'Journey to the Last River' is perfect for the reader who loves adventure! Accompanying the engaging story are beautiful illustrations.
This is an amazingly beautiful book. The illustrations are so beautiful that it remains etched in my mind even after many months of reading this book. Definitely will recommend this book!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This book was such a fun book to dive into. It is beautifully illustrated with drawings that look like they were hand drawn. It is laid out exactly like a travel journal. With entries dated and handwritten. Pages with smudges, and even extras taped to the pages. All that, plus a very interesting and informative narrative of an anonymous explorer's journey into the rainforests searching for an unknown river that they discovered on a geographical society map. I can see this being a real hit with school-age kids.

Journey to the Last River is a fantastic adventure story that will inspire you to journal your own adventures while giving a first-hand account of the author/illustrator's journey into the Amazon after discovering a purposely smudged map at the Royal Geographical Society that showed an otherwise uncharted river.
The "Unknown Adventurer" teams up with a friend, Bibi, and sets off to the Brazilian savanna, where they enter the jungle on a journey to find the lost river and encounter all that the rich habitat and ecosystems have to provide.
This reads like an actual travel journal and I honestly wish more books were like this!
The author/artist included colorful illustrations and doodles around and along with the handwritten tale of their adventure, as well as actual taped-in samples of leaves, snake skins, fish scales, and even actual panned flakes of gold!
I loved seeing what they saw and learning little things about plants and creatures and more that were added in the text or as footnotes alongside their illustrations.
This was just absolutely fascinating and had me pouring over it and its beautiful illustrations as often as possible! I definitely recommend it if you enjoy first-hand accounts or nature or adventures or all of the above!
What a cool format for a book! I know that this is a book I would've been extremely interested in when I was 11 or 12. I can picture myself as a kid reading this and then wanting to start an art/travel journal of my own.
The illustrations are gorgeous and a lot of the text is really informative. I was homeschooled and this is a book I could see my mom having added to my curriculum. I teach preschool, but this book makes me wish I was teaching 6th or 7th grade to read this and assign an art journal for the kids based on the text.
I do think some of the pages did get a little bit boring compared to others, but overall, this adventure book was really cool and definitely worth my time.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing/Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a children's book. Although this is a wonderful, insightful, mysterious book of a lost area, I found the font extremely difficult to read. It is to small. Wonderful artistry and who doesn't love an unsolved mystery? 4 stars
So initially I thought this was a childrens book and I was wrong. This is more of a middle school grade level. The graphics were beautiful and watercolor but the overall story was very dense and full of information.
This book is not what I expected. I was expecting a picture book, and while it is picture book format size wise, it’s longer than a normal picture book, about 128 pages!
I think this book is amazing. It’s written as a journal during an expedition through the heart of the Amazon. So as well as journal entries, there are lots of illustrations and notes on every page. There are images that look like leaves stuck on the pages, as well as a bite out of one of them from a piranha. Not to mention the slightly disgusting drawings of the removal of a mosquito worm from under the skin!
I love the idea that this could be a real journal that had been found and now published.
For those non fiction readers, there’s a lot of information in it, presented in such an appealing way, and it’s a story that’s also full of adventure for those that want an exciting story.
My only concern is who will read it? I think it would suit any adventure loving reader of 8+…but the format will put off some readers who want to read a novel…not a picture book.
I look forward to taking it out to schools and getting feedback from the students.
Thanks you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books for the opportunity to review this title
The art is pretty, but not terribly exciting. The story had me nodding off every few pages.
Received via NetGalley.
ARC Copy...very lavish and colourful...too many words to describe the beauty of the pencil crayon (I assume) illustrations and even the setting is a real natural wonder, it did feel like another world of the fantastical kind.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for and early copy of this book. What a wonderful treat, it was!
I was blown away by the pairing of the beautiful artwork with the interesting and informative account of adventure. It felt like opening a personal journal, one that the reader had discovered themselves. It's such a feast for the eyes and mind. I would love to own this, and return to it often. I think readers of all ages will enjoy this fantastic, and exquisite book.
Journey to the Last River is a wonderful illustrated book about an adventure in the Amazon. Children interested in animals and the natural world will love this one. The story is told in journal entries and wonderful drawings. Definitely get the paper copy to appreciate the details. This would be a great gift for older elementary school aged children.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC.
