This book was alright. It kept me interested probably because it was a novella. I don't think this is my favorite genre but it kept me turning the pages.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book! I was intrigued by the cover and then with the story! I loved the mystery mixed with a romance thriller!
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. A good mystery thriller drama. Love the cover.
This story was a paranormal romance. It centers around a town, Ancient Oaks. Fiona was a witch. What she didn't tell anyone is that her magical powers have been fading. Carter Balan comes to Ancient Oaks in search of what happened to his grandfather 30 years ago. Fiona remembers that Carter was the first boy she ever kissed but he doesn't remember.
This was a relatively short book that took place over a short period of time. I didn't feel that there was enough time to learn more about the characters. Everything happened so fast. We didn't get much information so it was difficult to really care about them.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC for an exchange of an honest review.
Excellent book, I really enjoyed it.
2.5 stars- I thought this novella was mostly decent. There were some cheesy romance terms used that were eye rolling (“claimed”, “branded”). There was also a point where it says the main character doesn’t like the “out of doors”- you mean the outdoors? There were times the author used outdated terms like “rear” in place of butt, which seemed at odds with the sex scene between characters who had only met once before.
The book cover was possibly the worst thing about the book. Not only is it cheesy looking, it doesn’t make sense. Carter is supposed to look like a military man with shorter hair, but the cover shows him with shaggy hair. Also, Fiona is dressed in a suit with sunglasses like she works for the CIA instead of at a bookstore. Seriously….who approved this book cover?
The ending was just weird. I understand in novellas everything kind of has the be condensed down, but that just came out of nowhere.
Oh….also, if a vampire bite can be cured, why did Carter’s grandfather kill himself after being bitten? The vampire was close enough to death to finish it and get the cure. That made absolutely no sense to me.
This was a fun read, and had potential, but ended up being just okay.
Thank you to NetGalley and The Wild Rose Press for providing me access to this eARC for my honest opinion!
A fun quick read with characters that I found very likable and interesting. Good story plot. Would love to see more of this. Thanks #netgalley and #TheWildRosePressInc for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Wild Rose Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. Is this the start of a series? I found this book to be a bit confusing. I guess if you believe in instalove or repressed love then maybe this would make sense. So many secrets and sort of random. I liked Fiona and Carter. I actually felt bad for Fiona that she did not believe in herself. 3 stars
A brilliantly executed cozy mystery. As Above, So Below was a delightful read which kept me guessing until the very end.
Synopsis:
A search for information about his grandfather's mysterious death leads Army physician, Carter Balan, to the town of Ancient Oaks.
Fiona Moon has a secret. Her magical abilities have been fading since her 40th birthday and with Halloween only a week away, the witch fears that her powers are gone for good.
A very quick, fantasy read. Ancient Oaks is a town not on any map, but Carter Balan manages to find it while searching for information about his grandfather's death. There he meets Fiona Moon, the owner of a bookstore in Ancient Oaks. When she sees Carter, she realizes she remembers him as he was the first boy she ever kissed. Carter doesn't seem to remember Fiona though. The adventure begins.
Ancient Oaks is a town inhabited only by magical beings - witches, warlocks, fairies, werewolves, etc. The book is filled with magic - and there's a vampire too! Filled with magic and mystery and a murder, it's a fun town to visit (even though mortals aren't able to enter). What happened to Carter's grandfather? Who or what killed one of the town's residents? Is Fiona losing her magic? The book takes place over a short period of time with an epilogue one-week later. There's not enough time in this short book for a great deal of character development, and I felt it would have been much nicer to know more about the backgrounds of all the characters - but maybe there will be a follow-up book?
Thanks to The Wild Rose Press, Inc. through Netgalley for an advance copy.
I am giving this book 4.6 stars, I simply enjoyed this book. The author brought a bunch of paranormal entities together in one book. You have witches, warlocks, werewolves, vampire hunters, and fairies. The story is about Fiona who is a witch and Carter, who is a doctor and soon to be ex-military. Carter comes to Ancient Oaks in order to find out what happened to his grandfather, and he finds out a neck of a whole lot more while being there including love. I would love to read more in the series, hopefully the author will continue the story of Fiona, Carter, and the people of Ancient Oaks.
I have received this advance readers copy from Netgalley, and am giving an unbiased and fair review
Carter is drawn to a magical town that he should not be able to access. Fiona is a witch with waning power. They are instantly drawn to each other and have a past that is hidden. This paranormal romance is perfect for this time of year. There's plenty of spooky things going on and the hopefulness of a community working together to rid their town of evil.
As above, So Below by Jennifer D. Bokol is an eerie paranormal romance. It centers around a town, Ancient Oaks, which was founded by paranormal beings for only paranormal beings. It is discovered that a vampire is living in the woods outside of town. The townsfolk thought legendary vampire hunter Rupert Balan sacrificed his life in destroying the last vampire but for sure there is a vampire living in a cave in the woods. Rupert Balan's grandson, Carter Balan joins witch Fiona Moon to try to destroy this vampire. I really liked the characters in this book, especially Fiona and Carter. I look forward to more stories by this author.
