This was a different spin on the Neverland retelling and I was on the fence about the rating...
I liked that Peter was LGBT, and felt that the setting was brought to life off the page. I always enjoy a new version of a characters that we know and love from our childhood made to be more grown up in some ways. The darker retelling of this story is a major win for me!
I love Peter Pan stories (he was my first fictional love), so I was a little disappointed at first when it didn't read like a true retelling and more like a book with the essence of Peter Pan at it's heart. Still not a bad story. It was almost refreshing in a way where it wasn't the same story being told to us. I appreciated the LGBTQ+ aspects added into the plot. It's an interesting take on a story that has been told again and again.
3.5/5 stars
Thank you Netgalley like always
This book was very middle of the road for me, I liked the idea behind this story and what the plot could be, but I find it never went far enough with what it wanted to do and say. The characters while likable didn't feel like the originals characters in any meaningful way which as a fan of the original novel did effect my enjoyment.
It is not a bad book and I do believe many will enjoy it , but to me it is very middle of the road an not something I will go back to soon
One thing about me is that if it is a Peter Pan retelling, I'm going to be excited to read it. This did not disappoint. I especially enjoyed the queer storylines and, even though it hurt, the absence of lost boys. I loved how fast-paced it was and the character and world-building, and I am looking forward to reading the sequel.
I was intrigued by a new Peter Pan story, but this one never ended up connecting with me. One-hundred percent a case of me being the wrong reader
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for giving me access to the advanced copy of this book to read.
I really enjoyed this as an escapism to a magical realm and is the perfect read when you just want to get whisked away from reality.
It wasn’t mind blowing but it was an enjoyable read and I’d recommend!
I love fairy tale retellings. This is quite a dark and twisty adult version I enjoyed. A short quick read and glad to see the adventures will continue. Very like able characters. I received this copy free to review.
I just reviewed A Land of Never After: A Peter Pan Retelling by R.L. Davennor. #ALandofNeverAfterAPeterPanRetelling #NetGalley
This is sold as a Peter Pan retelling, but honestly it's more just inspired by the characters. There isn't really a common plot thread between Peter Pan and this book. From the description and title of the book, I genuinely thought this would be different, slightly disappointed.
This was loosely based on Peter Pan. I say "loosely based" because while a large part of the story takes places in Neverland and some of the characters are the same, the story itself is very different. All of Neverland is cursed, there are monsters everywhere and death is necessary to survive (so there is lots of violence). After Wendy wanders into Neverland she learns of the curse amongst other things.
It want's bad, but don't say its a 'retelling'
What if Neverland isn't as magical and wonderful you think it would be ?!
What an interesting concept, twisting the original Peter Pan story into a darker and twisted version with LGBTQ+ rep as well.
I really like the the world building, the characters, the creepy vibes and the mysterious curse with monsters in this story. Definitely different compare to other Peter Pan retelling I've read before.
The only wish I have for this book is the length of the story. I wish it was longer so the readers could get to know about the characters deeper.
Near the ending, things also got quite a bit rushed.
Overall, this is a unique Peter Pan retelling. I'm satisfied with how it ends, the epilogue tells that the journey is far from over and will continue.
I'm curious to know what happen in the next book!
Actual rating: 3.5⭐

nice read, love a peter pan retelling.
- thanks to netgalley and the publisher for providing me with the ARC in exchange for an early review.
Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this book.
This was a quick, easy read with an interesting twist on your typical Peter Pan story. I would have liked a little more development but overall pretty enjoyable, and I will look into reading the next one!
I really enjoyed this retelling of Peter Pan. It had all of the magical aspacts you want from a Peter Pan retelling, while also being a more up to date story (making it refreshing to other retellings I have read)! I would like if it was longer however, as it feels quite rushed and not as developed.
A Land of Never After is a dark and twisted retelling of Peter Pan.
I have to say thar Peter Pan was one of my favorite Disney films as a child, but I had never thought to look for a Peter Pan retelling.
I was completely hooked from the beginning and couldn't stop reading it. Also! I did like how the author adds dark twists to the characters and places. Neverland takes on a whole new meaning...a dark place full of monsters and secrets. I got really hooked to the action, curses and secrets. Fans of Peter Pan and Hook will surely enjoy this one.
I have also to say that I loved the song suggestions at the beginning of each chapter!
Peter Pan like you've never read it before!
Wendy has only ever dreamed of the sea. When she leaves the orphanage in search of a ship to take her away, she finds a thief instead. Running after him in an attempt to get her belongings back, she ends up trapped in Neverland, a place where everything is dying and people must kill to survive. A curse is responsible for the dreadful fate of the place, and Wendy learns that she's the key to breaking it. But who to trust? Who to believe? And how will she ever escape?
I absolutely love retellings, and this one had everything for me to enjoy. It was a fast-paced, quick-read with LGBTQ+ representation and a cunning, bold main character. I really liked the book, following Wendy on her dark and surprising journey was really entertaining. It was also really nice to meet the usual Peter Pan characters throughout the story and I loved how the author turned the tale around with her own plot. It was surprising, original and magical. The writing was quite smart and addictive and the descriptions of the world beautiful. I loved the revelations about Wendy's past and Peter's plan, as well as the feud between the pirates and Peter. The characters were interesting and well-built, not good nor bad, but all quite fascinating. It was full of action, surprises, magic, riddles and friendship and a really good read. I did not expect this ending and it had me sitting on the edge of my seat in anticipation, which I absolutely loved. I cannot wait to read the sequel that promises to be just as entertaining!
I highly recommend if you like fairytale retellings, with a darker twist!

This book was a decent retelling of Peter Pan, yet at the same time I felt that it was slightly unoriginal and was similar in many ways to other retellings I have read. That being said, if someone had never read another Peter Pan retelling, this would be a solid, fresh read.
This is a dark and creepy Peter Pan retelling and it was.. messy. It was short, and really quick. So much information and back and forth in such a short amount of time. The main character we follow is Wendy, who was annoying and unbearable. The plot was a mashup of pirates of the Caribbean with a slight sprinkling of Peter Pan. It didn’t feel original. It was messy, too convenient, nonsensical- and it wasn’t that dark, in my opinion; I was hoping for much more. The writing was nothing special, either. I wanted to put this book down multiple times throughout, but was intrigued enough to see it through. 1 star.
I received this book for free for an honest review from netgalley #netgalley
Best Peter pan retale I've read. It flew off the page.
Listen...if you tell me that this is a dark Peter Pan retelling meets Pirates of the Caribbean, you have my heart instantly! I've read plenty of Peter Pan retellings but this one has definitely been one of my favourites. It's a short read, which doesn't leave much room for character development, but I loved what the author has done in the span of so little pages. I need more! 5/5 stars.
This was an enjoyable read. Keeping in mind it’s about 200 pages or so… it’s a good book. Well-written and well-paced. I wish there had been more! I wanted to see the characters developed more, it felt like that author relied a bit too much on the original Peter Pan and failed to give their characters true personalities and motivations. Wendy’s character in particular should have been better developed. I found myself irritated by the Wendy character, which is the purpose of her character, but so much so I would skip around her parts. This was a good book for ~200 pages but it could’ve been fantastic if it had been like 350 or 400 pages instead and better developed.
