This is the first audiobook I’ve listened to and I absolutely adored it! I immediately looked up the book hashtag on Instagram and found the author to follow her and keep updated on future Bodymore books!
What I liked:
The world-building was excellent. The setting was my favorite part of this book by far. The premise of the story was fascinating and I loved the combo of horror and snarky comedy. I also really liked the main character, Joey, but I wish the author had given her more depth.
What I didn’t like:
I could have done with a whole lot more character development. Even the protagonist was pretty one-dimensional, and all surrounding characters were barely developed at all. Also this first 1/3 of this book or so was very slow. I almost DNFed. I’m glad I finished but it never really wowed me. I think the premise was great but the plot and characters just needed more.
Thank you NetGalley, author and publisher for the free audio ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
3.5 stars
Well this is an odd little book, alright. It did a lot of cool interesting stuff where you really just have to go with it. The audio narration was solid, imbuing this story with emotion and depth when needed.
I really like our main character even though she did go on a lot of repetitive diatribes about Baltimore... While this was a cool point to make with the road we travelled down I did feel like we were told a few too many times about the bad lands, bad vibes and body count. I think if this had been less repeated and shown to us more organically I'd go up half a star.
Still, if this is setting up as a series I would seek out the next book, so there was enough done right here for that.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
