Sometimes it's thrilling to crack open a book without fully knowing what's going to happen and being utterly surprised. This was the case for this e-arc from NetGalley. I thought it was an unusual spin that loosely used Cinderella elements. Heroine's narration was charming. Kelk is a new author to me and I'm glad to see she's written other books that I can explore.
This was such a fun, glamorous, messy, heart-felt book!! I really loved Fran and her self-exploration, as well as Juliette and how everything transpired with her. It was so fun to read about the celebs and Fran’s encounters. I wish we could’ve gotten a bit more depth with Fran’s relationships, but otherwise this was a lovely romance!!
3.75/5 stars.
I'm really struggling with how to review this book. When it first started, we met Fran Cooper in the middle of a rough patch in her life. She takes a job as an assistant on a yacht for a celebrity on the way to one of the biggest balls in the world. Long story short, she finds herself sneaking into the ball and pretending to be rich and famous for a night. While there, she meets a man named Evan and falls in love.
I really loved the first part of this story when Fran first takes the job and ends up on the yacht. I haven't read a romance that takes place on a boat like this before and I was wondering where the story was going to go. But when the story switched and focused primarily on the ball and less on her job, it felt like a completely different story. The scene swap didn't feel super natural to me. While I really enjoyed the overall story and character growth, I think the work to smooth the transition between the two parts of the story could have used more work.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book.
I’ve never read a book from this author so I wanted to give this a try. It was okay. I didn’t love it. I didn’t hate it.
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC.
Unfortunately it took me many tries to finish this book and when I did, I admit it was more of a skim read. With it’s modern day retelling of Cinderella, I was expecting a bit more romance but instead the first 60% of the book felt disorganized and unimportant. The characters lacked depth and were hard to connect with. Overall, I feel like this book falls very flat. Unfortunately, as my first book read by this author, I won’t be picking up another by Lindsey Kelk anytime soon.
This was a fun and light read! This is a perfect feel good story for anyone who is feeling stuck in a relationship and trying to figure themselves out. Fran is just floating along in her life until she gets the opportunity to be an assistant to pop star Juliette which gives her life the shock it needs.
On a Night Like This is another great story from Lindsey Kelk. Fran is a thirty-two year old woman who is just kind of going through life, unhappy in her relationship and unfulfilled with the temp jobs that only barely take up her time. Suddenly, she is offered the opportunity of a lifetime, being the personal assistant to a popstar, and decides to finally do something for herself and take the job. Being an assistant to a celebrity doesn't exactly turn out how Fran thought it would, and that provides some great twists and turns throughout the novel.
Fran is incredibly relatable. After the last two years, it's safe to say that people may feel a little adrift in life, and that is what the main character seems to be dealing with throughout the novel. Fran is trying to figure out what she wants out of life and whether or not what she already has is good enough. There are also some excellent side characters she meets on her journey of self-discovery, and the romantic lead is definitely swoon worthy, but Fran is the main focus throughout and that is what makes this such an excellent read.
While the romantic aspect of the novel was somewhat limited in the grand scope of the book, it was still such a great part and Evan is a wonderful character. The interactions between Fran and the popstar Juliette were definite highlights of the story and the whole book had me laughing out loud on many occasions. The humor in this book is fantastically witty and contributed greatly to my overall enjoyment of it. I recommend this book to readers of women's fiction and romance.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Can you change your life in just one night?
In On a Night Like This, Francesca is feeling discontent with her life and decides to take a chance on a new job- as an assistant to a super rich, famous person. Her first act as assistant is to accompany this perform to the Crystal Ball on a small island in Italy. But it’s becoming more challenging than expected! Fran is also questioning her new engagement to her longtime boyfriend. She’s not sure if they are still good together after 12 years.
After traveling to the Ball, she’s abandoned with no clothes, no money or even her own passport. She decides to attend the ball anyway; borrowing a gown from her former boss. At the ball, Fran meets Evan, a handsome American. They spend the whole evening together, never exchanging any personal details. All he knows is that she’s the woman in the gorgeous dress. Fran is still engaged to Stew so she knows nothing can happen with Evan, but maybe Stew isn’t who she is really meant to be with. Evan has shown her a whole new world.
While the romance with Evan is fun, the book is more about Fran making decisions about her own life. She has a tendency to let others make choices about her life and I appreciated that Fran comes around by the end. She also has some wonderful friendships throughout the book and they encourage her to be herself more.
I really enjoyed this loosely based Cinderella story. Thank you to @lindseykelk, @harpercollins, and @tlcbooktours for my gifted copy.
Fran is stuck in life. She’s in a town she never chose, engaged to a man she’s seemingly indifferent about but has been with forever, and continually filling temp jobs that leave her unfulfilled. One day she’s given the opportunity of a lifetime - an extremely well-paying assistant job for a celebrity that will take her to the Crystal Ball, the most elite, celebrity filled event ever. While there, she meets a mystery man, Evan, who is an actual guest at the ball, not an imposter. Is one night enough for Fran’s entire life to change?
I really, really enjoyed this story. Lindsey Kelk is a wonderful storyteller and writes wonderful, fleshed out characters. I’d love a story with Jess next!
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC!
This book was entertaining from start to finish. It feels like two completely separate books that come together to totally work out in the end. One book before the Crystal Ball, and the other is during/after the ball.
The beginning has Fran struggling to find a new job when she is given the rare opportunity to be a personal assistant for an A-List celebrity and is shipped off on a yacht in the Mediterranean. This section of the book is hilarious as you envision Fran navigating being a PA to a huge celebrity and the bond they form.
The second half is mostly one dreamy night at the exclusive Crystal Ball that Fran manages to finagle her way into and agrees to spend her one and only night at the ball with Evan. You will get completely lost in magical this night.
I wish there was more between Fran and Evan. Once they meet and decided to spend the evening together navigating through this crazy ball, I didn’t want it to end. I wanted more of Evan and Fran together because I loved that one night is so dreamy.
I was a bit frustrated that the heroine never even met her love interest until about half way through the book. This is a slow burn taken to the next level. Nice story overall. Thank you publisher and netgalley for this arc in exchange of an honest review.
I'm not sure what I think about On A Night Like This, but it's certainly not positive.
Plot-wise, the book was all over the place, with our main character who's name I can't remember jet setting from Yorkshire to London to the Mediterranean. Most of the supporting case are awful human beings, and Juliette is a spoiled brat who has never been told no.
The Crystal Ball itself was... boring. The best parts of the book were when our main character was trying to keep from anyone realizing that she's a gatecrasher. And I loved the makeup artist. More of her, please. Same with the best friend. She's an amazing person who really needs more pages.
Evan... Evan was one-dimensional, even within a romance novel. Overall, not impressed. 1.5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the free eARC!
The premise of this book was pretty outrageous. Because of this, it was impossible for me to get into it. I could not stop zoning out.
Also, it doesn’t become a romance until about 50% into this book. Much of it was just a really long set up. Which made the pacing feel off, which made me mostly bored.
I should have DNF’d like I wanted to. Oops. I just skimmed through the last 25%. I just don’t care.
Oh my stars I did not want this book to end! It was magical! This was the perfect antidote for my cold, black heart. Smart, entertaining, romantic, no cheesiness, just pure sentimental delightfulness and I loved every minute of it! I got sucked in from page one and I didn’t want to put it down. If Cinderella and the Spice Girls had a baby, this would be it :)
Fran is living her safe yet mundane life just outside of London with her fiancé. She has resigned herself to the idea that this is her life-being with Stew, her partner of 12 years, temping at various personal assistant jobs and going through the motions until one day she gets offered an assistant job with an Uber famous celebrity and she wants to take it, but hesitant because when she used to have to travel a lot for work, it caused problems in her relationship and she doesn’t want to stir that all up again, but the opportunity is too good to pass up so she goes for it and it is so much more than she could have ever expected in every way-personally, professionally & emotionally. While working for Juliette she meets Prince Charming and he shows her that life doesn’t have to be ordinary and you can dream big and something those dreams come true.
I spent so much of the time reading this with a huge smile on my face. There were some sad moments, but overall it showed how strong you can be if you let yourself. “I don’t need a man, but I want this one.” Absolutely fabulous!!
Thanks to Harper Collins and NetGalley for the chance this amazing story I’m exchange for my review.
Love this modern revisited telling of Cinderella. Honestly what I loved the most though was that the love story was not the leading theme through this novel. It was friendship. So if you are looking for a great story about friends with a hint of romance in a modern pop culture story. This is the one for you! I know my students are going to love this one!

it's a very cute kind of Cinderella story but with a twist, this is written from Fran's perspective. She is a loveable character she needs to shake up and let go of the bad and doesn't know how to do it. I love how she grows in this book. Fran has always shoved stuff down and put herself on the back burner, but she realizes she doesn't need to do that, and life is better if you work on yourself too and not just people, please.
My favorite passage in this book is by the guy she meets at the ball, well first at the market than at the ball. It's about a jigsaw puzzle and how our life is like it.
"As we get older, the puzzle gets more complicated; it has more pieces, it's not so obvious what it's going to be when it's complete. Some people come into our lives, and they help with the puzzle, they see parts we hadn't figured out yet, and other people come in and make it more complicated they hide pieces from you, or they mess up the parts you've already put together. What I'm trying to say.' even slipped the cufflink back into his shirt and flipped it closed, is that even when you think someone has fucked up your puzzle, once they're gone and you look at the mess they made, maybe you see something you missed before."
That passage hit me hard and stood out the whole book, I want to get it printed. That part had me crying and it's not even a sad part in the book.
I still don't care for how people fall so fast and all that, but Fran doesn't kiss the handsome stranger and she stands her ground on waiting till she's ready. It's a Cinderella story but with a grown-up and responsible way about it. She doesn't let a guy save her.
I love Lindsey's writing. highly recommend this one to all rom-com lovers.
I enjoyed this a lot more then I thought I would. She prefers to be assistant and gets an amazing offer to work for a celebrity. While working as an assistant she discovers her worth and gets a better understanding of her relationship with her fiancée.

I liked this book but did not love this book. It felt like there were too many options of where this book could go and felt when the author finally tied the beginning of the book to the end it was too far along. I did enjoy the description of this wonderful evening and how beautiful and unique it sounded.
On a Night Like This follows Fran Cooper who gets a job being a personal assistant to a famous singer. She is supposed to help get her to the Crystal Ball. Which is a very famous charity event. Everything is going to plan until the singer leaves Fran all alone. Fran decides to go to the ball because she knows that she will never have a chance to do it again. While at the ball she meets Evan and falls for him. But there are a few problems she is engaged in and lives in England. While Evan lives in New York. In the end, will Fran choose to stay in her bad relationship or move on with Evan?
I loved this one. All of the characters were really well written. I love how Fran choose to do what was best for her in the end. I also loved the setting of this book. It was just a really cute romcom and I enjoyed it. This is one that you won't want to put down. If you are in the mood for a really cute read I highly suggest this.
This was a fun ride -- there was definitely an undertone to it of a roman à clef, although the performers' life may have been created wholly by Lindsey's imagination. I particularly liked that Fran exhibited a fair amount of personal growth and agency, as well as the friendship she ended up making with Juliette (and maybe even Sarah?).
