Oh this book was deliciously dark. Book 13 in the series and it still feels fresh and new.
Welcome back to Black Rock Falls aka Murder Capital of the World. This time Jenna, Dave and the team are stranded at the ski resort. With a few hundred people at a crime writers convention. ......and one seriously deranged killer.
The tension mounts with every new body discovered. Add in tension between Jenna and Dave and you get a fast paced, page turning thriller.
This book kept me reading late into the night. I can highly recommend this book and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Omg, Omg! I don't know where to begin! I am lost for words! OMG! That was excellent! I didn't want it to end. I want more. The last part nearly drove me crazy! Damn, that was good! I will now start this series from the very beginning and I'm never gonna let go until I'm on track! Kicking myself because I had no idea about this series until I saw it here.
Jenna Alton and David Kane were both amazing and I instantly warmed up to their characters. They were perfectly crafted, the scenes were fast-paced and cleverly executed, the mystery of the crimes and the gripping suspense in every page pulled me. I just love it. Please keep the books coming, D.K! Good job! I could you hug you right now!
Thank you to Netgalley and the ever generous Bookouture for my ARC!
Fallen Angel by D.K. Hood is the 13th in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Former DEA, Jenna Alton is now the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana. Her past is a secret. Deputy David Kane's background is also a secret. He was a Special Forces sharpshooter, and a bodyguard to the President. Then there is Forensic Scientist Shane Wolfe, who is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Jenna and the team have been called to Glacial Heights Ski Resort on the outskirts of town. There is a crime-book convention going on, and the resort is booked for two weeks with authors, publishers, and readers. One of the literary agents has been reported missing, and they find her body trapped beneath the frozen lake.
The team decides to keep the murder quiet, and soon the crime-book enthusiasts start talking about the missing woman as a game. They think that it is actually a crime mystery set up by the organizers. So the guests are not taking this quite as seriously as the police, or perhaps as seriously as they should. Soon there is another murder.
With over 200 potential murderers, narrowing the suspects down is quite the chore. At least with the roads closed due to blizzard conditions, nobody can leave. Unfortunately, that also means they have a murderer on the loose.
Meanwhile, the relationship between Jenna and Dave has improved, and they are now living together, but this case may prove to be too much.
My Opinions:
There are so many things I dislike about this series. The female Sheriff usually playing second fiddle to her male second in command. The FBI always being called in because they can't handle the job. (I've been complaining about those two things in most of my reviews of past books, and was happy to see Jenna finally voice those same views in her fight with Kane). Moving on....Carter and Wolfe's daughter Emily..... I don't particularly like either of them although Emily really annoyed me in this one -- she's a little over-bearing and full of herself.
As well, sometimes the writing leaves a lot to be desired. For example, Wolfe calls Julie a magnet for killers, and in the next chapter the killer calls her a magnet as well. It's just a bit much.
So, all these complaints, and yet I am still reading this series. Why? Because the plots can't be beat. This one in particular was great! Although I had a good idea as to the identity of the killer, the process and techniques the author used to get the reader to the conclusion were very well done. There were enough red herrings, and side stories to keep me interested.
Again, all my grievances seem to fly out the window, because it ended up being another fast and entertaining read. And....I will continue to read this series.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I loved this book. Jenna Alton has been placed in witness protection (apparently you will learn this in a book earlier in the series). She is now the sheriff of the small ski town of Black Rock Falls. There is a book/author's convention being held at a local ski resort. Sheriff Alton gets called to the resort after a dead body is found. Once it is determined that foul play was involved, the mystery begins. A blizzard has everyone confined to the resort which works well for the investigation of the murder. Then the bodies start piling up. I love the dynamics between Jenna and Kane. Are they just friends or something more? The characters in this book mesh well together. I could envision the snow drifts around the resort. This was a fantastic mystery. The author provides a myriad of possible suspects that will have you guessing until the end. If you like a good mystery, you will like this book. This is the 13th book in the series. I will definitely be going back to #1 in the series!
Ooh, Fallen Angel was exciting, claustrophobic, and it certainly gave me the chills. The setting was amazing and I found myself getting in the mood for Christmas as I read. I loved the ski resort location. Lately, I’ve really enjoyed reading thrillers set in snowy resorts and all I can say is, this book was brill.
The relationship between Jenna and Dave kept sending the drama into overdrive and the resort guests, what a collection! I found myself captivated by these characters. Also, it’s so well written, I barely saw the words on the page.
As for the crime element - hold onto your bobble hats. It’s icy, calculating and the stuff nightmares are made of. Absolutely fantastic, absorbing and totally thrilling.
If like me, you enjoy a frost filled, action packed read then this murder mystery is the perfect choice!
Detectives Kane & Alton #13
Hurrying along the snow-covered path, she knows she's not alone when she hears the light tread of someone behind her. Panic rising in her chest, she picks up the pace. But she doesn't even have the chance to scream before everything goes black.
When a beautiful young woman is reported missing from her hotel room on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her Deputy Kane are devastated to discover her pale lifeless body trapped beneath the frozen lake. nearby. It's Jenna who finds a single pearl earring buried in the frosted grass that gives them their first lead.
Sheriff Jenna Alton and David Kane have been called to a hotel on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls where a crime writers convention is being held. A body has been found frozen in the lake, Then another person is murdered and everyone at the convention becomes a suspect. A huge blizzard only makes finding evidence and the culprit harder for Jenna and her team.
I've always been drawn quickly into every book in this fantastic series straight away. It's a tense and engaging read. We get snippets every now and again from the killer, but they don't give much away. Will Kane and Alton prevent anymore murders happening? You'll need to read this well written and thought out book to find out.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #FallenAngel in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to netgalley, D.K Hood and Bookouture for the ARC of Fallen Angel in exchange for my fair and honest options.
This is book 13 in the series I highly recommend reading the first 12 before diving into this one.
A body is found in the frozen lake at the sky Lodge during a crime writers convention. Jenna and her team head up with so many guests there and the snow falling heavily Jenna Kane Zac and Emma decide to stay whilst the remaining team head back to town. With so many people and a murderer to catch will they catch them before another person is found dead.
I frigging love this entire series, I stumbled across it last month and was so excited when I realised this one was avaliable, this had easily become my favourite American crime series .
As usual we have Jenna and Kane with their underlying relationship as a clear theme throughout the book. It's their secret hut its the worse kept secret in town. Further more they aren't really together which I found very confusing considering the fact they are planning a future together. Bit anyway I enjoyed this part of the novel. I'm just on edge because I'm so routing for their happily ever after. But only time will tell.
This case was an interesting one and I love how Hood always gives his killers a voice, this has become even more so in this series with the added bonus of Jo the friendly local FBI behavioural analyst who helps profile with Dave. I liked this killer he was so insane it made it an enjoyable read I found myself wanting to know the why, for once I couldn't guess the who. But I love it when I can't as so rare.
I found with the srtioudness of the crimes the added humour throughout the book killed me. There's a moment between Dave and Zac I could see what was going to happen before it did and I was in hysterics. Rollie as always adds humour, with Sandy ofcourse going into labour during the snow storm there were so moments to funny I had to stop reading for a second. So don't worry with all the gruesome you will still laugh the main in these stories are so funny aswell as over protective.
The prose was beautifully done, I felt I was there I could see the descriptions I was reading and I could picture the scenes as they played out. This is a skill Hood had they are able to write so well and change the tone depending on the characters. It's truly great , I have literally read all if this sorties thus far in a 2 months i truly will b sad without Jenns and and Dave go from my next books.
So ofcourse I would recommend this book was great and its just so apt for fellow crime loving readers, that said if you loved Wendy Dranfield, Lisa Regan or Stacey Green this series is for you. If you've read books 1 to 12 well you're already sold Its an easy 5 stars room on book number 14!!!
This is book #13 of the Kane and Alton series, and whilst it is part of a series it can easily be read as a standalone book. This is the 13th book of the series, and 13 is certainly unlucky for Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane when they find themselves in the middle of another serial killer murder case. Investigating a missing woman at a crime writers convention, Alton and Kane are cut off when a blizzard hits the area. The bodies then begin to pile up and the storyline takes us on a rollercoaster of thrills, tension and suspense in a bid to find the killer.
I love this series of books and will happily put other books aside to get a new one of these read first! It’s great to be back in Black Rock Falls, and as usual it’s not only the weather which is chilling as there’s another serial killer on the block. I loved the scenario of a crime writer convention and assumed the author wrote a lot of that from personal experience! The book began straight into the action, and we are brought straight into the killer’s storyline with chapters from their perspective. Of course, you don’t get to find out who’s behind the killers until way into the story, and try as I might I couldn’t work it out for myself!
This book is literally filled with heart-stopping and stomach-churning moments and I found myself moving closer and closer to the edge of my seat as I read. I love the main characters from this series, and they all worked well together again. Of course, Kane and Alton stole the show yet again with their determined detective work, but I shall keep my mouth firmly closed as to what is going on in their personal lives! With a fast paced and high action plot, this book kept me glued to the pages throughout with the good guys doing what they do best and the bad guys being bad! As always it was exciting to read and I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
(4.5) DK Hood you have absolutely ruined book signings for me, lol. Now I will be wondering whats going on between agents, authors, publishers. In all seriousness I think we saw a little of what all our authors have to go through, and it makes my heart hurt. Than when I saw that first look at Julie, I was yelling no, no, no. This was a book of twists, straight to my heart, with the book signings, Julie and then Kane and Jenna. The murders, yes people, more than one, rain the gambit from common to uncommon with different levels of destruction. I am not a fan of "locked room" mysteries, or in this case, murder :) Because its my least famous premise I had to keep narrowing my focus to prevent that. Thank you for the arc Bookouture, you are one of my favorite publishers bringing such a multitude of fantastic authors and I grateful for the day I stumbled across DK Hood, book 1 on an audio book, and I have been hooked ever since. As one fan said, bring on #14.
This is exactly the creepy type of book to be reading in a dark and cold night. I’m.over 5e setting: a murder mystery conference where actual murder occur. I do marvel at the creativityHood has for each of the murders that occurred. It simply made my blood run cold. I actually figured out the killer early on, but liked how alternating chapters allowed the killer to give insight, I loved the final scene, very sighworthy.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Fallen Angel, the thirteenth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane of the fictional Black Rock Falls, Montana Sheriff’s Office.
Dakota Storm is reported missing from her chalet at the local ski resort while participating in a crime fiction convention. Her murdered body is found under a frozen lake and just as Jenna and Dave start investigating another body is found. With the resort locked down due to a blizzard they begin the desperate hunt for a ruthless killer.
I enjoyed Fallen Angel, which is another stirring addition to a good series. It follows the usual format of several murders, a slow build up of information and a tense and exciting finale, but as ever it’s the scenario that makes the novel. This is particularly imaginative for the reader, maybe not for the author as it may be a case of write what you know, being set at a crime fiction convention. I found the business end of publishing discussed in the novel both eye opening and cut throat. So, crime is the order of the day, due to the lockdown the suspect pool is limited and that leaves the murders and they are epic, inventive with a clever premise. The author did a lot with her limited geographical scope.
The narrative is split between Jenna on the investigative side and the killer on the other. I liked the investigation, but the killer is just another overweening narcissistic psychopath with nothing original to say. It ticks all the boxes, but I can’t say I found the voice fascinating or compulsive, so it left me cold. I didn’t guess the killer’s identity as it’s well hidden as one of several.
Fallen Angel is a good read that I can recommend.
Really enjoyed this book, it was full of tension and suspense. Had me madly turning the pages late into the night. I did notice a couple of errors in the book where the name of the person had been used incorrectly, Emily had been written instead of Julie twice that I noticed. Apart from that this book was awesome!
I am a big fan of this series of books with Detectives Kane and Alton. I loved the setting of this book, the ski resort outside of town, it worked very well for a crime writers festival. I struggled with this book in the series, perhaps it was a bit rushed out, I don't know but it was not my favourite. It failed to grip me like the previous ones and I figured out the killer early on. I would still recommend the series, however, just not this episode. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
I liked the plot line of this book, it was different and creative. The setting made the murder mystery more interesting. This is a good addition to a solid series
4.5⭐
Fallen Angel is book thirteen in D.K. Hoods brilliantly thrilling Detectives Kane and Alton series and it shows no signs of slowing down even if this one did get off to a slow start for me. But with characters who feel like old friends, a killer who manages to keep on killing even though the team are on site there was plenty to enjoy and I loved the close proximity, the cat and mouse feel as the team desperately search for clues whilst contending with a crime book festival full of eager authors, agents and fans who think the murders are all part of an elaborate game.
And honestly, once I got into it, I was hooked and stayed up late into the night as I couldn't get enough and I had no clue who the killer was in fact I had this whole crazy yet plausible theory worked out, but I was no where near right and that is what makes this series so great, and why it's quickly become a big favourite of mine.
Would happily recommend.
This book is seriously disturbing! Kane and Jenna are back at it again only this time a killer is offing people at a book signing/ writer retreat for crime writers. The irony ensues. I love the cover and just love this dynamic duo.
What did I like? I’m wondering if I will sleep tonight after reading this one. I loved the way the story was presented and the idea was so different. This author always manages to make me squirm and the story even has some angst between Jenna and Kane. Which was quite delicious!
Would I recommend or buy? I just love this series! I need to buy them all, they just seem to suck me in every time. If you haven’t read this author then that’s a serious injustice! Five fantastic stars of entertainment! Keep writing and I will definitely keep reading!
I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review!
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this gripping book
a writers convention
blizzard conditions
and murdered bodies turning up
plus kane and jenna have their first ever argument....oh my word..
this book has it all gory bits and domestics, what more could you want....
as the blizzards take control can kane and jenna work out who the murderer is before he gets hold of another person and kills them...being stuck in the convention full of authors and publishers who think its all part of the get together is making it harder for them all to find the killer and as the killer has set his sights on one of wolfes daughter, the stakes are really high this time
wow d.k.hood has done it again...but added another element to kane and jennas relationship that has you gasping and leaves you reading frantically to find out what happens....brilliant, oh and who the murderer is...secondary really to kane and jenna...
bring on the next book in this brilliant series
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the arc of this book. I am going to find the other books in this series, as this was my first one. I would be more invested in the characters had I read the series from the beginning. I found it hard to keep track of who was who because sometimes first names were used, sometimes last names. The story was good and I loved how it was set at a book convention. When the book really got going it went at a breakneck pace, but before that it was pretty slow. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4, but it would probably have been more if I had read the whole series.
The best that can happen is an unexpected twist when you almost had a clue and all of the sudden you don't. It had me guessing since the beginning. This is a series I would love to read since book one. Excellent!
Another edition to the well established Kane & Alton series that has yet to disappoint, exceptional as always.
A tense engaging exciting read that had me hooked from the first page to the last.
Loved catching up with the gang (they feel like old friends) and their goings on, written in a wonderful setting with an amazing plot that is flawless in it's execution.
