I'm a sucker for any setting in Ireland so that's what first drew me to this book and it did not disappoint. Cleo and Mack find themselves double booked for the same cottage on a small Irish island. Sparks don't fly at first as they each try to claim their territory but slowly they get to know one other and decide to have a "holiday romance" with no strings attached. The island has a wonderful cast of characters. It certainly made me want to pack my bags and return to the Emerald Isle.
My first book of 2022 might be my last. Not sure other books will hold up after this one. I am emotionally wrecked.! What a breathtakingly beautiful story about love, not just for another person, but more importantly for yourself. Wow. Just wow!
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House/Ballantine Books for the opportunity to read a digital ARC in return for an honest review.
I personally prefer a little more romance to my romance novels but I wouldn’t want that to deter anyone from buying this book! Not every book needs a ton of romance and I think for certain readers who want romance but not over the top then this will be the perfect book for them!
I really enjoyed this book. It was different from most love stories as a lot of it focused on the two individual characters. I loved it.
I love the premise of this book and Cleo as a character. I did not really connect with Mack and found the story line for why he was on the island weak and very strange that he refused to leave the cottage when Cleo had a paid reservation. That kind of creeped me out and impacted my enjoyment of the book. I loved the supporting cast of characters on the island-- they were all quirky and so supportive.
My main gripe with this book is I never felt the romance between the two main character's and because of that, everything kind of fell flat for me. I think if you do believe the romance you could potentially get a lot out of this story and the themes/situations explored, just wasn't exactly my cup of tea.
So who's paying for me to move to a remote island in Ireland? Because of this book I am ready! Silver describes a beautiful escape that makes the reader feel like they are there right beside the main characters. I'm ready to book my trip
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! When two people, both looking forward to spending time by themselves trying to figure some things out, end up at the same one room cabin, they are both looking forward to the other leaving as soon as the next ferry arrives. Unfortunately, the weather conspires against them and keeps the ferry boat from coming. Mack just wants some time to get to know his heritage and take some photos. Cleo is supposed to be gaining a new perspective for her dating column as she spends time doing some self-care. Follow their adventures as they get to know the island, it’s inhabitants, and each other, and realize they don’t mind the other being there as much as they thought they would.
I got the point of this one: loving yourself is enough; trust yourself and know your self worth. I love that message. However, it took forever and a day to tell the story. By the time I reached the 50% mark, I just wanted them to wrap it up and be done. My favorite part of this story was the women of Salvation Island. I want them in my corner for sure.
Thank you NetGallery for the advanced copy of One Night on the Island! Josie Silver books never disappoint. This one is fun and unique and filled with romance, self discovery and the charms of an Irish Island.
Cleo, 29 year old writer of a British dating column who is feeling unsettled and aimless in her life. Having had little luck in the dating department, Cleo decides to do something quite novel and daring called self coupling which is basically a fancy way of saying she is going to start putting herself first in life and in love and will marry herself. Cleo travels to Salvation Island, a small island off the coast of Ireland, to stay in a cabin however, she is in for quite the surprise when she arrives to find her cabin occupied. Mack, a handsome American has also rented the cabin during the same period as Cleo and both are determined to stay put. As the ferry won't be back around for another week, the pair is forced to find a way to live together, and it might just be the best bad luck that Cleo has ever had.
One Night on the Island is a sweet, charming story full of real emotions, lyrical prose, and flawed but resilient characters that is sure to bring laughter as well as a few tears to your eyes. Silver puts a unique spin on the forced together/one room trope with the inclusion of self coupling, setting this romantic comedy apart from others in the genre. The island setting provided a warm and cozy atmosphere to the story that extended to the tightknit community of women who reside on the island together and lean upon each other for strength year round. Each character in the story, from Cleo and Mack to each and every one of the islanders, brought their own unique personality to the mix, adding a heartwarming found family feel to the story. Told in alternating chapters from both Cleo and Mack's perspective, readers will soon find themselves completely invested in Cleo and Mack's relationship and the outcome at the end of their stay in the cabin. Part romance, part self discovery and one hundred percent enjoyable, One Night on the Island is the perfect fiction book to add to your must read list for the year.
I loved the setting and the Island residents in this book. I liked this book but not as much as I was expecting. I had a hard time connecting with Mac which made it hard for me to enjoy the romance aspect of the book.

One Night on the Island was a beautifully written and emotional romance story. Cleo is single and about to turn thirty years old, working for an online magazine column, writing all about love. Her boss sends her to a remote island in Ireland for self coupling for an article she is writing. When Cleo gets there, things take a turn when Mack has rented the same cabin as she did. Without giving too much away, this was a very sweet story that explores more topics and emotions beyond romance. My favorite parts about this story was definitely the environment and the characters. Even the supporting characters really seemed to come to life to me off the page and I enjoyed reading about them. I loved the idea of this island and how this was captured in the story. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys romance stories as well as Josie Silver's books!
This one while will not be a favorite turned out to be an enjoyable read that I'm glad I read, though I don't know if I would pick up anything else by this author.
Thank you NetGalley and Random House/Ballantine for the advance copy of this book. I always strive to be honest, and unfortunately this book didn't work for me.
I've read Josie's other two books and felt similarly to them as I did here - I find her characters sweet, but I am unable to connect with them or even feel invested in their story. Her writing is beautiful, but I find my mind constantly wandering and unable to commit to the story. The setting was fantastic, yet also not one I wanted to read about. I don't know why, but I cannot ever seem to fully click into Silver's stories.
If you are a fan of her other works you will likely really enjoy this. If you are like me and had trouble getting into her other two, I would recommend passing on this one.
I absolutely loved this and think it already may be one of my favorite romance books of 2022. It’s also definitely my favorite Josie Silver book to date!
This was more than just a love story. It touched on growing up, marriage separation, women empowerment, and the pressures women face to settle down. I found Cleo’s journey of self discovery and acceptance really empowering and relatable.
The author built a beautiful setting and a wonderful community of characters. The side characters were all delightful and quirky and provided so much depth to the story.
I also really enjoyed the romance between Mack and Cleo. To me it felt natural, believable, and full of energy. There were definitely parts of this book that broke my heart but that just made the journey even more satisfying.
Thank you NetGalley and Ballantine Books for the ARC.

In one sentence: Cleo and Mack are both looking for alone time on Salvation Island - but a double booking means they'll be alone together.
I wasn't sure how I felt about this book initially - the first 25% were a little slow, and I had trouble connecting to Cleo and Mack. But as I got more comfortable, I really fell in love with them and Salvation Island. The island and its residents are a highlight of the book - I loved the kindness and acceptance that the residents showed each other, as well as Cleo and Mack. I also liked that romance isn't the only plot line - both protagonists undergo journeys of self-discovery, and I enjoyed seeing them grow. Cleo's "marriage to herself" could have been a silly plot point, but Silver handled it beautifully.
This is a slower-paced romance (like Salvation Island itself), and I think readers will enjoy cozying up with it on a dreary winter day.

Review posted to Goodreads 12/29/21, to be posted to Instagram closer to pub date.
In all honesty, at first I was not really connecting to the story as the main character is turning thirty, and I am way past that. But as the story went on, and the main character shared more of herself, I was able to understand her feelings as I have lived through some of those same insecurities and heartaches. The story flowed well, I shed some tears, and the ending was perfect. It’s my last book of 2021, and it’s a great way to end it!
I was given this book as an ARC for an honest review.
My cheeks hurt and my heart has grown several sizes by the the of reading (nay, flying through) One Night On The Island. I'm not much of a romance reader but authors like Josie Silver have unlocked this genre for me with the thoughtful, dynamic stories like this one. The "share one bed" trope gets a fresh take when a rental cottage on a remote Irish Island gets double booked. Instead of giving readers a shallow story of expected steamy scenes, we witness lost Cleo navigating self-discovery alongside a hurting, complicated Mack. I appreciate that Cleo is shaped by the crew of friends she makes, and the independence she gains, rather than this whole story revolving around a man. Female empowerment, friendship and not comprising are themes that all shine through and I can promise I'll be returning to this book - Perhaps the title hints at how readers will only need one night of reading to escape reality and join Cleo and crew in Ireland.
Cleo has been looking for her flamingo for years, but when her boss suggests she head off for a vacation of alone time and a self coupling, she finally gives in. When she gets to the cottage to find a man there however, she is infuriated. Unfortunately there is nowhere else to stay on the island so she is stuck living with Mack, who is escaping his separation and missing his two boys. Their hate quickly turns to a friendship and more, however, neither knows how to handle it.
A solid enemies to lovers! This island just sounds like the most amazing place! I just wanted to visit and meet all the wonderful locals! I seriously love when a novel has as fantastic side characters as it does main characters. I just adored Mack. While he was struggling so much, the way he finally opened up to Cleo and the way her treated her gave me hope that guys like him can actually exist. I also truly loved that Cleo kept focus on growing as a person and her own personal journey throughout her time on the island. Josie Silver has blown me away with all of her books so far, and this one is no different! I am already not so patiently waiting her next book!
