I really enjoyed the beginning, then I got a little bored with Emma's narrative -- some of it felt repetitive. However, I got deeply invested about 60% of the way through. Two of the new narrators kept me hooked! The second to last chapter had me on edge, and then the final chapter ruined it for me. Cop out.
No. Just, no. You can't seriously end a novel this way. There are a handful of plot contrivances that automatically equal the kiss of death for me - and this has one. The biggest one. After slogging through the whole irritating story (the wife is clueless and flighty and I have no idea how anyone wouldn't have seen the first Big Reveal coming), to have it end in this way was the icing on the cake: this was NOT for me.
I liked the storytelling factor and really felt it was the well executed until the ending. it took watching some gothic mystery classics
for me to realize just how good the ending was and the theatrical bent of the book.. Was very glad I took some time to think about the
trajectory before writing a review.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy.
This book is a hard no for me. I hated the writing and all the baby talk in the first 20%. Of the book was too much. DNF for me.
A married couple fall in love with a Victorian mansion in upstate New York and decide to buy the dilapidated old place. It needs a lot of work, but it's structurally pretty sound. It has its own theater right there in the house, built back when it was a dry out clinic where Broadway stars could retreat to sober up. They joke about the old movies they used to watch together, about houses with walls that drip blood, but they're not scared. Ben will come up from the city on weekends and Emma will live alone in the house for most of the week, overseeing the renovations and looking forward to the birth of their baby. Everything is almost perfect...at first.
I absolutely loved the first three quarters of the book. After that, I was still hooked even though I didn't care for the direction the book was going in...and then there was the last chapter. I don't even know what to think about that ending, except that I didn't like it at all.
Darcey Bell must be stopped. These WTF twists are too too too much. Get this woman out of publishing ASAP, she is committing crimes of plot.
This was a different read for me. It had this whole haunted house, am I going crazy type of vibe. I didn't enjoy the characters and their interests were very boring to me. It really made the story drag on. I didn't understand it but I had to stick it out to figure out what was going on. Once that happened it left me really confused so I don't really know how to feel about it. Okay read, but this was just not my cup of tea.

Pregnant New York couple, Ben and Emma, decide to try their hand at country living and go to look at a Victorian mansion upstate in the country. Ben is a Director for Broadway plays and when he sees the home has its own theater, he has to have it! Emma has mixed feelings, but eventually thinks it’s exactly what they need. Emma stays at the house to oversee renovations and Ben stays in the city to continue working. Emma starts seeing and experiencing things that make her think she is losing her mind and that maybe she is at risk.
This book. I have no idea how I feel about it, or what it was really about! The twists were jaw dropping! I had to reread the last chapter multiple times. Then sit with the book for so long after, trying to figure out what I had just read. I would recommend for thriller/mystery lovers.
This book had me guessing the whole time and I love when a book does that to me. I loved the atmospheric haunted mansion vibe. Loved the premise and the big twist that leaves you thinking .
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. All of the opinions given are my own and have been given nothing for my review.
A young affluent couple, in love and pregnant, move to the country when they buy an old dilapidated mansion with a bad reputation, but a one of a kind theater in the house they can’t resist. But of course all is not what it seems, and in usual Darcy Bell style it’s revealed in a chilling way.
I really enjoyed this one!
A young couple moves to a completely isolated desolate building that has sat vacant a long time and has lots of ghost rumors swirling around.
Their marriage slowly crumbles as more and more craziness happens.
This book kept me guessing until the very end.
I love Darcey Bell. This book is no exception it’s all of the complexities of relationships. I really really enjoyed it. I could identify with both characters and I couldn’t wait to see the conclusion.
If you are a fan of Bell’s previous work, you’ll most definitely be a fan of this one! In her signature style, I found it to be quite engrossing! Sort or thriller chiller mixup, which I loved this Halloween season! Kept me on the edge of my seat throughout and I finished on first attempt, since it was impossible to put down! Lots of chills, thrills, twisty turns, and gasp worthy shocks! Expect a hangover, perfect for both fans of the authors work or those new to her! Highly, highly recommend!
