Freshman Ana Dekkar excels at her elite high school where she studies the ocean through marine biology, animal communication, navigation and combat. As Ana and the freshman class leave the school for their trials at sea, an unimaginable tragedy occurs leaving the freshman class to fend for themselves - and defend their school's legacy.
To complicate matters Ana discovers the story of her ancestor, Captain Nemo, was adapted by Jules Verne in "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," and she and her classmates are in a race to secure Captain Nemo's world-changing inventions against their rival school, Land Institute.
Fast-paced action will keep the reader at the edge of their seat, and the performance and music accompanying the audiobook give an old-school feel to this new water adventure!
Highly entertaining YA speculative fiction work that reads like a mash up of Jules Verne, SeaQuest DSV, and (slightly) Harry Potter. Like all of Riordan's work the story is fast paced with a good mixture of humor, drama, and a special emphasis on portraying a broad cast of highly diverse characters. An early scene featuring a high casualty catastrophe and recurring references to both naval warfare and handguns makes this story feel like Riordan's most violent tale to date, although I suspect it's actually more on par with the Heroes of Olympus/Roman Gods series in actual fact. While the book is currently being sold as a stand alone work, it's pretty obvious a series is being considered (and I, for one, really hope that actually happens). The audiobook version (which is the ARC I reviewed, thanks to NetGalley!) probably would rank four stars due to some unusual choices in performance (particularly when voicing male characters), but I'm willing to cheat up to a five in deference to my belief that I probably would have liked it even more had I been able to simply read the text version.
Riordan never lets me down with a new release! Ana is a main character that is relatable which still being completely original and unique. The book had a great diverse cast and wonderful representation. Definitely a book I will come back to again and again!
I was a little disappointed by this book. I have heard such great things about this author maybe my expectations were too high. I thought the plot was interesting enough and good pacing made it easy to get through. I liked the idea of building on the classic Jules Verne story. I didn’t really like any of the characters though. It was probably an effort to have diverse characters but it felt forced when their race or religion was brought up and didn’t really relate to the story. I found the protagonist to be a bit repetitive in her thoughts about losing her brother and parents. The writing made her sound almost whiny rather than feeling her grief. The music playing during parts was distracting for me.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to review the audiobook.
Having never read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, I didn’t know what to expect with Daughter of the Deep. This new series opener, a retelling of the Verne classic, is quite different from Riordan’s middle grade series-this one is serious science fiction. I felt the first half of the book dragged a bit, but the second half was non-stop action with betrayal and battles and a sea monster. Ana is an awesome main character surrounded by a diverse and well-developed secondary characters. The audiobook was a production. The narrator is fantastic and often accompanied by dramatic music.
Great characters and story. i really enjoyed this and hope it is the start of a series. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook.
I ADORED this book! Rick Riordan’s newest novel is a retelling of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, set in our modern world at an academy for talented kids, specifically focusing on ocean-centered careers. Ana Dakar is a direct descendant of Captain Nemo. When tragedy strikes her prestigious academy, she and her classmates mist find Captain Nemo’s ship, the Nautilus, and work together to save their world,
The characters and world building in this book are phenomenal! Details and descriptions will capture reader’s imaginations and inspire young writers. This book is well-worth the read!
Another Rick Riordan book that has it all - a diverse cast, humor, adventure, characters you immediately root for and tear-jerking family dynamics. This also a great audiobook, with a talented narrator and music cues! I've never read an audiobook with a score, so that was exciting. Of course we'll get this for our library, Uncle Rick is essential! As someone who isn't familiar with Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, the inspiration for this, I was worried I'd be lost but it was super easy to pick up on. I loved the journey the characters went on, and how all of their different skills and experiences are valued. I think this book will be super empowering for young people, because it empowered me, an adult. .And like Riordan's other books, this was funny. I laughed out loud many times and appreciated the Great British Bake-Off references! The last thing I loved is small but important. There's a lot of open and honest talk about periods in this book, which rules. Every time I read YA I'm like "Okay, but when does she get her period? Does she not suffer from debilitating cramps while saving the world?". So yeah this was awesome and I can't wait for teens to read it.
Though we most likely won't purchase the audiobook we will purchase the hardback copy of this title.
Riordan has another winning series on his hands judging from the first book. It's adventurous, full of action, loss and triumph. Loved the characters.
Daughter of the Deep is a winner. I have doubled the number of copies that I had on preorder. This book has it all—excitement, despair, discovery, defeat, victory—it’s all there in Anna’s journey “under the sea!” She and her freshman classmates face the loss of friends and family at the beginning of the adventure.. They fight to survive as they are chased by the group that destroyed their school. After making their way to Captain Nemo’s hidden base, they discover the “Nautilus”— in all it’s glory. This is only the beginning of a fantastical adventure in which Anna and her crew journey aboard the “amazing” Nautilus and fight to defeat their attackers. This should appeal to Middle and High School boys and girls. Can’t wait to check out the first copy!
This book was fun for all ages. The narrator did a great job drawing you in and feeling like you were swept up into the world. This was such a fun homage to Jules Verne and not a retelling. So do not go into this thinking it is a retelling. Rick Riordan creates this intense dynamic that kicks right off. If you like his Percy Jackson series then you will really enjoy this since it has similar dynamics with many twists and turns.
I have loved and use Rick Riordan's books in my classroom for years so I was so excited to see him coming out with a new book. I was a little nervous that it wasn't going to be focused on mythology like he's so famous for and I wanted to love it. I shouldn't have been nervous at all. It was a phenomenal story. It was filled with action, great characters, and a great storyline. I am hoping that he will continue this as a new series.
The audiobook was fantastic. The narrator captured all of the feelings and excitement of the story. I'd definitely recommend it.
Uncle Rick did it again. Just fantastic. The only thing I don’t like is that this is a standalone book and not the start of a brand new series! Thanks for the ALC @netgalley #netgalley #daughterofthedeep
Thank you to NetGalley and Disney Hyperion for providing an audiobook eARC for review.
This was different than what I was used to from this author. There was less mythology and more retelling.
That being said, I absolutely loved this novel. I thought the characters were well written and relatable. Esther is probably my favourite, with Jem a close second. The friendships built were phenomenal, and I loved the reference to Verne’s novel.
I listened to an audio version of this book, and I thought it was very well done. The narrator is one I’ve listened to before, and her intonation, pronunciation, and differentiating voices for characters were all excellent.
Rick Riordan does not disappoint in the telling of this 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea-inspired coming of age adventure story. There were lots of twists and turns throughout this fast-paced and engaging novel. I enjoyed following Ana on her journey of self-discovery as she learned what it meant to be a good leader, and I loved that her supporting cast consisted of so many diverse characters. The narrator of the audio book version was fantastic, as was the accompanying music during some of the exciting passages. My one concern was a tiny section that lingered a just little too long on periods and maxi pads that might turn off some of your pre-adolescent/adolescent male readers. It made me cringe a little as I imagined myself reading this to my son back when he was too young to read it himself, but was hanging on every word. I don't think it was crucial to the storyline and could have been left out.
This was another fabulous book by Rick Riordan. Same witty humor, quick paced action that plunges you into this new world filled with lovable characters. Fans of Rick Riordan won't be disappointed!
If you know me well, you know my love for Rick Riordan’s writing is very high. Percy Jackson is the series I read almost every year and it continues to be my favorite. Well, Daughter of the Deep was all I hoped for and more. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book. It is different than his normal, but the writing was still fantastic and the story kept my attention. Riordan gives a modern take on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and has a female lead. What more could I want? Maybe a sequel. 🤞🏼
Thank you Disney Audiobooks on NetGalley for early access to this book.
Daughter of the Deep is the story of Ana Dakkar, a freshman at HP Academy, the place that graduates the best of the sea. On their school trip, a disaster results in the loss of their school, leaving Ana and her freshmen class stranded at sea. However, it's at sea that Ana learns her true destiny.
It's hard for me to rate this book for a few reasons. First of all, I liked the story very 20,000 Leagues heavy which I know was the intention. There were lots of cool elements of the sea story. However, the characters were a bit lacking. Ana felt a bit flat to me. She was smart and strong, but sometimes she didn't seem fully formed. I'm not so sure it matters but I had a hard time discerning whether this was YA or Middle Grade. Sometimes it seemed like YA and other times very Middle Grade. Aside from Ana, I really didn't care for any of the other characters except for Esther. The autistic girl was the best! She was interesting, likeable, adorable, funny, and realistic, so most of the stars are for her.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ALC. I thought the Soneela Nankani was great, but the audio had music, something I'm really not used to with audiobooks. Except for the piano pieces, the music was super loud and distracting, so I definitely wasn't a fan of that.
