The Last Time She Died is a gripping crime thriller that follows Detective John Byron, who is assigned to investigate the suspicious death of a wealthy businessman. His case takes a shocking turn when a young woman shows up at the funeral, claiming to be the man's long-lost daughter, Blake. The problem is, Blake was supposed to be dead, killed by her own family in a tragic accident ten years ago.
Zoë Sharp delivers a masterful plot full of twists and turns, secrets and lies, and a mind-blowing revelation that will leave you breathless. The characters are well-developed and complex, each with their own motives and agendas. The audiobook is narrated by Tamsin Kennard, who does a superb job of bringing the story to life with her expressive voice and varied accents. She captures the emotions and personalities of the characters, as well as the suspense and tension of the scenes.
The Last Time She Died is a must-listen for fans of crime fiction, especially those who enjoy a strong female protagonist and a clever detective. It is the first book in the Blake and Byron Thrillers series, and I can't wait to hear more from this author and narrator duo.
The Last Time She Died is a delightful tale, and despite a lengthy build-up, it offers a cracking twist and a satisfying conclusion.
Thank you to Bookouture for my copy of this audiobook via Netgalley. I love a good crime thriller and I love to try new authors so when I saw this audiobook on Netgalley I had to request it. Zoë has quite a back catalogue of books and there is no doubt I will be purchasing some of these in the future.
This story was full of suspense and tension from beginning to end. Tasmin does an excellent job of narrating this story, building tension in just the right places. It was so easy to keep listening to this one.
Zoë has created some really in-depth characters with this book. I loved Detective Byron I really want to delve deeper into his past and discover all his secrets. Blake was also such a good character. She is extremely observant and smart. She could easily outwit the best of them. These two will make an excellent team.
Anyone who has read my reviews before will know I LOVE multiple POV and this book provided. I think it just helps to build the world a book is set in and help us to understand all of the characters better.
If you are looking for an action-packed crime thriller, this book is definitely for you. I can't wait to hear the next one in the series.
I listened to this on the way back across France and it made a very tedious and long journey almost enjoyable.
It's not a very intellectually challenging read which is not what you need when driving, but it was interesting and had some good twists although you could see a lot of them coming.
I liked the 2 main characters and it will be interesting to see how their story continues in what is proposed as a series.
The Last Time She Died by Zoë Sharp Narrated by: Tamsin Kennard This book is the first book in the new Blake and Byron series which was a great start to a promising thriller. I really enjoyed it. especially as it Kept me guessing until the end. This audiobook had great twists and surprises throughout and I could not stop listening to it - Glad there was nothing on the Television! I am looking forward to her next book in this series.
I highly recommend this audiobook the Narrator Tamsin Kennard was excellent and gave you a great feel for it.
Big Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for this ARC.
DNF. I tried to listen to this at two separate times and wasn’t able to get into it or overcome the accent.
The Last Time She Died is the first book in a series and I would term this more of a suspense than a thriller. I listened to the audiobook which had a running time of 10 hours and 7 minutes but I sped through it because the book maintained its pace with its short chapters culminating into a fast paced ending/climax. Tamsin Kennard narration was smooth and clear and I quite like her voice. I hoped for a different twist to the ending of the book which didn't happen but overall I liked the story and I liked the characters of Blake and Byron and it will be interesting to see how these two are brought together in the next book.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture/Bookouture Audio and the author Zoe Sharp for the audio Arc of the book.

Wow! I couldn't put this down. I really enjoyed Blake and Byron's interactions with one another. I eagerly await the next book in the series.
Synopsis:
When Byron returns to a small town for the funeral of the rich Mr Claremont, he doesn't know what he's getting himself into. Because shortly afterwards, he arrests a young woman for breaking and entering - and she claims to be Blake Claremont, the dead man's daughter who disappeared ten years ago without a trace. And some people in the community know it cannot be her - because the real Blake is dead and buried. They must know, after all ....
My thoughts:
There was a lot going on, many twists and turns, back-and-forths, so it was a bit much at times. But overall, I was absolutely gripped by the story and I couldn't wait to find out if the girl is Blake or not, and what really happened ten years ago. I don't usually enjoy procedurals, but I loved the character of Byron and I was SO thrilled, when after the credits they announced that there will be a second book about him! The narrator did a great job with all the different voices, and I really enjoyed listening to this book! Oh, and it has one of the creepiest prologues I've ever read/listened to!
This was my first book by this author.
This book had a bit of a slow start but picks up rapidly in the last quarter. The chapters themselves are short which I found distracting As the next chapter never picked up where the previous one left off. I really loved Byron’s character and all the development that went into him But I was hoping for more connection with multiple characters. Most of the twists and turns seemed fairly apparent from the beginning but I did have a few surprises. This was a good standalone but I’m not sure that it’s enough to make me want to pick up the next book in the series.
The Last Time She Died - the first in a brand-new suspense-thriller.
Blake Claremont disappeared ten years ago... What is it with being ten years later,.. something up with that mystical decade!! Obviously she is dead, they buried her. However, 'ten years later' Blake returns to the family home, which shocks everyone and brings on certain questions of her identity.
The story unfolds with multiple POV, mainly that of Blake, a detective, and Blakes step-sister. There are a few more view points within this story however, in all honesty I do not feel as though they were needed. They were like stocking stuffers. However, this book was a riveting read that I really enjoyed. Blake's arc through this book is very well developed as well.
Enjoyed!!
This is a review of the audiobook from NetGalley.
My lasting impression of this book is that it just took way too long to get to the GOOD STUFF!!!
This novel has lots of 5* reviews and perhaps reading the novel would be a different experience.
I WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SKIM IT, WHICH I SO MUCH WANTED TO DO!!
On the day of Gideon Fitzroy’s funeral, the widow gets a message that their house has been broken into. The neighbors reported seeing someone in the home and the lights on. Their family mansion, for the record, is called Claremont.
Detective John Byron meets the family, which is extensive, at Claremont and finds a young woman who claims to be Gideon’s daughter, Blake, from his first marriage – where has she been for so long??
From the blurb because it is so extensive and tells so much,
“Don’t you recognise me?” she says. “I’m Blake.”
Detective John Byron isn’t sure whether she’s telling the truth. But as he investigates, he soon realizes no one is happy to see her.
And the people who should be welcoming her back with open arms know she can’t be Blake. Because they killed her the night she vanished…
Didn’t they?”
I thought that the blurb gave away too much and spoiled a lot of the surprises for me!!!
I should also mention that there is a very large cast of characters that takes a while to come together, again I lost patience with it.
I am definitely the outlier on this one but I definitely didn’t find it to be a “mind blowing suspense thriller” also claimed by the blurb.
The writing and plotting in this book is good, I just found it to be overly wordy, somewhat repetitive and definitely a slow mover.
I can’t really recommend the audiobook. If you love this author instead I’d try the physical novel.
I received an audiobook from the publisher through NetGalley.
Brand new author for me and the first book in the Blake and Byron Thrillers series. Your probably wondering why I have never read any books by this author before! Well I have a few on my pile and I just haven’t got to them yet. So this book was the perfect place for me to start.
In this story we meet Blake who returns home after being missing for ten years she was presumed dead. So a shocker for everyone when she breaks into the family home, while they are at a funeral . With many questions that need answered. Detective John Bryon is called to to investigate, but now he has something else to solve. I found myself totally addicted to this story.
It is a brilliant opening to a new series and I really like the authors writing style. The story is complex so I am glad that I listened to it. I am a person who likes to read a book in one sitting and these days I dont have the time. Dipping in and out of an audio is so much easier than reading sometimes. I was so addicted to this book I listened to it in just a few days, bearing in mind it is just over 10 hours long!
The Last Time She Died is full of mystery and suspense and I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I would like thank Bookouture for a copy. All thoughts are my own and not biased in anyway.
The Last Time She Died is the first book in the Blake and Byron Thrillers, and I will definitely be watching for the next one. This is also the first Zoë Sharp book I have read/listened to, and I will be checking out her back list as well. The book opens with someone being buried in the woods, the rest of the book had me guessing who it was and who was responsible. On the day of the burial of wealthy Gideon Fitzroy, his daughter Blake, who disappeared ten years earlier, suddenly reappears. Gideon Fitzroy had been a sitting MP until he suddenly resigned. A few years later he dies in a single car accident with his two stepchildren in the car. Byron has been on a medical leave from the Met when his boss asks him to make sure it was an accident. So many questions. Was it really an accident? Is it really Blake? Where has she been for the last ten years? How will this affect the inheritance of Gideon's second wife, her brother and children?
This was a slow to start book, so be prepared for that and don't give up. It took a few chapters for the mystery to pull me in. The characters are very well developed and their feelings, emotions and though processes interested me very much. The relationship between Blake and Byron is interesting. Both are excellent at deception, smart, and always on alert for things out of place. Can they trust each other enough to get to the bottom of what is going on here? I was just as interested in the secondary characters as the main ones, feeling they had to be involved somehow. Virginia and her children Lily and Tom (not Gideon's children); Underhill- a corrupt cop; Roger Flint - Virginia's brother, Gideon's right hand man, and a compulsive gambler; the Hardings, with whom Blake often took refuge after the death of her mother; and the nosy pub landlady all added much to the story. As Byron and Blake dig, some major information comes to light and boy what twists there are. I never suspected where this story would lead. The audiobook was well performed by Tamsin Kennard. She does a great job with both the voices and the tension underlying the story. it definitely added to my enjoyment of the story. An enjoyable thriller that I definitely recommend.
Audio version of this book 📚- A great listen with so many twists and turns it had you dizzy !! An original storyline and the first book in the series that set the scene for the main characters personal stories to grow. Definitely looking forward to the next in the series. The narrator was great , you are able to differentiate between characters due to the accents so it didn’t get confusing as some audio books are.
I enjoyed this audiobook. It was pacy with lots of plot development and character development. I was a little confused at the beginning as you are introduced to so many different characters it was hard to work through, but the narrator did a great job of distinguishing between them. Once I got my head around that, it was easy to follow. The book has scandal, murder and mystery, which I found really interesting. Given how it ended, there is clearly going to be a book two, which is great.
3 1/2 stars for me.
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture and Zoë Sharp for an audioARC in return for an honest review.
This is the first book by Zoë Sharp that I have read and it was certainly not disappointing. Tamsin , the narrator added a quirky tone to the book. This book had likeable characters who you root for throughout the book.
This follows the story of Blake who turns up at her fathers funeral after disappearing over ten years ago - her family do not believe it is her and think it is a fraudster after the money and to expose them all.
This is a great read with plenty of twists. I highly recommend.
This was an overall enjoyable audiobook about the story of teenage Blake who went missing over 10 years ago. There were parts of this I enjoyed and others which I felt let it down a little.
The narration was fantastic and really held the story and the suspense going. It's a complex story which did keep me guessing but at times I felt there were too many POV's and the flood of twists towards the end were a little unnecessary. It kept my interest while listening but I wasn't running to pick up it.
I LOVED IT!! And I already want more.
Brilliant and exciting with the most intriguing characters. Blake & Byron are just the kind of characters you can't move on from. I'm beyond ready to know what would happen next.
Detective Superintendent John Byron was on leave for personel reasons attented the funeral of former MP Gideon Fitzroy when asked by his Commanded on a secret unofficial investigation after the suspiciously car accident and the sudden resignation from the parliament.
Blake show up at her father's funeral after ten years of disappearing but no one believe she's the real Blake.
Something happened ten years ago and there is others who were involved plus her fathed and she intended to expose them all.
And I must mention how much I loved the narrator. She done a perfect job with the novel.
