Angel used to be a bad girl but now she's a law abiding PI. In this adventure she is on the run from various low lifes. She is just trying to return a kidnapped cap. I thought this book was delightfully intriguing and clever. The characters are well developed and the twists and turns are phenomenal. I would recommend this book.
Angel finds herself on the run after she witnessed the murder of her boss. Hot on Angel's tail is the leader of a well-known crime organization, her violent ex-boyfriend, and the woman whose identity she "borrowed" in order to escape. Along the way she picks up Sidney, an actor-wanna-be who is reluctantly headed to the British Embassy job his father had arranged for him. Sidney saves Angel and convinces her to let him help her clear her name.
This cozy mystery is all action from page one. As soon as you think Angel will catch a break, she is faced with another situation that usually involved a corpse. I've already pre-ordered the 2nd book in this series and will be checking out Zara Keane's other series.
This was a fun, super fast-paced story that had so much going on, it was hard not to want to keep reading. The characters were quirky and likeable and I enjoyed getting to know them, including the secondary characters. There was humor and tension, drama and adventure; just so much going on that you would think it would be hard to keep up. Fortunately, the author recapped enough that you could follow the long, twisty plot line and follow the story. I liked this one enough to continue with the series.
My entire reaction/rating for this book is based on how well the book delivers on the ambience promised by the book cover and the blurb. The mystery part of the narrative was not as engaging, but I liked my overall reading experience. I ended up reading the whole book in a couple of short sittings.
The story begins with a fast-talking woman in danger. The story plunges into action without taking much of a breath. Angel is on the run, and she lands up on a train with an overly sympathetic chatterbox on the seat next to hers. The adventure that follows includes car chases, a body or two and people wanting other people dead. It is a sort of madcap escapade with a semi-serious foundation.
It requires a stretch to the imagination about the events and how they all tie up together, but that is to be expected given the kind of plotline(s) that we were told to expect.
Angel is running to a possible safe place, having burned her bridges (or so she assumes). She doesn't want a partner in her escape, but she is stuck with him. Then she runs into someone she never expected, and more secrets are revealed, at least the fact that she does not know a lot of things comes to light if not much else.
I am usually wary of lighter voices in books where characters lives are in danger, but there is a decent balance between maintaining the seriousness of their situation with the comedic exasperation of the lady in question as she struggles to stay alive. Given the feel of the people in and the style of the narrative, I will be picking up the next if I get the chance.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
Angel witnessed a murder, now she tries to escape from an ex-boyfriend who is a hired killer!
"My transformation from Goth chick to pregnant Barbie wasn’t voluntary.
I hadn’t planned on shooting a London crime lord in the arse.
I had to board the train to Paris. If I stayed in London, I was as good as dead."
Sidney is much more like to spend his last weekend of freedom with a runaway girl from an attacker with a knife instead of his boring job. They meet on the get-away train.
"If we’re now partners in crime, I deserve to know.
We’re not partners in anything, Sidney. We’re temporary traveling companions.
Temporary traveling companions in a stolen car and on our way to deliver ransom money."
One criminal group following her is not enough, she stole a very suspicious id card from a lady with a suitcase with lots of money and seems the lady is from another criminal group and wants to save someone's life.
A very precious life! Césaire! Someone is going to pay one hundred thousand euros for a cat. They are in big trouble if the Césaire owner comes after them.
"Anyone who’d kidnap a cat is a terrible human being. I wouldn’t put anything past them."
If you think that escaping for saving lives, protecting a cat, and getting away from kidnappers is not enough, they find a dead Russian man in their stolen car. Also, add Angel's mother, a former pornstar who shows up with suspicious activity and acquaintance. IT IS A MESS!
The first book of a start for a fun cozy mystery! I enjoyed the story, Angel and Sidney's friendship, and as they were hired for a new mission I very like to read more about them.
Thanks to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and NetGalley for giving me a chance to read Knifed in Nice (Travel P.I., Book 1) by Zara Keane, I have given my honest review.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle by Beaverstone Press and #NetGalley for my honest opinion. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Fast paced, dark humor, suspenseful.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Beaverton Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the first in a new series. The main characters are wild. I found this mildly horrifying (her nonchalance at stealing), humorous, and fun. I liked Angel and Sydney. Angel just could not catch a break. Sydney just wants to avoid starting his boring job at the Embassy (rough life). Overall a fun, fast paced, highly unbelievable read. 3.5 stars I would definitely read the next in the series.
Dark humor, running, and lots of mystery. Overall this was a fun adventure full of surprises.
Meet Angel Doyle, a semi-reformed thief and accidental P.I.
During an unfortunate incident at her first legit job in years, Angel fires a ketamine dart into one of London’s most notorious gangsters. Now she’s in disguise and on the run. With a bunch of thugs on her tail, she embarks on a mad chase across France, determined to stay one step ahead of the villains.
At least, that was the plan.

Angel has had a bad, bad day and it just keeps getting worse. Fortunately, she at least doesn't have to go through it all alone when Sidney Foggington-Smythe befriends her on her get-away train and tags along for a whirlwind weekend adventure with a high body count of bad guys, a catnapped exotic pet, a feckless relative, and more.
Angel and Sidney are delightful and their chemistry with one another is fantastic. The book is a wild, wild ride of adventure and coincidences. I couldn't put it down. It definitely had far more dead bodies than I'm used to in a cozy mystery (and with the punny title and cover - it definitely looks like it is trying to fit itself into the cozy category). It had lots of "aha" moments and many "Oooooooohhhhh" ones as well. Loved it and I can't wait to continue on with Angel and Sidney's adventures in the next in the series.
Funny, weird and with some twists and turns that left me baffled. However, being a goody two-shoes... I don't see what's so funny about shoplifting. That said, I am wondering about a next book in this series...
Overall, I enjoyed Knifed In Nice. This read was reminiscent of a dark comedy you'd watch where everything would go wrong for the main characters. I kept flashing to Murder Mystery starring Jennifer Anniston & Adam Sandler. I also kept being reminded of the cartoon Carmen Sandiego.
The story was series of unfortunate events from the very beginning! Angel Doyle simply could not catch a break. I enjoyed the funny interactions with her companion Sidney from the start. Sidney was sweet, & such a believable character. He was responsible for a few laugh-out-loud moments I had.
The story was fast-paced & was filled with plot twist after plot twist at every turn. While I enjoyed this aspect, it often came across as very far-fetched.
Thefts, Murders, and an Exotic Animal, Oh My! Knifed in Nice follows Angel and Sidney's crazy journey across France to escape the bad guys trying to frame Angel for murder. It's fast-paced, funny, and light with some fun "who done it" and "where is it" elements. Something crazy happens to Angel in pretty much every scene, but it kept me reading. I enjoyed the story and it left me wanting more of some characters (Luc)! I kept feeling like there was a hidden depth to Sidney that I'm not sure ever fully revealed itself, but maybe in the next book in the series.
This is an excellent cozy and funny mystery, with a very intricate plot that somehow manages to be logical in the end. The story has a very fast pace, and the characters are just fantastic.
Action packed fun characters and story. A very good start to a promising series. This read will keep you turning the pages! Thanks #netgalley and #BeaverstonePress for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
James Bond meets Sherlock Holmes and Watson in this new Mystery slash adventure. You’ve got action, suspense, lots of running, lots of brains, two unlikely partners, a mysterious mama, a group of psycho thugs, and a whole cast of other characters all packed in one book. If you like what you’ve just read above, you should really think about picking it up! It’s got a little something for everybody. It's a fairly clean read, and it even has a hint of romance to come. Ms.Keane, thank you for writing such an engaging book. Looking forward to the next book in the series.[
This mad-cap adventure involves Angel Doyle, described as a “semi-reformed thief and accidental P.I.” who partners, involuntarily, with Sidney Foggington-Smythe, an energetic and hopeful actor. The twosome deal with a cat kidnapping and avoiding gangsters who are determined to locate them. Angel and Sidney also find themselves driving a stolen Mercedes containing, unknown to them, a dead body. Knifed in Nice is quite a ride with intriguing twists and unexpected options in the end. Ambushed in the Alps sounds like a fascinating sequel. Hopefully, it will contain as much fun and daring-do as this first Travel P. I. escapade.
