This book was very well written and well detailed but I couldn't get into it as much as I tried. For someone who loves this genre, you would love this book!

was thoroughly impressed with the characters and the writing style. I loved the balance between modern world and old world! THIS WAS PERFECT. While I found the ending to be a fitting conclusion to the trilogy, I confess I hadn’t expected it to end quite the way it did

An enjoyable set of books, but I didn’t connect enough to find them anything too memorable or interesting, I did like the plot and world but thought the characters let it down.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

This trilogy consists of The shadow rises, The shadow reigns & The shadow falls. It is up to the witch hunters to stop the witches & the dark magic that threatens the world before everything is lost. Hunter Astley is tasked by the council to stop the Shadow Witch as she wants to destroy everything that he holds dear. But can he stop her before it is too late? Hunter is about to find out that he has magical powers that will see him having to make some hard choices. Who will win at the end of it all good or evil? A great read. I was lucky enough to receive a copy via Netgalley & the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

At the first glance , this book made me think it would definitely fall under the same old troupe, but it was just unexpected and brilliant with all new story and characters. The protagonist stands apart. It was a thrilling experience on the whole to read the book. Would recommend it to all the pnr fans.

Interesting premise, good execution, great characterisation. I appreciated the fact that the MC is not a brainless killer of witches and that the line between witch and hunter is a fine and nuanced one. That said, I had some personal issues with this – the same issues I’ve had with things like the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. It would not be fair to go into them here and any offense I took was unintentional on the author’s part. I could have chosen to stop reading and I was enjoying the series enough that I didn’t, so that’s on me. An ambivalent 3 stars from me and I urge you to check out other reviews.

(More accurately, it's 4.5 stars.)

James “Hunter” Astley is one in a long line of covert witch-hunters (he’s the seventh generation, to be more precise) working for the secret Malleus Maleficarum Council that oversees the enforcement of anti-magic laws in place since times forgotten. During his holidays in Venise, he discovers an attempted human sacrifice; his quick intervention results in killing the witches involved, but he’s able to save the victim, a strikingly pretty young Englishwoman, who upon their return to England promptly wants to join the ranks of the witch-hunters. Hunter remains reluctant, but soon changes his mind because, a) the young woman turns out to be almost a natural, and b) a new threat is ominously looming in the near future: the rise of an all-powerful Shadow Witch.

I’m a real sucker for witches, wizards, magic, witchcraft of any kind and nature. What I forgot (and was reminded of rather quickly) was that I preferred WITCHES to their opponents. Meaning that a priori this trilogy wasn’t meant for me (note to myself: read the book description; second note to myself: trust your instinct, however, and always be ready for a priori assumptions to be proven wrong). And yet… what a ride! Great plot, great world-building, exactly what the doctor ordered, so to say.

Which is strange because the first book didn’t draw me in immediately. I found there was a bit too much telling vs. showing, and the writing was a bit off—too long sentences only separated by commas gave the whole a certain breathlessness that nothing in the plot could have justified (full stops would have been a welcome change). Also, the frequent use of ‘that’ in relative clauses when referring to persons was off-putting—the writing was otherwise rather literary, so that colloquial use of ‘that’ struck me as out of place.

But with book 2, pace, tension, and suspense increased, plot-wise, and I completely forgot about these quibbles as well as about my initial apprehension re. witch-hunters, and I got swept away by the relentless flow. There were twists and turns aplenty, one foreseeable (and even hoped-for as far as I’m concerned, but hush… I won’t give you the details so as not to spoil your reading pleasure), many others so unexpected that I was flabbergasted (on a good way). What I appreciated above all was that from a classic “good guys vs. bad guys” story, the trilogy evolved into something more balanced, less Manichean. The good guys also had a dark side, the bad guys a soft spot. Didn’t see that coming, and it really made me change my mind completely. So, in one word, after a bumpy start, this turned out a perfectly good and entertaining read.

would like to thank netgalley and the publishers for letting me read this book

witches and witch hunters this is the story of hunter and his battle with the shadow witch, three books in one

as one book finishes so the other one continues with the storyline and as they progress the story gets better and better....there are an abundant amount of characters, some we lose on the way but its the final conflict that will grab you at the end..

its a story of love and betrayals with a dose of murder, well worth a read

It's a compelling and entertaining fantasy series. There's betrayal, loyalties, strong emotions and plenty of twists.
I liked the world building and found the plot gripping.
The characters were interesting but I found the women in the story a bit underdeveloped.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

I liked this not as much as others in this genre but I did like it.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an eARC of this book as it is a great book I think to read and I am trying to read a book a day this year.

I think the characters are very well thought out and I enjoyed the progress of the main character and enjoyed the book thoughrally while reading it but I felt a disconnect between myself and the story so I didn't quite energy myself into my book.
