“The Chase” begins with an astonishing and successful scheme to break out every prisoner from the Pronghorn Correctional Facility in the Nevada Desert. 653 inmates in all were set free. Right away, some 291 were rounded up on the roads to Las Vegas, Utah, or Arizona, but the most dangerous were still at large.
Trinity Parker, a US Marshal, is spearheading the team effort to contain the damage and re-arrest the escapees. The team quickly ascertains there had to be someone inside helping orchestrate the escape plan, and was able to narrow down the culprit pretty quickly. But that didn’t help get the inmates back inside.
Celine Osbourne, who is the supervisor of death row, is determined to get her charges back, because the thought of what these dangerous men might do when back out in the world terrifies her. She is especially obsessed with recapturing John Kradle, sentenced to death for the murder of his family. Celine is focused on him because when she was 17, all the other members of her family were killed at a Christmas gathering by her grandfather. In her mind she has equated Kradle with her grandfather, and harbors a keen hatred for him.
In alternate chapters we follow what is happening with several of the escapees, including not only Kradle, but the truly frightening serial killer Homer Carrington; Abdul Hamsi, a failed terrorist; and Burke David Schmitz, a neo-Nazi white nationalist killer. Most of the men who got out are interested in stealing money and making new lives, or getting revenge, or finishing the crimes they were prevented from carrying out before they were incarcerated. But Kradle is determined to prove his innocence and find out who killed his family and why it happened. He starts calling Celine to enlist her in the effort. Celine in turn asks for the help of Walter Keeper, called Keeps, a con man who doesn’t hesitate to add Celine to his victims.
In a tension-filled denouement, we find out the truth about all of the characters, and while this particular plot line is wrapped up, readers are left hoping that those still living will be featured in future work by Fox.
Evaluation: Candice Fox excels in writing tense thrillers with nuanced characters, in which it is never clear who may or may not survive. This makes for a very entertaining read.
Unfortunately, the plot was too convoluted for me, none of the female protagonists were likable so I DNF through the middle.
Thanks for the digital review copy.
The Chase by Candice Fox
This is one of those books that you start reading and before you know it the days half gone and the book is done. Well written and has characters that you get to know, interesting storyline and twists you don't see coming. Will definitely be looking for more from this author! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this and leave my opinion.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, Macmillan- Tor/Forge and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Fast-Paced, thrilling, you won’t want to put it down.
A consummate chase story as the title would indicate. The plot would also would seem to be predictable, but that wasn’t the case as there were many twists and turns in this chase. The characters were also well developed, making for a very good read.
Fabulous story that I could not put down. Would highly recommend to fans of this genre. Great writing, and I will look for more from this author.
This was an epic Chase— no pun intended. It felt like criminal minds meets prison break but with more character depth. Highly entertaining.
The Chase by Candice Fox started out exciting and never stopped. I was unsure about the two female main characters (Celine and Trinity) as they came across as brash, but they grew on me, and I really liked them and their interactions. Though Celine made some dumb decisions, these were obviously necessary to redefine herself during the story.
There were several "Whoa, I didn't see that coming" moments. The Chase had a good storyline, good characters, and the way the author crafted the scenes kept my interest throughout and had me caring about the outcome and the characters.

I listened to the first half in audio and read the second half.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. However, it's a bit too close to A Small Town by Thomas Perry for me to have truly loved this book. While there are some big differences, this book seemed like a remake of Perry's book.
Fox's writing is easy to read and she creates such a vivid scene that has you wanting more of her words.
I was enthralled by this wonderfully descriptive, atmospheric story.
The characters are so complex and interesting, they basically jumped off the pages.
Fox is a stellar writer, just enormously talented.
Her prose, characterizations and the mesmerizing plot of this book are nothing short of hypnotic.
I couldn’t stop reading -- even when I wanted to.

Celine thinks that today will be a normal day at work. They will watch the guards and the inmates will play a game of baseball, however when the Warden gets a phone call that is broadcasted throughout the prison everyone knows today will not be a normal day. The bus carrying the guards families is stopped within sight of the prison and the driver is dead. The caller wants Grace to open the cells and release all the prisoners.
Before she can even make a decision several different guards in all the blocks start opening the cells. Celine is detained by her second in command and he opens the cells on their block. Celine knows this the worst thing ever. Their block holds the worst of the worst. When she is attacked by inmate and saved by another inmate Celine is only just starting to question everything she knows.
John Kradle is a family annihilator, and Celine hates him with a passion. But he claims he is innocent and begins contacting her while on the run. First, he saves her life, then he saves another woman's life from the serial killer who has decided that Kradle is his best friend. Soon, Celine is trying to figure out if Kradle is innocent or an evil killer.
I have to say I loved this book. Actually I have really enjoyed everything I have read by Candice Fox so far. I do have one negative about the book the side stories about the other escapees was a little distracting. It took away from the main story I think. I really liked Celine even though she had her annoying moments, but the real star of the book is John Kradle. His character shines, you are hooked and want to know what really happened and what will happen.
