Another creepy book perfect for Halloween. There were some things I loved about this: like the fact that our main character is a bisexual, diabetic young girl who runs a spooky podcast. Dare isn't sure ghosts are real and mostly debunks them, but she wants to be proven wrong.
received an e-arc from Net Galley
Trigger warnings: death of a child (in the past), animal death, drowning, horror, vomit, medical content.
Thanks so much to Penguin Teen for providing me this e-ARC to review! I always LOVE the samplers because they help me decide what books I really want to preorder and which ones I can hold off on. That is, unless they're all something that have me hooked - like this one.
The Woods are Always Watching - Stephanie Perkins: I bought it. I was hooked, I needed it. It has it's completely ridiculous moments but it's a lot of fun and honestly, the characters are written so you can see yourself in them and I LOVE that.
There's someone inside your house - Stephanie Perkins
Yesss I am all for this one and super eager to read the full story. I love something that's going to put me on edge and keep me up at night. (I just love everything scary lol)
The Taking of Jake Livingston - Ryan Douglass
this was one of my top most anticipated books of the year. I was surprised that the subject matter included a school shooting though. I do own the full book, so I'll be giving it a real chance here soon.
Dark and Shallow Lies by Ginny Myers Sain
Close friends, psychic abilities, and a bayou, I am hooooked.
The Girls are Never Gone by Sarah Glenn Marsh
This has a lot of real-world plot available in it and I'm definitely interested to see where it goes from here!
The Corpse Queen by Heather M. Herrman
Honestly, I can't say anything negative about this book, All I will say is if you loved Stalking jack the ripper you will love this one too.
House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland
I honestly cannot give you a vibe based on this sample because I RAN to preorder House of Hollow as soon as I found out about it, the book is out now so I've already devoured it. It is a lot more intense of a read than it seemed.
I want to read all of these. Very exciting! I always love samplers because they put new books on my radar but hate them because my TBR is already too long!
Thank you to Penguin Teen and NetGalley for providing me an e-ARC to review!
General CW for blood, violence, gore, murder but will add specific ones to some books just based on what was included in the sample.
I love the idea of a sampler, especially themed ones like this, and I think they're a really good way to discover new authors and genres because they're much less intimidating than picking up the full book!
THE WOODS ARE ALWAYS WATCHING by Stephanie Perkins
I actually went and finished this one after reading the sample! I thought the girls' relationship was pretty realistic (who hasn't been grumpy and tired in the forest) and while yes it did get a little ridiculous, it was a fun read! More violent than I was expecting, but enjoyable!
CW: gore, violence, implied sexual assault, graphic description of broken bones, gun violence, kidnapping, implied necrophilia
THERE'S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE by Stephanie Perkins
I think I'm too much of a scaredy-cat to read something where the danger is in someone's home, so not sure this one is for me, but I can definitely see the appeal for someone who does enjoy those kinds of reads! The romance angle seemed a bit "I can fix him" but I also only read a sample! So
CW: description of murder
THE TAKING OF JAKE LIVINGSTON by Ryan Douglass
I was definitely not expecting the school shooting/gun violence message in this and think it needs to be prefaced in the blurb or something because I think this could be very harmful for people not expecting it. Also not sure about the choice to have the perspective of a school shooter included, especially as he's killing people from beyond the grave. ALSO not sure about the blurb touting the horror/death count elements of the book when it does involve school shooting discourse. Was expecting a more paranormal kind of read, but could have some interesting commentary, won't likely continue though.
CW: fake school shooting, mention of real school shooting and gun violence, description of suicide
DARK AND SHALLOW LIES by Ginny Myers Sain
I enjoyed the bayou setting, and definitely think it could lead to something interesting! I think there were a couple issues with the samples where some pages were skipped so hard to get a true feel for this one but I did also really like the idea of a close knit group of childhood friends with psychic abilities!
THE GIRLS ARE NEVER GONE by Sarah Glenn Marsh
Loved the setting, also have never read a book with diabetes rep so definitely interesting! I might continue with this one eventually but I swear if something happens to Waffles it's on sight!! Not sure how I feel about the YouTube fame element, but think its cool that she has a more skeptical approach and could be intriguing to see if real things are happening or if it's like a 'she's desperate for views' scenario. Also think the podcast element could lend itself well to an audiobook which is neat.
THE CORPSE QUEEN by Heather M. Herrman
I can definitely see why this has a Maniscalco blurb - definitely big Stalking Jack the Ripper vibes which is only further confirmed by reading the full blurb for Corpse Queen. Not sure I was the biggest fan but I love the concept of the mysterious aunt and a job that's not really what it seems - I feel the boy will be a big feature though and I didn't love him, also got a bit of a 'not like other girls' vibe from the main character. But I think if you enjoyed SJtR you would like this!
CW: description of/tampering with a corpse
HOUSE OF HOLLOW by Krystal Sutherland
I am already a House of Hollow stan so not really any comment needed apart from this is great! Perfect mix of aesthetic but creepy, fairytale but real world, and mystery! Very very enjoyable read and would highly recommend!
CW: gore, descriptions of corpses, off-page child murder
I don't think YA horror/mystery is for me... and it turns out Stephanie Perkins' writing just really isn't my style. Pretentious and pointless? Yeah... no thanks.
This was a great collection of samples that I can not wait to read! Luckily I already have a few of these to read so I am totally excited to read them!
Can't wait to read THE TAKING OF JAKE LIVINGSTON by Ryan Douglass and HOUSE OF HOLLOW by Krystal Sutherland now!
I'm already reading THE GIRLS ARE NEVER GONE by Sarah Glenn Marsh and I'm really excited to see where the story is going!
Great to get to see these previews of some excellent October reads! THE CORPSE QUEEN was my favorite!
These books look absolutely thrilling! Each one has me interested in reading more and I'm excited to get my hands on the finished copies of the books. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the advance preview of these titles.
I really enjoyed reading this sampler of Penguin Teen fall titles! I’m excited to read House of Hollow, The Corpse Queen, and The Girls Are Never Gonel. I really wanted to see what happened next with House of Hollow! I had not previously heard about Dark and Shallow Lies and The Taking of Jake Livingston, but I enjoyed them both! I will definitely be adding these new titles to my TBR and look forward to the release of all of the books. Thank you so much to Penguin Teen and Netgalley for the opportunity to read the Penguin Teen Wicked Reads sampler!
Thank you so much to Penguin Teen for this Fall 2021 sampler! Out of the seven excerpts, the only book that I have previously read is House of Hollow, which I gave five stars. From the excerpts, I most enjoyed Dark and Shallow Lies and The Girls Are Never Gone. These all are perfect for the fall and I can't wait to pick them up soon!
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Teen for allowing me to get a sneak peek inside of some exciting Fall 2021 reads! I thought that all of the samples and books fit the season well and that they were all promising. I would love to pick them up in the future and am adding them to my tbr - with the highest ones on it being "There's Someone Inside Your House" and "House of Hollow".
Always appreciative of this opportunity to see when new titles will be available from my favorite authors as well as to discover new authors of interest. Love the excerpts and seeing some familiar YA authors as well as some whom I have yet to discover.
Loved this. I really enjoyed getting a sneak peek at these books. I am always reading the synopsis of a book before I download it and I am always left wanting more, but with this, I was given just enough to know that I will instantly love these books! I already added them to my TBR.
I am so excited for some of these titles. Thanks to penguin for letting us have a sneak peak about what's coming.
Have marked many of them in my diary and are on my tbr
Thank you very much for the sampler, I will probably write down all the titles because they look great. From this list the only book I read was "The taking of Jake Livingston" and I loved it. From what I read of others, the same is likely to be the case.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Penguin Teen for a copy of this in exchange for an honest review. As always, all opinions are entirely my own. I am so excited about all of these releases! These books look incredible! I love mysteries and thrillers and have a feeling I will love these.
