Between incapacitating drug addiction and total abstinence is a community of IV drug users who are unable or unwilling to quit drugs but want to avert furthur harm to themselves and others. These are people who have managed to create a network advocating the wide use of Narcan, needle and syringe exchanges, and Suboxone.. The personal stories are riveting. The determination of some of the central characters to motivate themselves and each other to do better within their addictions did seem to keep them addicted.
This is also the story of the beginning of widespread harm reduction services for drug users in tandem with the ongoing War On Drugs and the influx of OxyContin to Appalachia which spurned the opioid epidemic in the US. The thought is that harm reduction services do not increase addiction, but save lives. Unfortunately, these pioneers have understandably run into myriad legal issues and misunderstandings in trying to implement change.
