Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for this copy.
Victoria Jenkins is one of my favorite authors….unfortunately I could not get into this book. I didn’t like the setting, didn’t like the characters and I couldn’t get past about 45% of the book.
Dark, thrilling and full of moments that take your breath away!
Everytime I thought I had The New Family figured out it proved me wrong, threw in some incredible twists and I’ve been raving about this book since!
If you love thrillers you can’t miss this one! !
This is one seriously good book, I can't shout loud enough to convey how gripping this book is. I was completely hooked from the beginning, it's unputdownable and the twists were shocking and unexpected. I loved every single character and they all had depth and their own stories to tell, I especially loved little Finlay, I just wanted to wrap him in cotton wool and not let him go. The plot is consistent throughout and their are no boring parts in at all. The final twist is OMG jaw dropping and I could not have guessed the ending at all, which I tried to do but alas it was SHOCKING and unexpected, I could not read this book fast enough, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can't wait to see what VJ writes next because she's an outstanding author and she knows how to keep her readers turning the pages until the early hours of the morning. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE READ THIS YEAR!! HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to VJ and the brilliant team at Bookouture, this will be a bestseller. I owe a huge THANK YOU to NetGally and Bookouture for ARC, I loved reading it and I really appreciate you allowing me to read this stunning book before publication.
Fantastically chilling and unsettling. The story starts with, seemingly, two unconnected threads and we’re left wondering for the larger part of the book whether these two strands will converge. The first thread is a mysterious man who arrives in a coastal village with his three year old son with, apparently, very little luggage but as time progresses there is a lot of psychological baggage and intrigue. The other thread is an exhausted wife and a mother to baby twins as we discover her tentative relationship with her husband and the hint of infidelities and past secrets.
The way this book is written is very clever and the tension mounts slowly and stealthily and I really had no idea which direction or directions it was heading in or whether the two worlds would collide. It kept me guessing about various themes right to the end and I was compelled to finish the book to unravel the secrets which definitely were not disappointing. A recommended read for sure.
Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for an early copy of The New Family. I’m sorry to say I did not like this book, tooooooooooo confusing and then towards the end, the confusion was insane. Sorry.
I was lucky to receive an advance copy of The New Family from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review and opinion. I loved this book! I thought it was an incredible psychological thriller with so many twists and turns.. I enjoyed every minute of it and will definitely look out for more from this author.
TW: sexual assault, infidelity, domestic violence, stalking
Wow! I pride myself on being able to work out the twists before they happen but this one kept me guessing until the very end. Everything was explained by the end of the story perfectly. This is one of the best thrillers I’ve read this year.
It looks like so far my three-star rating is a rarity for this book! Everyone seems to love it, and it is a decent book, but I felt like it was two different stories that felt awkward once they came together. Those stories, points of view from women named Brooke and Christina, are really good on their own, but we’ll get to what I think about the ending soon enough…
Brooke is a single lady living in the same tiny seaside town she grew up in. Her family is gone, and she rents out the house that she was raised in so that she can afford her true passion - painting. Her newest tenants are Oliver and his son, Finley, and while she likes them, she has many questions about how they ended up in her area. Where did they come from? Where is Fin’s mother? Why doesn’t Finley speak, and what is Oliver hiding?
Christina is a physiotherapist, mother of twins, and is cheating on her husband, Matthew. One day, she guiltily breaks off the affair, but her paramour, Joel, isn’t taking it well. Soon, bizarre gifts, phone calls and threats are haunting her. Is Joel trying to get her back, or ruin her life? Does anyone else know what she’s done? What if Matthew finds out? Would he take the twins? And why does she feel so sick all the time?
Both are good stories with lots of questions and involving plot lines. Had they been two separate books with two separate endings, I think they’d have been fantastic. As it was, though, the relationship between the two women seems like such a convoluted way of getting to the ending as the connection between them is tenuous at best. The whole book felt nice and easy, then the ending felt forced and difficult. I still think this was enjoyable read though, so I’m giving it 3.5 stars, rounded down because it was slow to start as well as having that discordant finish.
(Thank you to Bookouture, Victoria Jenkins and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.)
Good book! This book had suspense, intrigue, and a good storyline! It was a good read , not one of my top favorites but still worth reading! I would recommend this book! It just fell a little flat for me?! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
The New Family is a gripping psychological thriller you won’t want to put down. Jenkins shines at creating relatable and imperfect female protagonists that have you invested in the story from the start. The story flawlessly alternates between two narrators, two timelines, and two mysteries. Not only is the novel well written and engaging, the twist is not obvious, but is still masterfully crafted enough to be believable (my pet peeve is a twist that doesn’t actually add up! This one does!)
I’ll be honest, when I came across the title on Netgalley, the cover art and the blurb did not stand out for me. I almost passed it by, but the high ratings made me click “request”. I’m so glad I did.
This was my first Victoria Jenkins novel and i look forward to reading more. I’m keeping this review short because I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for a free digital copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Oh my freakin' gosh! Seriously this was just one twist after another! I'm still reeling from this one! At first you think you know how it's all connected and then BAM BAM!! Not even what you assumed! I cannot believe how these all intertwined. Woooow!!
I got to review this before the release date of Nov. 15, 2021. I gave this 5 / 5 stars easily!
Sheesh!
Wow! What a suspenseful page turner! The storyline goes back and forth between Christina's timeline and Brooke's timeline. These women's lives kept me guessing until the very end! What a great psychological thriller! Another book by this author that does not disappoint!
I was grateful to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy to read and review!
Super fast paced, entertaining story with a nice twist at the end! Did not see that coming. Really enjoyed this thriller.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advance copy of this book to be published 16th November 2021.
This is a good psychological thriller with so many twists. I enjoyed every minute of it and will definitely look out for more from this author.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
i so very much enjoy a book buy this author never disappoint s her readers very twisty . this is the story of two women s lives . Brooke who lives in a small village a painter who is all on her own no family no husband or partner she rents her family home out to get some income . then one morning walking buy the sea she meets a man and a young boy . Oliver and son Fin she offers him her house to rent , but the house she renting someone sets it on fire she thinks its someone from her past who one night rapped her but no one believed her . Christina is married to Matthew they have two twin children Edward and Elise , she has it all house and the money but Christina has a secret she has been having an affair with Joel but she ends it feeling guilty , but things get out of control she is being threatened but him , this book is like watching people not being able to control what happens i so very recommend all this authors books it will leave you feeling like you are being watched ,
I loved the sound of this thriller, when new tenants move in Brooke is pleased that they may bring a bit of life back into the house that has got a bit rundown, but when things start happening that are suspicious Brooke does not know what to do, is it them that are doing these things? when she starts asking questions Oliver and Finlay start acting strange. What will the truth be? I found this a good thriller with lots of layers, once you start peeling them off you start to uncover secrets and stuff about the past you want left behind. I was shocked at the ending, as I didn't and couldn't believe it. A book I would recommend.
This could be one of the best books that I have read all year. I honestly didnt know what to think or believe when reading it there was so many twists and unpredictability and the twist at the end was incredible, i actually gasped out loud. I could not stop reading, it was gripping. I loved it
Secrets, twists and turns from the first chapter! This is well well crafted novel, with likeable characters and a real sense of unease! I loved this book and it kept me guessing till the end.
Thank you.Bookouture (the greatest pub eva) for this thrilling new novel! 😘
The New Family by Victoria Jenkins
I've read The Argument and The Playdate by Victoria and they blew my mind.
Mainly that's why I requested The New Family because this girl can write!
Do you trust the family next door to you?
There are twists and turns that rival a roller coaster ride. Surprise after surprise kept me riveted to the pages. And the ending was utterly unpredictable.
Here is Brooke who is so happy Oliver finally decides to rent her old family home with his three year old son Finley.
She is happy because now someone else vets to bring happiness, love and fun to the old home across the street.
Her renters seem like the perfect tenants..... But she is a bit frightened when they move in with just one bag between the two. A dad and three old boy has no other belongings? Weird! Right?
Oliver doesn't like talking about his past and brushes Brooke off when she brings it up.
Her friend encourages her to drop it... But she can't shake this feeling off.
Something is wrong there!
She can't seem to find anything about either of them.
One fine day Brooke arrives home and finds her upstairs is up in flames.
Was this a freak accident? She thinks not!
Brooke fears Finley is in danger. But who will believe her with the past she's had?
Can she com face her own nightmare to save this little boy?
The plot itself is well-crafted, intense, gripping and very compelling!.
This is no slow burn. Its a fast paced story, with an ending you never see coming!
The characters bring another layer of mystery to the story, until it all comes together in the surprising, shocking and thrilling denouement.
The author nailed me! This is one of the best psycho-thriller I have read this year.
A must-read that sits very well in the psychological thriller genre, it was a delight to read and is very highly recommended.
Thank you Bookouture, NetGalley and Author for this eArc!
I will post to my platforms closer to pub date!
An Underlying Menace….
Exactly what secrets are being kept and who is keeping them in this compelling suspense. Characters are well defined, well drawn and credible, the plotline intriguing and the author successfully maintains an underlying creeping feeling of menace from the start and throughout. An immersive read.
