Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest opinion. Basically, this one did not work out well for me as a digital copy prior to actual publication. I can tell it would be a great paper book and I will most likely buy it down the road but it was a total mess when I was trying to read it. It had some really great pictures and some really great recipes...that is all I can say :)
I gave this to my single grandson but had to try some of the recipes before hand. The recipes are easy to follow....a definite plus for him....use pantry staples.....a plus for me....and produce excellent results....a plus all around. So with three pluses, 5 stars are definitely called for. Did I mention he was very grateful?
I an unable to review this title, as it was archived before I had a chance to download and read it. This feedback is only to stop this title from adversely affecting my netgalley feedback rate. If in the future I have the opportunity to read this title, I will post a proper review here.
There are few books that cater to the "cooking for one" sub-genre (a genre I think should exist). So, Kelly Jaggers' baking cookbook comes as a fresh entry for foodies everywhere. And for people who are afraid this caters only to the sweet-toothed section, fear not. Ample section of savory recipes of pies and tarts are included here. I was pleasantly surprised by the time I finished reading this.
This is the perfect book if your single and enjoy cooking or baking. Easy to understand and helpful. Baking is a passion of mine but it's hard baking for just one and this made it easier
This book was received as an ARC from Adams Media through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was waiting for a cookbook such as The Ultimate Baking for One to release because as someone who has a strong sweet tooth and struggle with weight loss, it's a pure gift of the release of this book. I lost count of how many times I just wanted one muffin, one donut, one slice of cake but the entire stash, cake, and baker's dozen keeps calling my name and one brownie turns into one pan of brownies and hello calories. Kelly Jaggers brilliantly constructed these recipes using the most affordable tool everyone has, a coffee mug. Just when I thought I found all to do with a coffee mug, I now have over 175 ways to cook with one for a sweet treat only for me.
A cookbook that all will refer to and use for years to come. This cookbook deserves 5 stars.
I adore baking, but it's quite hard to bake if you know you're the only one who is going to be enjoying your treats. When I lived abroad the problem was that I didn't have people in the house to share it wit. Now I live with people with various diets/food preferences which mean not everyone can eat everything. So when I saw Jaggers' Baking for One cookbook I was immediately intrigued. This way I can cut down on waste while still making delicious things!
What is definitely key is keeping a close eye on the recipe and fully sticking to it! Baking is always a precise science, less free than cooking in my opinion, but when you're baking for one it becomes even more important to pay attention to all the measurements. One recipe I will definitely be using is the Pizza Crust for One! I love making pizza and if I could start making my own base that would just elevate the experience.
I would absolutely recommend this to anyone wanting to either bake for themselves or for max two people. The book doesn't just include sweet recipes but also, as mentioned above, salty things like breadrolls and pizza crusts which means it can really come in useful at any point.
Sometimes you just don't want to bake anything with too many servings. And you only want to bake just enough for yourself for a treat. The Ultimate Baking for One Cookbook is the perfect book to show you how to create tasty treats. There are 175 different recipes to choose from and I'm sure you would find more than a handful that'll become your favorite.
Kelly Jaggers’ The Ultimate Baking for One Cookbook is a wonderful collection of recipes for an unimaginable range of small-batch baked goodies! The book features both savoury and sweet items including traditional favorites like Chocolate Chip Cookies, Blondies, and Pecan Pie as well as more unique dishes like Japanese-Style Strawberry Cake, Chinese-Style Steamed Buns, Pan de Calatrava, and Zucchini Muffins. I love the simple and easy-to-follow recipes as well as the helpful tips. However, I wish the book’s layout was nicer and I was really disappointed with the lack of pictures.
The book is divided into chapters on Small-Batch Cookies and Brownies; Cakes and Cheesecakes; Breads, Rolls, and Biscuits; Pies, Tarts, and Cobblers; Puddings and Custards; and Muffins and Quick Breads. There is also a comprehensive and helpful chapter guiding us through the process of baking for one. Jaggers gives great tips, baking techniques, important pantry staples and ingredients as well as useful tools and equipment.
Jaggers excellently executes the concept of dedicating an entire cookbook to small batch and single serving dishes. I love eating and baking and that becomes a huge problem when I make a recipe that has multiple servings because I will definitely be eating all of those servings!
Although the book mostly features delicious desserts, there is a surprising number of yummy savoury dishes. You can indulge your sweet tooth with Peanut Butter Fluff Pie, Pina Colada Bread, Spiced Cardamom Custard, and Cookie Butter Cheesecake. However, you can also explore food options like Garlic Knots, Ham and Cheddar Quiche for One, and Savory Cheddar Ale Muffins.
The recipes are clearly detailed and easy-to-follow. Jaggers’ writing style is concise and approachable. Each recipe begins with a brief write-up offering helpful tips, ingredient swaps, a little background of the dish, and even suggestions on using the remains of certain ingredients!
I love the approachability of all the dishes! The majority of the ingredients are affordable and accessible pantry staples like eggs, flour, and butter. I like that even the more specialty ingredients like bread flour, buttermilk, heavy cream, and sweetened condensed milk are still moderately inexpensive and easy to find. Although several of the recipes may be time or labour-intensive, all the dishes in this book are very doable for even the most amateur of bakers.
However, the book’s layout is sparse and boring. I wish the design was prettier and eye-catching. This is such a great cookbook and it deserves a beautiful layout! Furthermore, there are barely any pictures. The handful of pictures that are included are dull and unmemorable and do not do the delicious recipes any justice.
The Ultimate Baking for One Cookbook is a fantastic collection of single-serve and small-batch dessert recipes. Although I wish there were much more pictures, there is very little else to complain about with this book. It will be a perfect gift for any baker in your life!
I also purchased a personal copy.
🎂🎂🎂🎂 out of 5 cakes!
This is one of those cookbooks I've been looking for.
The Ultimate Making for One Cookbook, by Kelly Jaggers, has one person meals that fit someone who only cooks for themselves and has been wanting to mix it up without making enough food for the whole week.
Also, the deserts, man, the deserts.
The recipes in here, particularly the sweet ones, hit me just right and also were easy to follow and mostly used simple ingredients.
If you are looking for recipes to try out, and don't want the commitment for a lot of food, or have been trying to downsize how much food you eat at one so you don't binge (definitely something I look for), or just are tired of constantly wasting food because you just can't eat all of it before it goes bad or are just wanting more variety without tossing food away, this is a really great cookbook to check out.
I did recieve a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed the appeal of these recipes but decided I would rather cook in larger quantities. Nothing is more disappointing than to love a dish and not have a chance for additional servings.
A perfect book - very useful for people who want to bake but not have a mountain of leftovers/too much! I would recommend this for anyone
A great cookbook for the beginner or the expert baker. There is a lot of beginner-level info for the new to baking folks, but what I loved about it is that I could bake something just for me and not have a bunch of leftovers that I had to keep eating when all I really wanted was to satisfy a sweet tooth. It's perfect for that!!
Thank you for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for honest feedback. I am often cooking for one, but I have never tried to alter my baking for one. I always over-bake and/or I am baking for a large group anyway. I was interested in this premise, the baking for one. This would help if you're just trying to practice and don't want to make a huge cake or large amount of baked goods while you're trying out different methods. I think this book had a large amount of content (100+) and provided ample instructions, guides, and photographs to help anyone attempt to "bake for one." No matter your skillset, there is something in this book for any baker. I have read some other thoughts that say that they wished there were more photos. I think that is a valid opinion. With a lot of cookbooks nowadays, a big selling point is the food photography. But what I think is important for me as a cookbook reader is just having photos as instructions/guides. I like to visually learn so yes, I agree, more photos would be fine. Otherwise, I think this book met its aims and what it provides is an interesting and unique collection of recipes and tips.
The Ultimate Baking for One Cookbook is a great starter book for those beginning their solo baking journey. Baking for one can be daunting but Jaggers has made it simple with this far-reaching guide.
This recipe book starts with a lot of basic information that would be great for the novice baker, making this the perfect book for a new adult starting out in their first apartment and wanting to try some baking. I also love the idea of trying out baking on a smaller scale when you are new to it, so that if you're concerned about wasting ingredients on items with poor outcomes, this book is a great option. The cookie recipes only produce 6 cookies, which would appeal to those who struggle with portion control when tempted by the smell of fresh-baked cookies. A great little baking book for new bakers and those who want to make smaller batches.
Not much to say. This book was fun. A great way to conquer my sweet tooth without the mess or leftovers.
The recipes seem nice to be made nicely for one person. typical recipe setup and information. if looking for one person cookbook this can be a good addition.
Nice to find books with recipes for one or two BUT I found cutting down the recipes sometimes doesn’t work. I think I might try a few but not something I would use often enough.
I love the concept of this book. Sometime I want to bake just for one or small batches and this book is perfect for that. Anyway, I wish there were more photos in the book.
