I love this book and look forward to reading more by this author, especially when these same detectives appear in other storylines. I love the sharp writing, the dialogue between characters, the determination by Annalese to track down not one but possibly two cases that could be connected.

The book starts off with Detective Vega dealing with the fall-out from the events that end the first book in the series -- discovering that her brother, Alex, murdered their next-door neighbor twenty years ago and their police officer father helped cover it up by staging the scene to look like she was a victim of a serial killer, with Detective Vega turning in her brother and father. Her father has Parkinson's and pleads guilty to the coverup and is sentenced to house arrest, but her brother is in prison awaiting sentencing. Needless to say, it makes for awkward family dinners, especially as Detective Vega's best friend, Sassy, was married to Alex, but had to divorce him for financial and legal reasons. Things become more difficult when Detective Vega learns that Sassy has started seeing someone, and that person, Moe Bocks Jr., was a suspect in a murder years ago, and the officer who was in charge of that case, Leo Hammond, has been murdered.

Leo Hammond was part of the Fantastic Four, four officers who made some of the biggest gang-related busts in Chicago history. He was murdered in his home, and his second wife, who was hiding in the bathroom, tells Detectives Vega and Carelli that the killer was wearing a diving suit and mask. This is incredibly puzzling. Two other members of the Fantastic Four, Frankie and Paul, show up at the scene demanding answers and wanting to take charge. When asked if there was anyone specifically who might have wanted to harm Leo, Paul mentions that Leo had a run-in recently with Moe Bocks Jr., whom he suspected of killing Josie Blanchard, Moe's former girlfriend.

As Detective Vega investigates the murder of Leo Hammond, she begins to suspect that Leo and his partners may not have always stayed on the right side of the legal line, and that they have some significant secrets, which they will work hard to protect. She also looks into the murder of Josie Blanchard, which will cause a lot of problems for her, as Moe Bocks find her actions toward him harassing and gets his lawyer involved, causing Detective's Vega to instruct Vega to leave Moe alone and leave the cold case of Josie Blanchard alone, instructions Vega will not follow.

The book has plenty of action and intrigue, with lots of twists and turns. The cases will be solved, but the murderers are probably not the persons the reader will suspect.

I received a copy of the e-book via NetGalley in exchange for a review.

Oh, another Annalisa Vega book! I devoured Joanna Schaffhausen's backlist in the past few months and was super excited to see she has another one--with Annalisa--coming out later this year. Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC.

Annalisa Vega is a great protagonist. Sure, like pretty much every other female cop in fiction (and in real life, too, I'm sure) she's a total badass, doesn't really care about fashion, and eats whatever she can find when she's hungry. Annalisa has a tightknit family: three bothers, mom and dad, sisters-in-law, niblings and many friends and neighbors that are like family. At least, that's how her life used to be before she turned in her father and brother for murder. Her family is virtually estranged and none of her fellow officers trust her (well, except her ex-husband). When a detective is found murdered, she is called in and figures she's got nothing to lose as she investigates. She quickly finds someone who had a good motive for murdering the detective--someone who seemed to get away with murder before. As Annalisa tries to find the detective's murderer, she's also combing through the details of the cold case that no one wants solved.

What I love about Annalisa is that she does what's right even though it's hard. She has everyone against her, but she fights for the truth no matter what it will cost her. In Long Gone, she's fighting other police officers to find the detective's murder, she's fighting her boss about staying on course and not getting distracted by the cold case, and she's fighting her family. It's a thrilling ride.

Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for an e-arc of Joanna Schaffhausen's next novel.

All I can really say is, she's done it again. What an awesome read!!! I just hate I'm going to have to wait for the next book she writes.

This book is number 2 in the Detective Vega series and it didn't disappoint. I love the back and forth between Vega and Carelli.

It's a page turner, If you like mysteries and/or detective stories, you'll love this book.

The second in Schaffhausen's Annalisa Vega series.

From description: Chicago detective Annalisa Vega shattered her life, personally and professionally, when she turned in her ex-cop father for his role in a murder. Her family can’t forgive her. Her fellow officers no longer trust her. So when detective Leo Hammond turns up dead in a bizarre murder, Annalisa thinks she has nothing to lose by investigating whatever secrets he hid behind the thin blue line.

The first book in this series was OK, but I didn't love it. I liked this one better, but still not completely satisfied with it. I like the Ellery Hathaway/Reed Markham series better.

Read in March. Review scheduled for July 25.

Suspense. Aug. 9, 2022. Print length: 304 pages.

LONG GONE (DETECTIVE ANNALISA VEGA, #2)
BY: JOANNA SCHAFFHAUSEN

This is my all time favorite series in detective crime procedural's written today. I remember when I discovered this new to me Author, Joanna Schaffhausen, I had been saying to myself what a great series this would make. It wasn't until I went to write my review that I was ecstatic to notice that it was the beginning of a great new series. The first one was called, "Gone For Good," and I will include a link to my review at the bottom of this one. It seems like I enjoyed the first book more than most other's after just visiting that page. I gave the first in the series five stars and some other reviewer's whose opinions I value gave it four stars. Still good--four stars as a rating, but not as enthusiastic as I was. I was waiting what seemed like forever for this follow up #2 to be available. I kept checking and I discovered that she had a different series with a totally different detective that I read and also thought it was excellent. That led me to read every single one of the former ones which had been running much longer, which I purchased them all on Amazon to do so. That I have now read all seven of Joanna Schaffhausen's books is a testament to how great of an Author that I think that she is. She writes such compelling police procedural's with a pitch perfect and pulse pounding suspense making her my personal favorite of all of the series that I have tried.

Joanna Schaffhausen holds a doctorate in psychology which previously she worked as a Scientific editor in the field of drug development. Prior to that she was an editorial producer working for ABC news on such shows as World News Tonight, Good Morning America and 20/20. She has an acute understanding in what makes up the brain and in which ways it can go wrong.

This is driving me bonkers how I already wrote my entire review for this and lost most of it after I pressed the send button. Now, I will be just leaving you with the links to my previous reviews as my computer is acting haywire. I highly recommend both series by this author. Here is the link to my review for the first book in this series called, "Gone For Good". https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
For my review of the Ellery Hathaway series called, "Last Seen Alive". https://www.goodreads.com/review/edit...
Enjoy!

Thank you to Net Galley, Joanna Schaffhausen and St. Martin's Press-Minotaur Books for generously providing me with my Arc in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

I just love this author. This was such a good book filled with suspense. I enjoyed trying to figure out who was doing the killings. A little bit of romance was good too! She is on my favorite author list..

Annalisa Vega is a detective in Chicago, and her partner Nick is her ex-husband. She is somewhat of a pariah at work for exposing crime within the force at the end of the first book in this series. In this novel, Annalisa and Nick are investigating the murder of a fellow cop, Hammond. Hammond’s wife suspiciously claims he was shot by an intruder in a scuba diving suit. As they investigate they find out plenty of people had reason to want to kill Hammond, but the top suspect is dating Annalisa’s sister-in-law, and may have gotten away with the murder of a college girl in the past. Annalisa must deal with the fallout in her personal life, solve the murder of Hammond and solve the murder of the college girl to protect her sister-in-law. I am probably making this sound very complicated, but it’s all very clear and easy to follow in the novel. This is an interesting police procedural with a lot going on, and Annalisa is a realistic, multi-faceted character you can root for.

Long Gone by Jonna Schaffhausen is the second book of the Annalise Vega series. This is fast becoming one of my favorite series. I loved this book and really like the characters that Schaffhausen has created. I like that with each book we get to know the characters a little better. This was a good mystery that had me guessing till the end.. Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for my arc in exchange for my honest opinion.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "Long Gone" by Joanna Schaffhausen. Having read the previous book, "Gone For Good", I was eager to get into this one and see if it is as good as the first - and it sure was!

In "Gone For Good" we were introduced to Annalisa Vega, a cop who will let nothing (even family) stand in the way of justice.

Detective Annalisa Vega and her partner (and ex-husband) Nic Carrelli are called out in the middle of the night to the scene of a homicide - by their captain - and are immediately plunged into a complex and convoluted murder mystery, one with it's roots in the past. And the victim's wife swears that it was a frogman who murdered her husband. This one hits close to home, as it's one of their own.

Of course, having made a name for herself in her previous case (and not totally in a good way), there are many who want to undermine Vega's investigation, not only for that reason but also for what they fear she'll find.
The wife, of course, is the first suspect; and she may have had her reasons. But then, the bodies start piling up and Vega and Carrelli really must delve into the past to come up with a real suspect in the present. And along the way they find themselves in real peril.

As with the Ellery (Ellie) Hathaway series , Ms. Schaffhausen has created a character that mystery and police procedural lovers can understand and root for.

This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, St. Martin’s Press and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

I look forward to reading a thriller that keeps me guessing. Joanna Schaffhausen has a unique talent for reveling delays a precise moment that should be revealed.

If you like this genre/style, Long Gone is a great example. Bonus points for fresh sounding (reading?) dialogue, and for the addition of a couple of mini-mysteries to keep the main story from getting stale.

Is this review very nearly identical to my review for the first in the series? Yes, and that isn't a bad thing.

Good book!! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, intrigue, action, bad cops and good cops, even had romance! And a bit of a who done it! I will definitely recommend reading this book! As it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

Another great mystery by Shaffhausen, who never disappoints by providing a solid mystery with loads of suspense. It seems like there's always another thriller with an unreliable narrator, and I love that Schaffhausen's books deliver the thrills without that particular gimmick.

Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martins Press for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review.

Detective Annalise Vega is called to a murder scene where a cop has been killed in his own home. Vega has credibility issues with other cops after putting members of her own family away for a murder that happened years before. As she investigates the murder of the cop, she finds herself investigating old crimes that may be related.

This was a really good police procedural with a lot going on. There were many threads to follow and all were entertaining. Everything was resolved well. Annalisa is an interesting character and I look forward to her next case.

This is the second book in this series. I really enjoyed the story line and the characters. The book did have a lot of characters so I would suggest reading this series in order. Will definitely be watching for the next book in this series

Annalisa Vega is back with a vengeance for a new case that she’s too involved in. This time she’s investigating another cop’s death along with her partner, and ex-husband, Nick Carelli. The case has a lot of twists and Annalisa’s life is in danger. Add that to her stress over recently turning in her father and brother for murder, and Annalisa isn’t having the best time. But she’s determined to solve the crime, even if it means she has to bend a few rules. Schaffhausen does a great job of bringing readers back into Annalisa’s life, and she adds in several other character perspectives so that readers get a full picture of the story. Schaffhausen leaves small breadcrumbs for readers that seem unimportant until they’re used to solve the case in the end. The story did start out a bit slow with the introduction the plot and lots of new characters, but once the story picks up, the momentum is carried through the end. This is a must read for mystery lovers.

I enjoyed the second book in this series and am looking forward to the next one. It felt like there were a lot of moving parts and characters to keep track of but it was a fun ride.

I received this ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Another great book by Schaffhausen full of action, suspense and a little romance! I couldn’t put it down and now I can only hope that there will be a next book in the series. We were introduced to Detective Annalisa Vega in Gone for Good in which she solved two crimes and one of them by her brother, Alex, and covered up by her father, an ex-cop. Long Gone continues with Annalisa not being trusted by her fellow officers and her family that can’t forgive her because of what happened to her brother and father. So, when she is asked to investigate the murder of a local cop, Leo Hammond, she will do her job no matter what she finds out. As she investigates Hammond, she starts to believe that he might be a dirty cop and gets entangled with a cold case which involves a suspect that could have murdered Hammond, Moe Bocks, Not only is he a suspect in the Hammond case and the cold case but he is also dating Annalisa's sister-in-law. Her sister-in-law doesn’t want to listen to Annalisa about not dating Bock, so Annalisa tries to connect him to the cold case. What happens is someone beats up on Bocks and Annalisa gets blamed for his beating. She needs to prove her innocence, solve the Hammond Case plus the cold case murder of a young college girl. Can she solve her cases without being arrested or killed by the actual killer.
