No one must know her true identity—especially not tschandsome earl who’s employed her.
On the most horrifying night of her life, Charlotte Robinson discovers the murdered body of the mysterious woman who's engaged her as a companion at a remote Cornish manor house. Then, in her bedchamber, Charlotte finds the hidden note from the dead woman that tells her to flee, to change her name, to not trust anyone or she, too, will be killed. Along with the note is her employer's journal. She speedily packs a valise, the money she's saved, and the dead woman's journal and sets off in the dark of night. She eventually arrives in London using the name Caroline Rutherford and manages to secure a position as a companion to the youngest sister of the Earl of Devere.
London's most sought-after bachelor, Devere has never met the woman with whom he wants to be shackled, but for reasons he cannot understand, he becomes obsessed with his sister's companion, the quiet Caroline Rutherford, a woman of mystery. So many things about her don't add up, but nothing he says or does will loosen her tongue—not even his stolen kisses which he knows she enjoys as much as he.
A murder plot which is just the right twist and unique love affair obsession are the twists and turns of this romance.
Cheryl Bolen has written a book which is amazing in it's own right.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affected my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
This story had my attention from start to finish. Charlotte Robinson ran for her life when she found her employer and friend murdered. She had with her a journal that might tell who the murderer was. Arriving in London, she changed her name, and found employment as companion to the young sister of Henry Beresford, Earl of Devere. Is she safe now?
Engaging and entertaining, this is a romance adventure and a mystery. Caroline (Charlotte), Devere, and Harriet are fantastic characters. Alex can be added to that list as well. Harriet is delightful, but a bit reckless. She loves animals, even mice. Caroline is an immediate positive influence on her. The attraction between Devere and Caroline is almost immediate. He finds her interesting and intelligent, and they have much in common, including politics. However, he feels she is hiding something. She does have quite a secret. Devere is intelligent, strong, protective, and compassionate. The perfect hero. He proves it when trouble finds them. Murder, blackmail, burglary, kidnapping, rescue and romance make this one hard to put down. The Beresford family certainly lead exciting lives. I look forward to reading Harriet’s story.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
TERRIFIC!!! My Lord Protector by Cheryl Bolen is book 2 in The Beresford Adventures series. This is my first book that I have read of Cheryl’s but it won’t be the last. It really was terrific. Though in a series this book can be read as a standalone. I found this book to be very well written and the story oh so original. I love the mystery of it all and the characters were so very charming. Adding all the little animals was just to too creative. This story has a women who need to create a new identity, a earl who needs a companion for his sister, a sister who loves all animals, death, murder, loss, grief, kidnapping, rescue, a mysterious journal, treating someone like family, a good friend, politics, finding out a secret and falling in love. I am highly recommending you read this book. You will not be disappointed!!!

Devere has one more sister to marry off, unfortunately, she hasn’t made the best decisions. He needs a companion for her, someone to keep her in line. Charlotte Robinson has been a paid companion to a Mrs. Wyndham for years. Unfortunately, Mrs. Wyndham has made her final mistake-one that may cost Charlotte her life.
Arriving in London and needing employment, she becomes a companion/chaperone for one Lady Harriett. The two form a quick friendship and bond. Devere takes notice of that and more. As Charlotte’s secrets begin to find her, the story becomes a very enjoyable fast paced mystery and love story.
I was surprised at how rivetting I found this story. It was very encompassing for the reader. I was able to immerse myself into the story.
The heroine wakes up to a strange sound. As she rushes to her employer's room, she sees a dark, male shaped figure throw open the front door and run out. The heroine continues on to her employer's room, but finds her dead, her entire room and dressing room ransacked. The heroine recalls a package that her employer had given her recently. The heroine had been her companion for about a year and her employer treated her as family. The heroine opens the package, reads the letter which says to run as far as she can. The heroine packs up and runs off into the night, to London. She arrives at her old nurse's employment agency and the nurses sister comes up with an entire new identity with references for her. She gets a job as a companion to an earl's sister. On the first day, she is led to a room on the family floor and told that she will be treated as family. She feels lucky to have a position similar to the last where she was treated as a valued human being.
I felt that this story was very accurate in regard to how some families acted. Normally, there are mean, cheap employers and people get caught and arrested for something they didn't do. But this story was different. I really enjoyed how the descriptions made me feel that I was right next to the heroine as she experienced all of her actions. The characters develop in the story and the supporting characters make sense. I did not think there were any loose string story lines. I give this book 5 stars and recommend reading.
Miss Charlotte Robinson discovers her employer murdered and finds she must run for her life. A new identity is the only way to survive. Our heroine is an intelligent woman, but she needs the help of a friend.
The Earl of Devere needs help to control his youngest sister during her first season. The companion he hires fits into his family immediately. Our hero enjoys the political side of his duties and is happy that the females in his household are taking an interest.
This sweet historical romance is a lot of fun with great characters. There is a murder/mystery to solve and secrets to hide.
Although this is part of a series, you can easily read it on it's own.
Great fun.
Intrigue and romance unlooked for______3.5
Murder, a young woman’s rapid flight from the scene, intrigue and romance! Oh, and a handsome, generous Earl, who though proper, is stymied by his sister’s new companion.
Henry Beresford, the Sixth Earl of Devere, hires Caroline Rutherford, really Charlotte Robinson, to guide his rather wilful sister through the traps of society. Lady Harriett doesn’t quite understand the ramifications when she bends the rules.
Charlotte had been the companion of a kindly woman, Mrs Betsy Wyndham, in the remote parts of Devon. Disturbed one night by a strange noise, Charlotte finds her employer lying on the floor dead. Charlotte opens a box containing written instructions about what to do if anything should happen to her employer. What Charlotte doesn’t know is that Mrs Wyndham had in reality been a famous courtesan. The box she’d handed over to Charlotte included damning information about a nobleman. Now Charlotte is in danger.
Through friends Charlotte is able to secure employment with Lord Devere. Charlotte or rather Caroline, has secrets though that puts the whole Devere family at risk. As life with the Deveres proceeds Caroline, finds herself in familiar situations that she must be careful about, lest her identity be revealed.
When foul play might comes calling on his household, Devere finds himself not only concerned, but attracted to his sister’s interesting companion. How to protect Caroline without compromising her?
All this makes for a wonderful plot. Unfortunately I found the delivery of the various lines between the two major proponents at times a tad flat. Despite this an enjoyable read.
I was rather intrigued by the political conversations of the time that Caroline took part in and loved the background that as Charlotte has to makes her equal to the task.

My Lord Protector is a delightful, page turning ‘who dun it’ romance. The pace is quick with Devere and Charlotte/Carolyn having an almost instant connection. Carolyn is frightened but does not want to cause any more problems for her charge, Harriett, Devere’s sister as the tale progresses and danger comes. Devere realizes there is something a bit off about Carolyn’s story, but falls for her anyway.
Harriet is charming as she matures into a woman. Yet, Carolyn gives Devere credit for the raising of his sister as she grows into herself. These two women exemplify strength, character and loyalty. Devere and his friends play a good opposite to these two ladies.
If you have not read a Cheryl Bolen book, now is the time to start with the Beresford Adventures. Lady Harriett appears to be next in line for her romance with another romantic journey. Looking forward to it!
Charlotte Robinson flees for her life when she discovers the woman who she has been a paid companion to, has been murdered. She finds a hidden note from the woman, telling her to change her name and to hide any trace of her existence, knowing that her life is in danger for having been associated with her. She leaves Cornwell, taking with her the woman’s journal and sets off for London where she secures a a position as a companion to the youngest sister of the Earl of Devere. When Devere meets Caroline, he begins to wonder what her real story is. Together they find themselves trying to uncover the murder, whilst fighting the attraction that blazes between them.
Two engaging people, who together make for a great team. Charlotte is an intelligent woman and together with Devere’s integrity and respect for her, they share a lovely romance. Whilst part of a series, this book can be read as a standalone.

Charlotte Robinson finds her employer dead. A former courtesan, Betsy Wyndham leaves a journal in Charlotte's safekeeping. Unfortunately it becomes a death warrant for Charlotte. Fleeing to London, Charlotte has help from Miss Fletcher of Miss Fletcher's Domestic Assistance Agency for Discriminating Employers. Changing her name to Caroline Rutherford, she is hired by the Earl of Devere as his sister's companion. Under his protection she feels safe, until someone upends her room looking for the journal. Only one man stands between her and a murderer, Devere. This book flew by so fast. Devere is one sweet,
hot hero!

This is the second book in the series & it’s very easily read on its own. I love a romance with a mystery & this book certainly ticked the box. I loved Charlotte / Caroline who was intelligent, sensible & thoroughly disliked lying. I also love Devere who fell for Caroline on their first meeting, he was honourable & also non judgemental. The chemistry between the pair simmered & then sizzled plus they liked & respected each other whilst falling in love. I was drawn in from page one & at times held breathless until the final page was turned. A very well written book, which had me engrossed from cover to cover. I look forward to Harriet’s story
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This book was a great addition to the series. I am looking forward to reading more books in The Beresford Adventures. I liked the characters and even the side characters. I think Devere's youngest sister, Harriett will have an entertaining. There was no sex scenes in the book, just hints at it. Overall a great romantic mystery with a happy ending.

"My Lord Protector" by Cheryl Bolen
A Fun Regency Mystery-Romance Tale
I truly enjoyed my time within this story. It lived up to my expectations. It is a clean romance with a hint of sizzle. Happy Reading ! !
This book will hook you from the first page! Even as Charlotte has to take on a new identity, in reality that is when she finds who she really is. Of course, Devere is there to protect her, even if he doesn't understand why he feels the need in the beginning. This is a sweet mystery romance I would recommend to anyone looking for an escape from reality for a bit.

An interesting read. Charlotte's employer is murdered. She reads the letter left by her friend and realises that she's in danger. Charlotte changes her name and heads for London. She becomes the companion and chaperone for a young debutante and is fascinated by the brother. He is the brother of the first books heroine.
Mostly kisses until the end,

A mystery, secret identity, romance, and London society all in one. This book was surprisingly great!
This book had a fairly fast pace and kept me hooked. Why not start off the book with fleeing a murder scene and assuming another identity. Blending in mentoring a younger girl navigate society and suitors only serves as cover for so long.
I loved all of the characters in this book from Charlotte's helpful nature and intelligence, Lord Devere's bravery, and Harriet's innocence and love of furry creatures.
I liked that this book was more focused on the mystery part than the romance, it just made the romance part an added bonus.
I read this book in one day since I had a hard time putting it down. I'm can't wait to read more books in this series!
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me a digital copy of this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
From the opening pages of this suspenseful romance, I was kept on tenterhooks as Charlotte runs for her life. Finding a certain amount of anonymity in London, she changes her name to Caroline and takes on a new post as a companion to the lively and unconventional sister of the Earl of Devere. She is treated as one of the family and made to feel welcome, but it comes at a price as Caroline has to dissemble and hide her origins. Nevertheless, being an astute man, Devere begins to question Caroline's story, but that does not stop him from being deeply attracted to her. When danger is brought to his doorstep and Caroline admits to the truth of the matter, he loses no time in helping her to uncover the facts. I love Devere's character, his charm, and generosity to the females in his life, as well as his admiration of Caroline and her enquiring mind. This well-written novel is a standalone and comes to a successful conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley, and this is my honest and voluntary review.
