her Mom tells Sophie, the babysitter, that she has 'cleared it' with Jessica that she's to send Sophie away when Jessica knows nothing about it. Jessica thinks it is acceptable to leave her toddler alone in the house because she's sleeping. The many texts that Mark hides from Jessica, telling her it's his boss do not seem to raise her suspicions, only anger. When she receives threatening messages through the neighbourhood group she takes no action to report it to the police. There is a major error at the end of chapter 11 when we are told Isabelle's car is parked at the curb; we know this should relate to Sophie's car but this should have been picked up by a proof reader or editor. I read two thirds of the novel before admitting I wasn't sufficiently interested in finding out the perpetrator to finish reading the novel.
We Live Next Door buy Laura Wolfe is an unsuspecting psychological thriller. Jessica and her husband live in a beautiful house in a nice neighborhood. All of that slowly starts to unravel when her neighbor is found dead. Good read and had me guessing the entire book.
When the neighborhood busybody is found dead, everyone is a suspect. Just when I thought I had it figured out another twist would come and I'd have to start over lol. This was a really fun book. I definitely did not see that end coming!
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. Mark and Jessica move into her childhood home with their daughter, Isabella. While Jessica is out walking her dog one night, she sees her much hated neighbor, Barbara, looking out her window with an expression in her face that she was screaming for help.
The next day Jessica finds out that her neighbor slipped and fell in her bathroom and died. Barbara's son is the first person who everyone feels had something to do with his mother's death. Phillip is a loner who is always high.
Jessica starts receiving messages through the neighborhood app which she feels are threatening and goes to the police. Jessica gets too involved in figuring out what happened to her neighbor when another tragedy hits.
I enjoyed parts of this book but some of it just dragged on too much.
I loved this one. I loved the writing style, I loved the characters, I loved the dog! Plot twist I DID NOT see coming!
This book was a page turner from beginning to end. Very captivating with amazing character development. A grumpy neighbor. A unexpected murder. And then, unexpected accidents. What is going on. Who can she trust? And is her family safe? In a neighborhood so perfect on her outside - it is sure ugly and full of secrets when you start to get down to it on the inside. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Our main character, Jessica, is a bored stay at home Mum and housewife, with way too much time on her hands. After the sudden death of a local neighbour her imagination gets the better of her and she starts to conduct her own amateur investigation in to the events leading up to it.
However, she doesn’t really. The Police dismiss her concerns, chalking the death up to an accident. When another sudden death occurs, she’s equally ignored – which makes no sense given the actual circumstances. Who are these Police? Why are they so incompetent?
Rather than doing much in the way of real investigation, Jessica spends her entire time having the most boring internal monologues, which go round and round and round in circles. As a character, she is utterly dull, and I found myself hoping, on more than one occasion, someone would off her and put me out of my misery. After a slightly disagreement with her Mum, she phones her husband to ask him to come home – really? Why? I got dizzy thanks to all the eye rolling this book made me do.
The other characters are also equally unlikable – the husband who is always working late and apparently hates his mother-in-law; the best friend who is so perfect, but not, but is, but isn’t; the neighbours who we’re told just enough of to dislike, but nothing really substantial.
As for the plot – it just didn’t work for me. There was no pace, nothing really happened, there was nothing remotely clever about it, and honestly, there were more red herrings than a fishmongers. Personally, I believe if you have to rely on multiple “bad guys” to keep your reader entertained, you’ve missed the point somewhere along the way.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I’ll be honest, I was surprise to see it was not a debut novel. It felt like a debut novel. Such a shame, as the blurb sounded really good; though, I suspect it was written by someone who had not read the book, as it’s not entirely accurate.
Overall, a disappointment.
A huge thanks to Bookouture for my e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
From the onset I was engrossed with this fast paced, keeps you guessing and continue to read domestic thriller that totally keeps you engrossed till the end. Can you ever truly know your neighbors? I devoured this deliciously fast paced thriller and I highly recommend it!!
This book is exactly what I needed. Laura Wolfe kept me sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time. AND THAT TWIST!?
I love a good psychological thriller! I highly recommend this for a quick read!
This was my first book of Wolfe's but now I want to read all of her work. I think she could get anyone over a reading slump!!!
Jessica Millstone buys her childhood home in Ridgeview Pines with her husband, Mark. When one of the neighbours, Barbara Draper is found dead in the bathroom the police verdict is accidental death, but Jessica suspects she was murdered. With a sizeable list of suspects all with plausible motives and closets of skeletons, this is a compelling read. There is an underlying air of menace and a steady pace. The author tells the story in such a way that I couldn't settle on a definite culprit. With some great characterisation of people I enjoyed disliking, We Live Next Door is well worth a look.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Bookouture via NetGalley at my request and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
I loved this story. Jessica, her husband Mark and their daughter Isabelle moved into their new house. It was actually the house she grew up in and some of the old neighbours still lived there. Two doors down an elderly woman died and a few days later so did her son. It was recorded as an accident, but Jessica suspected they were murdered. Nobody believes her, not even the police, so she takes matters into her hands, but someone is watching her and sending her threatening messages. Her family is in danger, so she decides to stop investing, but is it too late?
A captivating and riveting read! Full of unpredictable and clever twists!
Jessica is thrilled to buy her childhood home in Ridgeview Pines with her husband, Mark. At first, it seems like the perfect place until her neighbour, Barbara, is found dead, apparently having accidentally slipped in the bathtub.
It seemed everyone and neighbours hated Barbara and were not shy in expressing their lack of remorse at the startling demise of their neighbour on the Neighbourhood List message board.
But Jessica is not convinced that this was an unfortunate accident, and her instinct told her there was something sinister at play.
Did someone murder Barbara? Was it someone in the neighbourhood? Was it someone even closer?
An excellently written story with clever twists, sort of like a classic “who did it?” story that keeps you guessing up until the end.
The tension is built up slowly but effectively, and there is so much to chew on that I never lost interest.
Hats off to the author for a brilliant book! Highly recommend this one!
BOOKWORMS Review:
Jessica lives in a quiet suburb in Detroit. One of those communities where everyone knows everyone elses business and people look out for each other. Or do they? When her neighbour Barbara meets an untimely demise Jessica plays sleuth trying to figure out what happened. She soon becomes the target of vicous messages on the neighbours app..when she uncovers scandals in the neighbourhood. Has she just put herself in a Killers line of sight? A somewhat slow burner for me..but worth the wait, for the twists. A cracking good domestic thriller.
With thanks to Laura Wolfe,Netgalley and Bookouture for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
MY RATING: 📘 📘 📘 📘
So, who is the odd family on a street in the neighborhood in Ridgeview Pines? Well it might be pretty easy to figure that out by reading a message board called The Neighbor List. It is as compulsive as many social media outlets are and now that Jessica and her husband Mark have moved into the neighborhood, reading this message board daily becomes part of her everyday activities. One neighbor is Barbara Draper.
Jessica is quite pleased that she and her husband Mark have been able to buy her childhood home. Her neighbor Barbara has always been hated but it is shocking when she is found dead. After the obituary had been posted, the message board blows up. The comments were not kind. Jessica feels like she must find out what happened. Even so, Jessica realizes that her own thoughts are becoming disingenuous. Was it an accident or was it murder?
The police have determined that it was an accidental death but this is not what Jessica believes and she will do whatever she can to get to the bottom of what happened to Barbara. There are things about Jessica has noticed and bringing these things to the police brings no results. Meanwhile, Jessica begins to have serious problems. Not only did she already have problems with Mark, which seem to be increasing, disturbing messages directly towards her really become very unnerving. What is more is strange things begin happening every time her mother cares for their daughter Isabelle.
This thrilling book began with drama between Jessica and Mark but quickly became another scenario altogether. The tension never let up for one moment - whether it was the message board itself, Barbara’s son or various neighbors -Jessica finds herself completely invested as to what happened to her neighbor.
This is the perfect read if you looking for something that is really intense to capture your attention from the very start. Like a roller coaster with its twists and turns, this book is a perfect ride. More questions than answers are sure to keep any reader drawn to this well-written book by Laura Wolfe.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
First, I want to thank Laura Wolfe, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
We Live Next Door by Laura Wolfe is fast paced, thrilling, suspenseful, tragic, full of secrets and has a wicked twist!
Laura would like to dedicate this book to Lisa, her most treasured cousin and friend.
WOW! What a horrific way to die! Like the characters in the book I was in shock too! How can someone drown in the bathtub?! It is just crazy!! My heart went out to her son!
I loved how there was a mystery surrounding her death if it was an accident or something more. Oh the drama, secrets, and major revelations!
Izzabelle I adored so much in We Live Next Door! She was just the sweetest little thing ever who loved her Mummy and Gwamma so much! She was definitely one tough cookie.
Jessica was passionate about baking cakes and incorporating her love of art into it. She had a dream of designing cakes that showed off her own tattoo designs. I thought it was a very creative idea.
What set this book apart from the rest was it incorporated the chat feature called Neighbor List. Between the neighbors they discussed various topics that were happening around them. A lot of positive and negative topics are shown.
My face lit up and cried happy tears with the surprise ending. I didn’t in a million years see that coming at all!!
I enjoyed this story. The author has created what from outside looks like a quiet and charming small neighbourhood but we all know that not everything is as it seems. Probably the highlight for me was the neighbourhood app and all the replies and snarky comments on different situations. And the primary concern for everyone is the murder and mystery around it, of one of loved/hated habitants, Barbara Draper.
Jessica was an interesting character and maybe a heroine that I would want to be friends with in real life. There are a few unexpected turns that I haven’t expected, but they surely add more to the story and it was interesting to read it throughout Jessica’s thoughts and voice, even if it was really repetitive, I think anyone in that given situation will do the same.
A page-turner-suspense book that made me want to look forward to more stories by the author.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy.
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'We Live Next Door' by Laura Wolfe.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Laura Wolfe, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 5th November 2021.
This is the second book I have read by this author. I have previously read 'Her Best Friend's Lie' which I highly recommend.
I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for fans of The Couple Next Door, The Woman in the Window and Behind Closed Doors.' I am a huge fan of 'Behind Closed Doors' and 'The Couple Next Door' so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a huge fan of Laura and if this is half as good as 'Her Best Friend's Lie' it is sure to be a page turning read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of 39 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Detroit, Michigan, USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in first person perspective and the main protagonist is Jess. The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them.
'We Live Next Door' discusses some topics that may trigger some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Laura discusses/includes threats to a child.
OMG!!! SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!! WHAT HAVE I JUST READ!?!?!? Laura Wolfe you are a writing legend!!!
This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all listening to Roo barking and feeling the sweat run down your back.
Another huge success by Laura!!! This book has got to be the most heart racing books I've read in a long time, if not ever!!! It had be hook, line and sinker from the first page and I could not put it down!!! Every time I said one more chapter it ended on a cliffhanger and I just had to know what was going on!!! If you are going to read this then clear your day because it is truly unputdownable. I started this yesterday afternoon and finished it at approx 2am, read it in one sitting and although I'm knackered today it was 1000000% worth it!!! I loved that you got to meet so many of the neighbours and that there was such a a mix of personalities and so many suspects!!! It keeps you constantly guessing who did what!! It really does make you think how life can change so quickly and different decisions can change a life. It also makes you think how looks can be deceiving. It is filled with friendship, romance, lies, murder, secrets, twists, turns and everything you could want from a psychological thriller along with some MASSIVE BOMBSHELLS which will leave you absolutely shocked!!! I for one was NOT expecting that at all!!! I also loved how the book ended. This book would make a fantastic movie!!
As previously mentioned there is such a large mix of characters which makes it a realistic neighbourhood setting. All the characters were strong and realistic as well as hiding their own secrets. I really liked Jess from the start and along with Bree, all the characters were realistic, well developed and had strong characteristics and personalities. I did absolutely NOT expect that humongous bombshell at all. What an absolute twist!!! I can hand on my heart say that I cannot remember when I was so gobsmacked by a book twist but Laura you have done just that!!! This book is rammed with suspense and tension and will keep you biting your nails, on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding while your flipping the pages because you just cant stop.
If you read one book on your life, make sure it is this!!!! I would love to see this turned into a movie and Laura I really hope you are working on your next psychological thriller at this moment because this book will go far!!! A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on what promises to be a MASSIVE success!!!
Overall an absolutely heart racing, nail biting, unputdownable psychological thriller with a bomb shell you will not see coming!!!
Genres covered in this novel include Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, and Psychological Fiction amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of 'The Couple Next Door' , 'The Woman in the Window', 'Behind Closed Doors' and ANYONE AND EVERYONE LOOKING FOR AN EXPLOSIVE READ!!!
316 pages.
This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle via Amazon or free on kindle unlimited which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

This ARC was provided to me via Kindle by Bookouture and #NetGalley for my honest opinion. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Twists, clever and entertaining. This one is a thriller worth picking up.
A fun, clever and twisty read that makes you think about who lives around you and what might be happening in your neighborhood.
I felt the pace was a bit of a slow burn, but the story itself was entertaining and captivating. It is a nice light thriller if you are not looking for something to heavy and that will keep you guessing until the very end.
I want to thank NetGalley, Laura Wolfe and Bookouture for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
This was a frustrating book for me. The premise of the book was very reminiscent of Megan Miranda's 𝘚𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢 𝘘𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦, and I thoroughly enjoyed that book! But, I have a rule...one that I had ignored to read 𝘞𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘋𝘰𝘰𝘳.
Any time a title has anything along the lines of "𝘼𝙣 𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙮 𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙨𝙮𝙘𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖 𝙟𝙖𝙬-𝙙𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙬𝙞𝙨𝙩", I HARD PASS on the novel. I have never had a good experience with one that tries to tell you that it will be "jaw dropping" or "gripping". Simply, I find that they don't live up to what they promise. I was hoping Wolfe’s novel would be different for me.
I gave this one a chance, and found that the writing just wasn't for me. The story goes from an accidental bathtub death of a neighbor to "it must be a conspiracy and a murder!" within the same short paragraph. The conversations felt awkward, situations felt too far fetched, and segments of the book were far too drawn out for my taste. I have no doubt someone else may love it - but it just wasn't my cup of tea.
I was given an ARC of this story to read; but thoughts and opinions are all my own. Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the chance to read this title.
