I loved this. A black cat who only likes the most exciting of stories, and James honing his reading skills on animals who are just happy to listen. Gorgeous.
James struggles at school. While reading comes easily to some, for him it’s a challenge. One day, to cheer himself up, he heads over to the animal shelter to visit the cat he’s named Ghost. Ghost is like James. He doesn’t fit in. But while James just wishes he could hide, Ghost actually does, refusing to come out of his box. So James decides to sit and read to him. After all, he does have to practice his reading! Book after book, day after day, James reads to Ghost until, finally, Ghost emerges.
James’ Reading Resuce by Dianna Wilson-Sirkovsky is a charming story of a boy who finds comfort in the animals around him, and who finds a way not just to rescue the animal, but himself as well. This story is touching and heartwarming in all the right ways, and will instill in children not only a love for reading but an understanding of the power of books and storytelling. It may even inspire them to go pick up another book when they’re done with this one!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a childrens book. I liked this story! Persistence pays off!! James has trouble reading so needs to practice. He reads out loud to a feral cat. Over time they become friends, and James becomes a more confident reader. A double win!! Nice, positive story. 4 stars
I’ve always loved programs that allow kids to read to rescue animals to improve their reading fluency and get the animals used to people. James’ reading rescue is a sweet story in which James finds reading success and helps Ghost get used to people. The illustrations are soft and pretty, which suits the tone of the story.
Such a cute little story for every book lover and/or animal lover!
James is a struggling reader. To cheer himself up and forget his troubles with reading, he visits the local rescue centre after school and plays with the cats there. However, one particular cat, whom James has named “ghost” remains adamantly aloof. James decides to start reading cat adventures to Ghost so that it might become friendlier and thus increase its chances of getting adopted. In this unselfish and kind gesture, James attains one more thing: his reading improves with every book he reads aloud to Ghost and his struggles with words have vanished.
With a single story, the book effectively addresses two issues: reading and rescued animals. The content is simple and straightforward, and James will surely win everyone’s hearts. There are so many values brought forth by the story: comfort, kindness, helpfulness, perseverance, and selflessness. The idea is easy: if you are kind to others, you too benefit. It also emphasises on how reading can help create connections.
As the story itself involves reading aloud, this would be a great book to read aloud to kids. (And for them to read aloud to their pets and stuffed animals.) The language is very easy and written in simple prose. This will be a great independent reading resource for early readers.
I loved the tidbit about the behaviour of rescued cats right at the start of the book. That helps us understand Ghost’s emotional distance better.
The illustrations are ADORABLE!!!
Heartily recommended to everyone – children, parents, teachers, schools, libraries!
My thanks to Clavis Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.
A big thank you to Net Galley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review. "James' Reading Rescue" by Dianna Wilson-Sirkovsky is a very sweet and genuine book, which would be a great read for kids who have trouble reading. The story follows James who experiences such problems and has to practice reading while his friends are at recess. He later goes to the Rescue Shelter, where he plays with the cats, well, except for Ghost, who hides away and hisses at him. He reads to the cats, which appears to help him a lot, as they do not judge him. The story, of course, has a happy ending. Overall, I found it very comforting and cute. The beautiful illustrations and the lovely story make the whole book come together. An awesome read for kids and cat lovers!
Thank you NetGalley and Clavis Publishing Inc. for a copy of "James' Reading Rescue" in exchange for my honest review.
This book is a great for animal lovers for ages 6 and up. It's an opportunity for educators and parents to help children who might be struggling with reading like James is. When his friends went out for recess, he had to stay and practice reading. He would later go to the Rescue Shelter where he visited a cat named Ghost. All Ghost did was hiss at him. He would talk to the cats about his day. He would read to the cats who never judged him for stumbling over his words. The cats came and went but Ghost was a constant. He decided he needed to read more exciting books to get Ghost to react. James got very good at reading and Ghost stopped hiding all the time. One day Ghost crept up to James and let him pet him. After all this reading to cats, James realized that he was no longer struggling and stumbling with his reading. He even started volunteering to read in class.
Kindness and perseverance will lead to unexpected rewards.
You know that my passion is books about reading and this Charming children’s book about a little boy who reads to the shelter cats. It had me in tears it was so sweet. James is struggling to learn his reading and writing, so to practice, he reads his stories to the cats at the animal shelter. One cat in particular, Ghost, a little black kitten doesn’t seem to be responding. But James perseveres and as his reading and writing improve something magical happens. This is the quintessential story to read to your child if you want to foster a love of reading. Absolutely loved it and giving this one five little stars
This was such a sweet book. James struggles with his reading and always misses recess to practice. After a particularly bad day he stops by the local animal shelter and begins reading to the kittens. One cat in particular, Ghost, stays hidden
This book offers a great message to children. James forms a bond with Ghost, a standoffish kitten who needs a little bit more time than the others, and in return he is able to relax and work through his reading struggles. His determination to coax Ghost from his hiding spot leads James to seek out books that Ghost might like and with all of the reading practice James becomes a better reader. They both get what they need from eachother. The illustrations in this book were beautiful as well.
I loved the information regarding rescue cats and feral cats at the very beginning of the book. As someone who has adopted several rescue cats I appreciated that.
With kids that love reading AND animals, this is the perfect story! Great illustrations and it prompted my kids to practice reading to their stuffed animals.
I recieved a copy of this book through netgalley in exchange for an honest review...
So I normally don't read books to my my kids from the tablet, but tonight I'm under the weather and needed a quick and fun new read for them.
I found this one and was immediately drawn in by the title and art.
The book was an absolute hit with both of my kids! I loved how simple and sweet the book was, I was able to make different sounds and be animated as I read this to them. This is definitely going to be a new favorite of ours!

Oh, my, God! I love this! James is a sweet little boy who finds his day boring and goes to a cat shelter home to play with the cats. He pets them, runs with them, and reads out stories as the cats cuddle and listen.
However, there is one cat, Ghost, with lovely black fur and emerald green eyes. It refuses to come out of the box and doesn’t let anyone touch it. James gets an idea to read aloud for the cat and see if it would be friends with him.
The process isn’t easy as James is not good at reading aloud. But he learns with practice, and one day, Ghost meows and finally peaks out of the box. The friendship thus begins.
James does great at school and aces the reading class. He goes to the shelter home to find Ghost missing. With mixed feelings, he goes home and is delighted to see that his parents have adopted Ghost for him.
The book deals with two topics- abandoned cats and reading problems kids usually face when young. James is a darling boy, full of love and patience. Abandoned/ street cats are afraid and tend to scratch, hiss, and fight if anyone gets closer. It takes a lot of time for them to trust a human.
The illustrations are so soft and warm. The one where Ghost peeks out of the box is picture-perfect. That cute head and those curious green eyes, sigh!!
Cat lovers, pick this up with a second thought.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Clavis Publishing and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A pleasantly surprising book, in that it covers two very different issues, and matches them in ideal fashion to make for a fine little read. We meet James, kept away from recess play as his reading skills are not up to scratch, only to see him in his out-of-school hours volunteering at a cat sanctuary. Knowing (or perhaps having read the introductory text here that states) cats often need acclimatisation to humans before their behaviour is suitable for adoption, he reads to the most reluctant, unwanted cat there, and lo and behold it's to the benefit of both him and the moggy. Very pleasant illustrations give us his character and that of the diverse pussies in his charge, and it's perhaps one of the more surprising pro-reading reads a school shelf might need. That and animal friendly too! A strong four stars.
I love this short picture book! Why there aren't more than five stars?
James' Reading Rescue is about rescued cats and their need to play with humans to not be afraid anymore. This book was so beautiful, cute, dreamy with lovely illustrations.
James needs to improve his reading, he stops at the rescue shelter on the way home, plays with kittens, and reads with them. One of the kittens, Ghost, the shy one, wouldn't play. He tries every way to play with Ghost, he borrows many books from the library to could be Ghost's friend.
Finally
Hello Ghost!
And also James hasn't any problem with reading anymore!
Many thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read James' Reading Rescue by Dianna Wilson-Sirkovsky and Illustrated by Sara Casilda, I have given my honest review.
The most dreamy illustrations accompany this sweet story of a boy working on his reading skills and befriending a shy cat at a shelter in the process. The story is exciting, empowering for struggling readers, and just very delightful.
I like this book which will be an excellent one for a child who struggles with reading. If that child loves cats, that will be a big bonus!
James has trouble reading. He has been told that he has to spend his recess time practicing. How, why and where James practices and what he accomplishes are the elements of this lovely picture book story. There is a nice surprise for James at the end of this gentle and positive title.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Oh this is just the cutest book. The illustrations are captivating and really draw the reader into the story. This inspiring story tells of young James who struggles with reading and how his love for the little rescue cat Ghost helps him find a reason to practise his reading. A must for any school bookshelf.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for this lovely read.
Marvelous book for children. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is very cute! I like it so much I want to reread it right now even if I just finish it!
a picture book about the power of reading and finding friends in the most unlikely of places. the story is cute, but mostly inspirational. i hope my baby cousin will read this book someday.
What a sweet story! James struggles with reading, and finds a great place to practice at the local pet shelter. One cat, Ghost, needs more help to be socialized and James's reading is just the ticket!
This is a nice tale to both highlight the good shelter reading programs can do and to de-stigmatize reading issues. The illustrations are lively and cute and will definitely hold reader interest. This will make a great circle-time read and I think young readers will definitely get invested in the story. I can't wait to try it out! This would make a great addition to preschool and elementary school. classroom, and personal libraries.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
