Thank you to NetGalley for granting this ARC, super good and fast read. The story was intruiging and the characters had an interesting back story.
I never knew the original story when I read it. It was really shocking but I liked it. I felt like the ending was a bit confusing which is what led me to look it up and learn about the original
I love young adult mystery thrillers. This one had a lot of twists and turns I didn’t see coming, and I loved the mysterious aspect.
This was an interesting take on the legend of Lizzie Borden, but I liked the book. After their mom dies and dad only says it was her heart, the girls do not believe the story. They think there is more to what really happened. Dad remarried soon after, and step-mom is just obnoxious. This was a band of characters that made the book good, but you just wanted to reach inside the book and shake some sense into them. This is the first book I have read by Kyra Leigh, and I will be searching for others. Thank you to Ms. Leigh, and NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Very surprised at how much I enjoyed this book mainly because YA books have been quite a hit or miss for me lately. But this was wonderfully done. I loved the tense atmosphere and the unreliable narrator plot was done perfectly.
Engaging and entertaining. A recommended purchase for YA collections where mysteries and thrillers are popular.
This was a fun fast paced YA take on the Lizzie Borden murders!
I do think it would work better as an audiobook because it's formatted weird with super short sentences and that took me a bit to get used to.
It Will End Like This was a spectacularly creepy, mind-bending, twisty time! I could not put this book down and struggled to rely on each narrators’ perspective!
Based loosely on the Lizzie Borden murders, IWELT is 100% for fans of Wendy Heard and Courtney Summers.
Sometimes I'll read a book "based on" another story, and I'll wish that I hadn't known it was based on anything at all. Because instead of enjoying the book, I spend my time looking for clues that point to the other story. This is one of those books. I may have enjoyed it more if I didn't know that it was inspired by "The Borden Murders."
Apart from that, which pulled me out of the narrative several times, I also found myself a little confused and I didn't think there was enough difference between the two narrators to really tell them apart. I was lost on several occasions, and would read large chunks of the book only to go back and re-read them because I didn't really understand what was happening.
I wanted to love this book, but I only liked it.
Thank you for the arc copy of IT Will End Like This. I loved this YA thriller/drama. It has the feels of Sadie and The Cheerleaders. If you like a dark mystery but one not some gruesome you should pick up this book. I was hooked and couldn't put it down. I love the cover too,
DNF @14%
I read the first 12% in one sitting back in January and never returned to it. I decided to return to it and the writing was cringe inducing. I'm good. This is a YA thriller that I am fine leaving unfinished and on my DNF shelf.
**SPOLIER ALERT**
This book is inspired by the Lizzie Borden murders so obviously, I had to choose it. There are a few similarities but I found the story plot full of clichés. I do understand this is a YA novel and so I tried to keep that in mind. But the writing could have been done a little better. There was a lot of potential to the plot but I think those were not drawn.
The storyline hinting at MPD for Charlie but that wasn't the case. Also, I feel like Maddie faded away a few times and thought that she was a part of Charlie's imagination... I guess that was cool...
I did like that the letter wrapped up the ending nicely and loved the plot twist. A twisty happily ever after! So, one can assume that Maddie also is raving mad. Honestly, I wish their Mom told them that she was dying.
So, Lana and Stephen deserve each other. Awful humans. Also, it almost seemed like Lana's mom was in on the joke.
Here are some inconsistencies I found. Full disclosure that I DID read an ARC so there is a chance that these were fixed. Call me out if they were please.
1. When their dad was planning on selling the house, they said Maddie wasn't 18 yet and the house was willed to her. And that she will never sell the house.
2. Charlie refers to Uncle Jake as Uncle 'John' during one of the investigation interviews. I thought he was also referred as Uncle 'Jack' but I may have misread that one.
Thank you #NetGalley, Random House Children's & Delacorte Press for giving me the opportunity to read this!
Well, I didn't love this. The storyline and how it was written was hard to follow because I didn't enjoy the writing style. I felt like this could have been great, especially with the plot line it had.. it just needs a few more revisions. It felt very kiddy with the writing style.
It was the mention of Lizzie Borden that drew me to this novel.
Charlie’s and Maddie’s mother died suddenly, and six months later they’re understandably still grieving. To make matters worse, their father is now engaged to a much younger woman who was their mother’s personal assistant. The girls are in a tragic situation, and now suspicions surround their mother’s death. And there are plenty of suspects who might have had a hand in it.
Written in first person, I enjoyed Charlie’s and Maddie’s alternating POV chapters. They allow a broader understanding of what was going on, but occasionally are repetitive when situations/conversations overlapped. Most of the chapters are pretty short, which helps keep the story moving. I also admired the loyalty between the sisters. They relied on and defended each other, which was a good things because they basically had no one else they could trust. While I empathized with their situation, I found it difficult to like them or really any of the characters. Although that’s not a necessity in novels I read, it does help me connect with them.
What a messed up book!!!! Like, I don’t even know how to review it other than sharing that if you like psychological thrillers, this book is for you. And when you finish, talk to me because I still have so many questions!
The book started good, with a tone that was so easy and also intriguing to follow.
Short chapters have the ability to make book seem like it reads faster, and the first person pulls the reader in characters' heads immediately.
I expected more out of a Lizzie Borden retelling, but I didn't hate this book. I did have a difficult time distinguishing the two main characters because they were so similar. I liked the the theme of mental health that was throughout the book and the somewhat open ending.
It Will End Like This is a contemporary retelling of Lizzie Borden's story. Featuring unreliable narrators, the story is told through two POVs. Charlotte and Maddi suspect there is more to the story when their mother dies. Eventually their father moves on with their mother's assistant and they realize the truth. The question is: do they take it or do something about it? This is a highly entertaining read with engaging characters and a plot that will hook readers from start to finish. Highly recommended! A fantastic debut that kept me guessing from start to finish. The writing style isn't my favorite and it was hard to follow at times but both lend themselves to an interesting structure and the creep factor.
I really enjoyed this one! I’m usually really good at predicting twists but I did not see this one coming!
