The Megan Carpenter series has been and continues to be a decent police procedural, although I’ve been less enthralled with books 3&4 than the first two. Megan has a violent backstory and the reader is given glimpses into it. But for a true sense of understanding, this should not be read as a stand-alone. This is a series best read in order.
This time, Megan is called out at 2 AM for a missing person report on a mother and child. The husband is the one to call it in, but turns out the parents are separated and have a history of domestic violence. And, oh, he’s squirrelly as all get out. And the more I learned about him, the more I wanted him to be guilty, the same as Megan.
The book does a good job of keeping the reader in suspense and moving along at a brisk pace. I liked that Olsen allowed Megan to be fixated on a single suspect, which so often happens with real policing. I would have been the same. The ending wasn’t a surprise, because any good mystery reader expects a twist at the end.
Both Megan and Ronnie are well written characters. It’s been especially fun to see how they are bonding as partners. I was less interested in the bad guys, who took on cliched qualities.
Once again, I fault the publisher for giving away too much in the synopsis and recommend going into this one blind.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.
This is book 4 of the fabulous Detective Megan Carpenter series and just Keeps getting better. I had a really hard time putting my Kindle down to do my Adult responsibilities.
This book is perfection.
I loved the emotions this book puts the reader through.
This installment of Megan Carpenter, a deputy, somewhat conflicted woman, and admitted murderer was very good. Megan and her partner, Ronnie are trying to find the missing wife and daughter of a man who is (allegedly) rich in monetary means but poor in moral and pretty much every other way.
The characters were well-written and the plot realistic. At least Megan never fought off a group of heavily armed attackers with her bare hands like the protagonists in a few of my recent reads. I thought it ended well, with a few twists but not the ones I have come to expect.
I had read at least one of the series before, but it was a while ago and I didn't remember any details. She repeats (sometimes too many times) some of her back story, so you don't have to read them in order. That is always preferred, but in this case it is not absolutely necessary.
This is book 4 of the fabulous Detective Megan Carpenter series and just devoured it. This is a series that is so compulsive and it has become better and better with each book it’s a thrilling read that kept me guessing throughout and the pace just never let up.
I think what is special about the series is that with each read we come to know more about Megan and her horrific past and how she is dealing with all that life had thrown at her, I have found myself really rooting for her more and more. The other characters are all so well written and we also get to know more about them which I really thought added to the my enjoyment of the book and I especially like Ronnie who is become a favourite of mine.
So an exceptional read with a fantastic plot and characters, I loved the book and can’t wait for the next, many thanks to Gregg Olsen for a book I couldn’t put down.
My thanks also to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Battling her own demons adds to the tension as Megan, our detective/protagonist must locate the estranged wife and son of an arrogant scion of the richest man in the Northwest. Dysfunctional relationships abound affecting the characters involved.
Another good mystery from Gregg Olsen. Megan Carpenter, the main detective is flawed, gutsy, sarcastic and ruthless at times. In this case, searching for a missing abused woman and her young child. Lots of interesting and believable characters and a good read
Detective Megan Carpenter is dispatched to Ben Parker’s home after he calls to report the disappearance of his wife and son. While the Parker home appears normal, their neighbors tell Megan that Ben was physically abusive to his wife, Marlena and their son. And it soon becomes clear that Ben was cheating on his wife. But does that make him a killer? A woman’s body is found, but it belongs to Ben’s girlfriend. Megan must navigate a twisted and tricky path that includes not only Ben, but his father and an island that they own. Kudos for a unique and unexpected plot
I’m not surprised because I absolutely love this writer but I love this book as well. This is absolutely a fast pace thriller but still a well told story. I highly recommend it.
