Another great book!! I am seriously loving this series. The characters are incredible and the storyline sucks you from the very beginning. Be warned....once you start, you won't stop!

Annalisa takes on more evil and murders. The twists are endless and end results are mind blowing!

I love reading Annalisas personal side of the story as well. Between the struggles with her family and the whole Colin & Nick situation, this woman deserves some good in her life.

I cannot wait to see where the road takes Annalisa next! Get this book and get ready for a twisty ride.

*I highly recommend starting with Gone for Good!!

✔️ the second book in the series continues to explore Annalisa’s complex family relationships- I would highly recommend reading the first book in the series before this one
✔️although it felt a bit slow for me at the beginning, a well written story with one current and one cold murder case, that may or may not be connected.

“Sometimes no one went to jail. There was no trial or chance to lay out all the evidence. No explanation, no accountability. Sometimes the end was all you got.”

Annalisa Vega shattered her own life when she turned in her ex cop father for murder. Her fellow cops no longer trust her, so when detective Leo Hammomd turns up dead, she has nothing to lose by investigating the secrets Leo held behind the thin blue line.

“A crooked cop messed up even the straight cases.”

I read. A lot. Some books stay with you, others not so much. I read Gone For Good, book one in this series, in August of 2021. And when I started this one I was immediately back in Annalisa’s world. That right there has to tell you something about this story in particular. I did enjoy that one a bit more, but this one had an ok mystery, some police procedural drama, and quite a bit of family drama. The murder mystery just didn’t quite grab me like it did in book one unfortunately.

I was also gifted the audiobook but there was something so distracting about the narration. I can’t quite put my finger on it…but it is almost like listening to a television reporter-with that tone that they use, you know the one-reading this whole book just like they would report on a story. Every single sentence is ended in the exact. Same. Tone. Awful, and very distracting.

Thank you to Netgalley, St Martin’s Press, Dreamscape Media, and the author for the ALC and ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Talk about secrets and lies!
Intriguing crime mystery with so much going on. I had a hard time keeping all the characters and facts straight in my head.
Detective Annalisa Vega gets herself in the middle of a 20 year old cold murder case. As she works with her detective ex husband things get pretty intense. Thank goodness he has her back as everyone else is ready to give up on her. She also has a tendency to go rouge which I found frustrating.
I highly recommend reading the first book in the series. There is so much backstory in the first book that is important to know about. Can this be read as a standalone read? Yes, it can. But, knowing what happened in the first book really plays a big part in Long Gone.
Overall, great series!!!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Another great installment in this police procedural series. Annalisa and her partner Nick take on two high profile cases that put them in constant danger. It consists of incredibly interesting characters. The plot is intense and takes many twists and turns. The author does a wonderful job of capturing and holding the attention of the reader from beginning to end. There are emotional highs and lows as the cases take their own roads.

I didn't realize was second book
Went in not really knowing the characters.
Good fast paced crime thriller. Might of enjoyed it more if I had read the first book but overall was a solid read.

Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.

I received a digital advance copy of Long Gone by Joanna Schaffhausen via NetGalley. Long Gone is scheduled for release on August 9, 2022.

Long Gone is the second book in a series following Detective Annalisa Vega. Annalisa previously (I assume in book 1, which I have not read) turned in her father and brother for their roles in a murder many years ago. Annalisa finds herself untrusted by both her family and other officers. When a detective in another precinct turns up dead in a bizarre murder, Annalisa finds herself investigating secrets hiding in the lives of officers and their families. Her number one suspect is a man accused of murder in the past, so Annalisa finds herself investigating both a present-day murder and a cold case.

While I have not read the first book in the series, I had no difficulty getting into this story and following the plot line. Schaffhausen gives the reader enough information about past events to ground you in the story even if you missed the first episode. She also builds on the past in a way that moves Annalisa’s personal life story forward at the same time she is investigating the murders. Having Annalisa dealing with both a current and a past murder at the same time did create some challenges for me as a reader. With two murders in two times, the cast of characters was fairly large, which made it difficult to keep track of who did what. Particularly in the last quarter of the novel, I found that I became unclear on who did what, as events in two timelines resolved.

Annalisa is a fully developed character who is dealing with issues in her romantic, family, and professional lives all at once. Seeing her in all of these roles makes her feel real, as real people don’t get the benefit of dealing with one aspect of their lives at a time. Characters around her were not always as fully developed, as we just didn’t see as much of their lives, but none of them felt flat or as if they were there solely for the sake of the plot.

Overall, Long Gone is well written mystery/suspense novel that features law enforcement characters who are presented in shades of gray, rather than suggesting they are either good or evil.

Schaffhausen is a successful American author who holds a doctorate in Psychology. This new release is the second in the 'Detective Annalisa Vega' series. These are police procedural mysteries and should be read in order to really enjoy them. In this one Annalisa goes up against a man whom she thinks got away with the murder of his girlfriend years ago, as she thinks he is also good for the recent murder of a police officer. As she digs into both case she takes risks and puts herself in danger, as she discovers secrets that others are willing to kill for. This series is a great recommendation for fans of Karin Slaughter (Will Trent Series) or other even such classics as Sue Grafton. I really enjoyed it.

I read the first book in this series despite knowing I may not love it because I am decidedly not a huge detective/ crime thriller fan and find the investigative part to be a bit dull and I usually find myself turning out if its an audiobook. Luckily I read the first book in the series as a physical book so I was able to keep focus but still found the investigation a bit dull. The sequel was really no different. There were again a lot of characters to keep track of which usually frustrates me but this wasn't too bad and I was able to keep them straight pretty quickly. I did think the twists were unexpected but didn't find myself fully invested to feel completely shocked. I did enjoy the ending though and the relationship between the two was fun to watch. I think I will probably continue to avoid the genre but do enjoy this authors writing. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this second installment of the Annalisa Vega series. Although the mystery in this one stands alone, you'll miss a lot of the emotional impact and side storylines if you don't read Gone for Good first.

In this one, Vega and her ex-husband/partner Nick are called in to help investigate the murder of a fellow police officer, Leo Hammond. Leo was a part of a group of officers known as "The Fantastic Four", cops who got arrests and got the job done. Annalisa starts to investigate and discovers another unsolved case with a suspect who has good reason to want Leo dead--and that man happens to be dating Vega's ex-sister-in-law. As the pieces start to come together, there are more murders, more attacks, and Vega's life might be the one in the crosshairs.

Overall this is a very solid offering from Schaffhausen in this new series. The characters are fully fleshed out and have complex personalities and motivations. I really like Annalisa, and being able to root for her is what makes this series shine. She's tough, smart, and not afraid to do the right thing regardless of personal consequences. I'm a huge fan of police procedurals and this one is a fabulous example. My only problem is when characters I like are set up over and over and framed for things they don't do and everyone around them seems to believe the setup. As I said in an update, the wrongfully accused person is one of my least favorite tropes, so those parts in this book gave me anxiety and made me like the book a bit less. It's still a fabulous read and highly recommended.

I listened to this as an audiobook and the narrator Kelsey Navarro does a stellar job giving voice to Annalisa. The entire book is from her point of view, so getting her personality and intonation is critical and Navarro does it well, as she did in Gone for Good.

If you're a fan of police procedural mysteries, do yourself a favor and read this series, you won't be disappointed!

Long Gone is a very well written and plotted police procedural that has twists and turns and more than enough action that you wont want to put this book down.

Anna and Nick are on the case of a brutal murder of one of their own.

Leo is a well known seasoned detective that belongs to a group of four who are not happy that Anna and Nick are on the case and they make it well known.

The bodies are piling up and the tension increases.

This is book two in the series and I liked it even better than the first one; probably because I know and like the characters.

Anna had my holding my breath a few times.

I cant wait for the next adventure in the series. I will be first in line to get my copy.

Thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for a page turning read.

A twisty complex procedural about murder, family, and corruption. Det. Annalisa Vega is regarded with derision by many of her colleagues because she turned in her father, a cop, for covering up a murder by her brother Alex. Now, though, partnered with her ex-husband Nick she's working a case where a cop was murdered and it's leading her down unexpected alleys. Does the murder of Leo connect to the murder of Sandy all those years ago? Or is it connected to the unsolved murder of Josie? Anna has a reason to get answers because the prime suspect in Josie's case is Moe Bocks, who is dating Sassy, Alex's wife and her former BFF. There's something odd about the most recent murder- the villain was wearing a wet suit. And then there's another murder and another wet suit sighting. Anna finds herself crossing lines and then in danger. No spoilers but know that this one has enough tentacles to keep you guessing. Annalisa is a terrific character- a woman who stands up for what she believes is right and wants to do right by her family and victims of crime. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. Great read that, while it's the second in a series, will be fine as a standalone.

If you enjoy police procedurals and a well written mystery you should check out the Detective Annalisa Vega novels. Long Gone is the second book in this series by Joanna Schaffhausen, and while it can be read without having read the first one, Gone for Good, there is so much family drama from the first one that carries over to the second that I think this is a series that is best read in order.

But, if you just can’t wait, then you’re in for a treat with well developed characters that have real flaws but continue to prove themselves worthy of their family and of their police family… even if both families feel they’ve been wronged.

There are two mysteries intertwined in Long Gone that keeps the suspense high and the action fast paced. We also get more of Annalisa and her partner/ex-husband’s complicated relationship. When I was explaining the plot of the first book to my husband it felt like a soap opera with so many fraught relationships, and so while I was reading this one, I realized that this one too had that feel.

Another great read in the series, and I’m looking forward to the next one.

Long Gone is the second in a series featuring Detective Annalisa Vega. While it is book 2, it can definitely be read as a stand alone. Vega is a by the book Detective, going so far as to turn her own dad and brother in for murder. In this second installment, Vega teams up with her ex, Nick as they investigate the murder of a cop that’s one of a group of four old time cops nicknamed The Fantastic Four. What Vega digs up is not only a suspect for Leo’s death, but also the prime suspect of a murder twenty years ago. When Vega gets too close ranks are closed against her and she’s taken off the case, but that’s not about to stop Vega, she knows she’s onto something, but are the two cases connected and are the Fantastic Four really as fantastic as everyone thinks? As more bodies pile up, Vega might be in mortal danger, but she’ll stop at nothing to solve her case.

The second book in the Annalisa Vega series, this didn't *quite* live up to the first, but it was still fast and exciting with plenty of twists. Thanks to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the early copy!
*
In this book, Annalisa is investigating the murder of a cop, which brings up an unsolved murder from 20 years earlier - she's convinced the guy who got away with that is responsible for this murder as well. But as she's investigating, it becomes obvious the cop has a lot of skeletons in his closet.
*
It was interesting the way the two investigations were interwoven, even when you want to shake Annalisa for going so directly against orders and putting herself in harm's way (although that seems to be a theme of every detective story.)
*
I was a bit confused at first because it's not obvious that the prologue is a flashback, so it took a bit to figure out how that related to the main story. There was also a lot of exposition that seemed almost lazy in explaining some plot points.
*
But there were some fun twists that took me by surprise. And I still really like Annalisa as a character. This does a lot to explain what happened in the previous book, but I would still recommend reading it first--I think without the context it may end up confusing.

Chicago Detective Annalisa Vega is doing her best to be a cop who does right, even turning her own cop father and her brother for crimes they committed years ago. Except for her partner, Nick Corelli, who is also her ex-husband, most other cops want nothing to do with her. When a seasoned cop veteran is found dead, and then a second one is found dead, Annalisa is determined to solve what is going on. Even going against the orders of her boss. and even after being attacked and framed for another murder, Annalisa won't stop until she finds the truth and those responsible.

The second in the Detective Vega series! You definitely could read this as a stand alone but I would recommend reading the first one because it makes the story more enjoyable imo. It was also interesting to see how the characters developed from the last book to this one.

I liked the storyline and how there was actually multiple mysteries to solve rather than just one. I love the relationship between Annalisa and Nick, and would love to read more about them.

Long Gone is the second book in a series about detective Annalisa Vega, though it easily stands alone.

Annalisa Vega is known as the detective who turned in her own father (an ex-cop) for his role in a murder. While she knows she did the right thing, her personal and professional lives fell apart as a result. Held at bay by fellow detectives, cops, and her own family, she feels she has nothing to lose in doing whatever it takes to solve her latest case, the murder of detective Leo Hammond. Even if it means going behind/against the blue line again.

Her investigation into Hammond's murder leads her to another murder case - one that has been unsolved for twenty years. Working the two cases simultaneously, she finds she is also working against the clock. There are two murderers out there, and they are willing to do anything to stop Vega from bringing the truth to light.

As with her Ellery Hathaway series, Schaffhausen shows her skills at complex and believable characters and intricately planned plots. This is a very enjoyable read, and I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series!

My thanks to Minotaur Books who allowed me to read an e-ARC via NetGalley. The book is scheduled for publication on August 9, 2022. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and are freely given.

Anything she had to lose is long gone...

Annalisa feels like an outsider after turning in her father, a retired cop, for being complicit in a murder. She no longer feels welcome around her family, and her fellow officers whisper about her at work. When Annalisa and her partner are called to the scene of detective Leo Hammond's murder, all of the evidence leads to more questions than answers. Determined to solve the case, Annalisa begins to investigate Leo's secrets and past cases to find out who might have a grudge against him. As a detective with a prolific career behind him, the list of Leo's potential enemies is a long one, but one of them sticks out from the rest. Moe Bocks, a used car salesman, was on Leo's radar for years as a suspect in a young woman's murder, but he was never able to prove it. Now Moe is dating Annalisa's best friend, putting even more pressure on her to solve the case and put him away for murder. With no one on her side, can Annalisa solve the case? Or will she be the next officer to fall?
I flew through this book almost as quickly as the first Annalisa Vega novel! I was so excited to catch up with Annalisa and her sharp detective work. Annalisa is brilliant and picks up on the slightest details that many people would miss. I enjoyed the accompanying audiobook and was thrilled that Kelsey Navarro was the narrator, as I loved her performance in the audiobook for the first novel. I could listen to her all day long! I enjoyed Long Gone as much as Gone for Good, and I can't wait for the third installment of this series. I recommend this book to anyone who has read and loved Gone for Good!
