Emily Henry has done it again. She’s written a story that’s consumed me whole. This one right here might just be her best yet.
It’s a love story for love stories. The relationships between the MC and her sister, New York City, and discovering how to live again, make this an ultimate ode to what causes us as readers to continuously turn the pages. I laughed out loud (quite frequently & unexpectedly— Emily Henry knows how to make me laugh!). I also swooned and fell head over heels for one of the sexiest banter-induced hero’s I’ve ever read on page.
This right here is why I couldn’t wait to read this book. I knew it was going to be spectacular & it truly is.
Oh gosh, oh gosh, this was so good, I read it in less than 24 hours. Beach Read was good, PWMOV was great, and somehow Book Lovers is even better???? Emily Henry keeps getting better and better. Preorder this immediately.
I absolutely loved this book. It gave me hallmark movie vibes and its funny because that's what the main character in the book refers to a lot. She works in publishing so she always makes these little references to tropes and book things and compares her life to them. I also really liked how the book that she's working on publishing kind of reflects onto her life and even she notices that in the first place. I also really liked the banter between the two characters! And the relationship between her and her sister was pretty well done and I think it really added to the whole story.
I will admit, I started this book highly optimistic. Another Emily Henry romance between a literary agent and an editor?! YES, PLEASE! But there's always that niggling fear in the back of my head, "What if it's bad?" Have no fear, dear reader. Emily Henry delivers again in this slow burn romance. Nora Stephens knows she's not the romance novel heroine, she's the villain. She's the girlfriend the leading man had *before* he found his true self out in small town Nebraska/Texas/Georgia to leave his job as a financier/CEO/celebrity chef to help his one true love with her farm/ranch/under-performing restaurant. She unashamedly loves New York City, her job, and most of all, her sister. What she doesn't love? The golden-boy editor Charlie Lastra's attitude when she pitches what she knows will be a bestseller. Boom--instant dislike, agitation, and for us, witty, snarky, literary banter.
In many romance books I can smell the small-and-nonsensical disagreement that stops the main characters in their tracks for 30 pages until they actually have an adult conversation and continue their happily-ever-after. In this book, Nora and Charlie don't have an unnecessary falling out; there's no harmful name calling. There's only their two realities and how it makes it impossible to be together. The characters are real and layered and human -- their backstories and motivations are just the right amount of descriptive. The plot and dialogue are *chef's kiss*. Perfection from start to finish.
"You ready to finish this, Stephens?"
"Ready." It's true and a lie. Does anyone ever want to finish a good book?
I think that Emily has a solid book here that readers who don't want to admit that they're romance readers will love. I don't think it flows quite as well as the people we meet on vacation, but its a super enjoyable read with very well developed characters, clever callbacks to Beach Read and great writing.
Emily Henry DOES NOT MISS! Fans of Beach Read and People We Meet on Vacation will be THRILLED to read Book Lovers.
Book Lovers, besides being an immersive and well-written novel, scratches an itch for people who love books about people who love books. Nora is a successful literary agent in NYC who understands her own romance trope-- she is the cold, career woman who is always being left in the end for the sweet, down-to-earth woman of some small town. Nora is ok with that until one of her authors starts writing a book about a woman who seems to be just like her, known as a shark. Nora and her sister go on a trip to the small town from one of her books in order to reconnect, but Nora can sense something is up the whole time. There, Henry pulls at all of our romance novel tropes in order to make this love story both meta and satisfying.
Emily Henry's books are a must-buy, and Book Lovers is sure to be one of the favorites of 2022.
This book gives you all the feels! It is a fantastic romance, a complicated, but loving sisterly relationship. It delves into mental health issues in a sensitive way. I could not recommend this book enough, especially for anyone that’s ever felt like an outsider just seeking a home.
Book Lovers by Emily Henry was amazing! I would 1000% read anything written by her! She is a must buy everytime she comes out with a new book!
Book Lovers is so cute! Nora is a bit of a Miranda Priestly but as a literary agent and Charlie is a broody editor. Nora keeps bumping into Charlie when she goes on a trip to North Carolina. It would be an adorable meet-cute, except they’ve met before and it’s never been flattering for Nora.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book. I kept wanted to get back to reading. The relationship between the two sisters—very close but very different—hit close to home for me.
Read and enjoy!
WOWOWOWOWOW.
The moment I saw a new Emily Henry book approaching, I knew I had to read it. At the same time, once I got the ARC (thank you NetGalley and RandomHouse!), I found myself feeling a lot like one of the characters in this very book - the one who would often stop reading a book before it ended because they never wanted it to be over. ME.
Emily does such a wonderful job at writing compelling, real characters and witty, natural dialogue. Her chemistry between characters is unbearable. I didn’t know if anyone would ever leap over Gus and January for me (or that one scene and one line from Alex in TPWMOV), but Nora and Charlie were… chef’s kiss.
I loved everything about this book. I could have read another 150 pages of it.
Thank you so much for this ARC. Cannot wait to purchase a hard copy when it hits shelves. Wow.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for an eARC!
This book is 4.75 stars, rounded up to a full 5. Let me just preface this review before really getting into it, that I have not read through a book so avidly in a while. The story was fun, the interwoven plotlines were interesting, and the characters were enjoyable.
Our protagonist, Nora, is a down on her (love) luck, headstrong and determined literary agent who has a reputation for being a bit rigid and work-focused. She meets up with Charlie, who is more like her than she would care to admit, despite him being what she perceives as rude during their meeting with Nora's client, Dusty.
The story picks up when Nora's younger and pregnant sister, Libby, convinces her to go to Sunshine Falls for a month to take a break from their hectic lives. And to experience that small-town feel, even with Nora having several ex-boyfriends who leave her for small-town women. Turns out, Charlie is from Sunshine Falls and he is temporarily living there to help care for his father and mother.
From there we see the stories of Nora, Charlie, and Libby unfold to explain who they are as people and how their stories get so interconnected. From the tragedy of losing family, to dead-beat parents or parents who don't fully understand you, to true sisterhood, and learning to trust again when it comes to love. This story truly has it all, and it is a true gem for anyone interested in the publishing industry!
What is so enjoyable about this story is how human Emily Henry makes these characters, and how they can be rigid or have certain reputations without being completely despicable. It is a new twist on that typical "tough on the outside, soft on the inside" trope. Also, Nora and Charlie have incredible chemistry which is such a relief after recently reading several non-romance books, where the chemistry wasn't totally there. I believed in the connection the two had, and their personalities paired nicely as both friends and potential lovers.
Nora's relationship with Libby is also a joy to read, especially when it isn't a perfect relationship but not outright toxic. It reveals some harsh truths about being siblings with a single mother and uncovers the struggles of codependency.
The only hesitation I have with this book is that instead of leading up to one big climax scene, as typical with a lot of novels, there are several smaller climaxes, twists, and turns. Although this is a style that works and is loved by many, it did feel like there was a bit of a lull in the story for me. A lot of the story is spent having discussions about editing, or Nora's client, Dusty, who is a side character. I think a bit more room for some discourse could have gone in some of those scenes' places to ramp up the "drama" a little bit.
Overall, it is a really great book, a super fun read, and feels like a comforting hug. (Also a big fan of having a 5' 11 protagonist!)
Where do I start? If you love books and lovely characters with brains and wit, this is perfection! I adore Nora and Charlie. Their fun banter is spot on. I found myself laughing out loud several times especially when Charlie jumps into the cold water and screams/swears. And when Nora runs into him and yells “Lion!” Loved the world of book editing and working with authors. Getting towards the end I was thinking how tough it must have been for the author to wrap it all up and not piss off readers, but she got it right! One of my favorite quotes is when Charlie says- “Of course you don’t have a life. None of us do. There’s always something too good to read”. XOXOXO
Emily Henry managed to take the typical contemporary romance novel and celebrate it, give it the middle finger, and completely change it up. Book Lovers was a love letter to small towns, NYC, rom-com tropes, books and their readers. Every time I made an assumption of how the book would continue (again, rom-com tropes) the book went the other direction. It was fresh, it was fun, it was emotional, and it was new. I LOVED this book. Emily Henry has really outdone herself with her best book yet. May go down as one of my favorites of all time. If romance isn't your genre, I think this book will surprise you. There was so much depth to it. So good.
I LOVED this book from the very first page to the last. It gave me all the feels and more!!
This is, hands down, the best book I’ve read in this genre is a long time. Maybe the best ever.
Just when I thought Emily Henry couldn't get any better, Book Lovers comes out. I absolutely loved her first two books and enjoyed this one as well. Her books have me literally laughing out loud. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy. Will totally be recommending this book this Spring.
Wow. Every single time I question if an Emily Henry book can live up to her previous books, she out does herself again. It’s impossible to pick a favorite of her’s, but this one might be mine. 5 stars hands down. The witty banter is amazing and I swooned from beginning to end. Henry can’t write a book that is anything less than 5 stars. Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for my advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
I devoured this book. Emily Henry books are always an easy sell. This one had me laughing and crying. I just absolutely loved Nora and Charlie. Their romance and banter was just so good and had me grinning the whole time. Any book that involves characters that work on books or work in a book store are always a favorite of mine and this book had both. Another hit from Emily Henry. I will deffinately be recommending this book and picking up a physical copy for myself.
The banter! The tears! The snark! I want more of Nora and Charlie’s story. Emily Henry has always had a way of writing some of the most realistic, believable romances, but I think Book Lovers just takes the cake as my favorite book of her’s so far. A career woman with set goals, who knows what she wants and who actually will not settle or betray herself for love- how could I not absolutely adore this book?
What stood out to me the most (and almost immediately) was the banter between the characters. Who knew how charming work emails about Bigfoot erotica could be? The premise was entirely unique; I don’t entirely know the difference between romance and woman’s fiction, however I would define this book as somewhere in between- a type of realistic, inspirational romance.
This is honestly one of the best, well-written books I've ever read. The 'enemies to lovers' story is full of complex characters with deep issues, but the thing I love most is that no one changes who they are. I never like that in novels. STUNNING!
