A griping, thrilling novel full of deception, lies, betrayal, and half-truths. A fast-paced novel that will keep you on your toes. I enjoyed the many different characters in this novel and how they all have different personalities, and were constantly seeming to try to one-up each other. Are your secrets ever a secret for long?
A great read that I recommend.
The Secret Next Door by Rebecca Taylor was a good read. The characters were well-developed and grew into their roles throughout the book. The plot was not all that original but very relatable, which kept it interesting. The narrator, Libby McKnight, was good and the tome and cadence of her voice was great! All in all, a solid read with a good mystery.
***** I received an ARC from NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for my honest review. *****
If you love semi detached suburbia and gossip then you will love this book. I managed to finish it for the review but not really my genre. Pages of what i consider meaningless drivel and a whole chapter about a trampoline lol. Thank you #NetGalley for the audiobook to review.
Thank you to Sourcebooks for my gifted review copy.
The Secret Next Door has neighbors behaving poorly and the premise of of not everything looking it first seemed when you pull back the curtains -which also happens to be one of my favorite sub-genres of suspense fiction!
The audiobook was read by Libby McKnight and the narration was great and the pacing was spot on. McKnight made this engaging story come alive and I enjoyed reading this book via audio so much.
This was the perfect mix of being a page turner while also have issues many of us can relate to in our own daily lives. Adult friendships, marriage and motherhood are all topics incorporated into this engaging plot line and I can't wait to read what author Rebecca Taylor writes next!
Neighborhood mystery-dramas feel like a relatively recent sub-genre that has become popular and it's one that I just can't resist! Alyson, recently moved to the neighborhood in an affluent Denver suburb, finds herself in many ways living the life that she's always dreamed of having. But it's not long before it's clear that things aren't going quite as well as she hoped - in her relationships with the wealthier women of the neighborhood, or her marriage or even her five-year old son's transition to kindergarten. Meanwhile, in the same neighborhood, Bonnie, feels on top of it all - soon to expand her life to a state senate seat. But a terrible tragedy impacts her - and their whole neighborhood.
I must say, this is a very well-performed and quite addictive listen. The neighborhood gossip especially comes to life. I always found myself eager to keep on listening - even while disagreeing with the way the characters act and the ways they try to solve their problems. I was definitely sucked into the story and the drama of it all. The plot contains some geniune surprises, too! I am definitely looking forward to more from Taylor in the future!
The Secret Next Door tells the tale of Alyson Tinsdale, new to the Enclave neighborhood and desperate to make friends and keep up with the "Jones'". Alyson makes a few social media faux pas, which doesn't do much to ingratiate herself into the community. Meanwhile, Bonnie Sloan, a local politician in the Enclave and social mother hen, seems to have the perfect life to those on the outside of her household. Alyson calls out one of Bonnie's kids on social media, and thus, begins the troubles between the two, As the story unfolds, nothing is as it seems in this neighborhood. Social problems, money problems, mental problems, marriage problems., etc. A kid is found dead, and things go into a further tailspin. There could've been some more depth to some of the characters, and maybe less choppy dialogue. Overall an entertaining book full of gossip.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. The opinions here are all my own.
Oh, this was horrible! All the entitled white upper class middle age women and their made up drama. I hated it.
Alyson, her husband, and their five-year-old son move into a house that they can barely afford in an upscale neighborhood. Alyson is very insecure and desperately wants to be accepted by the other women in the neighborhood. Bonnie, a wealthy woman who lives in the community, to have everything: a son heading to Yale and a promising political career. Bonnie is devastated when her middle son is found dead by the lake one night. Both women try to keep their families safe even as gossip is rampage through the neighborhood. I enjoyed this story. I was intrigued throughout and kept reading. It was well written and entertaining. I was also glad that Taylor showed a marriage that ebbed and flowed. Things are not always great and you can work through the hard stuff. It felt kind of similar to Ask Again, Yes and Little Fires Everywhere. There are so many neighborhood dramas out there and this one ranks high. Makes me questions do I really know my neighbors?
Early buzz drew me to this book. It was the immediate draw from the first page that kept me quickly reading. I wasnโt sure exactly what was going on with several scenarios but none of my suspicions were confirmed, thankfully. I was pleasantly surprised which is what I embrace in a book. Being unpredictable. I loved Alisonโs character from the start and enjoyed her throughout, even when my opinion on other characters changed.
The audiobook is perfectly narrated by the fantastic Libby McKnight.

A book full of secrets and drama that kept me engaged from to start to finish.
There was more drama than thriller in this story however it was very well written and easy to read, I really enjoyed it.
Thank you Recorded Books and NetGalley for this ALC.

Thank you netgalley for providing me with this book. This was definitely a heavy book to read, but the thriller of it was just put on the back burner. I wanted/expected more out of it.
Alyson and her family live in a home well beyond their means. Alyson struggles with her marriage and with her son's behavioral problems, and spends her time trying to fit into the neighbourhood and just will not do the work for it; she was a difficult character for me to get behind. Alyson's neighbours all have different things going on in their lives which are happening behind closed doors.
This book is a neighborhood drama, not the "thriller" as was listed in the book details. Yes, there was a mystery as to who was responsible for a death, but it did not do it for me.
The pacing was pretty good and I did listen to the audiobook.
Thanks NetGalley for the advance audiobook in exchange for an honest review!
Did not finish in time before it was archived.
Looks good though!
This book was definitely well written, but I didn't really get excited by the story line. This was labeled a thriller, but I'm not quite sure I would call it that - it seemed more family drama to me. I did like the outcome when we find out the "whodunit", and the happy ending was nice!
This was a well written and well developed story. Heavy in drama and light in the thriller aspect. I had thought at a few points that the thriller element would pick up but it was often put on the back burner whenever it was brought back.
This is mainly a story about neighborhood dramas and what happens when your family is crumbling. At times i found the characters frustrating and irritating with their behaviors or attitudes. And this is one of those where if people would just communicate, things could be solved sooner. I thought there were going to be bigger secrets also.
This wasnโt my favorite read but it was a good drama story if thatโs what youโre in the mood for.
Alyson and her family live in a home well beyond their means. Alyson struggles with her marriage and with her son's behavioral problems, and spends her time trying to fit in to the neighborhood and being spineless; she was a difficult character for me to get behind. Around Alyson are her neighbors who have secrets of their own, because no one knows what goes on behind closed doors.
This book is a neighborhood drama, not the "thriller" or "twisty tale of surprise and psychological suspense" as was listed in the book details and early reviews. Yes, there was a mystery as to who was responsible for a death, but that was really in the background of the drama between neighbors and within households.
I listened to this book on audio - the narrator was good and it moved along at a nice pace.
I listened to the audio version and loved the narrator. The book itself had several different storylines going so it took me a bit to remember who was who however it came together perfectly!
The first line in the publisherโs description sums this book up perfectlyโฆhow well do you really know your neighbours? I love neighbourhood drama thrillers and this one did not disappoint!
When Alyson moves into a coveted high end neighbourhood with her husband and 5 year old son, she is ecstatic. Sheโs been wanting to provide her son with a safe neighbourhood and terrific school. Her biggest concern is hoping that the women on the block like her and want to be her friend. However, when she makes a pointed yet humiliating post about her neighbour Bonnieโs son on the neighbourhood Facebook page, this sets off an unforeseeable chain of events that lead to devastating consequences.
In the spirit of Lisa See books, The Secret Next Door delves into the fragility of relationships and how one can unknowingly impact the lives of others. It also explores the importance of family bonds versus external pressures. I loved this complicated and emotional character driven story. It ripped my heart out of my chest.
The audiobook performance was solid. The narrator was a perfect match for the MC and kept me engaged.
A gracious thank you to #RBMedia and Netgalley for an advanced audio copy in exchange for an honest review.
Narrator 5 stars
Great voice
Story 4 stars
I found myself wanting to listen to just one more chapter at the end of every chapter and before I knew it, it was over. That's a sign of a really good book.
I would never want to have friends or relationships like this but I loved listening to the drama unfold.
How well do you know your neighbors? Do you really want to? Alyson & Justin (and their 5yo son) move into a new home in an upper class neighborhood. Alyson is desperate to fit in and make friends but at what cost?
This book has so many storylines I wasnโt 100% where it was going. It dragged a little for me because of this but Iโm glad I stuck with it for sure.
Alyson Tinsdale moves to an exclusive neighborhood in Colorado with her husband and son. What will she do and what will she sacrifice to fit in? After settling in, she begins to realize that things are not all they seem with her neighbors. After a child ends up dead, things begin to unravel quickly.
While I did enjoy the fast paced mystery and the narrator was good, I found Alyson Tinsdale to be one of the most annoying characters Iโve ever come across. I tried to find something I liked about her but I just couldnโt.
**huge thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
