This book is different than what I typically read, but I really enjoyed it. St. Clair paints a beautiful setting with her words. Lots of suspense and romance! Definitely a page turner!
Their union is his revenge.
Isolde de Lara considers her wedding day to be her death day. To end a years-long war, she is to marry vampire king Adrian Aleksandr Vasiliev, and kill him.
But her assassination attempt is thwarted, and Adrian threatens that if Isolde tries kill him again, he will raise her as the undead. Faced with the possibility of becoming the thing she hates most, Isolde seeks other ways to defy him and survive the brutal vampire court.
Except it isn't the court she fears most—it's Adrian. Despite their undeniable chemistry, she wonders why the king—fierce, savage, merciless—chose her as consort.
The answer will shatter her world.
I did not expect to like this book as much as I did! I have not read any books by this author before and was pleasantly pleased with the story and character development. Let's just say that I added St. Clair's other books to my TBR and will (hopefully) get to them soon.
The world within this novel is really cool. Without spoiling to much, I really enjoyed how different each kingdom was and the touch of gothic atmosphere within the kingdom the main character ends up ruling. I'm a sucker for a good enemies to lover series and I like that this one just dove right in.
Not for me. I had been hoping for a fantasy book with strong romantic elements. This was decidedly a romance with mild, not-that-well-developed fantasy elements. Add in the fact that vampire romances aren't my thing anyway and it was just "okay." I do enjoy Scarlett St. Clair's writing, though, and will likely watch to see what else she publishes.
This book had everything I wanted and more in a fantasy! So many tropes like forbidden love, secrecy, plot to kill your betrothed, enemies to lovers, and so much more! I was hooked the entire time I read this, never wanting to put the book down. It was entertaining and left me wanting more by then end! The spice was great, the sense of adventure was so fun to read, and their romance / chemistry was amazing. I am an Adrian stan forever. I highly recommend this book to fantasy lovers!
Nope. Just no.
I didn’t make it past the 2nd chapter.
I do not like books, that start with a asshole love interests who’s arrogant and bullies the main character. On top of that, the leading lady Isolde speaks to this strange guy for five seconds and he touches her head and her lips. And then she runs home it’s so hot and bothered that she barely gets to her room before she has to touch herself.
And that’s only a chapter and a half into the book. That does not make me confident for the rest of the book. So nope not for me that’s where I’m gonna stop.
Overall, I quite enjoyed this book! I'm looking forward to the next in the series and where it takes the characters. I wasn't a big fan of Isolde as she didn't feel like a relatable character. Some of her dialogue and actions took more away from the story than added to it. The world building was still interesting, and I did like Adrian as a love interest. It was steamy and romantic. I have her other novels that I've purchased and am excited to read!
Like the true Twilight girlie I am, I love any good story with vampires, I especially love the trope with vampire royalty. Scarlett St. Clair did not disappoint with King of Battle and Blood. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the magic system in this book and fell in love with it through the development between Isolde and Adrian as well as their individual development.
Thank you to Netgalley for giving me a digital arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book was AMAZING. I’m not a massive fan of vampires, but this book blew me away. It was sexy, gripping, and spicy. The world was gorgeous. The characters, wonderful. This is one of my favorite books right now, and as a bookseller, I recommend it to anyone who will listen. Although it’s both fantasy and romance, I would say it’s more romance driven, and I was 100% okay with that. Definitely for an older audience, as it is explicit, but if you don’t mind spice, definitely pick this one up.
I did not like this to be honest. It was very similar to of Blood and Ash which I also didn't like. But to each their own!
I'm still conflicted with this book. Lately, I've been finding paranormal romances flat and one-dimensional, and I struggled with the world-building and plot in this book. I enjoy romances with plenty of heat, steam, and sex, so that didn't turn me off at all. However, I was missing intrigue, mystery, and originality in this book. I also was incredibly turned off by the woman-on-woman hate and "not like other girls" vibes. I find that books often fall back on this "uniqueness" of the main character to cover a lack of plot, and I don't enjoy reading books where the main character is raised above the rest of the women. I prefer strong, unique main characters with understandable flaws and unique female friendships who embrace every part of themselves rather than fitting into a trope.

Isolde is a princess in a kingdom at war with vampires. She is brave & fearless. When she finds herself in a position to save her kingdom by marrying the enemy, she takes it.
Adrian has been alive for 200 years. He’s been searching for lost love and attempting to right wrongs.
This book is familiar in a lot of ways. I understand what people are saying when they mention it’s similar to other vampire stories. However, there is a reason I live those books and it’s because I love those elements.
There are some questionable choices around descriptive words but I am not the author. It’s just a choice, it doesn’t ruin it.
Lots of interesting elements woven into the mythos.
I look forward to the next book.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
KING OF BATTLE AND BLOOD was very nearly a DNF for me. But I did keep reading, and the ending is the only reason it got a second star.
I don't like writing long negative reviews, so here's what didn't work for me:
- The main characters had ill-defined personalities with such extreme swings (from weepy maiden to hardened warrior; from doting lover to ruthless ruler) that the whiplash was uncomfortable. Without the necessary backstories, they just felt like poorly drawn caricatures.
- Speaking of backstories, these were 100% predictable very early in the story. There was no mystery.
- All of the plot seemed to have happened off page and a couple hundred years before the present action. Which begs the question: why didn't St. Clair write that story instead of this plotless wonder?
- The whole book felt like a set-up for the next one. Nothing is resolved. So again, what was the point? Had these events been condensed into a chapter of the next book, we readers would have been no worse off and probably better for it.
The action does pick up at the end of the book, and I'm a sucker for action. So KING gets an extra star from me, but I will not be reading any further in the series.
I’ve tried to start saying how I feel and everything feels inadequate and unworthy.
This story was a labour of love I can tell, and knowing everything Scarlett has been through in the passed year and more you can feel her emotions on the pages.
When Isolde was mad I was mad, when she wanted to run I wanted to run with her. When she excepted the truths I felt them. When she felt betrayed I felt it.
My favourite part do Scarlett’s writing is that I feel it. That I get lost in the story and forget where and who I am.
I can not wait to share my love of this book With every single person I encounter.
The lore is original and exciting I can’t wait to experience this world over and over again.
This book was so good. It was a lot spicier fro. The get go than I thought it would be. I really enjoyed the ending too and I’m super excited to read the next book. It was super fast paced but I feel like I still got enough in depth detail about the world and various characters background.
Sadly I didn't manage to finish reading this book in the allotted time. But I got the physical book as the beginning was absolutely to my taste.
“All the stars in the sky are not as bright as my love for you.”
What can I say, I devoured this book. Adrian and Isolde are pure perfection. Full of vampires, magic, court intrigue, epic castle settings, shifters… I could go on. This book has it all. And the romance? I read this book in five hours and was fanning myself for four and a half of those hours.
A new epic world to get lost in that will feed every Romantasy lover’s inner beast. I cannot wait for book two! If you love fantasy, forced marriages, a couple so hot they singe the pages, morally grey characters, a strong and unapologetic female lead, and timeless love stories, then I welcome you to Revekka.

A fantastic fantasy title. This is perfect for fans of Sarah J maas and Jennifer armentrout and I can't wait for the next one. We have paperback copies in store already that we are handselling with ease to readers of the genre.
King of Battle and Blood is a retelling of Tristan and Isolde. Isolde de Lara is going to be wed to the Vampire King Adrian Vasiliev to keep her kingdom safe. However, Isolde has a plan to kill Adrian and free her kingdom once and for all. When Isolde's plan fails, she is forced to accept her new situation. It's not long before she starts to change her mind about the Vampire King.
This was a fun enemies to lovers fantasy romance. Isolde was an interesting character and I enjoyed reading the book from her perspective. I am interested to see how the series will continue.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC which I received in exchange for an honest review!
As someone who had read the Touch of Darkness series by Scarlett St Clair and liked it but didn’t love it, I was slightly nervous about this book. In theory, everything about this book is exactly what I love to read; enemies to lovers, vampires, arranged marriage trope; so I hoped I would love it and I DID! Man, this book was fantastic and the spicy level was right where I wanted it to be. I loved the two main characters and the world that was created by St Clair. As a bookseller, whenever a customer asks me for a vampire book similar to From Blood and Ash, this is the book I recommend.
I found this book to be a page turning fantasy romance that i could not put down and I need to know what happens next. I went blind and it was best do it this way. This is a high heat romance.
