This was a really great read! I'm really enjoying Amanda Stevens trilogies with Harlequin Intrigue, and this was the great start of a new one, and I'm excited to see how everything plays out! In the last one, the connection was in the town that it was set, the 2nd book's mystery didn't have much to do with the overarching mystery, but in this case, book two is going to deal with the events of this one and I can't wait!
Thea and Jake were in a relationship, one that ended when he got a promotion that required him to move. So there were some pretty interesting dynamics there-especially since this case is eerily similar to the abduction of Thea's twin, Maya.
It was interesting investigating this case-because of the past and that this current abduction was from the same bedroom. The case did get taken over a bit by that cave, but that's going to be important, it was great to built it up in this book!
I really enjoyed who the bad guy was, I wasn't expecting that! But once we got that big suspicious piece, well, things came together, and everything was just so fast paced and it was done before I knew it! It was a fantastic ending!
Loved reading this book, and I can't wait to continue the series!
An FBI Special Agent dealing in cold cases is called back to her hometown when her mother is desperate after a second child disappears under some of the same eerie circumstances as twenty-eight years before when they lost Thea’s twin. Second chance romance and thrilling suspense from an already familiar author sounded just the thing.
After finishing up the last in a series from the author’s older series, I was almost gleeful when I came across this new release in a new series from her. Little Girl Gone is standalone in the modern day child disappearance and brings Thea back into contact with an estranged mother and her ex- partner at work and romance. She tries to put the past aside as they work to save this second missing child with the clock ticking since the disappearance from the same bedroom her twin sister Maya had 28 years before. Some of the same people are around Reggie, of course, and her newly released boyfriend from the time, a weirdo neighbor, Kylie’s abusive dad, and more, but also a set of bones turns up. Thea is on the trail and it is no longer cold and the danger is close.
There is the complication of Thea’s relationship with her mother, Reggie, and that was woven into the suspense particularly as Thea is starting to recall stuff from the older case now that the new case is being investigated and wants answers.
Thea and Jake had their careers get in their way when Jake took a promotion. They are professional, but uneasy at first. The spark is still there and they iron things out as they work with Jake’s team to find little Kylie. I enjoyed that the romance was in balance with the situation since a poor, scared child was out there missing and that had to be the priority, but there is still progress.
There were lagging moments, but for the most part- especially since the author really lavished the local scene with atmosphere, I enjoyed this one. It ended on a good note though there are unresolved bits about the older cold case that I imagine carries forward into the next book with a new case. Those who enjoy FBI romantic suspense settings and a thriller-tone should definitely try this one.
FBI Special Agent Thea Lamb returns to her hometown of Black Creek, Florida after a long absence and five-year estrangement from her mother, Reggie. Unfortunately, her reason for returning is devastating. The four-year old daughter of a woman for whom Reggie was providing safe haven was abducted from her bed. What makes this even more remarkable is that 28 years ago, Thea’s twin sister was abducted from the same bedroom. She was also four years old. Thea is not coming there officially despite the fact that her specialty is cold cases involving missing children. Her former partner and boyfriend, FBI Special Agent Jake Stillwell is leading the investigation. They separated when he left Washington DC for the promotion in Tallahassee and this will be their first time seeing each other.
I am a devoted fan of the author’s Graveyard Queen series, which is a completely different genre and I was intrigued enough to experience her storytelling in romantic suspense. Her mastery in creating atmosphere sets her apart from most other writers and was spectacularly at play in this story. The setting was almost like another character, adding to the mystery and suspense with the eerie woods surrounding the house and the creepy caves deep within those forests. Thea and Jake were interesting characters, both having troubled childhoods in addition to their own past relationship. I liked how well they worked together, not letting their feelings for each other cloud their judgment or interfere with the case.
I finished the story in a day, finding it hard to put it down. There were a host of suspects and I kind of figured out some of it but definitely not all. While the mystery was solved regarding the child abduction, there are lots more threads still needing to be unraveled. I’ll definitely be continuing the series because this story was just the start of something wonderful. I’m hooked!
Little Girl Gone introduces Amanda Stevens's Procedural Crime series, and yes, it is a procedural with some romance in the mix. That said, it is more procedural than romance, but that isn't a deal-breaker for me by any means. The suspense is good if a bit predictable, and the pacing is a little touch and go in some places. The characters are likable, and I was genuinely interested in learning the outcome of this case. As a first in the series, this story gives us an idea of what we'll be expecting, and I was sufficiently invested to check out whatever comes next.
4.5 Stars
Dark, intense and emotional, Amanda Stevens’ Little Girl Gone is a read in a single sitting tale guaranteed to keep readers guessing.
There is absolutely nothing that Special Agent Thea Lamb will not do to find a child that had gone missing – especially as this disappearance echoes a twenty-eight year old cold case: her twin sister’s abduction. Returning back to her hometown brings a whole host of painful memories for Thea – and the opportunity to work with her former partner, Jake Stillwell, with whom she has unfinished business…
Her twin sister’s disappearance has weighed heavily on Thea’s shoulders for twenty-eight years. Having spent a lifetime battling with guilt, sorrow and doubts, Thea had been unable to form a meaningful relationship. But could finding the answers to the questions that have plagued her for so long give her closure and the chance to lay old ghosts to rest and act upon her feelings for Jake?
Thea and Jake have sacrificed so much for their careers, but can they finally find the fulfillment in their personal lives that they’ve been craving? Or will disappointments and heartache continue to loom large in their future?
In Little Girl Gone, Amanda Stevens draws her readers into her story from the very beginning and keeps them on the edge of their seats and desperate to find out what is going to happen next until the final jaw-dropping twist.
With characters that leap off the pages, shocks and revelations aplenty and heartfelt and emotional romance, in Little Girl Gone, Amanda Stevens has delivered a top-notch romantic suspense tale readers will not want to miss.
If you're looking for romantic suspense that includes compelling cases and a second chance romance, this one definitely fits the bill. While the plot in general moved well, there were definitely some parts where there were lulls and some aspects that were predictable, but I still enjoyed the overall readd. The characters themselves really grew over the span of the story and became more dimensional as the story continued. The suspense element in the story was definitely what kept it going and kept it enjoyable.
I enjoyed this fast-paced crime novel, which kept me guessing. While the main mystery was solved I felt there was some unfinished business, so it was great to see that there will be a series of stand-alone titles with these characters.
This book had mystery, a little romance/sex, and was not overly graphic/gruesome, in my opinion.
Thank you for making me part of the blog tour for this title and for my copy!
Thea Lamb is a Cold Case Agent who never leaves a stone unturned. Her most recent case involves the abduction of an infant, but it also mirrors a case she herself was involved in when she was a young child. It has been twenty-eight years since her sister was abducted and Thea feels that the past and the present are connected. Thea will be working alongside FBI Special Agent Jake Stillwell.
As things start to evolve, Thea has more than a personal connection to the case so due to conflict has to stand on the sidelines. More than that, Thea and Jake have a history so that ratchets up the drama and intrigue involved when it comes to finding the misssing infant. More than that, perhaps Thea will find closure as to what could have happened to her sister.
What an excellent start to a new series! Exciting from beginning to end, this book was a one-sitting read. I am really interested in the next book, John Doe Cold Case, available now.
Many thanks to Harlequin Intrigue and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
A good mix of romance and suspense, well written and compelling.
There's a double mystery, one is solved in this book and the other one will be a constant in this series (or so I assume)
The pace is a bit uneven and alternates gripping moments to parts where it drags.
I rooted for the characters and wanted to know who-did-it
I want to read other books in this series.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I love the premise of this story but unfortunately, it let me down a bit in execution. I was instantly hooked on the idea of two little girls going missing from the same bedroom almost three decades apart and Stevens did a great job balancing the two stories and keeping us guessing the whole way through. Thea and Jake had good chemistry and I enjoyed the second chance romance element they brought to the story. I also liked that they did a lot of their investigating solo so we got a lot of suspense and action that switched between the two of them. With that said, a couple of things that happened to them seemed over the top and too much time was spent on those elements. I did appreciate that Stevens balanced the romance aspect of this story well with the mystery of what happened to Kylie and Maya. I never felt that the romance was taking away from them solving the crime and I was even surprised at how little romance was in this book. The ending of this book leaves a lot to be desired since there isn’t a resolution of all of the pieces to the puzzle but I feel a little better knowing that the second book in this series comes out next week. It follows different characters but I am hopefully that tendrils of this story will continue into that one.
I’m always up for a romantic suspense by a new-to-me author, and this one was a really good read. Second-chance romance is also a fave trope, so this one checked all of my boxes. It was engaging from the beginning, with several possible suspects and a well-thought-out, fast-paced plot. From the very first chapter to the very last chapter, I didn’t want to put it down. And with the hero and heroine both realizing their relationship fell apart the first time was not just one person’s fault, it felt like a more realistic resolution.
Looking forward to more from this author!
Thea Lamb, an FBI agent, returns to her hometown in Florida to help in the search of a missing child. The case reminds her very much of her twin sister’s kidnapping which happened 28 years ago. She never saw her sister again. Thea Lamb is determined to not let that happen again. She won’t let another family suffer.
Thea is going through many emotions with this case, including having to work with her former partner, Jake Stillwell. Things didn’t end well between them since her sister’s kidnapping has always been on her mind even all these years later.
This book is filled with so many twists and turns. Every few pages I was guessing different culprits. Since this case involves a missing child, it brings out all kinds of emotions from Thea. I could really feel her pain especially with the lack of closure in her sister’s disappearance so many years ago. I really liked Thea and was cheering for her to be able to live her life again.
The main story is solved in the pages of this book, but there are still some unanswered questions about a cold case. There are more books to come in this series and I’m looking forward to reading them. I really liked the author’s writing style and the mystery kept me thinking until the end.
FTC Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed a free Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Missing child always a scary subject for me, but never thought that this book would be so creepy and dark, it's not a long book so I kinda surprised that even though it's a short book it packed quite a punch.
It started with a child whose disappearance echoes a twenty-eight-year-old cold case. So it brings Special agent Thea Lamb back to her hometown to help find that little girl and hopefully find answers to that old cold case. From the beginning the setting is so gloomy and scary, add secrets and old memories and creepy things show up here and there, and then add plenty horrible hair-rising creepy suspects, yup it was a pretty dark read. There's also second chance romance in this book between Thea and Jake, a welcoming breather from all those scary stuff, it brings a sweetness and warmness in this book.
So yeah, great gripping mystery and suspense story, cute romance, loveable main characters, although I felt a bit dissapointed when I got unanswered questions (I didn't now that this is a series), I still like it a lot and I highly recommend this book for everyone who's looking for a good page-turner fast-paced suspense read.
I was in the mood for something quick to read so I decided to pick this book up.
Little Girl Lost was so good. I just didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed the story very much.
I do recommend it.
Thea is a special agent working on a case that is oddly similar to her twins sister's disappearance abduction case. She'll be working with Jake to figure out more about this case that also seems to be bring up some hurt and memories of the past.
I love mystery books and this was a pretty great one. I really enjoyed following along as she tried to figure out who was behind this and retrieve the child before who knows what happen. I loved that there was enough mystery suspicion to keep the readers guessing and assuming who the person would be because when it came to her sister it was assumed to be her mother but was never proven and the person behind this was never caught and the case ran cold so now with this happening again theres suspicion all around. I loved seeing how more dangerous things were also turning as they were getting closer to figuring out who was behind this, it really kept me hooked. Overall great book I really enjoyed it.
Special agent Thea Lamb is investigating a missing child case that eerily echoes the twenty-eight-year-old cold case of her twin sister's abduction. Working with her former partner Jake Stillwell, Thea must overcome the torment of the past to solve the present case, and maybe find a way to the future.
From the start, Thea's hometown is full of creepy characters. There is an attempt on her and her mother's life, a poisoning, and weird carvings featuring little girls meant to symbolize Thea and her twin Maya when they were four. Thea and Jake used to be a couple years before, and an attraction remains. It doesn't interfere with the case, however. Jake questions Thea about her memories and what she saw of the car accident that put her mother in the hospital and tries to get her impression of her hometown as it currently is. Though she isn't on the case herself, Thea questions others as if she is.
We do eventually learn the truth behind the current kidnapping, and Thea and Jake admit they still have feelings for each other. Their relationship status feels unfinished by the end of the book, making me hope there's another book featuring the two of them in the future. They work well together in an investigation sense, and I would love to see how their romantic relationship works in the long run.
The first book in the new series is a good blend of suspense and second chance romance. Thea is an FBI agent who works on cold cases involving children. As the story opens, she is headed back to her hometown in Florida to be with her estranged mother, who finds herself at the center of another missing child mystery. Twenty-eight years earlier, Thea's twin sister Maya disappeared from their bedroom without a trace. That disappearance undoubtedly influenced Thea's choice of a career. Now another child has disappeared from the same house and the same room. While she supports her mother, Reggie, Thea also questions what happened in both cases.
Jake heads the FBI unit CARD (Child Abduction Rapid Deployment) tasked with finding the missing Kylie. His awareness of the chances of success with each passing hour keeps his determination to succeed fueled. He will take whatever help is offered.
Thea and Jake have a history together. They were a couple while both worked for the FBI in DC until Jake received the promotion that sent him to Florida. A bit of pride and some lack of communication pulled them apart, but neither had forgotten the other. Both are dedicated to their careers, but their old feelings don't take long to resurface. I liked their realism, trying to keep things professional while working on the case and finding the time to reconnect. I loved the ending, as they realized that the blame for their split belonged to them both. I wasn't too surprised at the resolution.
The suspense of the story kept me hooked from beginning to end. The similarity of the abductions of Maya and Kylie was especially intriguing, considering the time difference between them. One common factor was Reggie, and Thea's memories stir up questions she wants answered. Meanwhile, Reggie's boyfriend from during that time was recently released from prison and appears to have a grudge against her. Add in a creepy neighbor, an odd doll shop owner, and some bones found in a cave, and there are plenty of suspects to go around. The final confrontation was a nail-biter. The motivation behind the kidnapping was heartbreaking, but I had little sympathy for the kidnapper. I loved seeing Thea's confidence in standing up to the kidnapper and seeing Jake come through as backup at just the right time. While one mystery was solved, there are still unanswered questions about Maya's disappearance. I'm looking forward to learning more and hopefully getting a good result.
The relationship between Thea and Reggie is also a big part of the book. The tension is palpable as Thea's memories make her question things about her mother. While I ached for Reggie, I also had questions about her past actions. Thea and Reggie's interactions have been strained for many years, starting after Maya's disappearance and worsening as the years went on. Reggie has changed her life since then, and those changes seem to improve their ability to talk to one another. Things have improved between them by the end of the book, though questions remain.
Amanda Stevens brings us a riveting mystery in the first book in her new Procedural Crime series which features Thea Lamb, an investigator with the FBI who is coming home to help investigate a missing child abduction. Thea is not on the job but can not resist trying to figure out why this abduction is the same as what happened to her sister twenty-eight years ago. The details are so exact, that it is hard not to think the same person is responsible. The only thing Thea is having a hard time with, is that the agent assigned to the case is her ex-partner and lover, Jake Stillwell. Can Thea keep her focus on the case and work with Jake at the same time?
I loved this novel. It had all the right ingredients for a crime mystery. Intrigue, racing against the clock, clues from the past and a bonus of the tension between Thea and Jake and their past relationship. The novel does not focus entirely on their romance, but on the crime at hand which I found refreshing. I enjoyed following the clues, and the ending was a surprise. All in all, a great mystery with a touch of romance. My thanks to Harlequin Publishing for an advanced readers copy in exchange for my unbiased review.
This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the first book in the Procedural Crime series. I liked parts of this book a lot, but their was parts of this book that I found boring and slow moving. The ending of this book was my favorite part of this book. The characters I did not love, but they made me warm up to them by the end of the book. Most of the twists and turns in this book I saw coming. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Harlequin Intrigue) or author (Amanda Stevens) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
