Join me on an enchanting adventure with James and the delightful feline companion, Ghost, in a story that beautifully unfolds the magic of literacy, friendship, and the unconditional love of furry companions.
As James grapples with the challenges of reading, the narrative takes a heartwarming turn when he discovers solace and friendship at the cat rescue shelter. Dianna Wilson-Sirkovsky crafts a tale that not only resonates with the struggles of literacy but also celebrates the transformative power of compassion.
The illustrations vividly capture the emotions, adding depth to the characters and making every page a visual delight. James' journey becomes a journey of the heart, reminding young readers that kindness and perseverance bring unexpected joys.
"James' Reading Rescue" goes beyond a simple tale of literacy; it's a celebration of the unique bond between humans and their furry friends. Ghost, the endearing cat in the box, becomes a symbol of the joy that comes from connecting with a pet.
This heartwarming tale is a must-read for young audiences aged 6 and up, offering not only a delightful literary experience but also valuable lessons in empathy, understanding, and the joy that blossoms when we open our hearts to the furry companions that enrich our lives.
This is a really cute picture book about a boy struggling to learn to read and a cat he wants to befriend. I would recommend for the little ones!
My 6 year old loved this book. We read it over and over and over. Perhaps it was the shared love of reading or the cute illustrations. Regardless, this one was a winner in our house.
This is the most endearing story about a little boy named James who loves to visit a local animal shelter. Because he is struggling with reading, he begins to start reading to the cats. There is one particular cat named "Ghost" who is very shy and doesn't want to come out of his box to interact. Over time, James improves in his reading and Ghost warms up to James.
I plan on getting this for my twins in first grade who struggle with reading, but they also love cats!
Um. I don't expect this from children's books but I CRIED when I read this. It is a super simple and super sweet story about my two favourite things in the world - books and cats. And there's a twist at the end that just got to me and made me shed a tear. I would buy this for the illustrations alone but also to read aloud (HA!). Would make a great gift for a child just learning to read - very relatable.
What an adorable book that teaches a lesson to kids about loving an animal that most people wouldn't give a second glance.
We enjoyed James' Reading Rescue and it was one that my grandkids have asked me to read to them more than once. James struggles with reading and often misses recess so he can practise at school. On the way home from school, he stops at the Rescue Center and visits a cat he calls Ghost. Ghost does not socialize with other cats and shies away from humans. He sits down and reads out loud to Ghost and notices that he is listening. He still won't come out of his box, so James goes to the library and gets different books that are more exciting. He reads everyday to the cats and begins to enjoy it. He reads in voices and expression until, one day, Ghost comes out of his box and finally lets James pet him. Of course there is a happy ending for both James and Ghost. This is a great story. It promotes reading, especially aloud and to others, as well as animal rescue and kindness to animals. The illustrations are wonderful and I love how they show emotion and expression. I know a book is a hit when they ask to hear it more than once.
What a cute and heartwarming book! I'm pleasantly surprise how much I adore the stories and the soft illustration. From the James story, children can learn about perseverance and kindness. Absolutely loved it. Thank U Net Galley and Clavis Publishing for the ARC.
I read this with my grandson, a 5 year old. His name is also James and he is also learning to read, so he really related to the story. How encouraging for early readers, whether they are struggling or not. I visualize many children sitting down and reading to their dogs and cats after immersing themselves in this book. Not only is it a great story, but the pictures produce real emotion for animal lovers. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the free ARC in the form of an ebook in exchange for an honest review.
A sweet story about a boy struggling to read aloud and the cat that keeps him company. The illustrations are soft and lovely.
A determined little boy with a generous heart combines his love of cats with his need to improve his reading. The results: a dedicated reader and a devoted, loving cat! Very precious tale.
👦Cute, positive, lovely ending🐈
Really inviting illustrations and a positive message. Young, reading-challenged James and the cats at the local animal rescue all benefit from James' regular visits to the shelter to entertain the cats. Here's a young boy who learns that perseverance pays off, improving his reading skills and self-confidence, and getting a frightened shelter cat to come out and socialize. And James' biggest pay-off is a lovely surprise gift for all his hard work.
The format of the advanced e-copy confused me a bit because the final picture page seems to start the story all over again. Hopefully the synopsis at the end is clearly separated from the picture book story in the published book.
Thanks to Clavis and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
This book has such a cute story and premise. I love how the kid reads to animals. I suggest that to my students all the time. I think that it would be agood introductory book.
Sometimes our struggles turn into something good. James struggles with reading and to help himself and others, he gives his time at the local pet shelter and reads to a cat named Ghost. Reading to Ghost makes all the difference in the world for James. James finds purpose and perseverance. A great lesson to teach the children we love.
It is very easy to like James and Ghost and the relationship they develop.
A special thank you to Clavis Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
James' Reading Rescue is a sweet story about a little boy who struggles to read. He finds comfort reading to the shy kitten for sale and through persistence and practice improves his reading skills. One day, James is saddened to discover the little cat has found a home. Upon arriving home, though, he is greeted by his faithful encourager.
I love the lessons of persistence and friendship that author Dianna Wilson-Sirkovsky shares in this precious story. However, as a reading therapist who works with children who have dyslexia, I'm concerned that some readers and their families may conclude that hard work always results in the goal being met.
This book, though, is certain to encourage children and is a perfect addition to library shelves where animals are invited to "read" with young students.
Super adorable book about friendship and the struggles kids can face in school. I love that Ghost is a black cat as well and removes the stigma of black cats. Cute short read for your kiddos.
Hurray! A book that marries two of my favourite things: animals and reading! So right away this heartwarming book was a winner for me.
I love that a little boy, named James, who is struggling with decoding and understanding words in a book takes it upon himself to work hard, practise reading aloud daily, and conquers his feelings of inadequacy and shame. Each day after school he stops off at the local cat rescue shelter and his reading buddy becomes a cat named Ghost. Ghost initially hides at the bottom of his box and hisses at James. James perseveres and returns again and again to read and hopefully bond with Ghost.
One day James returns to the shelter to grace Ghost with a personalized storytime and discovers that Ghost is gone. Where, oh where, could his favourite cat be? A lovely surprise awaits the reader at the end of the book as James discovers that kindness and perseverance can reap glorious unexpected rewards. I love how James' parents were so in tune with his much improved reading journey. How lucky for their son and how special is that?
The illustrations are wonderful and James ( and Ghost ) are adorable characters that kids will fall in love with. This book lends itself to a perfect read aloud as the language is simple and the message is powerful... kindness, selflessness and never giving up really do pay off! This book would be an asset not only to parents but in classrooms, school libraries, and especially to kids. I highly recommend it! Kudos to "James' Reading Rescue" wrapped in hugs!
I received this book for free for an honest review from netgalley #netgalley
Such great morals for reading and keeping up with your studies. my boys loved it
James' Reading Rescue is a motivational story about a little boy who struggles to read out loud and his budding friendship with a reluctant cat. I read this story with my 9 and 5 year old daughters and both loved the story and illustrations. It would be a good story for any kid who has struggled to read and who loves cats.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion.
This book was just adorable. I love that he is sad so he goes to a shelter to play with the cats. There really isn't anything bad I could say about this book. The illustrations were great, the story was incredibly cute, and together they just created one of those feel good books.
