This is by far my favourite series to read and Marsons’ doesn’t disappoint again. You can read these as standalone books but I’d highly recommend reading from book one with this being the 15th. Kim is back with her fabulous team with a slightly different perspective to this book as we already know who the culprit is, it just has to be proven. Shocking twist at the end which I wasn’t expecting but this is why I love these books. I devour them, with short chapters being a couple of minutes long, it’s very easy to still be reading late into the night! Another triumph Angela and I can’t wait for book 16. Thank you for accepting my request for an honest review.
This is the 15th novel in the fabulous D.I. Kim Stone series. If you haven’t yet started the series…. why haven’t you? I have been remiss in keeping abreast of this series due to review commitments, but vowed that this year I would try to catch up.
I highly recommend though that this series be read in order to fully realize its brilliance and appreciate the evolving dynamic between the characters.
This time out, the book deals with missing children, a charming and dangerous philanthropist, and the evil psychopath, Dr. Alex Thorne, who has been Kim’s nemesis over the course of two of the previous books in the series. Now Alex is incarcerated, but when on the outside, she was a well-regarded psychiatrist.
To be brutally honest, the scenes from the point of view of Dr. Alex Thorne were my least favourite part of this novel. I would be delighted if she met her just rewards and was never seen or heard from again.
As I devoured this 15th novel in the series, I felt even more invested in the characters than I was with the previous fourteen titles. By this time, the characters are almost like family. I will certainly recommend the series to all lovers of gritty crime fiction. I have now read the first fifteen novels in the series, and I look forward to catching up with Kim’s exploits, as the series now comprises twenty books. Oh, and in case you didn’t already guess… “Stolen Ones” is very highly recommended by me.
4.5 stars rounded up
I loved this book, as always Angela never fails to grip us from page one & I am just so disappointed when I come to the final page.
Always well written & descriptive, I feel like I am on the case with DI Stone
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
Stolen Ones Angela Marsons
How are we at book 15 already! Super series that just keeps on giving!
My mind was drawing a blank with who Alex was, so it took me a while to see where she fit into the story, but I would love to see more of her.
Kim is fantastic as always.
Angela Marsons’ 15th installment in the Detective Kim Stone series, Stolen Ones, begins with the kidnapping of a young girl, Grace Lennard, who is taken from a children’s centre. Millionaire and philanthropist, Steven Harte, comes in to the station to talk to Kim, under the guise of giving her information on Melody Jones on the 25th anniversary of her kidnapping. Melody has never been found, and Kim is sure that Harte is the kidnapper and murderer, but he plays games with her and only gives her information that was previously in the press. Kim’s team goes to work uncovering previous similar cases, and digging up bones around the area. Kim has arrested Harte, but must come up with some real evidence before she must release him after 24 hours. Kim’s team is working almost around the clock, and to make matters worse, Alexandria Thorne, Kim’s nemesis, a psychopathic psychiatrist, who is in prison due to Kim, is trying to manipulate her and is up for parole. The pressure is on to keep Grace alive.
Marsons knows how to weave a story with plenty of subplots to keep readers on the edge. The scenarios take place in the UK, adding a unique setting, and the suspense starts to build at the beginning of the novel and doesn’t stop until the very end. The main characters are believable and well-developed – actually those readers who follow this series will look at them as old friends. The supporting characters are also believable, and are integral to the story.
Marsons’ Detective Kim Stone series is one that will grab readers; most will want to start at the beginning and read all of the installments.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
Stolen Ones by Angela Marsons is the 15th book in this series.
Many would think these stories must be repetitive, basic plots devoid of details, twists and turns.
They would be wrong.
Marsons’ manages each and every-time to create an intricate detailed novel that keeps you engaged throughout the entire story. Stolen Ones is no exception.
Stolen Ones plot will pull at your heart strings and have your heart in your throat while you uncover the twists and turns Marsons’ so brilliantly created.
Kim is back with the team and this latest instalment sees a little 8 year old girl vanish into thin air. When Kim arrives on the scene she finds the necklace of a little girl named Melody Jones that went missing 25 years earlier. Straight away the case turns into a frenzy looking for links between this latest disappearance and that of Melody. Add to the mix a man named Steven Harte who arrives at the station with 'information' this makes Kim even more determined to get to the bottom of both cases.
Like all of Marson's books although there is a main thread of a story there is always something running alongside it which piques your interest and in this case it's a whopper with the return of Alex Thorne. Alex is in prison and is the one person who can push all of Kim's buttons which is exactly what she intends to do.
As with all of these books in this series there is plenty going all and with all members of the team entrenched they all feature heavily which always pleases me. This particular storyline was certainly interesting and it was good to see plenty of action but I didn't rate it quite as highly as some of the books, but at this point I can honestly say Angela Marson's hasn't written a bad book...sadly she has just written so well that readers expect nothing short of miracles from her. Another great book in an amazing series! And on to book 16 I go...
4.5 stars Anytime a story involved a missing or kidnapped child, it just seem to hit a bit closer to home, having young grandchildren. In Stolen Ones, Detective Kim Stone is called to a daycare center, where 8 year old Grace Lennard skips into the garden and vanishes into thin air. When Kim checks out the area where Grace is last seen on CCTV, she finds a bracelet belonging to Melody Jones - the little girl who was taken from a playground exactly 25 years ago. The main suspect in the abduction is Steven Harte, a self made millionaire who was raised in foster care. As the case moves forward, bones are found buried in an area where Steven Harte's company had built a fountain and renovated a park. How are these cases connected to the two girls who were kidnapped years earlier and released? Why were some girls released and some killed? Can Kim find Grace before she ends up dead and buried?
This was a very interesting, gripping story that had a very unusual twist that had me sitting up even straighter. Once again the whole cast is here and they are all racing against the clock to find Grace. I just love how the team uses their own strengths and gifts to keep this investigation moving forward. Over the course of these books, I have really liked the characters and their development and we often see previous criminals make an appearance for various reasons. One person, I never hoped to see again, was Alex Thorne. She was in this book and it appears that she may be in the next book. For me this was not a positive thing and is the reason I took off half a star. Alison Lowe makes another appearance as a Consultant Behaviourist and does a great job analyzing Steven Harte's body language. I do like her appearances in the books and would love to see her become a regular. I enjoyed that this book was not as much a grisly crime story, but a psychological one that I really enjoyed. Another one, I highly recommend.
Angela Marsons at her best! A real thriller that will keep you guessing to the last page. Marsons never disappoints. Thank you NetGalley for my advance copy.
I absolutely adore the Detective Stone series and I was delighted to get the opportunity to review the newest book. I loved the plot and read the book over one sitting as I was so engrossed. It was a brilliant read and I look forward to reading Detective Stone books for many years to come!
Unfortunately not one of my favourite reads of this series . I struggled through this one and ended up skimming through it to get to the end 2.5⭐️
I so loved the mystery in this book! It was well done, with interesting characters. I would highly recommend this book to everyone.
Another amazing book by Angela Marsons, a masterpiece in crime writing. This woman never fails to keep me entertained.
This series has my heart. I love Kim so much and I am always so excited when a new book comes out, they never disappoint!
Stolen Ones takes on a different angle. First, Alex Thorne is back. The sociopathic psychologist is not done with Kim and carefully orchestrates her prison release. Then we have Alison Lowe, the behaviorist that helps Kim deduct the final clue that will close her current case. They already have the killer, but until he reveals something of extreme importance, things will not be resolved, and this includes the fact that there are girls missing that must be found alive. Then there is Alex, determined to get out of prison - now. And, she has not let up in her plans to ruin - or end - Kim. One of the things that really drew my attention to this book was learning about the opposite of Stockholm syndrome. This is Lima syndrome, where the "captor can become attached to his subject." The example used is the film Beauty and the Beast.

I absolutely adore this series and just when you think that the next book can’t possibly top the last, it does. The writing is excellent, the characters are so well developed, and the storyline is always gritty and each one different enough from the last to keep me interested. One of the best police procedural series out there.
Phew! Where do I start! The stress of seeing Alex Thorne's name has not yet gone even though I finished the book hours ago! Combined with the tense plot of the book the 15th installment of the Kim Stone series follows the trend of bring amazingly good. I thought I had it figured out but the author had other plans. The crimes were heartbreaking but the plot was so unusual. It kept me guessing till the very end. And now that I've reached the end I still have some lingering questions. This book has the distinction of featuring a truly eccentric but cruel antagonist. The chapters were creepy and there were questions like how & why constantly popping up in my mind. The end provided some closure but then took away some again. What more can I say, go read the book!!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and Angela Marsons for the arc!
Unfortunately, I was not able to review this on time due to personal reasons, but after reading it I was in love. This story is absolutely delicious and I could not stop reading. I am and always will be a fan of Angela Marsons.
