I love Lisa Gardner and would read any book she wrote! I have come to especially love the "Frankie" series. While I really enjoyed this book, I found some of the events that happened in the wilderness to be a bit far-fetched and unbelievable. About halfway through the book, I had an idea on who the "bad guy" was and I was half correct. Loved the twist at the end. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this advanced copy.
Lisa has done it again. She takes you on a roller coaster ride and leaves you breathless. Good job! One Step Too Far is definitely worth your time!!
So, I’ll admit that I didn’t read the first book in the new Frankie Elkin series by Lisa Gardner. I was a little bitter that a new path was being forged. A path that was taking me away from D.D. Warren and Tessa Leoni. I liked and knew those characters so much, it was hard to accept a newcomer. But…
Frankie Elkin is every bit as sassy as D.D. but carries a heavy weight in her heart from past mistakes and losses. Her compulsion to bring peace to families of the lost is evident in almost every page of this book. She has no special training other than her life experiences, but her tenacity and ability to read the people around her have led to 16 families having closure.
Now, in the remote wilds Frankie joins a team searching for a young man who went missing five years earlier. After a bachelor party camping weekend goes very, very badly the young man is never seen again. Frankie joins the young man’s father along with a cadaver dog and trainer, three best friends of the young men, an experienced guide, and a Bigfoot hunter. Yep, I said Bigfoot!
Not everyone is who they say they are, and there are still many secrets left from the night the young man disappeared. As mishaps befall them and survival takes precedence over the search, who will make it out alive?
I read this book in about two days, which is lightning speed in our household. Each time I feared the next chapter would drag, Gardner pumps in more exhilaration. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to start reading the first book in this series to see what I missed out on.
Note: This book can be read as a standalone, but it does heavily reference Frankie’s past, which may have been more illuminating had I read the first book prior to this one.
Author: Lisa Gardner
Books in Series: Before She Disappeared Frankie Elkin #1
Another great thriller by Lisa Gardner. This one features Frankie Elkin for the second time, and I hope not the last. Frankie travels around helping to solve cases that seem almost hopeless to solve. She does this with no expectation of reward just her need to solve the mystery. This time it’s the disappearance of a man on a trip with friends into the woods. Like all of Ms. Gardner’s books it hooks you in the first few pages and keeps going at a quick pace.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read an ARC of this wonderful book.
I read that the first book is already bought up by Hillary Swank who will star as the wonderful protagonist, Frankie Elkin. I know one can't compare but there were flashes of Lee Child and Jack Reacher in this book. Frankie goes where she thinks she is needed, owns little, and leaves that behind, She never seems to have money nor does she want to be burdened by it. I love her and I hope there are many more books in this series.
I have read other reviews and agree with the five stars. Frankie is likeable, she's a recovering drunk though the number of times she thinks about drinking while still isolated was a bit unbelievable. Most recovering alcoholics stay sober because they have each other and stay connected. So it does add to her vulnerability but.....is she that much of a risk-taker? I'd love to know what Ms. Gardner thinks.
I recommend this book and I'm going to look for the first one immediately.
Author Lisa Gardner is just so good at creating a gripping protagonist; someone who is completely out of the ordinary and yet believable at the same time. ONE STEP TOO FAR is the second thriller with Frankie Elkin, as unconventional a protagonist as ever written: a recovering alcoholic, a wanderer whose North Star is only to solve missing person cases, preferably cold ones, long forgotten by everyone else except their families. It turns out finding people may be Frankie’s singular skill and once she realizes this, she put it to good use. This particular case is filled with secrets, twists, turns and things that go bump in the night. It’s a mystery that gets scarier the farther into the book you read. Eight people go into the woods searching for a missing person, they don’t all make it out alive. It’s another great Lisa Gardner book. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Heart racing, pulse pounding, and gripping thriller! Lisa Gardner has managed to give us another action packed thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat, and you’ll never see the ending coming.
Frankie Elkin is a 40’s something recovering alcoholic who drifts from place to place looking for the missing when everyone else has given up hope. She goes where she feels compelled. She has no formal training, but her mission is to bring them home, to give closure to their families.
This time she brings her self taught expertise to Wyoming to assist with bringing a young groom home. Her search will take her into a national forest where she quickly becomes not the hunter, but the prey. The forest is full of dark secrets and Frankie must quickly uncover them if she hopes to survive.
This book was excellent, one of my favorite Lisa Gardner books to date! Frankie Elkin is a strong woman lead. She’s well written and extremely relatable. The plot was fast paced and well executed. This is the kind of book that you want to stay up all night reading. I highly recommend it!
I would like to thank Lisa Garder, Dutton Publishing, and Netgalley for the chance to read this Arc in exchange for my honest review.
Holy cow, this was an incredible book. It could quite possibly be one of my favourite of Lisa Gardner's, and I have loved a lot of hers! Frankie is such a likeable character. She works alone at solving missing person cases and finds herself joining with a group to search for a lost camper in Wyoming. The group is a mix of family, friends, a random BigFoot hunter and a cadaver dog and her handler. Gardner does an excellent job of developing each of these characters throughout the book, despite the fact that there are so many of them.
The search begins fairly normal with the focus being on planning out their route and which area to cover first. Of course, things don't go as planned and you learn quickly that something dark is hiding in the dead of the wilderness. This book touches on survival skills, broken family issues, suspense, murder and so much more.
I honestly feel bad for the next book I read as it will be hard to follow this one.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book! Highly recommend.
I read and loved Book 1 - Before She Disappeared
I reread again before reading this and loved as much. Frankie is a strong, courageous woman!
Now she travels to Ramsey, Wyoming; west of Cheyenne and south of Jackson;
to look for a hiker that vanished 5 years ago in which the mother and father are still actively searching.
The descriptions made me a part of the book - I was right there.
I am looking forward to watching Frankie on screen!
I was so excited to get another Frankie book! Gardner puts our favorite cold-case detective through her paces in this new thriller set in the middle of Shoshone National Forest.
Tim has been missing for 5 years, after a hiking trip with his bachelor party turns deadly. Frankie joins the team to hunt for his remains along with the original bachelor party members, Tim’s father, a cadaver dog and her trainer and another surprise guest. The group is lead by a seasoned hiker and guide who prepare the team for the grueling 7 day mission - a search for Tim’s remains.
But things start going awry on Night 1 and suddenly this novel (and the Wyoming weather) is down right chilling. Frankie knows something isn’t right and using her personal skills, she’s going to get to the bottom of it. If she survives.
Gardner did a fantastic job of weaving another incredible tale and letting us in deeper into Frankie’s background and also letting us see her form relationships and bonds with people.
As a fan of Lisa Gardener’s books, I was looking forward to this. It was even better than I was expecting. The main character Frankie is an ordinary woman who has suffered hard knocks in life with a compulsion to find missing people every one has almost given up on. She has no special training but gets results. This time the victim has been missing for five years from a bachelor camping trip deep in the Wyoming wilderness and Frankie joins a final anniversary search although she has no experience of camping or trekking in forests and mountains. What follows is a breathtaking thriller with enough twists and turns to make you dizzy. There is great characterization and Frankie is a delight, very human and fallible but refuses to be defeated. There is a great twist at the end I didn’t see coming. It deserves every one of the five stars ⭐️
Thanks to Penguin Group and NetGalley for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased opinion.
Ok, I need all the Frankie Elkin books ASAP….one of my most beloved characters of late.
Frankie is on the move again, from where she was left in Before She Disappeared. This is book number two, but they certainly work as stand alone stories as well.
This time Frankie ends up in Wyoming, on the hunt for remains in a cold case. She joins up with a group of the missing mans friends for one last try to find his body. But of course, nothing is as it seems.
I have to admit, I am really not into nature and hiking, camping etc. but this book made it so realistic, I forgot all about my dislike lol.
I love all of Lisa Gardner's books but this one may be one of my favorite. In the second book of the Frankie Elkin series, One Step Too Far brings Frankie to a remote location to look for a young man who went missing 5 years prior at his bachelor party. A group consisting of Frankie, the bachelor's father, the groomsmen, a cadaver dog, and a Big Foot hunter begin a weeklong search into the unknown. The things they discover will surprise all of them, so much that some may not make it out. This novel had a modern day twist reminding me of Lord of the Flies.

I’d like to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I have been a fan of Lisa Gardner for as long as I can remember and always look forward to each new book that gets published. This book was no exception. We last saw Frankie on the mean streets of Boston, this time we find her trying to help a search party trying to find Tim O’Day who has been missing for the last 5 years. With a dangerous trek ahead of them, how many of the search party will come back, especially with someone stalking them in the woods. Starts off with a bang with an ending you won’t see coming, can’t wait for the next one.
