This is a cute little book that kids will definitely get a kick out of. I really love the bright illustrations with crisp lines, too.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
I love Elise Gravel - her books are always so fun to read out loud in the classroom! Although this one will be a board book it will still be a great one for the classroom. A little monster demands all the things they want but their parent says no. The monster is sad because they are always told 'no'. A great start for a conversation about what is reasonable to ask and what others can give you.
Very young readers will enjoy the repetition and predictable pattern of the prose in this book. Those same things will also make it a great first independent read to help build confidence. Lulu's outlandish requests will make students giggle, and the way it comes together at the end is quite clever and sweet.
The illustrations are simple, bold, and bright which will capture the attention of young readers. This would be a great addition to a pre-K classroom bookshelf and would make a fun circle time read.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
This super cute book would be perfect for a toddler. It includes repeating phrases that toddlers or young children can repeat throughout the book. This is the kind of book where it is easy to involve children in actions that match the book, which makes this an engaging read for young ones.
I’m the Boss is a board book about an adorable little monster who wants to be the boss. The monster tells the grown up montages about everything it wants. The little monster asks for things like cake, dinosaur with a real baby inside, an elephant, a plane, etc. The response from the grown up monster is always no. This continues until the little monster gets mad and bemoans how it’s just not fair. The monster then becomes sad and asks for a hug which the grown up monster happily agrees to. This is a cute book that has lots of repetition and is silly. Toddlers and preschoolers should find the demands pretty funny.
Perfect for parents and kids who are in that stage of I WANT I WANT I WANT! We may not always be able to procure a chocolate pony, but we can give a big hug. RIGHT NOW.
I just love this cute little book by Elise Gravel. Her books are always so funny and the accompanying illustrations are bright and whimsical. She also does a great job of matching her content to her reader. This book has plenty of repetition for younger readers, and its subject matter is one to which ALL readers will be able to relate. I will definitely recommend this book and purchase it for my library.
Very quick little baby book about not getting everything you want. It’s not my fave Elise Gravel book.
I think this book went on for a little too long. The joke got old fast and the ridiculous requests were not increasing in hilarity to keep attention. Also what a sad way to send this message.
I'M THE BOSS by Elise Gravel is a story about not getting what we want, but getting what we need with minimalist design and brevity.
I appreciate the theme since toddlers very much want so many things and I like the simple, clean design. Including elephants, trucks, dinosaurs, and robots is a bonus because my kids love them.
I do think that the book would benefit from some changes. As anyone with toddlers/kids knows, they do not respond well to the word "no". No one really benefits from just the word "no". Everyone (toddlers, kids, teens, adults) wants to know the 'why' behind the "no". It seems like this book wants to teach kids how to deal with not getting what they want and I believe it falls short. I think this book would benefit from adding to the 'no' section after each portion.
For example - "I want a cake with lots of candy on top!" then "No, Lulu, I can't give you cake with candy on top. It will make your tummy hurt!" or whatever reason you want to add.
All in all, I'M THE BOSS is a simple and cute story, but I think it has the potential to shine.
This is such a cute book for toddlers with easy to understand language, vivid colors, and engaging illustrations! It can be hard for kids to understand why they can't have something they really want, so including outrageous examples was such a good idea. And everyone loves hugs! Thank you NetGalley for providing a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
