If you need a romantic escape into a picturesque town on the sea, this book may be for you! Although I enjoyed this author’s One Day in December, I was not able to get into this book like I had hoped. It felt bland and predictable to me. I did enjoy the colorful set of characters who Cleo befriended on the island, and the descriptions of the setting. I really wish I had liked it more!
Thank you very much to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Book-Ballantine for the advanced reader’s copy of this book.
Be still my heart! What a wonderful book that fell into my lap at just the right time! I’ve been on the struggle bus lately when it comes to finding time to read - turns out I just needed to actually read something GOOD!
There’s angst, romance, fantastic writing - but most of all there’s a story about finding yourself. Mack and Cleo find themselves on a remote Irish island in a double-booked cabin. Neither are happy. But what starts out as two lost souls not happy with their predicament ends up turning into what they called “micro-love” but was really so much more. In the middle of that, Cleo finds out who she’s really meant to be and Mack discovers what he really wants. Is there a HEA? Of course - but it’s the HEA that would only work for Mack and Cleo. For awhile there I wasn’t so sure.
I’ve really enjoyed other books by Josie Silver. This one is by far my favorite. Great writing, authentic characters, a great backdrop with an eclectic cast of characters. Really, really, really enjoyed this one!
Thanks so much to Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Publishing for providing me with an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first book by Josie Silver, and I will definitely be looking into her others! This book was a whirlwind of emotions for me. I loved the characters and how they were both lovable but also a bit broken at the same time. They were each other's perfect match. I especially loved the forced proximity and limited time aspect of their romance. It was slow burn enough that I truly understood their connection, but not too slow that by the time something happened between them one of them had to leave.
I especially enjoyed how both people had their own journeys of self-discovery and realization that they had to embark on in addition to the romance itself, and how both had lives outside of their "Salvation" bubble. It was the perfect getaway. The heroine needed to come to terms with her life and realize that self-love is enough. The hero had to come to terms with the fact that his life as he knew it was changing. And they were both somehow able to do that on this island with each other, not the source of each other's growth, but the source of each other's happiness.
The only problem I had was the fact that the hero was actually married, even though his wife had moved on and their relationship was in shambled. I didn't like the "two-women" aspect and the fact that he had to come to terms with the end of his marriage before he could move forward with the heroine.
All of that said, I would definitely recommend this book!
Imagine traveling to a remote island in Ireland as part of your job with all expenses paid. It sounds like a dream come true until you realize you are not alone in the cabin you were renting for yourself. Cleo is a writer in London who writes a dating column. After no luck searching for love she travels to Salvation Island to marry herself on her 30th birthday. However when she arrives to her cabin she finds that there is an American man who also claims to be staying in the one bedroom cabin. Although he looks like Hans Solo she has no desire to be sharing her cabin with him. What follows is a story that speaks to everyone of us about the choices we make and finding our true happiness.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a nice romance novel. It was a little predictable in some areas but I thought it had a great message and I truly cared about all of the characters. I think we all need a piece of Salvation Island. A great book especially when you are looking for a little escape from the real world.

// Just finished this book last night & wow, I can’t stop thinking about it!
One Night on the Island by @josiesilverauthor is set in a quaint little town in Ireland called Salvation Island. Cleo & Mack are both looking for some time away for different reasons, but quickly realize they are double booked for the same little cabin & begrudgingly decide to make the best of it.
This book has everything: written in dual perspective with a town full of sweet quirky people & cozy descriptions of Ireland that has me googling flights ASAP.
I don’t want to spoil too much, but if you like snuggling under comfy blankets & getting lost in a gem of a book, put this one on your radar. It comes out 2.15.2022 & is well worth the wait. Huge thanks to @netgalley & @randomhouse for the ARC 💚 //
Full review will be posted on my Instagram @oh.how.novel on 2.15.2022, but there is a teaser up now!
I adore Josie Silver's books and One Night on the Island is no different. It took a while to draw me in (about 40% of the way through) but when it did I could not put it down. Similar to Cleo I fell in love with Salvation and wish. it was somewhere I can go. The residents made you laugh and I honestly cried a bit with them. I don't think I even fell in love with Cleo and Mack but instead with Cleo and her relationship with the citizens of Salvation Island. It's beautifully written and incredibly sweet. I would recommend this one again and again.
When you read it you'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll learn about loving yourself and doing what is ultimately best for YOU.
*3.5
I enjoyed this book but it was missing something for me. The romance didn't do a lot and I felt like we didn't get a good enough glimpse into their actual feelings for each other. Also the ending was super weird and I didn't like it.
I received an arc from netgalley.
Leave it to Josie Silver to write yet another romance that is SO SO SO CLOSE to being great. With her previous books, I couldn't always put my finger on what it was that kept me from falling in love with the characters and rooting for them, and this book wasn't exactly anything different on that front. So close, but something was just off.
Oh, Mack and Cleo- you've turned my heart to much!!!!!! One Night on the Island, by Josie Silver is an absolute emotional romcom delight. I loved the banter and the colorful cast of supporting characters and the setting and of course Mack and Cleo and... you get the idea. So, what didn't I like- not a thing. Highly recommend!!!
Cleo is on a journey of self discovery. Mack is escaping his life and trying to learn more about his family history. Being forced together in a cabin in the cold is a recipe for learning to enjoy each other’s company. I loved watching them grow to love themselves and each other. I found Mack’s support of Cleo’ unusual journey beautiful. I loved cleo’s patience with Mack’s family drama and life changes.
Can I just say that Josie Silver has outdone herself again this time? This may be my favorite Silver book so far because of the emotions that has been carved into it and Silver's writing is just impeccable. If you want to laugh, cry, and squeal your heart out, this book is just for you.
One Night on the Island was 5+ star book for me. I highlighted so many parts that resonated for me throughout the book and I know this is one that I will be re-reading. Cleo and Mack (and all of Salvation Island) are such great characters. Cloe is relatable and her quest to be there for herself is inspiring and part of what makes this book more than a great romance (which it absolutely is). Mack is a great guy all around: thoughtful, perceptive and a fantastic Dad. Their story is one of growth and self-acceptance and it was profoundly romantic and touching. I loved all the side characters, down to Susie, Mack's ex. I loved how she was portrayed as a dimensional person, no easy outs making one person the bad one to facilitate the plot resolution. It was a complex story that had me hooked from the beginning, when then genuinely disliked each other, through the emotional middle to a conclusion that did justice to both Cleo's and Mack's inner search. As a fan of One Day in December, I can say that this is a very different book, but the emotional journey was just as satisfying. Highly recommended!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Aghh!!! This was SO GOOD!!! I don't know how Josie Silver manages to suck her readers into every story so completely, but sign me up for every book she ever writes. Loved this one!
4.5
this book was truly beautiful … some of the LINES, man … gah. really lovely. i stalled a bit at about 75% but pushed through and am so glad. cleo’s journey was inspiring — the whole, love will come when you least expect it … and are READY for it, song and dance … loved it.

Ah damn, this book was cute as hell. Can I go live on Salvation? Please?
I loved every character in this book. And can we talk about how well some really tough topics were handled in this? *chefs kiss*
BRB gotta go to Salvation's knitting circle now.
I knew Josie was going to wreck me. There’s sisterhood that’s so tender you will cry. I fell in love with the citizens of salvation island.
There’s this unexpected love that catches Cleo and Mack off guard that will catch you off guard too and you’re left wanting so much more.
What stood out to me the most was Cleo and her journey towards loving herself. This is a story about falling in love with yourself more than anything else.
This was a beautiful story. I was left wanting to much more.
Wonderful story, and beautiful writing! Will definitely recommend to friends.
A great story that deals with real life challenges that aren’t always black and white. You’ll laugh and cry then cry some more
Much like One Day in December, One Night on the Island is charming and fun. Cleo and Mack are very fun characters to have to reside in the same cottage at the same time when they're both supposed to be chill and relaxing alone. Salvation Island was a super fun setting and the characters were great!
Another sweet read by Josie Silver! This beautifully written story of Cleo and Mack made me feel so many things. This is a story of two people from different parts of the world who find themselves in the same beautiful island cottage at the same time. Both are living very different lives and both are searching to find themselves beyond the circumstances of their lives. Sweet and romantic, but filled with deep emotional moments, Silver has written another fantastic story. Thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Oh Josie Silver has a special gift for writing sweet stories that work their way into your heart! I was thrilled to receive an ARC of One Night on the Island and I was not disappointed in this novel. Cleo is a writer, she’s spent her career writing about her quest for love, but she’s turning thirty and really what she wants to do is write a novel. In a bizarre twist, she’s sent to a remote island to write about a marriage “to herself.” Chloe is eager to escape London, her mediocre friends and the mundane predictable life she’s found herself in. What she’s not prepared for is to spend her time away in a very remote single room house with Mack, a grumpy American. Mack has spent his entire life trying to make it to this tiny Irish island to photograph the places and people he grew up hearing about. He’s also escaping from his crumbling marriage and the last thing he wants to do is spend his time with an English woman filled with spite. Set in likely the most beautiful, romantic and serene place, One Night on the Island explores what happens when two total opposite strangers wind up sharing a home and discovering a community that they can’t imagine leaving behind. I enjoyed Chloe and Mack, but I also fell in love with the residents of Salvation Island and found the community to be filled with an amazing cast of characters. One Night on the Island isn’t just about finding love, but also about finding your way on paths that are different than the ones you initially imagined and discovering that sometimes plan B is even better.
A sincere thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
