Ginny and Cameron are married with a 3-year-old daughter. From day 1 Ginny has had problems being a mother. For one Skylar came out of the womb screaming and hasn’t stopped since she doesn’t sleep through the night and both parents are just plain exhausted. Ginny befriends a woman named Alex in the park one day and after a while, the truth is revealed that she is a therapist. And now Ginny is seeing Alex as a patient. Ginny has severe postpartum that has gone untreated too long. She also suffers from depression and anxiety. It’s a toxic mix.
Ginny begins therapy and leaves everything to Cameron. Cameron develops a bond with Skylar, which Ginny resents.
Alex is secretly seeing Cameron also, but it goes from therapy into an affair. And the book turns upside down. Skylar goes missing in the middle of the night. Everyone is a suspect. Including the parents. This is a fast whodunit thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed!

I enjoyed the last bit of this book but it took a very long time to get sucked into the story. Overall, it was a good read.
The morning after her birthday party, a three year old is missing. Her mother had a lot to drink the night before, and so did her father, but they locked the doors before going to bed. They're both sure of that. Only Ginny might not be as sure as she thinks she is. She's been having trouble coping since their daughter's birth and leans heavily on her husband to help her manage things.
The plot quickly jumps to events from six months before their little girl went missing. The book is entertaining but I never really liked either of the parents. At times it felt like they were more focused on their own relationship and whether extended family members were reacting the way they wanted them to than they were on the fact that their little girl was gone. They're both making stupid mistakes along the way. I felt like this one was a kind of run of the mill domestic thriller.
I maybe one of the very few who found this book to be quite an exhausting read; one which I struggled to get through.
Ginny and Cameron Hale's three-year old daughter, Skylar, goes missing the night after her third birthday party. With Ginny's history of depression and her doubts that Cameron might be having an affair, both are quick to point fingers at the other. But with each passing hour, they grow more frantic to find Skylar as they realize that they were being manipulated all along.
The author has done a remarkable job of delving deep into the struggles of someone suffering from depression and the toll that it takes on the immediate family. Infact the first half of the book deals extensively with Ginny and Cameron's counselling sessions with their psychologist, Alex. While these conversations may be an eye-opener for those not so well-versed with depression and a possible trigger for those familiar with it, at the risk of sounding insensitive, I must admit that it was emotionally and mentally draining.
I wasn't able to connect with any of the characters in the story. By about 50% of the book, the identity of the kidnapper was evident. The latter half of the plot where the mystery-solving actually takes place was fast-paced and the climax was also good.
Overall, a well-written book, but just not my cup of tea.
Thank you Bookoture and NetGalley
Ginny and Cameron's daughter, Skylar, goes missing after her birthday party. The search for her reveals cracks in their marriage. Will they find her? Will their marriage survive?
This was decent enough, but predictable. I figured out who took Ginny, and the rest was obvious.
I don’t think I’ve ever read more books by an author than I have by Kiersten Modglin. Midway through this book I felt really seen as a mother by the ppd items discussed and the hardships of motherhood. I really appreciate the author going outside of her normal book comfort zone and providing such a place to be heard. This book read so easily and while I suspected parts of the big twist some of them still really threw me for a loop. And that ending really was a nail biter. As with all of Kierstens book I flew through it but two nights it did give me nightmares so if you have small children I would suggest reading it during the day.
I was lucky to receive the Missing Daughter by Kiersten Modglin from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review and opinion. Another great book by this author. She is for sure on my list of must reads from here on out! I thought I had this book figured out but boy was I wrong! There are so many twists and turns that you won't even see the ending coming! Keep up the great work and I can't wait to read more by this author!
This was one of those thrillers that made you think that anyone could be guilty! I LOVE those books, because it makes me put on my detective hat and try to piece together details to try to figure out what is going on. . It keeps me turning pages until I can't keep my eyes open. . Ginny was dealing with depression since her daughter Skylar, who is now three years old, was born . Cameron, her husband was having a hard time dealing with this for so long and their relationship was strained to the limit. Ginny met a new friend in the park who soon became her therapist too. Many issues came up with this friendship/therapist relationship . Soon Ginny is caught up in a web of lies that tangles her and her husband and daughter in it. Then Skyler goes missing and Ginny and Cameron will do anything to get her back. The secrets that will be revealed will shock you!
The morning after Skylar's birthday party, Ginny and Cameron find their little daughter missing.
I found the story dragged a bit, the characters weren't very likable, and it was pretty easy to guess who the kidnapper was. Still, it was a decent, entertaining read.
Ginny and Cameron have a beautiful, young daughter, Skylar. Ginny has suffered from depression since Skylar was born and finally begins to feel relief when she finds a therapist she feels she can trust. Things take a twist when Skylar goes missing, and all of the family members and friends become potential suspects. This was a good thriller!
Ginny is still suffering from postpartum depression years after her daughters birth. Her husband Cameron and therapist Alex are trying to help her cope with it. But when her daughter goes missing after her birthday party, all the progress starts to disappear.
There are so many twists and turns in this book that you just don’t know who or what to believe. It was nonstopy all the way through. I really enjoyed reading this. It was very well written.
Another great thriller by Kiersten Modglin! This is the second book of hers I’ve read, and I’m sure there will be more in the future that I’ll be checking out. I really like her style of writing, and the way she makes everyone a potential suspect in a mystery.
This is the story of Ginny, Cameron, and their toddler, Skylar. The day after Skylar’s third birthday party, her parents wake up to find her gone. She’s not hiding, not playing, she’s just vanished without a trace.
As they usually are, the police are suspicious of the parents, and how the house had no broken doors or windows. If someone kidnapped her, how did they get inside? How did her parents not hear anything? They had been drinking the night before, but surely they weren’t that far gone? Ginny had severe post-partum depression with Skylar, and has recently stopped her meds - not something that looks good in the big picture. The parents feel helpless as all eyes are on them.
The book really does make you wonder who did the crime, and why. I had some suspicions, and I was right, but it was a bigger twist than I was anticipating so I didn’t mind that I’d figured out part of it. The story was original, hard to put down, and had a great ending. I’d definitely recommend it and I’m giving it a solid four stars.
(Thank you to Bookouture, Kiersten Modglin and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.)
Thankyou Netgalley for the advanced copy of Missing Daughter by Kiersten Modglin.
I’ve heard such amazing things about this author, I was over the moon to wake up to find I was approved for her newest book. She truly is an amazing writer and I will definitely look into the rest of her work!
Ginny and Cameron are the parents of 3-year-old Skylar. They cherish their daughter but the challenges of parenthood can be rough!
Ginny had a difficult pregnancy and delivery. She struggles with her role as a new mom. She constantly sees herself as she feels her mother must see her and judges herself against a “good mother”. She is a perfectionist who worries over losing the pregnancy pounds and keeping her house in perfect order. She can’t even relax to play with Skylar without stopping to straighten things up. She sees a therapist, not only to help her work through her issues, but to help her bond with Skylar. Ginny is jealous of Cam’s relationship with Skylar and often wonders how her child can bond so easily with him when she was the one who carried Skylar in her womb for 9 months and struggled to bring her into the world.
Cameron seeks to support his wife. He willingly plays with Skylar, watches her, and assists in her care. Cameron worries over the amount of time Ginny sleeps. He monitors her activities and friendships- all because he is concerned for Skylar. “Skylar must always come first”, he thinks.
On the day of Skyler’s third birthday party the house is full of family and friends, but that night Skylar disappears from her crib. All the doors and windows of the house are locked! Can Ginny and Cam work together to find Skylar or will their blame for each other prevent them from seeing the truth?
This story is told in alternating viewpoints and goes back in time so the reader can begin to understand the secrets and motives of everyone involved. The chapters are short and easy to follow and the action moves quickly to the conclusion.
My thoughts: I really enjoyed this book. The storyline was interesting and kept me engaged. I was able to gradually predict the conclusion and it was all tied together nicely.
My thanks to the publishers at Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Here one minute, gone the next. How much can you really trust the people around you? Missing Daughter will take you down a road full of twists and turns. Where is Skyler? How far will Cameron and Ginny go to find her?
3.5 stars
I always love books with a mental health aspect. I've never had postpartum depression, but I have struggled with clinical depression for my entire life.
Anyway! Kiersten Modglin books always surprise me, and oddly - this one didn't. It was entertaining, yet a little bit predictable. There were a few things I didn't expect of course, but the main one, totally guessed it right. But then I thought to myself, KMod is so used to surprising people, maybe the surprise this time was that you aren't surprised?! Gaaassssppppp!!!!
I'm also a stickler for accuracy, so hopefully this gets fixed before the final release: Psychologists can't prescribe medication. Only psychiatrists can.
Just like all of Kiersten Modglin’s books I really enjoyed this one. It did feel a little long and drawn out but I understand why. It definitely helped build the suspense. This book read like a lifetime movie and I enjoyed that so much. I’ll continue reading everything Kiersten Modglin publishes.
The book begins with a very sentimental premise, a mother struggling to connect with her child following her postpartum depression.
As a fan of psychological drama, I immediately got hooked onto this book from the beginning. The mystery soon unravels when her daughter goes missing and she is the prime suspect.
I love the way the author deals with emotions, psychology, and a relationship despite all flaws. The books has generously covered the topic of motherly love, or the lack thereof.
The mystery though started off suspenseful was very easy to predict. The end was definitely chilling. Loved it!
I have been hearing a lot of hype surrounding Kiersten Modglin's books, but had not had the opportunity to read one before now. I knew she wrote many domestic and psychological thrillers (one of my favorite genres) however most of her books don't seem readily available at libraries, etc. I was ecstatic to see this title available for review, and jumped at the chance to dive in to Kiersten's world.
Ginny is a mom of a young girl, Skylar. Ginny is married to Cameron (Cam) who absolutely loves and dotes on 3 year old Skylar. Ginny, on the other hand, feels like she has a difficult time connecting to her daughter. She suffered a horrible birth, and subsequent Post Partum Depression that was never fully addressed. She feels like she's a bad mom, and misses her life with her husband BEFORE Skylar came along. On the evening of Skylar's third birthday, after Ginny and Cameron had a little much to drink, they wake up to find Skylar vanished. Cameron immediately wonders, in his desperation, if Ginny had something to do with the disappearance (due to her history of apathy toward Skylar and an incident that occurred before, where Ginny fell asleep while caring for Skylar.) The tale that unravels is one of suspense and second guesses, that will keep you on your toes until the very last page.
Now… my opinions… I was definitely excited for this book, and generally, it did not disappoint. It had some very unpredictable twists, and others that I saw coming from a distance. The predictability of some of the plot lines was one of the reasons that I downgraded my ratings a tad. The character of Ginny was typically believable and relatable. As parents, we ALL sometimes day dream of life pre-kids. When we had more time to do things or didn't have as many responsibilities. Ginny just took things to the next level, which I can definitely see as (mostly) realistic due to her anxiety and post partum depression. She definitely had a difficult go at motherhood, and it really magnified everything that she was feeling. She felt like she was broken, but really she was one of the stronger characters that were written in this book. I didn't love her husband, Cameron, although I don't want to spoil it and tell you why. You'll just have to read for yourself. Although he was a well written character, I thought he got off too easily for some of the things he did…
Overall, I think my foray into Kiersten Modglin's books was good, and I would definitely give another one a shot too. I downgraded my score a little due to some predictability in the plot, and seeing some of the twists a mile away. I'd definitely recommend this to someone who loves domestic thrillers, and who can overlook some predictability in exchange for an entertaining story.
