I was so excited to receive an advance copy of When She Disappeared, after loving this duo's debut novel, The Family Tree. I thoroughly enjoyed their newest endeavor. I had an inkling early on as to who had killed Jessie and why. It wasn't until the very end that I found out that I had been on the right track but was wrong as to the who. It was a good twist.
Their writing style makes for a fast read yet sometimes comes off as more YA than adult. I love having a mystery book that I can recommend to my teen without worrying if the subject matter or the manner in which it's dealt is too graphic but I would have enjoyed some more nuances from the wording. The characters and the plot are interesting and well paced that it's easy to overlook some of the issues I had in the beginning before I really got sucked in to the story. I will continue to read books by Steph and Nicole. Their passion for true crime and justice for victims really shines through.
Also, I really enjoyed the pop culture references especially the Three's Company one! That summed up my own childhood with my mom and I've recently introduced that series to my own kids. So fun!
I was not the target audience for this book. I had a very hard time pushing throw this book as I was indifferent to the main character. I have read from unlikeable characters and enjoyed the book but there is something about feeling indifferent that makes a book hard to read.
There isn't a whole lot that I can say about the book without spoiling it as it is a thriller/mystery. I did enjoy the ending as it was a fairly realistic twist.
If small-town murder mysteries are of interest to you, I would still recommend picking up this book
A great thriller that I loved from the front to the back. Margos friend Jessie went missing fifteen years ago she has moved on been to college and married now divorced from her cheating ex. Now her Dad has had an operation so she has headed back to town to look after him at the same time as a group of kids celebrating the end of the school year by jumping in to a deep pool accidentally sets Jessie free but it a body.
So that's the story starting line and the writing is excellent,Margo meets several old friends or people she knew but friends works be a big stretch apart from one special but I will let you read about that. The characters are believable even if some may seem extreme but they have faced things hopefully you never will. Well apart from the ones that have money but hope if you do your a lot nicer.
For me this is 5stars I enjoyed it I hope you do to.
Jessie goes missing many years ago, everyone thought she left after she had a fallout with her boyfriend.
Present day – her body is found, and her close friend Margo comes back looking for answers. Eventually the reader learns about what led to the death of Jessie. This was a good intriguing book, this was my 2nd book by the authors and I thoroughly liked it.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books for the ARC for an honest review.
I enjoyed this suspenseful story. These are two new authors for me which I can't wait to see what they have for us next. I enjoyed being pulled into the story from the beginning. Their writing style made the story easy to read as well as entertaining. This is a well written story that is full of secrets and action. A story of a small town where everyone knows everyone but is that good or bad as they are about to realize that the killer could be closer than realized. I enjoyed how the characters were not only relateable but also made the twists and turns come to life.. They had me turning pages fast. They had great growth as well as supportive of each other. The author's use of details brought a realistic feel to the plot as well as brought the suspense to a higher level. I really enjoyed this story and what the characters brought to the story. I highly recommend this book.
Oh my what a book. I was hooked from the first paragraph and then I couldn't put it down. The style of writing and the level of detail made me feel like I was there. I couldn't read it quick enough.
I've not read anything by this duo before and it can't wait to read more.
Thanks Net Gallery for this ARC for an honest review
This was set a brilliant read.. Nearly read it in one sitting I couldn’t put it down. Twisty and atmospheric the characters were so good. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Margo returns to her home fifteen years later after the demise of her marriage. She is back where her friend Jessie disappeared without a trace. When the remains of a body are discovered it turns out to be Jessie. She had not run off as everybody thought. When Margo gets involved with investigating the case, she is warned off. Who wants the truth to stay hidden? A captivating plot.
I read this book in two sittings. I was pulled into the book immediately and had to find out what happened! I loved the documentary and interviews aspect and how that brought light to the past and present. All the characters were suspicious and hiding something. I was so convinced I knew who the killer was.. I was wrong and honestly didn't expect the ending at all, which I was happy about!
I love this writing duo and will read anything they write! They really know how to set up the scene and make you feel like you're there. The scenes where Margo thought someone was watching her truly creeper me out!
Thank you to Netgalley & Avon Books for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!
Oh what a tangled web we weave…..
When first we practice to deceive…..
When She Disappeared is certainly full of lies, secrets and deceit.
I have to say, when I began reading the book, I had a slight inkling of what the ending was going to be. But, the author did a great job of keeping me in suspense right up to the end.
I did feel that the main character was pretty immature in what she did and in her thinking/reasoning abilities.
Overall, a twisted suspense/thriller/mystery that will keep you engaged.
Many thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
This is a hard book for me to review, as my view changed near the end, for the positive. Margo has returned to her hometown to take care of her father but just as she comes home, the body of Jessie, a cheerleader who has been missing for fifteen years and was Margo's friend, is recovered. A show called "Into Thin Air" comes to investigate the death and see if they can turn over any new leads.
SPOILER ALERT: My problem through most of the book is that I found Margo an annoying character stuck in her past. There is a reason for this characterization, but it is not obvious until the end of book. What I had put down to poor writing of the main character, was actually leading to an understanding of actions at the ending of the book. This redeemed the story for me to some degree. Prior to that, though, I found the rehashing of the same evidence a bit repetitive.
This was overall an enjoyable read and I would give it 3.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, the authors, and Avon Books UK for allowing me to read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
When She Disappeared will reel you in from page one to the surprising ending .
The book is full of unlikeable characters that you can snarl at and some that you just feel sorry for like Margo.
Margo has returned to town after a bad marriage to look after her dad. Just so happens that her best friend who has been missing for 15 years has just surfaced.
Margo teams up with Austin to help question people for documentary on who killed Jessica.
I followed the twists and turns carefully and thought I had it solved.
Wrong.
Get your copy of When She Disappeared and put it near the top of your TBR pile.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books Uk Avon for a page turning read.
Margo left Lake Moss the same year her childhood best friend, Jessie, disappeared. Fifteen years later, Jessie’s body is found the day before Margo returns home. With another friend, Austin, and his documentary crew in town to investigate, Margo jumps at the chance to help them find out what happened to Jessie.
What I really liked about this book was the way it gave off a true crime feel. The documentary plays a really big part in the story so a lot of the information that’s coming through is from interviews that Margo and Austin are conducting. You get the feeling no one is being completely truthful, which makes it even more fun when the secrets come out. There’s a few red herrings, one big twist that I did figure out, and an ending that surprised me.
When Margo returns to her hometown to care for her sick father, the body of her high school classmate is found submerged in a hidden swimming hole, 15 years after her mysterious disappearance. That sets the scene for When She Disappeared, as Margo joins forces with another high school friend who is doing a follow up podcast of the disappearance. The book follows the same format as many before it (old grudges, teenage secrets, etc), but there are a few plot twists that save the story, although there’s not a lot of suspense, as the protagonist just meanders from one podcast interview to the next. Was hoping for more, but it just didn’t deliver. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading ‘The Family Tree’ by these authors so I was eager to read this next book by them too. It didn’t disappoint.
The story revolves around a missing girl and a reopened investigation into her death when her body is discovered by chance 15 years after she went missing. Jessie disappeared one night and with the investigation bringing up no leads or answers to her whereabouts the case was never solved.
Margo, an old friend of Jessie’s, returns to Lake Moss to visit her Dad who is recovering from surgery. She lost her mum at an early age and the trauma of her death has caused Margo to suffer nightmares and paranoia.
Austin, Margo’s old school friend and crush is working on a tv documentary series surrounding the disappearance of Jessie and the recent discovery of her body. Margo previously worked in courts taking notes of proceedings so she jumps at the chance to tag along on the interviews with Austin, hoping that she can help uncover the identity of the killer.
Everyone seems to be covering something up and original alibis for the night of Jessie’s disappearance are found to be untrue. Will they ever get to the truth or are there just too many lies and secrets which will be kept hidden?
Soon into the interviews, Margo thinks she is being watched and also receives threatening messages telling her to back off or else! Is her paranoia getting the better of her or she really in danger?
My only slight negative was that it was a slow burner which went on a bit too long during the lead up to the documentary. This said, I still enjoyed it and was shocked by the ending.
Many thanks to netgalley, the publishers and the authors for an arc.
I received a gifted copy of ‘When She Disappeared’ by Steph Mullin and Nicole Mabry in return for my honest review.
This book follows Margo as she returns to her childhood home, Lake Moss, to help look after her father.
Just as she returns there is news that the body of her friend Jessie who went missing when they were in school has been discovered.
Austin her childhood crush is in the town helping to film a documentary to be broadcast to help find Jessie’s killer. Margo soon becomes involved, but when she gets some threatening messages, she is even more determined to find the killer.
Everyone who is interviewed seems to become a possible suspect with secrets and lies to be uncovered.
Will they find out the truth? Is Margo in danger or is she being letting her paranoia take over?
This book is told by the main character Margo, and you also get to see some excerpts from her diary from when she was younger trying to deal with her past.
I really enjoyed reading this book, as throughout there are so many possible characters that could be guilty. I found myself constantly going between everyone.
I loved how Austin and Margo were together whilst they were interviewing different people, as they brought you into the secrets and lies of the town.
Overall, an intense psychological thriller which will make you suspect every single character at least once.
When she disappeared tells the story of Margo who returns to her childhood town where her friend disappeared before high school graduation after a failed marriage. She comes back to town to take care of her dad just as Jessie's body is found in a cooler in a secret swimming hole. Coincidence? I think not! The plot was engaging and the characters well developed. It was hard not being engrossed in this tale of what did happen when she disappeared . If you love a good thriller you will enjoy this one.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are entirely my own
In 2004 Jessie disappeared from a small town called Lake Moss in America. 15 years later Margo returns to the town to nurse her father after an operation. There is an updated programme being filmed about Jessie and Margo is roped into helping an old friend Austin to interview more locals. We gradually learn about Jessie, her boyfriends and other girls who were closer than Margo was to her. This is an entertaining story at first and an enjoyable read. However when Jessie’s body is found it becomes a much darker story. The actual murderer is a total shock and I won’t spoil it for everyone. This is an excellent who done it and the reason why and who is very different from what all the interviews pointed to. This is an excellent psychological thriller and it is hard to put down once you start. There is one final twist at the end which was also unexpected.
My first time reading this author and I was kept riveted. I’m not going to lie, I was so annoyed with the MC Margo when the book started. I thought she was a teen in adult’s body and that bothered me.
I kept reading and my goodness!! 🤯 Mind blowing!! Margo’s friend Jessie disappeared 15 years ago. Most thought she ran away. Her body is discovered and so starts the investigation.
A small town setting where everyone seems to be hiding something. Well, to find out those secrets and who did it, you have to read it!!
A well written book with likeable characters. I honestly didn’t believe the book was finished. I was looking for more. Nothing beats a suspense/mystery/thriller that leaves you wanting more!!
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK for the e-arc in exchange for my honest review.
I loved THE FAMILY TREE and was stoked to get this arc!
Wow wow wow!! What a bloody fantastic book!!
This is my favourite book I've read so far this year - it'll be quite hard to top this one!
I loved the plot and the characters and the writing.
I was literally on the edge of my seat reading this - especially when /that/ reveal happened. I did guess the who-dunnit about half way through but it still shocked me when it happened!
I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a nail-biting thriller!
