I enjoyed this book. The structure of this book is so disjointed. This book is a good memoir but just not written in a way that I could fully enjoy it
I an unable to review this title, as it was archived before I had a chance to download and read it. This feedback is only to stop this title from adversely affecting my netgalley feedback rate. If in the future I have the opportunity to read this title, I will post a proper review here.
I couldn't get into this one unfortunately. The stories seemed to jump about somewhat randomly, especially in the opening. We would jump from a current medical event to art and then back and then to other random things. I just couldn't follow it and the style was annoying me.
My thanks to NetGalley and Cameron Publicity for a copy of “ A Doctor For All Seasons “ for an honest review.
I really enjoy reading memoirs , in particular film based ones ,so this should have been the perfect book for me.
Unfortunately, as entertaining as some of the stories were, I wasn’t a fan of the style of writing.
I love a good “ name drop” but these seemed to be shoe horned in , and at times, for me, Dr Gayner came over as being somewhat pompous.!
An ok read but not as good as I’d hoped for
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me this arc
I really enjoyed hearing about the different sets and stars he worked with over the decades he’s been doing the job.
It was a bit hard to keep focused on at times but good nonetheless.
A fascinating look behind the scenes and it was such an insight into all things medical. In a career spanning five decades, Dr John Gayner acted as a medical adviser on dozens of TV and film sets. This led to a collection of stories that entertain and show what went into the making of many well-known films. This is an engrossing read for fans of This is Going to Hurt and When Breath Becomes Air.
My thanks to #NetGalley and #SilverwoodBooks for the opportunity to review this book.
If you love tabloid gossip about the stars of stage and screen you will love this book.
I was hooked from the first page and read it in two days along with its companion Google images putting faces to names.
What an amazing insight into a niche job being a medical advisor to the entertainment industry.
I would highly recommend.
An intriguing memoir that explains how a swollen lip leads to million-dollar compensation.
Everybody wants once in a while to get the feel of being connected to the world of celebrities. John Gayner provides such an opportunity in his exclusive story 'A Doctor for All Seasons.' The book depicts the author's life as a series of disclosing and simultaneously respectful glances into the film industry. By chance, a doctor who ran his London practice could become a representative of film insurers and, in such a capacity, got access to celebrities like Sean Connery, Angelina Jolie, and Paul Scofield. Without specifics, the author explains the mechanics behind film insurance policies that ensure all participants are safe and shooting will be finished in time, despite any circumstances. Due to his extended personal and professional connections, the author portrays political figures that defined British politics not long ago, such as Lord Whitelaw.
Juggling - and sometimes missing - the permittable and the vulgar constitutes the negative side of the book. Losing the balance is highly evident at the beginning that looks somehow messy, as though the author couldn't know from where to start and what tone to choose. So his initial choice was one of the yellow press, with sensation as the primary focus. Luckily for a reader, the narrative's tone changes, gaining respectfulness and, in some instances, avoiding the names of the people involved.
The book is a finely honed, entertaining memoir, suitable for the peaceful evening after the hard workday, with a cup of English tea for additional comfort. I'd recommend the book to people eager to delve into the unknown details about the film industry as a whole and some celebrities in particular.
I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
After Dr John Gaynor qualified as a GP he worked for film insurers, production companies and actors. Some of his encounters, humorous and otherwise are included in this book.
I’m not a follower of the stars so a lot of the names didn’t mean anything to me but I still enjoyed the anecdotes and learning how accidents can happen on set. Reading about his early days in medicine was more my cup of tea.
I really enjoyed the section of signed photos from the author’s private collection. My favourite was the one of John Cleese and what an impressive pair of legs he has!
This was a very easy read, humorous at times and the perfect read for fans of celebrities and/or the screen.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a free digital copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Wasn't as interesting as I'd hoped. There were many celebs author worked with, so there's that.
Thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free, it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
I have mixed feelings about this book. Partially my own fault for holding expectations that it was going to be more autobiographical with regards to the author's medical experiences rather than the entertainment side of life.
At first I thought the book was aimed at his peers and made mention of consultants and other private Harley Street medical professionals that I have never heard of but would mean something to people at the top end of the medical world.
Then we got into the entertainment side and it felt more akin to someone name dropping all the famous people that they had met and about how clever the author was.
I twice nearly gave up and moved on, but there was always a crumb that kept me coming back and, by the end of it I realised that I had enjoyed it and it was a genuinely interesting read.
When, very near the end of the book, the author stated that (paraphrasing) he could not comment on patients' individual circumstances, unless they had been revealed elsewhere, it sort of made the whole book retrospectively better. Had this comment been front and centre at the start of the book, I would probably had a far easier interaction with it.
I would also note that each anecdote was quite short, so it is a good book to jump into when you have a few minutes here and there to read.
An interesting collection of anecdotes but not much more than that. Take it for what it is and enjoy these insights into the medical dealings of the rich and famous.
I've become quite a fan of the Dr memoir genre, especially as the incredible work they do under unimaginable pressures is so often dismissed by the government but this book was, for me, an awful read.
The short chapters and memories seemed nothing more than an excuse to name drop and reinforced just how opposed to private health care I am.
Not my usual genre of book but I thoroughly enjoyed it! A well written book that would be excellent for a Book Club, therefore I’ve suggested it to mine.
I was really excited to read this one, but i really didn’t vibe with the writing style which was unfortunate. I loved hearing about the inside gossip into celebrities lives and i found the medical side of things super interesting. I love medical memoirs books, i’m just not sure if the writing style of this one is for me.
Captivating memoir of a Doctor in GB who handles many cases for the movie industry. His various stories of the actors were so very interesting and humorous. Interesting right to the end.
A Doctor For All Seasons by Dr John Gayner is an anecdote filled account of his medical career, from his early training days to the years he spent as a doctor to celebrities and sports stars around the globe. As a nurse, you would think the last thing I would want to read about is other nurses, doctors or anything healthcare, however, I do enjoy the genre.
The book is quite fast-paced, it jumps from story to story quite quickly. The stories keep you intrigued and the content is good, it just falls a little short on the more "behind the scenes" aspect that is given in the description. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
3.5/5.
A Doctor for All Seasons is an account of the medical career of Dr. John Gayner who served as a medical advisor on film sets and TV. I found his memoir fascinating and really interesting as the doctor flew around the world treating very famous people. What a life! The stories he could tell!
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
It was not quite what I expected. It started from a place of privilege and never left. Where I thought it was going to be on aspects more 'factual and technical' it just seemed to be a constant list of "...the famous people I have met..." and I soon got bored with the grandiose attitude. Sorry.
I really enjoyed this book. I admit it was quite difficult to read as the chapters aren't in any particular order, but what a life Dr Gayner has lead! Before he retired in 2019, his job was a medical doctor on film and stage sets and the book is all about famous people he has treated and tales from his time doing this job.
There are famous namous in every page and I was intrigued to keep reading to see how many different people I had heard of! He doesn't ever talk about people's medical conditions who have not already been reported in the media and this shows what a remarkable man he is.
The life of this man must have been thrilling during his career, flying all over the world and meeting every famous name you could think of! What a life! I recommend this to anybody interested in biographies and celebrities!
