When I saw this author wrote another book, I was SO excited to read it! I loved her last two books, and couldn’t wait to read another by her. I unfortunately did not love this book as much. I thought the concept for the book was so good, but it fell flat for me.
I did enjoy the dual perspective in this book, as well as the Ireland setting. I found myself wishing I was there! I was not a huge fan of the characters in the book, I found I couldn’t connect with them. I know a-lot of others loved this book, so I do recommend checking it out! It just wasn’t for me.
I like Josie Silver. Her last book made me cry. This one was good as well. I would recommend this to my friends.
Thanks so much to Netgalley & Ballantine Books for the e-book of One Night on the Island!
I admittedly held off on reading One Night on the Island because while I liked some of Josie Silver's past books (One Day in December & The Two Lives of Lydia Bird), I didn't love them! But surprise, surprise, I enjoyed One Night on the Island so much and really wished I'd picked it up sooner! It had just the right mix of banter, romance, self discovery, friendship, the list goes on! Salvation Island was definitely some place special and I couldn't help but fall in the love with this small town community and the island itself! So many lessons to learn from this one about life, love and growing up. It just hit all the right notes for me and was paced so perfectly! I highly recommend it!
There was a lot to like about ONE NIGHT ON THE ISLAND, particularly the extrememly cozy setting--ignore the summery vibes of the cover this novel is set in the fall and features tons of rain and warm blankets and hot drinks and dark wooden pubs offering comfort food and warm fires--of Otter Cottage and the whimsical vibes of the remote island of Salvation, Ireland. I adored all of the townspeople (I would read a book from TK perspective in a heartbeat) and the close-knit community vibes. The biggest issue, though, was that I didn't quit jive with the central point of the novel: the romance between Cleo and Mac. I didn't particularly care much for either of them, didn't really feel the level of intense chemistry between them I was supposed to feel, and didn't love a lot of their backstories (the self-coupling idea should have spoken to me, but it just felt *so* schmaltzy and over-the-top.) There was so much potential for "there's only one bed" slow-burn romance and instead it went just over the line into cheesy Hallmark movie territory for my taste. This felt like it was aiming for an audience of older women (nothing wrong with that!) but since protagonists are in their 30s, it didn't quite mesh. I also wasn't a huge fan of where Mac's relationship with his wife ended up/where Cleo and Mac's relatiionship ended up. That said, I did have a good time reading this book and if you're looking for the ultimate cozy vibes, this book has you covered.
You know that subReddit thread AITA, where people give situations wanting to know “Am I The Asshole”? I feel like the answer to this one would be Everyone Sucks Here.
Cleo and Mack both show up at the same small lodge on an Irish island expecting to spend some solitary time contemplating their life. When the booking mix up is discovered, neither is gracious or understanding about the situation, instead digging in their heels and seeing what they could do to make the other person leave on the next boat out…which isn’t for several days.
Of course, bad weather forces a week’s delay in the departure for one of them (still not determined) and the more they get to know each other - oftentimes aided by copious amounts of whiskey - the more they become sympathetic towards each other and the reason that brought them to Salvation Island. (Cue eye roll at the island name…)
You know who didn’t become sympathetic towards the characters? ME.
I felt like there was a bit of a bait and switch with this one, with its cute book cover and rom-com vibe. But the heroine is a self-centered drama queen and the hero is technically still married, making his relationship with the heroine a bitter drink to swallow. For me at least, there is very little that’s romantic about a married man getting involved with another woman and the way it went down here left a sour taste in my mouth. (Are there ways I could have been okay with it? Yes, actually…but I’m not going into that here.)
But dammit. The writing in this book is beautiful, I loved the people of the island, and the author made Salvation Island sound like a lovely place to spend an extended vacation! The last third of the book pulled at my heartstrings and almost made me feel something other than contempt for Cleo and Mack. Almost.
This one is so hard to rate. I didn’t like the characters in the beginning, and even after getting to know them it wasn’t enough for me to overlook their flaws, let alone root for them as individuals or a couple. I loathed the squishy, not happily ever after ending. I did a combination read/listen to One Night on the Island and not even the excellent narration gained this story extra favor. My overall feeling about this book could be summed up with the word meh.

Right off the bat let me say this was not your typical rom-com, in fact it's not your typical romance either. As someone who reads a tons of romance this was different but I found in a good way. There was something refreshing about it for me.
Cleo writes the dating column but is more than little lost when it comes to her own life. She is the youngest child which means everyone is super protective. Her love life is nonexistent and she dreams of finishing her novel. She gets inspired by Emma Watson's self marriage and runs off to the remote island of Salvation. The name is poetic is it not?
It is there she meets Mark, an American who has left his estranged wife and two boys in Boston. He is attempting to put the pieces of his broken family back together. He and Cleo end up in the same hotel room that they both rented and both refuse to leave.
Both Mark and Cleo are on a journey of self discovery and a life changing experience. For Mark he struggles to stay faithful to a wife who isn't happy with him anymore. While Cleo struggles to not cheat on herself with Mark.
I will say that this is one that I had to read twice before I was certain I liked it. After reading the first time I was like "Nope" but I gave it a second go and enjoyed it the second time around. I felt for both Mark and Cleo and the journey they both take.
I saw someone say, "this is a book I liked, but will forget" and I'm sad to say I agree. This was a book that I enjoyed reading, but nothing stuck out to me and at some points I will admit I was a little bored.
This was a quiet romance, and no this does not take place on an island in just one night but many nights. So the title is very misleading.
I liked the characters, but there wasn't much depth to any of them and the ending made me happy. If you want just a nice little quiet romance then pick this book up.
This isn't the first book I've read by this author, but as much as I loved her first book, I may love this one even more! The story resonated with me on so many levels and is one I'm buying so I can read it again (and again!) Yes, the story sometimes stretches reality, but don't most stories? Who cares? I want to live on Salvation Island!!! The author paints loveable, quirky, realistic townspeople you feel you know, people you want to invite to your house.
Cleo and Mac pack plenty of baggage with them as they travel to the island where they're both hoping for some alone time to figure out their life. Of course, that doesn't happen as they find out they've both booked the same quaint lodging out in the middle of nowhere (if that's at all possible on a small island!)
This story's underlying message, to me anyway, was to embrace the little things in life. To live simply, love without expectations, and follow your heart in all things.
If you're looking for a fun (and binge-worthy) story full of heart and hope, I highly recommend this book! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with one of the best stories I've read!
Cleo is spending her thirtieth birthday alone , which is the last thing that a dating columnist wants. Her boss decides to send her to an Irish Island to marry herself, as this will make a great column for others to read. On the remote Irish island, whe meets Mac, who is also looking forward to some time to himself. Wanting some distance between himself and his wife who are separated, he hads back to his Irish roots.
Unfortunately, a mix-up with the bookings means both solitude seekers have reserved the same one-bedroom hideaway on exactly the same dates. Cleo and Mac are instantly at each other, trying to get the other to leave. When it becomes clear neither is moving. they have a truce to stay on their own half of the house and keep to themselves, unless in the "common" kitchen area.
The longer Cleo and Mac are together, the more the chemistry builds. But their lives are complicated and being from Boston and London adds distance, on top of everything else going against them. The end of this took went about their relationship in a different way that wasn't your typical happily every after, but it fit the book and the growth in characters perfectly! Jose Silver is fast becoming a favorite author of mine!
I rate this book as 4 🌟!
I'd like to say a huge thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Cleo a dating columnist is sent on a self-coupling retreat by her boss. She agrees with the hope to re-energize herself and figure out her next steps in her love life and career. Once she arrives to the little remote Irish island she finds there was a mix up with her luxury cabin and she's stuck with man, Mac until the next ferry arrives. I felt this was a bit more finding yourself than romance but the romance did happen eventually and it was cute. I enjoyed the island characters more than the possible romantic partners. If you liked her previous books, I think you'd like this one as well.
Cleo Wilder is about to turn thirty and her career, as well as her love life, is in a slump. Cleo is a dating columnist and her boss sends her as a retreat of sorts to a remote Irish island to re-center herself. It's very different than her life in busy London, but maybe this is just what she needs to figure out her next step. She has rented a luxurious cabin on Salvation Island, but her plans go awry when there's another person who has booked her cabin. A one Mac Sullivan, who is visiting the island for some rest after his marriage went up in flames. Both Cleo and Mac realize that only one person can stay in the cabin, so who will go? Unfortunately, just when they figure out who is going to leave, ferry service off the island has been suspended and there's no where else to stay on the island. Cue the drama. Until ferry service is back, both Cleo and Mac have to live together in this cabin and as they do, they get to know each other better. Cleo finds out what exactly brings Mac to this remote island and Mac gets to connect with Cleo further. Before they know it, both they both are connecting like they never thought they would. Josie Silver's One Night on the Island is a sweet book about finding love in unexpected places.
Cleo and Mac are such great characters in One Night on the Island. I really enjoyed their story and how they went from sort-of-enemies-to something more. Cleo is in a slump and Mac has his own baggage, so it was nice to have such complex, mature characters represented. While I enjoyed both Cleo and Mac, I didn't always connect with them like I wanted to.
One aspect of One Night on the Island that I enjoyed was Silver's depictions of a remote Irish island and its quirky residents. The townspeople, their customs, and the way life is lived on the island had me laughing out loud at times. It reminded me a bit of Oakley's The Invisible Husband of Frick Island.
While I liked One Day in December a bit more than One Night on the Island, as I felt it packed more of an emotional punch, it was still a solid read for fans of Silver, Beth O'Leary, as well as realistic stories with happy endings. So, are you a fan of Josie Silver? Have you read One Night on the Island? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
I was really looking forward to this one since I’ve loved all her other books. However, there was little to root for with the two main characters. Both had their flaws and I just couldn’t see them together. I skimmed the last half of the book and thought it was good enough.
From the author of One Day in December, Josie Silver, comes One Night on the Island. I really loved this read. This was such a great rom-com that still had a bit of depth. Two strangers, one cottage, on an island with only a boat every two weeks for a way out. What could go wrong?
So many storylines have character development going the path of powerful strength, and forward thinking and breaking free to move forward, but One Night on the Island was so different. It made it so beautiful. Character development in this storyline was a gentle breaking of a shell, throwing off the things that hinder, the things that are extra, to reveal who she is and what really matters most.
I loved how Cleo allowed herself to be a part of the community on the island and built relationships with strangers that changed her life.
This was such an emotional roller coaster, but in the best of ways.

I felt transported to Ireland and could literally feel the stress in my shoulders melt away along with the protagonist. Sometimes we all just need to slown down and get a new perspective in order to change our lives for the better. That is what this book illustrates through a romance that will tear at your emotions. Growth into womanhood, sisterhood, parenting, and coupling is all explored through these magnetic characters. Warning: This novel may cause you to sell all of your belongings and move to a remote location. 😉
Perfectly Josie Silver. Two hurting people meet on an island. You can expect romance, depth of character, and layered themes of life experiences. I enjoyed this.
This was my first book by this author, It was pretty enjoyable. I would give this book a 5 star rating! It was a pretty Quick and easy read!
I didn't hate it, but I didn't like it. It was too slow and hard for me to get into. I didn't find myself invested in or caring about any of the characters. :(
A one bed trope? Fabulous. This story was fun to read and made me laugh in all the right places. The story wasn't captivating the entire time as it's a similar type story we see in many novels. Ex, writer meets cute man. Not my favorite, but a mostly fun read.
The premise was enough to pull me in and i do usually enjoy the author's work but there was something missing for me. It kept dragging. i truly enjoyed the small town vibes and how cozy it was but it was truly lacking chemistry, I tried and tried to buy into the main characters but couldn't. it did take me some time to finish it
Thank you so much to @netgalley for the eARC. I enjoyed Josie Silver's previous books but struggled with this one. I enjoyed the beautiful island setting and most the characters, but I found the enemies to lovers vibe more of a let's be rude to each other before we started acting like decent people one.
