Went into this book blind and was pleasantly surprised to find out that its a flirty, sexy suspense. Great drama, unable to put it down. This was a mixture of romance, intrigue, suspense, mystery, and emotional all in one. REALLY liked this one!!!
SYNOPSIS: A sexy suspense novel about the kind of addictive, obsessive love that keeps you coming back––no matter how hard you try to look away.
REVIEW: First, let me say I'm a Carola Lovering FAN. I LOVED Tell Me Lies, and with her sophomore novel, I loved it almost just as much. So when I saw she was coming out with a third, I knew I had to have it. This book was no less captivating. It struggled a bit at times, falling a bit "dead" at moments, but overall, the thriller captured my attention, and I'd have no problem recommending it and/or buying it for my friends. Lovering is becoming one of my go-to authors and I'm thrilled!
VERDICT: 4 STARS
Thank you to netgalley and St. Martin's Press for a copy of this one!
From the author of Tell Me Lies and Too Good to Be True comes Carola Lovering's Can't Look Away, a sexy suspense novel about the kind of addictive, obsessive love that keeps you coming back––no matter how hard you try to look away.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review an advanced readers copy of this book. This in no way affects my review, all opinions are my own.
This book starts with an incredibly clichéd storyline - boy in a rock band spots a girl in the crowd and the two fall in love. With a start like that, I was already so skeptical. The writing style was also a little juvenile in a way where I thought this might've actually been a YA book. Luckily, as the story progressed I think it did get better and was more suspenseful than anticipated. I liked the back and forth time jumps and the point views changing to give us more context to Molly and Jake's histories.
The ending left me so confused because I feel like it wasn't realistic? (SPOILER AHEAD) In what world would Sabrina not face any repercussions for pushing a pregnant woman down the stairs? I'm supposed to accept that there were no legal consequences from that? I did enjoy reading this one because it was entertaining but did I think it was really that great? No, probably not.
This was an addictive one. I couldn’t stop reading and I had to know what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed this one. So much more than Tell Me Lies. I wouldn’t classify this as a thriller.. more suspense.
I really enjoyed this book, but not as much as Lovering's first novel. The character development was excellent and the story kept me on my toes.
I really enjoyed this book and it was full of thrills and suspense. If you like psychological thrillers then definitely read this one.
A valentine to those crushes we have on that rebel musician, in that local hot band. It’s life in the fast lane when struggling is chic, and your love is on the top ten in the form of a hit song. It’s waking up tired of the life and getting a chance at different. It’s coming to terms with lost and love with a steady heartbeat. It’s a great read.
This multiple POV novel was filled with tension, suspense, and jealousy- and I enjoyed each and every second of it. Sabrina’s perspective creeped me out from very early on, and gave me strong Joe from “You” vibes. I really love a good stalker story!
I flew threw this book, and really liked how it alternated from past to present timelines- giving us glimpses into the history between each character. I did predict one of the twists pretty early on, but was pleasantly surprised with how everything came together in the end.
This was a really entertaining, page-turning thriller! I’m excited to read more books by this author in the future.
Thank you to Netgalley and the author for my e-copy to read and honestly review!
Molly and Jake hit it off and soon they are head over heels in love but they're young and there are just a few things getting in the way! One of those things is Jake's music career which takes him on the road A LOT and it doesn't help that he's a bit self-absorbed with not only his music but himself. Then there's his ex, CC who just can't seem to let Jake go and blames Jake for leaving her completely on Molly. It doesn't help that he wrote a song about Molly - two if you want to get technical - January Girl was about Molly, too.
Molly is a good soul; a struggling writer who's not without her own issues but she loves Jake with all her heart. There's nothing she wouldn't do for Jake and that includes protecting him from himself. Moving on and happily married, she is blindsided when a blast from her past renters her life and all hell breaks loose!
|loved the way this one was told! Alternating timelines and alternating POVs between Molly, Jake and Sabrina. The varying POVs give a unique and multifaceted perspective, one I could appreciate because this story needed to be heard from different angles!
This is such a well-paced book that I flew through it. Talk about a binge-worthy book!
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for sending a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love Carola Lovering’s books, and Can’t Look Away is an awesome read! It’s an engrossing thriller with twists galore. I cannot wait to read her next book!
Entertaining and draws you in.
I wanted to see when 'she' would get caught. Would she slip up, would someone out her, would she miss covering her tracks?
I liked the lives that were intertwined. It didn't lul and I was interested in each character.
I really liked the ending before the epilogue, it felt real and I was content with the characters endings.
The epilogue I didn't love as much, I don't think she would have been able to stop stalking and meddling so easily and that she wouldn't in some way be punished for what she did.
We've all read a book like this before. Boy and girl meet, boy and girl fall in love, boy leaves a prior girl behind for this new girl, prior girl seeks revenge.
Lovering hooked me with Too Good To Be True - a favorite of mine a couple years ago. I was so excited to pick up Can't Look Away and there was a ton to love about it but it didn't hold a candle to Too Good for me.
Though the story felt familiar in many ways, I did love the plotlines that helped it stand out. For example, I don't read many novels about quasi-famous bands/singers and that storyline was really fun and exciting.
I also loved that the "suspenseful" parts weren't overly drawn out. The mysterious narrator was revealed quickly and that was a relief because it was obvious who it was and the story may have lost some luster had that been turned into a "big" reveal.
There were twists that I didn't expect and I loved the way everything played out.
It was also fun that this really was a romantic thriller which I feel is a genre that is so tough to do. There was a love story, there was suspense, there was thrill.
While this may not have lived up to Too Good for me, it was still excellent. Lovering has solidified herself as a must read author for me!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy.
Omg. Her writing is just so beautiful. I feel like she really does well with character development and sucking you in to feel so deeply for the characters. At the end i just felt emotional because i felt for them and everything they went through.
And i love how she tackled infertility and MC. As someone who’s struggled with both, i felt it was done well.
Sabrina—- man what a character. Throughout i just did not like her, as you’re not meant to really but i still felt for her and i think that’s Lovering’s gift of writing there.
Just a wonderful story. Thoroughly loved it.
This one was just not what I thought it would be. Catching cover though!
Thank you NetGalley for providing a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Looking at the cover, I was intrigued, thinking that this was a thriller. However, I was surprised that this would be more of a dramatic suspenseful romance. This was my first book by this author and I can see why everyone all over Booksta is so obsessed with her!
Molly is such a lovable complex main character who is in love with two different men, following two different timelines and her life (who doesn’t love this set up)?
Overall themes of love, parenting, obsession, and human flaws. Absolutely loved this one.
This book let me down.
It was not what I thought it was going to be.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC. It just was not for me.
I was as much obsessed with this book as Sabrina was with Jake. IYKYK
Millennials look no further, this book was made for us. I truly think Lovering is the master of writing for us, every book she’s written has a way of being oh so relatable.
One night at a concert in East Williamsburg Molly falls head over heels for Jake Danner, lead singer in an up and coming indie band. Their relationship is full of intense love for one another yet it’s tragically toxic. A decade later they are no longer together but doesn’t mean they have forgotten about each other.
It’s a sexy suspense novel about the kind of addictive, obsessive love that keeps you coming back - a book about obsession, want and desire.
Oh and the women in this book were cruel and to be frank MEAN. I’m 100% certain that women and men alike act like this all over the world. Obsession is not a pretty colour.
Lastly this book touches on a few different genres, leaning more towards women’s fiction/ romance, than thriller.
I would call this more of a domestic drama than the thriller it is billed as, and it is definitely a slower burn than I was expecting. That being said, I did like this one very much and it is at times a heart breaking and gut punch of a read. I wished it had been more of a thriller as there was definitely the potential for it to be one though. The story is full of drama, the characters grew on me, and it has stuck with me long after I have read it. The audio is fantastic with three different narrators for Molly, Sabrina and Jake, so I definitely recommend listening to this one if you can.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the digital galley to review.
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the e-ARC!
This book was so unique. While I expected something with a lot of action and suspense, this ended up being more of a psychological drama. The story is told in past and present, weaving the story of instant love and also love grown tired, and I loved how both stories gave insight into the characters and gave breadcrumbs of the story along the way. I never knew where things were going, and I love a read that keeps me guessing! There were a lot of small twists along the way that kept me interested and kept me from totally guessing what would happen. I also found the characters to be fascinating and creepy! I liked how it played on the idea of never really knowing what someone is capable of doing.
It did have a slow start for me and it took me some time to figure out everyone's character. I also thought it was odd how the characters treated past events, that only happening a few years previously, as though they were so far-gone and irrelevant.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys thrillers and like a lot of twists!
Can’t Look Away is a novel about the choices in our pasts, and the paths that “could have been.” The author forms an interesting love triangle and a suspenseful plot, but I felt like the narrative fell a little flat.
