There was a lot going on in this book -- possibly too much, but Jane and Fen as characters and their chemistry together managed to shine through. Jenn Bennett has a gift for romance between messy characters and this was no exception. It was great to see a portrayal of aphasia where it was relevant to the plot but also so thoughtfully handled.
Another winner from Jenn Bennett - her books are always in a steady rotation of my recommendations and staff pick displays. Always Jane evokes Sabrina (a favorite of mine!) with a rock and roll edge. As always, Bennett immerses the reader in the setting and creates a cast of characters you can't help but have strong feelings for, good or bad. Jane was a fantastic main character - a teen girl going through A LOT and choosing what was best for her in the end.
I adore Jenn Bennett and everything she writes. This was no exception. I was up until 3am finishing it! Her use of imperfect characters always draws me in and I love that there are always realistic repercussions for their actions and the choices they make. I did feel like Fen was a toxic character. It was one of those cases like The Notebook where what some see as dreamy and romantic is also seen as manipulative and waay too much. Fen being completely obsessed with Jane before knowing her was a bit alarming. I did like that they called each other out on their flaws and acknowledged that it was completely unhealthy and putting her in an unfair position. I think his obsession added to how realistic the characters are and if the reader can recognize their flaws for what they are then this was another one of Bennett's excellent books.
I always enjoy Jenn Bennett's books, so I was super thrilled to read Always Jane. This one was tough for me as Jane's infatuation with Eddie was uncomfortable since it is so one-sided. Bennett can write an awkward teen for sure, and it was really tough for me to finish because of that cringey material. If you are able to stomach one-sided love, this is the book for you! Jane and Fen's relationship was cute enough to overcome the fake love triangle.
Always Jane is such a beautifully written story. It begins with a very traumatic accident Jane had one night lusting over a boy who didn’t care to give her any attention. All to be saved by his brother Fen. As much as I’d like to give more details, I won’t in the hopes that you would read this book yourself.
But I will say this, because there are good amount of people and personalities in this story, I feel like everyone can relate to at least one character. Whether it be personally or through someone they have in their life. For me it was Jane and Fen both being musically in tuned with each other. Very similar to the way my husband and I are. It’s something we bonded over and is big anchor in our relationship.
I wish there was a little more detail and background from Fen. I would have like to get to know his thoughts and feelings during and after the incident. Jenn writing about Jane is struggling with aphasia had me googling all about it. I like that she’s giving awareness to the medical condition by making that part of her story. Great job on that!
I was so excited to see Jenn Bennett’s newest novel, I couldn’t wait to read it.
First of all, thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book. While I did enjoy this one, I don't think Always Jane was as good as Jenn Bennett's other books. So while I would recommend this book to Jenn Bennett fans, it wouldn't be a first choice for someone looking for a romance novel.
I am a big fan of all of Jenn Bennett’s other books so I knew that I had to read this one. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the setting of the lake and the music festival. I liked Jane’s journey as the book went on and all of the tension between Jane and Fen. The only thing that I wasn’t the biggest fan of was Chapter 27 and 28 (going by the CD tracks). It felt like everything was wrapped up and then became unwrapped again. I understand why that happened and it did ultimately contribute to a better ending overall but I wish it wasn’t as drawn out as it was. But overall I this was a very good book and I will continue to read everything Jenn Bennett writes.
Jane is the daughter of a chauffeur who works for a famous music promoter. At the beginning of the book, she seems to think she is dating Eddie, who is the son of another music promoter. But she's not and I don't think this was very clear in the book. Not only were they not dating, but he rarely even spoke to her and didn't even bother kissing her before he left the country, although she met him at the private airfield prior to his departure. She may be infatuated with Eddie, who let her believe it, but absolutely nothing is serious between them.
Still, Jane goes through part of the book worrying about Eddie and trying to be a good girlfriend, sending text messages that he never answers. And then she falls for his brother Fen, of all people.
I was annoyed that this poor kid seemed to think that she had a relationship when it was very obvious that she did not. Also that she stressed about the "love triangle" which was essentially nonexistent.
The love story between Jane and Fen is cute though. It is what saves this book.
Jenn Bennett did it again and captured me from the start with this great story. I should be cursing her because I stayed up way past my bedtime because I couldn't put this book down. Jane and Fen were amazing characters who I fell in love with from the first chapter. I can't wait to read her next book because I know that's going to be fantastic also.
This book was so good!! I really loved the main characters and the plot of this story. I flew through this book in one day. This is the type of book I would read again and again. Highly recommend!
