(note: a portion or the entirety of this review may or may not eventually be posted on my blog. Disclaimer: I have no idea what netgalley's policy is on cursing, so I'm erring on the side of caution and doing some light, but obvious censoring.)

Issues that have no effect on rating:
It took me way too long that the million (exaggerated, I don't have the text, so I'm not going to go back and count) "Check This Sh*t Out" was supposed to hark back to Bill Nye the Science Guy segment "Consider the Following", but utilizing the title from the one "Check it Out". This probably would have been more clear in a visual book.

This could just be a weird cut of the audiobook, but what I received through netgalley was all over the place. For starters, the chapter titles were not on the correct chapters. (ie: The Introduction is labeled "Chapter 15". The Open is labeled "Chapter 12".) It wasn't that big of a deal because I don't chapter jump in audiobooks, but it was weird. There was no pattern that I noticed either.

Dislikes: I did not like the narrator. The downside to audiobooks is if you don't like the narrator, you're, well, f*cked.

The cursing was overboard. The title drew me in, but there's a difference between peppering it in to give flavor, giving it that extra oomph to drive home a point and dumping half a container of salt into the stew. This one does the latter more often than the former. I'm in my mid-30s, perfectly at home with it and I was just eye rolling half the time.

I feel like there wasn't a concrete target audience so some of the phrases were just all over the place. At times it seemed like it was supposed to appeal to middle schoolers, at others, early 20s, and still others - maybe just anyone.

Likes: The information was presented in a fairly easy to understand manner. I've actually taken some classes that deal with astronomy over the past two years (college level geology, biology, and geography ALL cover this - though not as in depth), so most of the information wasn't new, but it was a hell of a lot easier to understand than what I've had to decipher. There is no doubt that she knows what she's talking about and, unlike a lot of upper academia, she's knows how to "dumb it down" for the rest of us. (We need more people like this!!)

The Bill Nye interview was worth the listen alone. I really trudged through to get to it and I'm glad I did. I actually liked the author's voice better than narrator's. (I do wonder if she had narrated the book herself, if the phrases and cursing would have sounded more natural.) The conversation between the two of them was great, I would have loved it if it was longer (and if that was the whole book. tbh). There's cursing in the conversation, but much less of it and the way it's done actually enhanced what was being said.

In all honesty, I feel like this book would be better served as a podcast vs a book. (There's no need for "segments" in chapters with a book this short, but it would make sense if the information was already in bite sized chunks intended to be listened to separately.)

I really enjoy science and space, and this audio/book was a fun way to learn about it! It definitely won’t be for everyone, and I’m sure most can tell by the title, that this book has bad language in it. But that wasn’t a problem for me at all.

The audio was good and the narrator brought a lot of energy to the book. Sometimes it verged on a little too much, but overall I really enjoyed listening to Space is Cool as F*ck!

Space Is Cool as F*ck is cute, clever and educational on some of the big (really big!) questions and information about the universe - I just don't think I am the target audience. The book gives short and quick explanations of a variety of interesting topics, in a way that the 'lay person' can understand. I certainly learned a lot, and enjoyed the narration.

However, in its attempt to follow in the footsteps of "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" with the scattered obscenities and conversational tone, it loses much of the majesty and gravitas inherent to the topic of the universe as a whole. This isn't a criticism of the concept - this is a good way to engage a very particular demographic: people under 25ish looking to get a background on the topic, and who are still excited to hear people use swear words because they don't get to hear or use them often, especially in "professional" contexts. If that novelty has worn off for you, as it has for me in my late 20s, it just becomes a bit tedious.

Overall, this is a great introductory book that will certainly get college age individuals interested in science excited on the topic of space. I'd recommend it as a gift for that demographic!

I really enjoyed the content of this audiobook and it was fairly accessible for me (somebody who has minimal knowledge about space).
The narrator is not for me. As a Brit, the accent/voice really rubs me up the wrong way. It can be difficult to absorb what is actually being said because the voice is almost like nails-down-the-chalkboard for me.

Absolutely loved the Bill Nye parts - I could have listened to Bill and Kate’s discussions for hours.

great listen! was so much fun, i don’t know how else to review this; it’s a tough one! it’s a casual relay of some cool facts about space, nothing special though, except it’s really accessible and has a ton load of profanities but i’m not surprised given the title. i had nothing against that by the way! it’s just that that seemed like one of the notable personalities of this audiobook.

thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the e-arc!

The title had me excited and then I started listening. The premise is exciting, a primer on space. The print version of the book sounds exciting, unfortunately, referencing images in the audiobook was not as helpful.

The overuse of swear words brought enjoyment levels down further. The occasional f Bomb for emphasis, not a bad idea but in this book it felt like the author was trying too hard to be cool.

This could have been a great listen for a family, instead, it became a chore as I focused on my goal of completing the book.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for providing a review copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Imagine you have a friend who's an astrophysicist. They're usually pretty reserved, spending their days compiling data and theorizing about space, but when you get them drunk -- whoooo, they really get excited! Their sailor-mouthed enthusiasm is so infectious that you can't help but agree that, yeah, space is most definitely cool as fuck! That's this book.

I learned a lot, got excited about space, loved the narration, and yep, had a good laugh. Space? Making you laugh? Oh yes. A lot of the info is rehash for someone who's been to high school, but much of it makes you oscillate between, "Huh, I didn't know that" and "Are you kidding me?? That's so cool!!"

Heads up: only the title is censored, so make sure sensitive ears aren't listening to this exuberant, educational audiobook.

Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing a copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

Space is Cool as Fuck explains space, the suspected origins of the universe and various objects in our solar system, potential future space explorations, and more in a language accessible for those who aren’t scientists. As you might guess from the title, the book also includes lots of cussing. The book also includes an interview with Bill Nye.

This book definitely makes learning about space fun. I enjoyed getting to hear the actual interview between the author and Bill Nye in the audiobook version of the book. The trade-off is that it is disappointing to miss out on the 100 pictures/illustrations contained in the printed copy of the book. I didn’t realize until coming to leave this review that there were pictures in the book, so I immediate tracked down a copy of the regular book so I could see the pictures. Some were breathtaking; some were geometrical, and some, I’m not sure what I was looking at. They certainly add another dimension to the book that you miss out on by listening to the audio version.

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.

This was a really cool audiobook! The writer was very down to earth and seemed young. What can be a large topic with a lot of big words was made into a fun and hip book all about space! The material was made interesting, chapters were short and sweet and we even got a guest appearance from Bill Nye! The narrator was fun, actually sounded like similar to Adam Rippon. This is a great book for people to learn about space that don’t know much more than what we learned in school!

Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for an advanced listening copy of this audiobook.

I have always loved science, but biology is my jam. My husband, a Space Camp alum, is the space buff in our house. I grabbed this book in hopes that it would help me care more about the mind-blowingly vast universe that surrounds us. It was a success! It was very interesting and the swearing definitely added to the listening experience. The middle was a little slow, but then Bill Nye entered my earbuds and I was pulled back in. I especially enjoyed hearing his predictions about the future of space research. (Side note: Hearing Bill Nye swear is f*cking awesome!) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’m a big enthusiast and lover of anything related to space, astronomy, astro-physics, etc. And I have to say that Space Is Cool as F*ck by Kate Howells as just… a blast!

I loved how much you can learn from this in an extremely fun and hilarious way!

Doesn’t matter if you’re someone with profound knowledge or just a person with an interest in looking up at the stars, this will teach you so much in a simple, easy and laughable way.

And don’t even get me started about the interview with Bill Nye, because that had me laughing and crying hysterically! It was amazing and fun.

I listened to this on audiobook along with the book, which I recommend doing because the audiobook references a lot of fantastic photos and images that you don’t get to fully understand if you’re simply listening to the audio format.

It was a fun learning experience and I definitely recommend this to everyone.

Obviously have to point out the use of some… well, cursing language (as the title suggests), though it’s used in a lighthearted way and I didn’t find it offensive. You might want to be a bit more reserved with younger audiences, but it’s a perfectly safe and good book.

"Daydreaming, day breathing
Keep thinking it's you
Daydreaming, you're feeling it too
Daydreaming, you're making
The sins of my truth
Daydreaming, you're feeling it too" = Daydreaming by RKCB

When I think of space I like to close my eyes and disappear. This book made me cackle out loud. In multiple public spaces. It gave my mind a minute to take a break from the nonsense of everyday life. It was quirky and funny and there was soo much cursing. I don't want to quote it because I don't want to get flagged. As a quiet space/ science freak this was perfect. I didn't learn much but I always love a pop culture spin on things I have learned over the years. My only complaint is I wish it was longer. I have already gifted the book to my friend and once she receives her copy in the mail I am sure she will love it too. Happy reading everyone. XOXO

Special thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the advanced audio copy.

This book was strange but kind of awesome. I listened to the audiobook, which I don't think was as interesting as the physical version because I wasn't able to see all the artwork. It was cool to listen to the interview with Bill Nye (the Science Guy).

It gives a well-paced overview of space stuff, simplifies really complex theories, and gets readers excited to learn more. There are a lot of swear words, which I think are meant to make a book about pretty heavy scientific topics seem more casual. There were also some fun anecdotes that usually don't make it into more highbrow articles/books about space.

The only issue I can see with this book is the incredibly narrow audience. I think this would make a cool coffee table book for someone in their 20s or 30s (as long as they don't have kids who can read), or someone who is older and has an interest in space but hasn't done much reading up on it and doesn't have a sciency background. So with that in mind, take the negative reviews with a grain of salt - if you fit into the slim target audience of this book, you'll love it!

Space is Cool as F*ck had me interested from the title alone. I love science and this was a great collection of anecdotes, interesting facts, and a very special interview with Bill Nye. Kate Howells manages to cover a myriad of topics: the Big Bang, black holes, what life on other planets would be like, and more. My favorite thing about this audiobook was how it reminds us to look up at the stars. In a fast-paced world that at times can seem all too material, it’s important to remember the majesty and mysteries of space. The audiobook narrator was engaging and cheerful. I would highly recommend this book for all space enthusiasts and for when you need to be reminded just how cool space is. Space is Cool as F*ck is available now. Thank you so much to Kate Howells, Andrews McMeel Audio, and Netgalley for a free audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Looking to seem like you know a lot about something when you really don't? Or perhaps you want to impress a date with some random facts make you seem like you know things? Then this is a book for you.
This is definitely not a book for children and i would say the age for this book will depend on each readers or listeners comfort level with swearing and curse words as there are quite a bit in this book.
The topics and chapters of this book often seem to end and circle around to each other in ways that can be confusing to the listener but every bit of information that is given in this book is fascinating.
Definitely a favorite part of the book for me and probably for most readers is going to be the interview with the narrator and Bill Nye where they talked about several topics including aliens, UFO's, the idea that reality is a simulation and even climate change. Bill Ney is a fantastic person and it really shows in this interview as he treats every idea and question carefully and with thought.
It would be remiss to talk about this audiobook and not mention the narrator as she really made this audiobook. You can tell just how much she loves space and everything that she talks about. Her excitement and joy is contagious when you listen to her.

5/5 Funny and Informative!

This is a review of the audiobook version of this book.

First off, This is not going to be for everyone. I think it's pretty obvious but some of the reviews say otherwise. F*ck is part of the book title so you can kind of assume there's going to be a lot of cussing in the book. Now that that's out of the way, I loved this! I really loved the interview with Bill Nye and the narrator was very entertaining all the way through this book as well! I usually don't like lots of cussing for comedy purposes (or really cussing in general because I have the brain of a five-year-old and still say heck and frick lol) but this wasn't too cringey and I actually enjoyed the comedy it brought. I don't think I would like the physical copy near as much but I will probably add it to my collection at one point because of how much I enjoyed this.

I recommend this to anyone who likes space even just a little bit! Space kinda freaks me out sometimes but this book didn't make me uncomfortable at all and it reminded me of how much I used to love science (that will change once I start my first science class next term). This wasn't a long book at all and it didn't sound weird sped up so for fast-paced lovers out there this is a quick 2-3 hour listen for you. I think middle-adult readers are probably going to enjoy this the most but you never know with books. <3

An entertaining short audiobook with interesting tidbits about space. My favorite section was the extended interview with Bill Nye. At some points, the narrator spoke a little too fast for me to digest some of the larger concepts.

A fun and entertaining introduction to space: our galaxy and beyond. From the Big Band, to black holes, to the Sun, to what is beyond our galaxy and the different theories regarding our universe. I learned a few things and I particularly enjoyed the interview part.

Despite the fact that I am have a potty mouth, I found that the frequent usage of the F* word got old real quick.

Thank you very much to the publisher and Net Galley for a copy of this audio ARC in exchange of my honest review.

“Space is Cool as F*ck” by Kate Howells a delightful dip into the vast diversity of all things space. This book is written to be enjoyable for everyone, from space newb to space nerd. It is often schtick to use a profanity word in the title to shock and grab readers, and then to insert swearing with such enthusiasm that the words begin to lose all meaning. Thankfully, this is *not* that case! Yes, the F dash dash dash makes a regular cameo, but I did not find it overabused or too distracting.
So why is this book worth your time? The ubiquitous influence of Space is everywhere today: pop culture, geopolitics, global commerce, commercial businesses, academia… name a component of modern earthbound life and we can draw a direct tie to space. This book explores the various theories of the start of our universe, the expansiveness of space, and what the inevitable end(s) may be. It also takes on black holes (gravity whores), UFOs and aliens, interstellar travel, as well as antimatter, dark matter, and dark energy. Each topic presented in a hilarious and digestible narrative that makes it easy to understand and contemplate - no PhD in Astrophysics required!
Lastly, I read this one via the audiobook which includes an interview with Bill Nye, podcast style. Arguably, this was my favorite part of the audiobook! His take on conspiracy theories about whether we are living in a simulation and whether or not we have UFOs and aliens visiting earth gave me true giggle fits.
I rated this audiobook 4/5, as a strong primer about space for non-space people.
