I didn’t find the pairs that consistently inspirational. Some felt like they were just fillers.
As always the activities are fantastic along with the illusions I look forward to a day I can do the activities with my little girl.
Rebel Girls Powerful Pairs is a collection of 1-page stories of mothers and their daughters who have achieved something great. These stories demonstrate an enormous range of ways that moms working with their daughters can make a difference. From performers to authors to humanitarians, to athletes setting incredible records, to women who helped change the world. It was great to read one or two of these stories each night before bed with my young daughter and then discuss each of them in more detail.
The last few pages of the book include some great discussion questions, a page to write your own story. The prompt to find your own “unicorn space” led to a lot of discussions around what brings joy AND makes a better you.
I was also impressed that each of the stories featured portraits of the mothers and daughters, each illustrated by women from all over the world.
A few of the women don’t have birthdates listed, which made me question whether there was in-depth research done on these women. One story had birthdates for the two daughters, but they didn’t align with the dates for their accompanying story which led to some confusion around whether the daughters were part of the change or if they came after.
Overall, Rebel Girls Powerful Pairs is another great conversation starter for parents and children. The stories are engaging, the illustrations colorful and eye-catching, and the discussion content at the end of the book guarantee that this book will be referenced again and again in the coming years.
*I was provided a copy of Rebel Girls Powerful Pairs to review, however, this review is my own and was not influenced by the publisher in any way.
Once again, a really interesting book in the 'Rebel Girls' collection. And different to the other ones, because this time we find mothers and daughters. I knew at least one of the women of each pair, but not that they worked with their moms/daughters, and it has been really interesting to read about their stories. I will always keep recommending these books.
I loved the mother daughter relationships portrayed in this book! The diversity of the pairs of women was beautiful and I couldn't get enough of the unique stories.
Great non fiction. Cannot wait to recommend this to my class as they will love it!! Jam packed with lots of useful and interesting information.
Thanks to Netgalley and Rebel Girls for the ARC of this!
I’ve read almost all the Rebel Girls collections and while I think they all have some phenomenal building blocks in common (focus on women, cool illustrations, easy to follow, perfect length stories), this might be my favorite one yet. I really liked seeing all the mother daughter pairs and hearing how they worked together. I especially liked that there were more people I hadn’t ever heard of, while some are hugely famous (Beyoncé and Julie Andrews, to start) some were just being amazing by being themselves in small towns. There was a nice variety of occupations, from actors and actresses, athletes, to scientists, nurses, and pilots saving injured pelicans. If you haven’t tried Rebel Girls yet, I absolutely suggest starting here!
It was my first time reading a book from collection Rebel Girls. I wish this collection would be available to us while I was growing up because it would positively determine my childhood, my aspiration, dreams and ability to achieve any goal I gave myself.
This book is focused on mother-daughter relationship starting with the one and only, Queen Bee and Blue Ivy. It continues, not only with women working in art industry like Beyonce does, but also humanitarians, scientists, travel guides, etc. The range is very wide.
One of my favourite stories was about Emmeline, Christabel and Sylvia Pankhurst who were suffragists at mid 19th century. The reason why I have chosen this story to be one of my favourite is, in all honesty, without women like them, we would not only be able to learn, but also to vote, own a property or to have the same rights as men.
A common theme for Rebel Girls books are illustrations with vivid colour scheme which I absolutely adored.
This book would be a perfect gift for Mother’s Day too as they could have read it with their daughters.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Rebel Girls for an electronic ARC in return for an honest review.
I loved this book so much! I knew most/many of the mother-daughter pairs in here, and I learned more about them. Such as Yara Shahidi, I had no idea she had paired with her mother when it came to the producing business. I had just thought that she grew up as an actor.
The last few pages include a prompt for kids to fill out about their mother, and ways to bond with her/them.
I loved this, and it shows that not everyone goes through an activity alone. They often begin, or bond throughout the activity/situation with a person who's with them forever: Their mother.
Rebel Girls tells the stories of mothers and their daughters and i'm incredibly happy that even adopted daughters were included. Just because you aren't bloodrelated doesn't mean you aren't family and the bond can be just as strong.
Thank you so much for another amazing book in the Rebel Girl series!
This is a collection of short anecdotes of pairs of women, most of them being mothers and daughters.
My most enjoyed pieces were of Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton; I look forward to reading the tales this duo spun.
The piece on Emmeline Pankhurst, Christabel Pankhurst and Sylvia Pankhurst, was the most inspiring out of the lot. The line, "we are here, not because we're lawbreakers, we are here in our efforts to become law-makers" is one of the most powerful lines I've read and will always stay in my mind.
All of these gave me a hope I did not know I needed and it would only be more powerful for young minds that need inspiration.
A refreshing, insightful collection of mini-biographies spotlighting women (mother-daughter pairs and triples) meant to inspire young female readers to find their talents, stretch their creative muscles, and challenge themselves to be their best selves. Biographies include leading ladies historic and contemporary from all walks of life and cultures. Power up your classroom/school library of Women's History month and encourage them to aspire to their own unique heights.
Thank you to netgalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to have access to an eARC for this book in return for an honest review.
I have read other books from this series and very much enjoyed this, I also liked this and thought it was good and loved learning more about powerful women, such a powerful set of books.
The Rebel Girls series offers up the life stories of women who are accomplished in many different fields. An example of an earlier title is Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Immigrant Women Who Changed the World. These are books that are designed to inspire girls and to remind them that there is no limit to what they can try and do.
This latest entry in the series looks at mother daughter pairs and this may make it a great title for adult and child to look at together. Just some of the duos featured here include Beyonce and Ivy Blue; Emmeline Pankhurst and daughters Sylvia and Christabel; Sarah and Sally Kettle; and Laurie Strand and Adriana. There are hikers, biotech people, authors, scientists and more.
There are additional suggested activities included at the end of the book. These include write your story, draw your portrait and more dun together. As an additional bonus there is also information about an app where longer stories can be heard.
The book is beautifully illustrated with art and story complementing each other. There are a number of illustrators, each of whom shares their vision.
I highly recommend this latest entry in the series. It is a fun, inspiring look at some mother-daughter pairs who represent many interests, backgrounds and ethnicities.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I am already including my future daughter and I as the mother daughter book reviewer duo in the "write your story" part towards the end of this amazing chapter book!
You can add your own!
Well, that's going to happen later. As for now, I am truly amazed at the publishing team's flawless work over the years regarding the Rebel Girls series.
This collection is just as perfect like the previous collections. What I find totally different is the first in the mother daughter duo from various fields and I would say it has variety!
The illustrations and the write-up in each chapter stands out. You will come to know about some of the most amazing people who have been excellent at what they do/did.
Thank you, Rebel Girls Inc., for the advance reading copy.
My two daughters and I are big fans of the
Rebel Girls books. So I was absolutely thrilled when I stumbled across this advanced copy on Net Galley.
What better way to read a book about inspiring mothers and their daughters than to read it with my pair.
We have read so many books like this series that I was surpirsed we only had known two of the stories. Marie Curie and Beyonce. So lots of new and interesting stories for us.
Apart from the wonderful mother and daughter stories there is also an activity section at the back and some QR codes along the way to scan to find out more about the mother and daughter you are reading about.
We look forward to adding a hard copy of this to our bookshelf.
A good collection of mother-daughter biographies. I have really liked the previous Rebel Girls books but this was not my favorite. I thought that the biographies could have been more in depth and I didn’t find a lot of them interesting. In contrast with the other books in this series, this particular collection just seems a bit underdeveloped.
Rebel Girls delivers again! I have purchased all of the previous books to read at bedtime with my daughter, and this one was another hit! The artwork was beautiful, as usual. The mother/daughter pairings were very informative.
Thank you to the publishers for allowing me to review Rebel Girls: Powerful Pairs!
This unique insight into mother and daughter bonds and inspiring ideas and actions that have changed the world was a refreshing and accessible read for all. The illustrations once again were beautiful and colourful and truly matched what each mother and daughter duo has accomplished. Some of the duos included in the collection are the Pankhurst family who campaigned for votes for women in the UK during the 20th century as well as the Curie family who now has a national charity in Marie Curie's name. I wish I had a book like this whilst growing up and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it now to present and future young readers and educators.
I love the "Rebel Girls" brand - I own a hardcopy of the first in the collection, and it is beautiful. "25 Tales of Mothers and Daughters" follows the trusted formula: two-page spreads containing a one-pager about the women (mother-and-daughter, in this case) and an illustration by a female artist. The pairs featured cover a number of countries, ethnicities, abilities, and interests.
While there have been comments that some of the pairs aren't really "heroes", that is not what the "Rebel Girls" concept is about at all! In fact, up-ending the traditionalist views of what constitutes a hero is exactly what it is about.
I especially like that these write-ups, while certainly including the pairs' accomplishments, focussed on the bond between the mothers and daughters.
The introduction acknowledges that "mother-daughter relationships come in all flavors, shapes, and sizes." While this may not be fully explored in these pages, the intricacies of gender and families are not really within the purview of this book.
This is the kind of book I would buy as a hardcopy, not only for my own daughters, but also for other mothers-and-daughters. I highly recommend it.
I really enjoy the books in this series and I love the mix of people that are featured. This book features powerful pairs that are mother and daughter.
There were quite a lot of pairs in this book that I was not aware of and that is not always the case when I read these books so that was a really nice change.
I thought that it was another great book from the Rebel Girls.
It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended!
