One Night on the Island by Josie Silver is a rom com with some really fun characters on a very remote Irish island. Cleo needs a break from work and everything else, and she wants to get to know herself better; so she books a luxury cabin on an Irish island. But, when she arrives, another person also has reservations for the same cabin. As she gets to know her new roommate Mac, they start falling for each other. There's a problem: he's not completely over his wife. Here's where my problems start with this story. He's not divorced, so I'm not sure if he should starting a new relationship yet. Also, the ending of this story was completely unresolved. However, I really did love the various characters on the island, and the story and writing were very entertaining. Thanks to NetGalley for the free digital review copy. All opinions are my own.
This is a great book to take on vacation, as it is truly enjoyable. Cleo writes a column on dating and finding a partner, and is about to turn 30. At the suggestion of her editor, Cleo books a few weeks at a cottage in a remote island of Ireland to find the path and self love she is looking for, while at the same time, Mack books the cottage to escape a tough home situation, and work on his next photographic exhibit. While neither of them is willing to give up the cottage, especially since Mack is related to the owner, they decide to coexist together. The supporting characters in the novel add to the fun, and you will fall in love with the tight knit community. I recommend and thank Netgalley for the ARC.
DNF at 40%. For the first 39% nothing happened and there was zero spark and zero flirting between the two MC and then bam they’re attacking each other like two teens on prom night?? I need that angsty build up and flirty banter and this just did not deliver.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an E-arc. I won't be sharing my review on social media since it's a less than stellar review.
The true target for this book are women on the cusp of 30 years old, learning about & accepting themselves for the first time… a.k.a. not myself. Didn’t totally buy the initial “enemies” setup and had a tough time keeping track of all the people mentioned in the book, as well. Loved the remote Irish island location & descriptions, though — reminded me of a favorite past vacation! Thank you to #NetGalley for my copy.
I enjoy the occasional romance novel and can count on Josie Silver to write one with unique characters and an unpredictable plot. This is the third of her titles I've read and liked. Thank you to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for the review copy.
The premise: On a rustic island just off the Irish coast is a remote cabin that's perfect for someone to "get away from it all." Cleo, a British dating columnist, travels to Salvation Island to stay in the cabin, contemplate her life as a single person, and "marry herself" on her 30th birthday. Upon arrival, she's shocked to discover the cabin is double-booked, and Mack, a handsome American photographer with family ties to the island, also plans a solitary stay. There's no other accommodations on the small island, and the only boat that visits the island makes the trip just once each week (and that trip is cancelled due to weather) so Cleo and Mack are forced to share the open-floorplan cabin for weeks.
My thoughts: I appreciated the strong sense of place - the isolation, the relentless wind and cold, and the beauty of hidden coves. I also enjoyed the delightful cast of secondary characters and the community they formed, Being single until I was 35, I could relate to Cleo's introspection at age 30, and was pulled into Mack's journey through his separation. I was confused by the book's title - will all of the author's titles include the words 'one' or 'two'?
Cleo, a romance columnist, is unhappily sent by her editor to a remote Irish island to "marry herself" for her thirtieth birthday. At the same time, during a down time in his life, Mac, an American photographer, is given the keys to an Irish cottage by a distant relative. Turns out they're headed for the same cottage, the only place on the island to stay. Well, since this is a romance novel, you can kind of guess what ensues. However, this book is different and the romance is different. It's so new and refreshing, you can almost breathe the clean island air, feel the cold, sandy wind, and fall in love with the romance. All of the characters are fun and believable. I'm a fan of Josie Silver and this is her best book so far. Find a cozy chair, pour your glass of wine, wrap yourself in an afghan, stream Springsteen, and fall in love with One Night on the Island.
After a little bit of time, I decided on 4 stars. Josie Silver is big on numbers in her titles. Too bad Lydia was in the middle because it would be cute to have unrelated books One Day in December and One Night on the Island. Though, it was more than one night so the title is a bit meh for this one anyway! I really liked Cleo, she was such a fun, positive character. The setting of Salvation Island was so cozy and perfect for a romance. I was leery about Mac. I know that adults with children can and should fall in love again but I have a hard time loving books where this is the case. I have no justifiable opinions on the matter and I will certainly not give advice or tell anyone what to do. I don't even know what I'm trying to say! It just gets so complicated! But this was a cute book and I love loved the villagers of Salvation Island! I still have to read The Two Lives of Lydia Bird. An e-ARC I never got to!
2.5 rounded up because I'm in a good mood this morning. (But really prob a solid 2 stars)
I found the main character to be frustrating and quite annoying...especially at the beginning of the book, and I HATED the end. Hated it with a bleeding passion. I was so hopeful that it wouldn't go the direction it did, but alas--instalove wins. 😒
I will be honest - there was a moment where I was not feeling the Josie Silverness I have come to know and love with this book. It took a second to kick in, but once it did? IN LOVE. This isn’t my fave book she’s ever written, but I really came to love Cleo and Mack. The marriage with Mack and Susie was well written and realistic. I loved the relationship between Cleo and the islanders! A heartwarming, searching for the best of you story. Loved it!
3.5⭐️? maybe? I cannot put my finger on what kept me from loving this one. After enjoying Josie Silver’s two other books, I was excited to dive in. The first half of ONE NIGHT ON THE ISLAND took me two months to read, then I flew through the rest in one sitting. I’m happy I didn’t DNF this one, but I really wasn’t “sold” on this book until about halfway in.
I love Josie Silver’s prose, which is what kept me reading when I otherwise would have quit. Even when the plot dragged at the beginning, I was highlighting quotes throughout the story. I also ended up really liking Cleo and Mack as characters AND as a couple. I’ll be reading more from Josie Silver because I do love her unique, emotional writing.
One Night on the Island by Josie Silver. Pub Date: February 15, 2022. Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. This is not your typically romance novel and that’s why this one really resonated with me. A guy and a girl get stuck in the same vacation home while both are trying to escape their own lives and live off the grid for a bit. But in that escape, they learn so much about each other and what they both want in life. It’s a novel of grief, hope, love, escapism and building a life you want. I absolutely loved this novel. Run to pick this one up! When dating columnist Cleo Wilder is sent to a remote Irish island to "marry herself" for an article her plans to find herself and maybe finish one of the many half-written novels on her laptop before her upcoming 30th birthday are interrupted by Mack Sullivan, a distant cousin of her rented cottage's owner. Coming to the island of his ancestors in the midst of a divorce to try and give his wife and sons space to process and heal. Their forced proximity to each other, the two initially butt heads at every turn. But come nighttime, they share three facts about themselves. They're slowly falling in love with the island, and with each other, but where will they be left when the holiday is over and they go back to their separate lives?
After reading it One Day in December I was excited to see the world that Josie shaped for Mack and Cleo. She's a wonderful writer, Cleo and Mack are two leads that I was excited to read more about as the story progressed I also loved the memorable characters she populated the island with.
I found the ending a little unsatisfying, it felt more like I could see them being happy for now and not so much 'ever after'.
Thank you Random House and NetGalley for the ARC.

Grab a warm quilt or knitted blanket, a cup of tea, and settle in for a sweet, cozy read with One Night on the Island. I loved this story (Surprise! I love anything Josie Silver writes!) – the writing, the characters (main AND secondary), the location, the premise, etc. etc.!!
Cleo (from London) writes about dating and love for a magazine; as she approaches her 30th birthday, her boss sends her on a sort of solitary soul-finding sojourn on a remote Irish island. Meanwhile, Mac (from Boston) is a photographer who is struggling to face the reality of his crumbling marriage. He visits this same remote Irish island (Salvation Island) to connect with his roots and to come to grips with what his future holds. What ensues involves a one-bedroom double-booked cottage, tension (negative AND positive), compromise, chemistry, quirky/lovable island residents, a cozy knitting circle, and self-discovery above all.
I just loved this! Life and love aren’t easy, and this story embraces those realities. I was rooting for the characters, main and secondary, and I loved the sense of finding your people while finding yourself. Such a cozy, lovely read!
Thank you to @RandomHouse and @Netgalley for the honor of receiving an eARC in exchange for my honest review. What’s coming up next, @jodiesilverauthor? ❤️
Booking a one-way ticket to Salvation! This unexpected romance follows dating columnist Cleo as she sets out on a "self-coupling" journey in honor of her 30th birthday. She arrives at the remote Irish island of Salvation only to find that her tiny cottage has been double booked and she'll be forced to share it with an American photographer and father of two who is struggling with some things in his personal life. The story packs a surprising emotional punch, but I really found myself falling in love with the island and its inhabitants.
I full heartedly loved this book! The setting is perfect for this romance, where two lives are forced to merge for a short period of time. Cleo and Mack are two characters I liked from the start, and I was rooting for them the whole time. A small part of me would have been okay with them going their separate ways and with Mack fixing his marriage. But I was also okay with them finding each other again. We all hope for a love this big. I would love to see a sequel to their romance! JS does a great job of bringing the island to life and allows readers to get to know all of the characters deeper than their surface, making it feel as if you, too, are a part of Salvation!
I have been having a difficult time reviewing this book. Why? Maybe because it is a great book about important everyday issues that every day people deal with while trying to get on with their lives. There is some humor which borders on the hilarious while trying to sort out any number of problems. For Cleo it is wrapping her head around the notion that amidst all the Flamingoes she may encounter in her life, none may be hers or even a “maybe” match for her. Then there is the manipulation of her employer sending her on a quest to “marry herself” - stick around because it is going to be an interesting ride. Enter Mack with a sackful of personal and emotional baggage and- oh yeah - it is going to get inconvenient quickly as they both descend upon Otter Lodge seeking their separate and alone solitude. Not happening.
Josie Silver carved out a really fine story about “Life” being “the stuff that happens in the cracks between your plans and expectations.” Thank you Random House / Ballantine Books for a copy.
3.5 stars
Thank you Randomhouse for a gifted copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
I love Josie Silver but I thought this one was a bit lacking. It was very character driven and I struggled with it. It's also definitely more women's fiction than romance. I enjoyed reading about Cleo's experience on this remote island - making friends with the locals, learning more about herself and not being afraid to give up everything she knows to pursue her dreams. The ending left me wondering about Cleo and Mack's relationship/future though.
I found One Night on the Island to be very different from what I was expecting but in a wonderful way. I nearly gave up on it one-fourth of the way through but am so incredibly glad I didn’t. I found the characters to be dynamic and relatable. I loved the way Josie Silver wrote about Mack’s story. I appreciated the focus she put on his journey and the relatability of it all. I highly recommend this book. Thank you for an advanced copy.
The story One Night on the Island is a story about Cleo a magazine writer from London. She is embarking on a trip to an island off the coast of Ireland where she is spending her 30th birthday and hoping to reinvigorate herself for her column. Mack an American from Boston is also traveling to the island to do some ancestry research and photograph the ancestral island. Unbeknownst to them the only lodge on the island was double booked and there is only one bed. The next boat to the mainland doesn’t come for a week and neither of them is planning to get on it. I loved how the story was told from both their perspectives in alternating chapters. The one bed, enemies to lovers trope was fun to read. Once again Josie Silver’s writing and story telling was superb. The first half of the book was slow build where they got to know each other, and the second half was more emotionally driven as each of them had to deal with things in their personal lives that were difficult.

This was a cute, endearing and a little kooky romance! I liked both of the main characters, as well as the entertaining cast of characters on the island.
